Send us a textAs a kid, Ben Knighten took piano lessons for a few years, which he considers his first true musical experience. In middle school, he started playing drums, and in high school, he got an acoustic guitar, learning songs on it through high school and college. After his first experimentations with songwriting, he put more time and energy into developing his songwriting and performance skills at open mics and coffee shop gigs. After a while, he realized he wanted to collaborate musically with others and started learning the mandolin, a more collaborative instrument, in response.Knighten and fellow musician Darren Thornberry have been connected for over a decade now. Between 2010 and 2015, Thornberry, who has also played in many other bands in the past (including heavier bands) and written songs for most of his life, reviewed local musicians through Stubborn Sounds. Knighten reached out as a musician, and the two started playing together as a duo and have become close friends. Around two years ago, they put out a Craigslist ad for a string player to round out their sound. Carey Lewis, who has been a violin player from a very young age and went to college for violin performance, responded to the call. He had already planned to move to Colorado from Texas, so the timing was perfect. With the sound rounded out and the trio cemented, The Lofty Pines was born. It took some time, but having my first Tik Tok influencer as a guest on FLIP IT ON ITS HEAD was certainly worth the wait. Kellee Knighten Hough, who by trade is a theater actress, has spent the better part of 14 years using her online presence to discuss the importance of voting, of participating in this country's electoral process. From blog posts on her MySpace page to her now viral Tik Tok's, some of which get over one million views, she uses her distinctive and sometimes confrontational style to try and edify watchers on not being indifferent to the role they play in our country and the laws we all live with. We discuss low voter turnout, shifting demographics, White supremacy and its impact on the Republican party and the need to not lose hope, but to VOTE HEAUX! She yells, she cajoles, she informs, she confronts and she always, always brings receipts! In Pontotoc County, a suspect has been arrested in connection with a bizarre weekend homicide case. Just outside the city limits of Ada, the incident occurred Saturday afternoon. Larry Doil Sanders, 53, admitted to a family member that he had killed Jimmy Knighten along the South Canadian River. Sheriff John Christian said Sanders appeared to be under the influence of something. According to him, Mr. Knighten summoned 'Bigfoot' to kill him; that's why he killed him." In a statement released by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Sanders and Knighten were noodling in the river when a confrontation ensued. Knighten was reported to have been struck and strangled by Sanders. It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that search agencies and the Pontotoc County Sheriff's Department found the victim's body. Investigators are now trying to uncover the details of the crime. Christian said, "It always makes things easier.". You still have to prove all the elements of the crime, and that the suspect is telling the truth. Sanders was charged with first degree murder by OSBI agents. When we hear the term “smart” device, words that may come into our minds are easy, convenient, or technologically advanced, but consumers and designers alike underestimate the challenges smart devices may create for the companies that are trying to test them, especially in the audio realm. On today's Pro AV podcast, we hear from Daniel Knighten, vice president of product development for Audio Precision. “Smart” from Knighten's perspective has “translated into adding a speaker and microphone to every device under the sun,” including refrigerators and even toilets, Knighten said. He gets a lot of calls from companies who have never dealt with audio devices before who are now trying to test audio signals in devices that may not have specifically been built to support them. Knighten explained that audio experts are used to dealing with devices where there's an input and output and traditional audio measurement where testers can simply input an audio signal and check for the output of that signal to see how it's changed. In a cloud-based atmosphere, companies like Apple, for example, have stated that they will never release audio that's recorded by a HomePod; it's become a real challenge to learn the figures of the input the way the machine “hears” it when it's almost impossible to inject or extract a test signal. These “audio roach motels,” as Knighten calls them, remove the simplicity from testing; testers have to upload a variety of noises into the cloud, get them onto a built in audio player, then order the smart device to play them in open-loop testing. It has become so inconvenient that Knighten thinks some of these tests may be suffering, particularly when the machine itself changes the variables by adapting to different environments automatically.
