Ooh, this conversation with Kyira Wackett was so good! Kyira hosts her own podcast, Untethering Shame, and brought such a necessary conversation for me, as every week I'm talking about all of these cool people who are doing amazing things in sustainability, and this week we're talking about SHAME, which feels so important right now. It's so true, and I often think about people who feel shame around sustainability - folks who feel like if they can't afford the expensive things that say sustainable on them, they're not allowed to feel like a part of the solution. I feel it, too! I've had people that I know hang their head and mention something they feel bad about around plastic/recycling or composting; like I'm a perfect person who does everything right... I'm also human - AND if you notice, I'm talking to these folks so I can learn, too, and highlight what THEY'RE doing... Nobody's perfect, and there's no such thing (that I'm aware of) as perfect sustainability. We should only be comparing ourselves to our yesterday self, and nobody else. Easier said than done, I know, but that's the goal- Kyira, a licensed therapist AND coach, has so many enlightening thoughts on this topic, obviously, and I'm thrilled that she was able to share them with us all, and hopefully not just ease our minds but also empower us.These are her words, from her guest form: "There is no all or nothing, you don't have to be perfect, and that the fear we all have about the state of the world is real, but that it can't be your primary motivation, or you will get stuck in pain and fear and negative self-talk. The pressure will be rooted to the wrong purpose." YouTube is where Kyira is most active - here's her channel: https://www.youtube.com/@adversityrising You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is www.amysgardenjam.comHow Do I Get There From Here by Jane Bolduc - listen to more at www.janebolduc.comPodcast cover by Becca Kofron- follow here on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/cute_but_loud/ and/or check out her awesome art projects here: https://www.cutebutloud.com/ Grounded in Maine Podcast is hosted by Buzzsprout, the easiest podcast hosting platform. This is an episode from the podcast Untethering Shame with Kyira Wackett, who invited me to appear on her show. Here is her overview of the episode:In this episode, Dr. Rose Aslan and I discuss shame, fear, and Islamophobia. We explore how these forces perpetuate systems of oppression and uphold patriarchal structures of power. We also discuss the importance of recognizing the humanity of individuals and the need to untether ourselves from shame. Dr. Aslan shares her personal journey of activism and using her voice to bring awareness to social justice issues alongside her experiences as a Muslim woman in academia and the challenges she faced in navigating different worlds. She highlights the power of social media in giving voice to marginalized communities and the privilege that often accompanies academic credentials. Dr. Aslan shares her journey of leaving academia and focusing on supporting women in creating change in their lives. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and finding balance in order to make a meaningful impact. The conversation also touches on the need for authentic activism and the role of marketing in perpetuating stereotypes and Islamophobia.TakeawaysShame, fear, and Islamophobia are interconnected and perpetuate systems of oppression.Recognizing the humanity of individuals is crucial in dismantling these systems.Using our voices and platforms to bring awareness to social justice issues is important.Untethering ourselves from shame is necessary for personal and collective liberation. Social media has given marginalized communities a powerful platform to share their experiences and challenge dominant narratives.Academic credentials often come with privilege and can grant individuals access to mainstream media platforms, even if they lack direct experience or understanding of the communities they speak about.Finding balance and practicing self-care is essential for sustaining activism and making a meaningful impact.Authentic activism requires going beyond performative actions and engaging in deep reflection and understanding of the issues at hand.Marketing plays a significant role in perpetuating stereotypes and Islamophobia, and it is important to challenge and dismantle these narratives.Creating space for marginalized voices and supporting women in their journeys of self-discovery and empowerment can have a ripple effect in creating positive change. 00:00 - Introduction and Welcome01:01 - Dr. Rose Aslan's Journey and Dedication to Empowerment06:05 - Navigating the Challenges of Life08:37 - The Ebb and Flow of Life33:21 - The Power of Social Media and Amplifying Marginalized Voices34:12 - Navigating Different Worlds: Challenges in Academia36:05 - Finding Balance and Practicing Self-Care in Activism38:35 - Authentic Activism: Going Beyond Performative Actions42:10 - The Role of Marketing in Perpetuating Stereotypes and Islamophobia53:21 - Supporting Women in Creating Change: A Ripple EffectSupport the Show.Find out more about Rose's work here: https://lnk.bio/dr.rose.aslanWebsite: https://compassionflow.comSupport Rahma with Rose so I can keep producing more episodes here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2197727/supporters/new Music credits: Vocals: Zeynep Dilara Aslan; Ney/drum: Elif Önal; Tanbur: Katherine Hreib; Rebap: Hatice Gülbahar Hepsev

Imagine identifying your parent for a crime, knowing that what you disclose will send your only parent to prison. Imagine moving 11x by the time you were in the 5th grade. And imagine being the child of a parent who, for most of your childhood, was struggling with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Kyira was no stranger to chaos and uneasiness. She was the only child of a parent who turned to substances to cope with her mental health challenges and, in many ways, was the adult in the relationship. Perhaps to compensate for her shortcomings, her mother had no boundaries in her parenting, and Kyira pretty much dictated many decisions that had to be made; from which bedroom she got to have in a new place to if a man would get a second date with her mom, the buck stopped with Kyira. What you may think would lead to entitlement instead laid the foundation for Kyira to be a high-performing, academically thriving student who would develop an eating disorder for eight years. There are many twists and turns in Kyira's story. And what's most fascinating about Kyira's story is how she managed to go from being collateral damage to rising from the ashes of the adversity she experienced in her life. In Episode 32, we re joined by Kyira Wackett, who grew up as a parentified child, believing her job was to make sure everything was always taken care of and under control. Growing up this way, she became the ultimate people pleaser. All of this was a cry for help, which she only heard after falling prey to eating disorders, mental illness, anxiety, and shame. Living in a constant state of burnout was normal and even celebrated. Feeling disconnected from the world around her and the people she was surrounded by from day to day. Multitasking became a great distraction from the distress her mind was really in, which kept the fires of burnout burning. Relationships became the barometer of her heart and mind. Recognizing that she was missing opportunities to just be present in the relationships that mattered to her personally and professionally, she started asking questions that changed her way of thinking. Are you doing what you do because you HAVE to or because you WANT to? Kyira Wackett is a licensed mental health therapist, facilitator and creator. She lives in Portland, OR with her husband, Jordan and her daughter, Everly. She is the owner of Adversity Rising where she equips people with the confidence and skills to write their own story. She also sees patients in a private therapy practice treating eating disorders, anxiety disorders and trauma. She has been speaking on topics related to mental health and well-being for over 10 years and focuses on balancing insight and action to create meaningful and sustainable change. Nobody tells you about menopause. Yet more than one billion women around the world are going through this life transition right now. Given this statistic, you might think that we'd be able to talk openly about menopause. But this normal part of women's lives is still stigmatized. Much of this comes from shame around menstruation and ageing. That natural processes are disgusting and the belief that once women lose their fertility and youth, they must be dried up, devoid of sexual attraction or vitality and valueless to society. This week on the podcast I am joined by licensed mental health therapist Kyira Wackett to go deep into shame. We talk aboutWhat is shame? How it has been developed? The role of shame resiliencyThe impact that shame has on our thoughts, actions, connections and feelings. Why is it so hard to talk about? What can we do about it?It's time to end the shame around menopauseWhat people going through menopause really need is to eliminate the stigma around this stage of life so it can be discussed openly and taken seriously. You can connect with Kyira and download some free resources from Kyira to start your own journey of ending shameWebsite: www.adversityrising.comJoin Email List: www.adversityrising.com/email-list Thought Record Handout https://bit.ly/34I4cjqVideo on Shame: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtL9Q7cf-v0&tVideo on Radical Acceptance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdslLgx1Qn4&tSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/thriving-thru-menopause/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
