How a little paint program became a worldwide phenomenon. Original text by Craig Hickman. Craig talks about his 8-bit Atari projects on episode 378 of the ANTIC Podcast. Apple honoured Craig in their already-zapped-from-history Macintosh 30th Anniversary website. John Sculley demonstrating Kid Pix on stage in 1991. John loves talking about “objects” the way Apple loves talking about “machine learning”. In Love Notes to Newton, Sculley claims the Newton project spurred ARM's support for “floating point and objects”. Okay, John. OOP is a software abstraction, and no MessagePad ever shipped with a hardware FPU–not even the StrongARM in the MessagePad 2000. More about ARM's relationship with hardware floating point units. Macintosh Garden has copies of Fido, Camera, and Hickman's 2005 art project Beautiful Dorena. Let Craig lead you on a guided tour through Beautiful Dorena.

It's getting hot out there. Wouldn't you like to cool off with some nice, refreshing, thirst-quenching paint? Now we know what you're thinking: "Isn't paint toxic?" But here at Left Trigger Right Trigger we don't prescribe to such pedantic categorizations like "toxic" or "healthy" or "pedantic." We just aim to make sure you're taking care of yourself the best way we can, which in this case is a big tub of paint right down your gullet.* What're our favorite ways to enjoy paint via video games? Well we're glad you asked! Giovanni gets industrious with some definitions. Greg comes face to face with his inadequacies. David discusses how much joy Pizza brings him. Tess helps shine a light on the perils of giving children wall candy. As always, a huge, huge thank you to our patrons. Your support means the world to us and we hope you'll join our discord! Guest Logan Kilpatrick Panelists Eric Berry | Justin Dorfman Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source for the long haul. We are very excited to have as our guest, Logan Kilpatrick, who is the Community Manager for the Julia Programming Language, a graduate student studying Software Engineering and Technology Law, and makes an exclusive announcement of another position he recently has taken on. Today, we are talking to Logan about the Julia Programming Language. We learn more about the role Major League Hacking played in the MLH Fellowship with Julia, why Logan is most interested in doing open source non-technical, his experience working at NASA, and the challenges he has with research papers. He also tells us about why the Julia community should not be using Slack, but maybe using Discord and Zulip in the future. Logan shares some parting advice about reaching out to people if there's opportunities that are interesting to you. Find out more and download this episode now! [00:00:22] Logan gives us a brief introduction of who he is, what he does, and what this new position is he has recently taken on. [00:01:52] NumFocus is the topic and how this all came to be for Logan, and why Julia as a programming language is so unique and special. [00:05:48] Justin brings up ML Hacks and Logan explains more about this. [00:08:04] Logan fills us in on what his Julia day-to-day tasks that he works on and his non-technical tasks so he can influence the next non-technical open source contributor. [00:11:51] Find out if the Julia Programming Language is using any tools to monitor their community engagement. Justin talks about something he uses called Orbit, which is a framework for building high gravity communities. [00:16:00] Find out the experience Logan had working with NASA! [00:18:49] Logan has so much going on in his life and Justin wonders how he finds time to do anything. [00:20:10] We learn why Logan has a bunch of challenges with research papers. [00:22:47] Eric wonders if people are not sharing the code for reasons that they don't want to give up intellectual property or that it's not completely well-formed and they just want to own it, but still want to share it. Logan gives his perspective on this. [00:25:17] Logan explains the different places you can find the Julia community and why they should not be using Slack. Eric wonders what is out there that we can use that people would adopt, and Logan talks about Discord, Zulip, and Forum Community. [00:29:09] Logan covers one more thing, going back to the convo they had about open source contributions and non-technical contributions. He also brings up Jono Bacon's book, People Powered. Quotes [00:04:46] “The estimate right now is something like a million developers or something like that, which is at a million users.” [00:05:53] “So, Major League Hacking is an incredible organization and they were sort of generous enough in the first iteration of the MLH Fellowship, which is just an opportunity for students to contribute to open source and get paid to do it by Major League Hacking and a bunch of peripheral organizations who support Major League Hacking.” [00:08:33] “I think my sort of general goal that has just come out recently for me is to make people understand that a non-technical contribution in open source is a viable way of contributing.” [00:08:58] “And the reason for that is I feel like there's more opportunities to do those non-technical contributions and there's more sort of missing pieces in the non-technical space.” [00:10:21] “Again, I think there's so much non-technical work that if someone doesn't step up and do it, it doesn't get done.” [00:20:21] “One of which is a lot of times folks don't release their code, which is sort of one of the missions of NumFocus and in a sense, “Open code equals better science.” [00:26:16] “To me, it's 100% evident and perfectly clear that we should not be using Slack.” [00:26:23] “Slack is a tool that is built for corporations to communicate with one another... It is not a tool for open source projects to be using.” [00:28:46] “In my personal opinion, Discord and Zulip will probably be the two that are fighting each other in the future with respect to places that communities go and meet.” [00:29:22] “I think something that is perhaps might be obvious to some people, might not be obvious to some people, but really, non-technical contributions in my opinion are the pathway to making a code contribution.” [00:30:58] “I think my parting suggestion for people that I always try to instill whenever I have the opportunity to talk to people that I don't know through the internet is take the opportunities to reach out to folks that you don't know if there's opportunities that are interesting to you.” Spotlight [00:31:55] Logan's spotlight is the tool Julia's visualization package Makie. [00:32:29] Eric's spotlight is a suite of tools called Setapp. [00:33:03] Justin's spotlight is Kid Pix. Good morning, RVA! It’s 42 °F, and highs will climb back up in the 60s. Tonight / tomorrow the rain comes and you’ll likely be stuck inside, so (safely) spend a little time outside today.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 254 positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth, and six people in Virginia have died as a result of the virus. VDH reports 28 cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 9, Henrico: 11, and Richmond: 8).Yesterday the Governor closed schools through the end of the academic year and levied new restrictions on businesses. Ned Oliver at the Virginia Mercury has the details and you can read the Governor’s press release and Executive Order here. I’ll get to schools in a bit, but now there’s a whole list of businesses considered non-essential that must close by tomorrow, including: Theatres, museums, gyms, salons, barber shops, tattoo shops, bowling alleys, arcades, zoos, and escape rooms. Restaurants, however, may remain open but only to offer delivery and/or takeout. Conversely, now there’s a whole list of businesses that are considered essential and may remain open, including: Grocery stores, dollar stores, labs, cell phone retailers, automotive repair facilities, home improvement stores, liquor stores, gas stations, banks, office supply stores, and laundromats. If your store isn’t on the list you’ve got to “limit all in-person shopping to no more than 10 patrons per establishment, adhere to social distancing recommendations, sanitize common surfaces, and apply relevant workplace guidance from state and federal authorities.” I think this allows bike shops, another essential retail business, to stay open. The Governor also upped his recommendation against gatherings of more than 10 people to an official ban, beginning tomorrow. Then, at 7:30 PM last night, the Chief Executives of Virginia, D.C., and Maryland (of which the governor is one) issued a joint statement asking the federal government to provide additional support to the region because the region is home to the…federal government. Perhaps this was in response to Trump’s bananas comments that run counter to his own public health officials about ending social distancing and restarting the country’s economy in a couple of weeks. You should read RPS Superintendent Kamras’s response to the Governor closing schools for the rest of the school year. To quote a bit, “These are truly unprecedented times. While every family is facing new challenges, I am most concerned about those within our community who already struggle with the injustices that come with poverty, institutionalized racism, and/or immigration status. This extended closure will only amplify these injustices. At RPS, we will move heaven and earth to support these – and all – families in our community. And we will make sure our employees continue to get paid, have full benefits, and receive the support they need to navigate these very difficult times. I want to reiterate what I said to our students in my first closure message: RPS may be officially closed, but we are always open to support you in any way we can. If you need anything at all – anything – please email me at jkamras@rvaschools.net. We are here for your and we love you.” In the aforelinked Virginia Mercury piece, Ned Oliver has some details on what the heck this means for students moving forward, and the Superintendent says the Virginia Department of Education will provide some guidance today. Stay tuned.Yesterday afternoon, the City announced that they’ve had an employee test positive for COVID-19. This pushed City Council to cancel their regularly scheduled meeting, saying “In taking a leadership role on behalf of Richmond residents and with the upmost caution and responsibility with regard to the Governor’s statewide ban on gatherings of more than 10 persons and today’s announcement by the Mayor of a city employee testing positive for COVID-19, Richmond City Council has canceled its Formal Meeting scheduled for tonight. This meeting will not take place and proposed legislation on the docket will be rescheduled for a future date.” As I said yesterday, I’m interested in (and now starting to get nervous about) how local governments can continue to meet and pass important legislation during This Most Unusual Time. Council even had a plan in place to adhere to the 10-person gathering ban and social distancing requirements! But still they canceled! Unfortunately, now I’m not sure how the legislation (ORD. 2020–092) to extend the deadlines (originally March 31st) for tax exemptions gets passed. Maybe they’ll revisit their plan of attack and call a special meeting next week?Martin Wegbreit from Central Virginia Legal Aid Society has a column in the Richmond Times-Dispatch about how the Virginia Supreme Court decree around stopping evictions hasn’t yet had the intended effect. At least in Richmond, as of yesterday, it sounds like courts are starting to get the message. How are folks supposed to #stayhome if they’re getting kicked out of their homes!Let me quote this tweet from Matthew Yglesias in full: “So that people can have places to go outside while maintaining distance, cities should look at opportunists to close streets to vehicle traffic so there’s more space for joggers, random walks, and kids running in circles to blow off steam.” Local transportation expert Mariia Zimmerman suggests Monument Avenue—both in the City and County—and I agree.@RTDBrainTrust has put together their now-annual RVA Journalist Tournament, and the Round of 64 is now open for voting: First side of the bracket here, second side of the bracket here. There are some really fascinating matchups, but the marquee head-to-head in this first round has to be the RTD’s Mark Robinson vs. Michael Paul Williams. Absolutely brutal. We’ve got no more sports, so let this totally-for-fun, good-natured thing temporarily fill the sports-shaped hole in your life. This morning’s longreadNaked and Very, Very AfraidWhat’s it like to be on Naked and Afraid? Terrible? Awesome? Awesomely terrible? All the cameras staring. I took off my bra. Deep breath. Stepped out of my underwear. Here I was, naked. “Great!” said Rachel. “Now put it all back on, and we’ll film from a different angle.” I only took off my clothes twice. That was something Rachel had warned me, that the first day was “television.” I’d follow the script, if not by words then by action: two people remove their clothes, walk to a landmark, meet each other, and offer whatever joke or earnest greeting they’ve rehearsed. They find burlap bags, which disguise their microphone transmitters, and a map, which always looks like it was made with Kid Pix. They locate a water source, head toward it—and the rest of the challenge is up to them. No script, no guidelines, no plan. Rachel showed me the map: patches of yellow, dotted with garish clip art of lions and crocodiles. I laughed. As long as I was naked, I might as well make friends with the crew. “OK,” I said. “We all know these maps are ridiculous, right?” “I made the map,” said Rachel. “It’s really good,” I said.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.

Craig Hickman, Atari Photography Software and Security System Craig Hickman was featured in the June 1982 edition of Atari Connection magazine for his photography software tools. "Craig has developed two programs written in Atari BASIC for use in his darkroom. One of the programs times the negative’s development, and the other monitors and times enlargements and the making of the positive prints." His Developing program could store up to 30 film processing combinations. "Once the film is developed into a negative, you are ready to use Craig's Enlarger/Timer program to make a positive print." The Atari 400 was connected to the enlarger with relays: the computer would turn the enlarger on and off at precise intervals for making photographic prints. Craig also rigged up an apartment security system using his Atari 400, which he wrote about in an article on his web site. He wrote: "I designed a home surveillance system for our apartment in Seattle that used little magnetic switches from Radio Shack. It displayed a representation of our apartment on the screen and showed when a door or window was open. It worked so well I expanded the system to include little tilt switches placed on bushes outside the windows. This also worked fine until one windy night when I was away from home and it set off the alarm every few minutes. The next day my wife told me to dismantle it." Later, Craig created the popular program Kid Pix for the early Macintosh computer. This interview took place on January 29, 2020. See the show notes for links to Craig's web site and YouTube channel, and the Atari Connection magazine article. Students have been learning about the animal world this term. Some senior students (Years 5-8) have chosen an animal, and used Kid Pix to draw it in its natural environment. Students were then photographed against a 'green' screen, and their photos put together with their drawing in Keynote. The alpha key tool was then used to merge them into the drawing with their animal. We hope you enjoy the result (apologies for the quality of the photos in this compressed file), and thanks to S. Taylor at Whakarongo School, New Zealand, for sharing the ideas on how to do this, at the recent ULearn08 Conference. 2:20 minutes, 2.7 MB, Quicktime Movie file (.mov)
For some unknown reason some of our laptop animations in Kid Pix ceased to work. After a little web browsing I found a fix and a reason why! After updating Quicktime the newer version allows for Flash animations to be turned off or on. It defaults to off. You need to go to Quicktime and switch them back on again. This podcast will show you how to do that. Hope it will be useful.
By accident really we found that we could upgrade Kid Pix 3 to allow us to make a podcast using Kid Pix instead of our usual Garageband. Once we got the hang of it it was a piece of cake. You just make a picture that has sound recorded on to it and then make a slideshow of those files and then export the whole lot to Ipod. We can't edit our sound bytes like we can in Garageband but the end result is great with more of the children's creativity expressed in their own art work taken with a background of iconic Nelson photographs. It does sound soft to start with but it gets stronger later in the podcast. Cool transitions, eh???
Nikki's New Entrant class have been learning about the Lynley Dodd's books. Lynley Dodd is a very well known New Zealand author. Slinky Malinki is a cheeky and friendly cat by day and master stealer by night. Each child drew a picture of Slinky Malinki in Kid Pix and then recorded a rich caption to go with it. Nikki put it all together into a slideshow & movie and I turned it into a podcast. Quite a collaborative effort. Well done Waimea class.
