It's as though we've seen two different films, with José bowled over by Joker's social commentary, Mike bored and annoyed by its perceived self-satisfaction - not to mention an audience that applauded at the end. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is explored to be a product of an uncaring, broken society that reaps in him what it sows, in a 1981 Gotham City that is the New York City of the era in all but name. José argues that the film will become a bellwether of the time, depicting the anger of the oppressed and downtrodden - Mike suggests, though, that in demonising them and aligning them to villainy, it gives the right-wing what it wants, in a vision of antifa, the enemy it believes it faces. We discuss issues of race and representation, Mike seeing similarities between some of the film's scenes and real-life historical crimes to which they may refer, and in observing racial components and changes to them, asks what the purpose may be, though, struggles to work towards an answer. And José remarks favourably upon everything aesthetic, including the way in which poverty is written into Phoenix's withered form, the expressiveness and grace of his movement, and the film's use of shallow focus. There's a lot going on in Joker, both on its own terms and in the cultural conversations it has ignited, and it may be worth a second go. Recorded on 4th October 2019.
Dario gives his spoiler free review of Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker."

Magnus takes a fond look back at Cesar Romero's Joker while looking ahead to Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. Minimal wedding discussion occurs. Zero ranting occurs. No Lord Of The Rings discussion occurs. Those two facts make this episode of TMJR rather unique.
We capsized the boat immediately in this episode and never quite managed to right ship. We do talk a lot about comics, movies, and why people need to chill out in regards to changing famous characters for various adaptations. This especially rings true when it comes to the character of the Joker, who has another iteration coming out this fall with Joaquin Phoenix's Joker movie. The booze was flowing in this one, but it was a lot of fun to record. For more great content check out www.drunkenpenwriting.com

The New Joker Film and Batman Celebrates 80 YearsBatman recently turned 80 years old and he is still saving Gotham and putting bad guys behind bars. DC has pulled out all the stops in their celebrations but none so satisfying as releasing the first teaser trailer for Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" movie.Separate from the DCEU, this standalone film will explore the origins of this iteration of the Joker as well as the depths of his inevitable madness. Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push. We discuss the trailer, Joker, and the Batman mythos as a whole.

Welcome to another episode of Conversation on Tap! In this episode of Conversation on Tap, Jose is joined once again by his brother Jesse in order to talk about upcoming comic book movies. Before they get started, Jose drank some delicious Hoppy Poppy by Figueroa Mountain Brew, while Jesse drank a New York Seltzer. As we moved into the FRED Talks, Jesse talked about his preference for DVDs and Blu-Rays over streaming devices, while Jose talked about how the Vatican is the world's smallest sovereign nation. In the main segment of the show, Jesse and Jose talked about some comic book movie updates. Unfortunately, due to Jose's busy schedule, this episode was delayed in posting by a couple of weeks, so some of the news is a bit "old," but we nonetheless enjoyed the conversation. So, we began by breaking down the Captain Marvel trailer, then segued into the images of Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, which looked a bit like Cesar Romero meets John Wayne Gacy. We then spent a good deal of time talking about the impending departure of Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill from the DC movie universe. Once again, DC really shows how they can take perfectly good comic book characters and completely destroy them! In the last segment, Jesse talked about LA Beast's YouTube Channel about competitive eating, while Jose talked about Frasier. We look forward to next week's episode, which will be on food. Thank you for your patience and for continuing to listen to our show! Cheers!

On this week's episode, Tom and a slightly tipsier than normal Jake go through quite a variety of topics, including a question of barroom etiquette, the food that Tom finds oddly disgusting, the reveal of Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker" costume, the odd controversy surrounding Batman's most important sidekick, as well as a better alternative to DC's proposed "Supergirl" movie. All of this, however, is before the heart of the episode. For years, now, Jake has been tormented by Tom in an attempt to make him watch movies outside of his comfort zone. But for this episode, the tables are turned as Tom watches a movie he's spent a quarter of a century avoiding: 1993's "Demolition Man", starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes & Sandra Bullock. So hit the "play" button and listen in to find out if Tom thinks the movie deserves it's reputation as a beloved piece of 90's nostalgia, or if he thought it was a piece of something else. And as always, be sure to help Jake and Tom in their quest for world domination by rating them highly on iTunes, sharing their stuff on social media, and by telling all of your Android using friends to listen to them via the Amazing And FREE Couch Party App, available exclusively on the Google Play Store! Here is the 107th of the Leo B. Gyllenhaal Podcast! On this episode, Sir Leo Archibald and Great Musical a.k.a. Pusha K a.k.a Joaquin Pennyworth are back to discuss if Michael Jordan should be in 'Space Jam 2', if they are impressed by Joaquin Phoenix's Joker makeup, some Michael B. Jordan stuff (which you can BET is all good) and more. So let your ears take a listen as they STILL work through the kinks and some severe rust (even after all these episodes smh). And as always, don't forget to expect more unpreparedness, getting off topic, saying names incorrectly and constantly saying "um", "yeah" and "ya know" between sentences. But don't let that scare you. You should still listen and laugh with them or at them. Listen and then comment with your thoughts and/or suggestions.
