October 14 is Indigenous Peoples' Day, and we're honoring the occasion by chatting with middle blocker Lauren Schad. From Rapid City, South Dakota, Lauren is a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Tribe and celebrates her culture as much as possible, which can be difficult for long parts of the year as she has played professionally in France for six seasons. Despite the distance, Lauren has always felt support from the Indigenous community and gives back by hosting volleyball clinics or supporting organizations that raise awareness of the missing and murdered Indigenous women epidemic. From South Dakota to San Diego to continental Europe, Lauren has brought her culture to wherever she's lived. We're honored for her to share it with LOVB today. Topics include: Honoring the Cheyenne River Lakota Tribal tradition Finding volleyball through a layup College on the west coast Realizing that going pro is an option Overcoming isolation in her rookie year Growing the game in Native communities Induction into the Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame Giving those who cannot speak the opportunity to do so Retiring from volleyball and rediscovering joy in volleyball Rug-making and textile work Follow Lauren on Instagram and Facebook. According to a recent study, about 4-6% of all those incarcerated are considered to be wrongly imprisoned. That's over 70,000 people who are wrongly incarcerated every year. Today's guest, Justin Brooks has dedicated his life to representing those who have fallen victim to wrongful incarceration. Justin practiced as a criminal defense attorney in Washington, D.C., Michigan, Illinois, and California in both the trial and appellate courts. He was the founding director of the California Innocence Project at Cal Western Law School from 1999-2023, and under his direction the project freed 40 innocent people from prison (including former NFL player Brian Banks). He's been recognized several times by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California, and in 2010 and 2012, California Lawyer Magazine honored him with the “Lawyer of the Year” award. He was named “International Lawyer of the Year” by the California Bar International Section in 2020 and in the same year was named “Champion of Justice” by the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. In his latest book, “You Might Go to Prison Even Though You're Innocent” he details the causes of wrongful convictions based on his experience of more than three decades as a criminal defense attorney and innocence organization director. Justin took time to share his experience with us writing the book, over 30 years of legal work, and why everybody should care about wrongful convictions and the ramifications it has for our society. This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

Lately it feels like politicians are favoring smaller groups of their constituents over the majority of them. If you've been skeptical about whether this favoritism exists, there's a new theory that supports it. Some voters who are more vocal or intense about political issues are more likely to get their local politician's attention, and these smaller groups of constituents are more likely to get what they want.In his new book, Frustrated Majorities: How Issue Intensity Enables Smaller Groups of Voters to Get What They Want, University of San Diego political scientist Seth J. Hill uses new empirical evidence to tackle a question that has been floating on the radar: Is democracy broken or are politicians becoming more undemocratic with their approach to win votes?

Quincy and I are back for another Q&A episode in which we answer your questions! In this episode, we tackle questions about innovating to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering curricula while pointing to faculty and programs that are exemplars and the connections to ABET requirements. One thing we did not emphasize in our discussion of equitable and communication as part of an innovative curriculum, but should have, is that communication is not a one-way street that's focused on delivering content. It is very much multidirectional, involving information sharing amongst different groups at different levels in different ways. We wrap up with discussions of how to challenge inequities without (or while) being perceived as a threat, and whether industry or academia should be at the forefront of driving change. When you listen, please do these three (3) things for me:Take a moment to SUBSCRIBE, leave a 5-STAR RATING, a GREAT REVIEW, and SHARE with others.Follow me and #EngineeringChangePodcast on Twitter.Visit engineeringchangepodcast.com for more information and to connect with me.

On this episode, MindStrong Project founder Harvey Martin and Strength Coach Brian Peters have an amazingly energizing conversation with Rich Hill, the Head Baseball Coach at the University of San Diego. In our conversation, Coach Hill shares his thoughts on how his success in coaching has been so sustainable. A few themes stuck out - Relationships and Connection. Coach Hill leans on influences such as Brené Brown, Nick Saban, and Mike Krzyzewski. He expresses an approach of treating players with firmness, while also being an authentic human. Brian and Harvey reflect how their own relationships with their leaders have held similar sentiments. Furthermore, Coach Hill discusses the importance of cultivating a strong mindset. He dives into the benefit of having a dynamic mental toolbox, and learning how to interact with fear. One overarching theme encompassed the entire conversation - Gratitude. Throughout the entire show, Coach Hill's mindset of abundance and appreciation were both inspiring and contagious. Coach Hill has built the USD Toreros into one of the premier Division I baseball programs on the West Coast. In his 33 years as a head coach at the collegiate level (22 at USD), he Coach Hill has amassed 28 winning seasons and is the youngest coach in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with 1,000 wins. He is also the winningest coach, both active and all-time, in the WCC. Coach Hill has seen his Toreros win 6 conference championships, and garnered national attention regularly - being ranked or receiving votes in 15 consecutive years. Hill has coached dozens of All-Americans, a handful of Major Leaguers- highlighted by the Chicago Cubs' Kris Bryant, reached 8 NCAA tournaments, hosted an NCAA regional as a National seed in 2007, and was the U.S. Collegiate National Team Head Coach in 2015. From our conversation with Coach, we also gathered that he is chasing every competitive edge possible, and leaning on his faith to impact the lives of collegiate players daily. Coach Hill spends his days surfing, doing breathwork and meditation, speaking, and aiming to connect with others in the most authentic and vulnerable way. After spending just an hour with Coach Hill, it's no surprise to see the success he's had at USD. ***Special Thanks to our great friend and mentor Logan Gelbrich, a former USD Torero himself, who connected us with Coach Hill.

Trademark law and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution seem from the outset to have a complex and conflicted relationship. Indeed, while protection of the right to freedom of expression can encourage the creation and dissemination of ideas and information, government protection of trademarks can suppress and punish expression that incorporates another's registered trademark. Even further, trademark law sometimes prevents registration of signs that would otherwise be considered speech protected by the First Amendment, with numerous and strict conditions on what may or may not be registered. Lisa P. Ramsey, Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law, who teaches in the areas of trademark law and intellectual property in general, will explain the interactions between free expression and trademark law. Lisa’s most recent articles in the Houston Law Review, The Trademark Reporter, and other publications put the focus on the potential conflict between trademark and free expression rights in national and international laws; and a paper published by Oxford University Press explored nontraditional trademarks and inherently valuable expression. She notably talks about two recent groundbreaking U.S. Supreme Court cases right on point, namely Matal v. Tam (2017) and Iancu v. Brunetti (2019) about the right for the government to deny trademark registration to certain categories of trademarks “potentially disparaging” marks and “immoral or scandalous” marks, respectively.Every two weeks, on Tuesday, Brand & New gives the floor to inspiring individuals, with a 360-degree vision, to help brand owners, intellectual property lawyers, and marketing and finance professionals (and beyond!) stay curious and agile in an ever-evolving business environment.
