In this episode you will discover: Why menopause is such an important time in a woman's life to pay attention to her health careWhy telemedicine is perfect for menopause careWhy millennial demand for personalized reproductive services will continue as they move into their 40-50s and what that means for workplacesKey Takeaways: Menopause is not a disease, it's a natural phase of life and it impacts the quality of life for many women. They need to find resources so that they could find relief sooner. Hormone therapy is a real savior for many women who qualify for it, but the process of understanding the decision to go for it or not involves continuous patient-provider conversations. Alleviating the symptoms of menopause would mean determining a solution that's specific for the individual as not every woman experiences the same symptoms. There must also be lifestyle changes. Menopause is an uncomfortable topic for most people and that's why telehealth is perfect for it. The trend right now regarding menopause is that there's a lot of curiosity around it both from employees and employers. Everyone's trying to educate themselves. We must lean hard into those conversations and make healthcare for menopause more accessible to all. “Women in their forties and fifties are at the pinnacle of their careers. Let's empower them so that they can continue to be the kinds of leaders that organizations need, and at the same time, just make them feel better and improve the way healthcare is supported for women in their post-reproductive years. - Jill Angelo, CEO of GennevResources: Website: https://www.gennev.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillangelo/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jillangelo NY Times Article mentioned in the discussion: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/01/magazine/menopause-hot-flashes-hormone-therapy.html Learn more from Carrie and Rebecca: Healthcare Insights (a monthly deep dive into specific topics for innovators): https://nixongwiltlaw.com/healthcare-insightsTelehealth/Virtual Care Mgmt Update (a biweekly LinkedIn newsletter tracking legal and policy changes across the nation): https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/telehealth-virtual-care-update-6901900767960068096/ Website: https://nixongwiltlaw.com/ Carrie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/carrienixon/ Rebecca on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccagwilt/NGL on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/nixon-gwilt-law/
Jill Angelo is the co-founder and CEO of Gennev, a virtual care platform for menopause in the US. Jill spotted an opportunity six years ago, and although Gennev started out a little different than it has ended up, they were one of the first companies to become a leader in this space. And over the pandemic Gennev pivoted to providing education and telemedicine for menopause relief to thousands of women via one-on-one and group visits through a team of ob/gyns and registered dietitians. And they must have done something right: because, the company was recently acquired by Unified Health Care Group – one of the first acquisitions in the new fast-growing menopause space.Highlights:• What happened when she noticed people leaving the workforce• What women in the workplace who are going through menopause need from their employers • The gifts menopause brings us • How her perimenopause is going at 48• How Gennev started selling a lubricant and morphed into telehealth and HRT during the pandemic• How menopause treatment is unique to each person • What changes she's seen in the menopause conversation • Her take on the safety of HRT right now • The menopause research she's most excited about • What annoys her about celebrities and menopause • Why she wants every woman to get an M-check starting at 45 • How she got over her nerves talking about menopause Where to find Gennev: Web: Gennev.comInstagram: @mygennevTwitter: @mygennevSPONSORS: Become anti-flush cooling clothing | Now shipping to the US! | Use code HOTFLASHINC to get a 20 percent discount Join the Hotflash Inc perimenoposse: Web: hotflashinc.comTikTok: @hotflashincInstagram: @hotflashincTwitter: @hotflashinc Episode website: Hotflashinc See hotflashinc.com/privacy-policy for privacy information
In this episode of The Connected Care Team, Jill Angelo, founder and CEO of Gennev, discusses the importance of education around menopause, integrated care models, and virtual care opportunities. Jill explains how technology provides value when addressing the gaps in resources and support for menopausal women. Gennev's mission Menopause is a hormonal shift every woman goes through, starting in her forties. Although it is a condition that affects all women, there is little education and support available. Jill Angelo created Gennev to address this gap in women's healthcare. The clinic's mission is to improve the standard of care for women experiencing menopause by increasing access to support and quality care. “We surveyed 1,500 women to really understand where did you go for your menopause education? You know, how'd you learn about it? And the overriding insight in that research was ‘I was unprepared.'” - Jill Angelo, CEO of Gennev Integrated care in menopause Gennev's purpose is deeply rooted in integrated care with dedicated healthcare experts on staff. OBGYNs provide medical guidance, diagnosis, and even prescription support. A team of health coaches and registered dieticians address nutrition, fitness, sleep, and mindfulness. With Gennev's model, women can see a doctor and a health coach and continue to work with that coach monthly on a unique plan created just for them.Additionally, Gennev has used innovation to set up an online menopause assessment. The data collected provides valuable information about women, solving the current industry gap of lack of sufficient intelligence to help support women better. “When you think about ‘how do you bring women relief from their experience in menopause?' You've got to think about the whole person in whole-person care. And so our model is all about integrated care. " - Jill Angelo Related: Connect with Jill Angelo on LinkedIn. How do we effectively start the conversation about menopause? How do we take a holistic approach to menopause and healthcare in general? What impact has the pandemic had on preventative care? Is telemedicine the answer? Jill Angelo joins us on the SuperAge podcast to discuss these questions and share how her company, Gennev, is offering a more rounded approach to healthcare for women. Gennev is a virtual clinic for women 40+. Their doctors, health coaches, wellness products and community specialize in supporting women through their perimenopause and post menopause years. Gennev’s approach is a holistic one — they take into account the physical as well as the emotional to provide the best treatment strategy. “You don’t need to suffer. And most women kind of suffer in silence.”“Your general healthcare needs to consider body and mind. And I think you’re going to start to see a melding of the two coming together versus “I go to my therapist for my emotional wellbeing, or my counselor, or whomever. And I go to my primary care physician for everything physical.” “In our care model, we give you access to a doctor and to a health coach and also to a therapist if you need that as well. They’re your care team.”“Any group of people that’s going through transition needs community.” “‘Gen’ is ‘generation’ and ‘nev’ in old Irish means “radiant”. So we really see ourselves as supporting this next generation of women through the most radiant years of their lives.”Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you stream your podcasts. Menopause is the big M-word every woman experiences, but no one talks about it. In the realm of women's health, we're usually more focused on pregnancy and childbirth. There's a societal aversion to talking about menopause, and the physical and emotional changes we go through. This does women a huge disservice. If we don't talk about menopause enough, it's hard to find the solutions we need, and celebrate this time in our lives. What changes can we expect in menopause? How do we accept this new normal, feel more at home in a changing body, and manage the symptoms? How does this phase of our life set the tone for our health as we age? In this episode, I'm joined by Jill Angelo, the CEO and founder of Gennev, the first-ever online clinic for women in menopause. We talk about this very important subject in women's health, and how to navigate it with positive discussions. Guest Bio Jill is the CEO and founder of Gennev whose mission is to empower women to take control of their health. Gennev is the first-ever online clinic for women in menopause and offers telemedicine access to OBGYNs, menopause health coaches, wellness products, and free education. Prior to running Gennev, Jill had a 20-year career in tech, with 15 of those years spent at Microsoft in executive roles such as Chief of Staff to the CMO, Director of Global Media, and Product Management for Emerging Markets. Jill recently joined the Board of Directors for Special Olympics of Washington. To take the Menopause Assessment visit https://gennev.com/assessment (https://gennev.com/assessment).
When Team Gennev went looking for the right face to put on our website, we had a good idea what we were looking for: a face that showed the strength, resilience, beauty, and energy of a woman in midlife and menopause. It can be hard to find images of mature women doing anything besides fanning themselves and looking annoyed. Happily, we finally found lots of incredible choices on the Ageist website: active women over 50 living their best lives, overcoming challenges, and full of the "zest" Margaret Mead was talking about. We went a little crazy with the credit card, purchasing the rights to use these wonderful images of real women. As Ageist founder David Stewart said in his podcast with Gennev's Jill Angelo, we just don't see ourselves in the typical, commercial images of people our age. So when you come across a treasure trove of representative images, you take advantage. One of the images we loved was that of Aliza Sherman — we loved it so much, she graces Gennev's home page with her wide-open smile. You can just feel the hum of energy and life flowing through her. Not long ago, @AlizaSherman tweeted, "Yes, that’s me. Apparently I’m the happy face of menopause." Team Gennev had been wanting to reach out and ask her to do a podcast; this was the nudge we needed. What follows is that conversation. Learn more about Gennev and how we help women thrive through menopause and beyond at Gennev.com.

38 million women are going through menopause at any one time. Talk about a sizeable market with high need to know. With all those challenges, Jill is trying to bring menopause out of hiding and women out of silent suffering.

Elizabeth MacBride is a highly accomplished journalist, writer, and editor, having written for CNBC, BBC Capital, Crain's New York, Advertising Age, the Washington Post, and the Christian Science Monitor, among others. Her passion for entrepreneurship led her to found The Times of Entrepreneurship, a free, weekly newsletter covering entrepreneurs on the biggest challenges facing the world: climate, health, education, security, and more. With focuses on female, older, and immigrant entrepreneurs, The Times of Entrepreneurship seeks to have the broadest range of voices, especially those who are often left out of the conversation. In this interview with Gennev CEO and co-founder Jill Angelo, they discuss mature women's advantages in leadership, including a wealth of "social capital," deep understanding of emotional patterns and how they influence behavior, and the surge of self-confidence that comes to so many women as they age.
CEO of Gennev, Jill Angelo, is changing the stigma associated with women’s health in the second half of their life with the first-ever online clinic for women in menopause. Prior to starting Gennev, Jill had a 20-year career in tech, with 15 of those years at Microsoft in executive roles. During this episode, Jill shares details of her life growing up on a farm, her background in speech communication, how the idea for Gennev came to be during her sabbatical and the impact being on The NBC Today Show had on the business. We also have an open conversation with Jill about menopause – the symptoms, statistics and ways to manage, the importance of diversity of thought in the workplace and being fueled by a desire to be meaningful.
Darcey Steinke has written a wholly original book about menopause. And it's wonderful. She starts with her own experience, then leads us on a journey that explores the biological, sociological, and cultural realities women have faced and continue facing during this part of their lives. And how it's time those "realities" underwent some real scrutiny. Darcey argues that menopause can and should be transformative – a unique opportunity to embrace a new, rich, potentially very altered self. Once genneve CEO Jill Angelo heard Darcey on NPR's All Things Considered, she was eager to meet the woman who spoke so openly and honestly about the changes menopause can have on bodies, sex, relationships, and our own identities as women. When she learned Darcey was coming to Seattle (home to genneve HQ) to speak about her book, Jill reached out. What follows is an incredibly lively, fun, and inspiring conversation. We hope you enjoy it, and if you're able to attend Darcey's show in Seattle, we'll see you there!
Many women aren't familiar with the term "perimenopause," even though it could explain their suddenly unpredictable periods, night sweats, and even crappier PMS. Doctor of Pharmacy Dr. Anna Garrett is on a mission to help women better understand their bodies – and help us all better understand the hormonal journey women travel throughout their lives. In this podcast with genneve CEO Jill Angelo, Dr. Anna discusses why 35 isn't "too early" to start talking about and preparing for perimenopause and menopause, how these two phases of a woman's life differ, and why it's so important to all women's health to have open conversations about hormones. Have a listen, then check out Dr. Anna's book, Perimenopause: The Savvy Sister's Guide to Hormone Harmony.
Our hosts head to the Female Founders Alliance Champion Awards gala, and interview founder Leslie Feinzaig as well as the award winners: Julie Pham, Molly Moon Neitzel, Yoko Okano, Jill Angelo, Shellie Willis, Judy Loehr, Laura Espriu, Jennifer Arlem Molina, and Mar Brettmann. Colleen speaks with Lisa Hufford, the Founder and CEO of Simplicity Consulting, and the author of Navigating the Talent Shift. The show wraps with a conversation about Ellevest’s recent $33 million funding raise.
In 2002, the Women's Health Initiative released the results of its study, claiming use of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) increased a woman's risk of breast cancer. Almost overnight, use plummeted, leaving a great many women without a good alternative for managing their menopause symptoms. In their book Estrogen Matters, Dr. Avrum Bluming and Dr. Carol Tavris take a deep and detailed look at the WHI study and its conclusions. Not only, they argue, did the WHI unnecessarily frighten women and leave them suffering with very real symptoms, they may also have prevented women from taking a life-changing, even life-prolonging treatment. In this podcast with genneve CEO Jill Angelo and genneve Director of Health ob/gyn Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su, Drs. Tavris and Bluming take us through their research and make a compelling case for the safety and effectiveness of HRT. If you're in or approaching menopause, this podcast and the book Estrogen Matters can help you better understand HRT, its true risks, and the very real benefits it can offer. There's already a shortage of ob/gyns in the US, making it even more difficult for women to find a menopause specialist. According to Fortune Magazine, "By 2020, there will be a shortage of up to 8,800 OB-GYNs, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. And by 2050, the shortage may grow to 22,000." What are the consequences to women's health if there aren't enough ob/gyns to fill the need? genneve CEO Jill Angelo talked with genneve Director of Health, ob/gyn and menopause specialist Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su, about the strain this puts on women, on physicians, and on the health care system as a whole. They also discussed how genneve's telehealth is an excellent way to help fill the care gap for women in midlife and menopause. I'm revisiting a topic that we talked about in a previous episode, which is menopause This time it's not so much from the medical standpoint or a provider's standpoint. It's more about the invisibility that tends to happen in that time of life: the lack of information, the lack of support, the lack of understanding and how isolated and alone women can feel as they're getting into their midlife. Women can almost feel as though they've fallen through the cracks at this point. I wanted to do this episode more on the social and support aspects of menopause and what it's like to try to go through that time feeling empowered and vibrant and alive and confident instead of what so frequently happens, which is almost like a setback. I can't remember if I read this somewhere, somebody called it the second adolescence, but it's a little bit reminiscent of that. Who am I? How do I fit in? Where's my place? Do I feel empowered or not? Do I just want to hide? So much of what somebody can go through at 12, 13, 14 can almost resurface in middle age. I've connected with Jill Angelo, and she is the founder and CEO of Genneve, which is a healthcare management solution for women in Midlife. The mission of Genneve is to empower women to take charge of their health and feel their best, confident, and most sexy selves and that just appealed to me. In addition to the medical episode we did about menopause and what people can expect, this is more, “where can people go to make this an empowered transition and maybe the best years of their life instead of feeling like they'd been set back?” Genneve is about women helping women and professionals helping women, all working together to find menopause solutions. Jill is tech exec turned women's health care advocate, and she's bringing her passion for women's development and health together with her technology experience to build this new organization, Genneve. She's a driving force for bringing effective health solutions, information, and resources to women in the most vibrant years of their life. So, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Jill Angelo. “In the next three minutes, 3 people will develop Alzheimer’s. Two of them will be women.” As neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Mosconi says in her article, “Alzheimer’s and Women’s Health, an Urgent Call,” while women account for two-thirds of Alzheimer’s cases, little is being done to understand why simply being a woman significantly increases your risk of developing the disease. Dr. Mosconi is Associate Director of the Weill Cornell Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, where she and her colleagues are working to understand this critical – and critically overlooked – piece of women’s healthcare. Team genneve came across this story because Dr. Mosconi and others have linked Alzheimer’s disease with menopause. They postulate that as estrogen levels subside in a woman’s body as she ages, so do its neurological protections. As Dr. Mosconi puts it: “In straight talk: menopause causes metabolic changes in the brain that seem to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” “In straight talk: menopause causes metabolic changes in the brain that seem to increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.” Fortunately, as Dr. Mosconi has helped identify the problem, she has also helped point to some powerful solutions. Exercise and nutrition, she says, can play a significant role in preventing cognitive decline. In Part 1 of her podcast with genneve CEO Jill Angelo, Dr. Mosconi explains the mechanism behind menopause and Alzheimer’s risk. Come back for Part 2, where she discusses how women can protect their brains as they age. Learn more about Dr. Mosconi, the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic, and how you might participate in their research. Jill Angelo realized that there were few resources for women in midlife to learn about the changes happening in their bodies. So she set out to create one as co-founder and CEO of genneve, a digital health solution to help women in midlife feel fabulous in their bodies.
Jill Angelo, CEO of genneve, sat down with holistic health coach Amanda Giralmo of WellthieLife to talk about food, chronic inflammation, and how we can make better food choices to support our health. 1:11 Discovering our life’s true path often starts with fixing a problem within ourselves. For Amanda Giralmo, founder of Wellthie Life, bringing herself back to health and wholeness after a difficult divorce helped her uncover her passion for leading others to their best selves. She tells us how she found the strength to take that journey. 3:24 Did she feel she needed permission to take that journey, considering it meant taking time off and focusing on herself? We asked her how she came to that very necessary decision. 4:39 The experience brought her to where she is now, helping others as a certified holistic health coach focused on lowering inflammation. So, we asked her, what is inflammation, what causes it, and why is it so bad for us when it becomes “chronic”? Amanda explains the importance of the gut microbiome and how long-term inflammation damages the good bacteria we depend on for optimal health. (Ever heard the expression “leaky gut”?) What are the long-term consequences of inflammation? 9:22 Chronic inflammation caused by eating the wrong foods can be constant, if you consider how often we eat. Fifty million people – at least – suffer an autoimmune disease in the US. Knowing the right foods to eat for our bodies can help us avoid that fate, Amanda says. 10:26 So what are the symptoms? So many people have chronic inflammation due to eating foods they’re sensitive to, so clearly we’re not all as in-tune with our bodies as we should be. How can we know we need to change? 11:49 How does this condition start? Amanda tells us that formation of a healthy gut goes all the way back to how we’re born and our very first food. She also tells us what we do as adults that can cause inflammation besides eating the wrong foods. 14:25 As Amanda knows from her own personal story, stress is a major cause of inflammation. She talks about how stress affects us and what happens when we’re not able to “rest and digest.” 15:25 OK, so we’re chronically inflamed. If that inflammation isn’t reduced or eliminated, what can happen? The consequences can be pretty dire, Amanda warns us. Hear why you want to reduce that inflammation, like, yesterday. 16:17 What’s the difference between a food allergy and a reactivity or sensitivity? Both are signs of chronic inflammation, Amanda tells us, but allergies may be easier to detect. Because sensitivities can be slow and sneaky, we tend to just live with the discomfort for years. Amanda gives us the simple diagnostic. 17:34 Does aging have anything to do with inflammation? Yes, says Amanda, particularly in women, the lack of reproductive hormones makes chronic inflammation more apparent in women in midlife. She tells us the thinking around the intersection between inflammation and menopause. 18:34 Amanda has developed a three-phase program to help her clients eliminate harmful foods from their diet. Through the program, clients heal their bodies by identifying what causes the reactivity and learning to avoid or manage those triggers – with Amanda providing resources, guidance, and support throughout. 20:57 The program takes time to work through: Amanda gives us an idea of how long it typically takes to begin healing the chronic inflammation. And you don’t get to cheat, she warns us: eating a trigger food will set your body back to start. 21:55 It’s not an easy process, but the results can be well worth the effort. Amanda shares with us a client’s experience of losing weight, regaining energy, and generally feeling like embracing life again. 24:40 The role of “coach” gets interesting when the goals are so intensely personal. Amanda tells us about keep clients honest and their need to confess and apologize when they cheat or backslide. “I’m just here to play support and accountability,” Amanda says, “It’s all about what they need to do for themselves.” 25:09 If you need Amanda, how do you find her? The quickest way is by going to her website: wellthielife.com. (It’s a great place to find a whole lot of information, incidentally.) The initial, 50-minute consultation with Amanda is complimentary. It’s important to find a coach who’s a good “fit,” Amanda tells us, so choose your coach carefully.

Counselor Mandy (Eppley)Bird speaks with Jill Angelo, a business woman and author of “Sacred Space: Turning Your Home into A Sanctuary.” When Jill was in her early 30’s she and her fiancé bought a house together that they were going to refurbish, she had a great job, she was looking forward to getting married and having children – she had her life plan all mapped out…or at least she thought. Several weeks after they had bought the house her fiancé was in a fatal car accident. The “plan” that Jill had mapped out for her life was instantly changed with this traumatic loss. She says that one of the greatest gifts from this loss was cracking her heart open to develop a relationship with God. She also knew that she needed professional support and she found a caring therapist that helped her work through the grief process. From this deep work she is able to say “I am so proud of what I have become.” Her book was born out of her life experience and the process of fixing the house – she wanted to go “within” and as she rebuilt the house she asked herself “what nurtures me?” She incorporated these things into the house which helped her to heal as she created her sacred space. Mandy says this communicates to your psyche “I love you.”Jill Angelo is author of Sacred Space: Turning Your Home Into A Sanctuary.
