“My love, God is here when you choose goodness and are living from your heart. When you follow the path of love, God is with you from the start. And God is there when you mess up, if you make a choice that isn't best. It  doesn't mean you're bad; it just means you're human-like all the rest.” (an excerpt from My Love, God is Everywhere)Victoria Robb Powers and Cameron Vickrey, also known as the Reverend Mamas, are our guests this week on the podcast.  Victoria is the Senior Pastor at Royal Lane Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, and is the first female to pastor a Baptist church in the DFW Metroplex. She is a graduate of Baylor University and Brite Divinity School at TCU in Fort Worth. Victoria lives with her husband and three children in Lake Highlands. She loves to read, write, preach and teach.Cameron  is a graduate of Furman University and Wake Forest University School of Divinity. She currently works for Fellowship Southwest, sharing stories of ministry and mission along the US--Mexico border and advocating for migrants. She is also passionate about public education, and co-founded a nonprofit called RootEd, galvanizing parents of public school children to tell their stories and become advocates. Cameron lives in San Antonio with her family. Her free time is spent with her kids; wishing she were a gardener; teaching Sunday school to middle schoolers, and reading lots of books. On this episode, our conversation leads us to the deep questions of life and especially from kids about who God is and where God is and when God is.  We chat about subjects from soap operas and healthy theology to original sin vs original blessing to how reparenting ourselves while we parent our own kids is deeply healing.Their children's book, My Love, God is Everywhere, is a new favorite of ours and both Lizz and Esther have experienced its healing nature for us as grown ups (I think they both use it devotionally) and also the beautiful message it has for our kids.At one point in the episode, which you have to listen to find out, both Lizz and Esther had their pens out frantically writing something down that changed their perspectives forever. If you want to make room for your own child-like soul to breathe and heal, this is a must-listen to episode. Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We have a very special guest today who has been a part of some very impressive playoff runs in recent years. He is now the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at Tomball High School - welcome Dave Handal to the show! - Coach describes the pride of growing up in Lake Highlands, TX, the rivalry with the legendary Plano Wildcats, and the 5 Lake Highlands alums who are currently Head Coaches at premier football programs. - After graduating from Texas A&M where he was a self-proclaimed Intramural All-American, Dave earned an internship that soured him to "America's Team" and led him to embark on a successful career in coaching!! - It was during his time as Head Coach at Galena Park that Dave and Coach Kovo sparked up a friendship over working together to try to overcome similar challenges. After a great time at Galena Park, Coach moved on to become Defensive Coordinator at Tomball HS where he got to be a part of an amazing State Semifinal run that no one outside that Fieldhouse saw coming - made even more sweet by getting to share it with his youngest son who was the starting Middle Linebacker. - Coach shares some gems about how he learned to get past the mindset that your worth as a coach is defined solely by that score on the scoreboard, plus as a noted funny guy Coach Handal holds court by sharing some great stories of the funny encounters that seem to follow him, including coaching future 3x All-American Gonzaga Basketball Player Drew Timme as a kindergartner! - Finally as the consummate Texas Rangers fan we get Coach Handal's all-time Ranger Mount Rushmore, along with a fun Mavs Start-Bench-Cut with legendary names like Nowitzki, Doncic, and Nash! This recording was collected inside an ice cave in the Medicine Lake Highlands, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. The cave itself is a lava tube which collects cold air during the winter, and as snowmelt and rain seep through the lava above, it freezes inside the lava tube which preserves the cold within throughout the year. You may need to turn the volume up for this recording. As you might imagine, the sound of the dripping water inside the cave is not terribly loud, and I didn't want to turn up the gain too much on the recorder because it would have sounded artificial. Of course, they won't accept it, because that's just the way they are!    Support the show: http://www.wbap.com/chris-krok/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

OBBM CEO Susan Hamilton talks with Host Lynn Daveport about the connection between public education and our businesses. Lynn is running for Dallas College Board District 1, and plans to bring fiscal responsibility and contract transparency to the constituents over a large portion of Dallas County. Listen to learn how this line item on your property tax bill is calculated and what that means for you. Early voting starts April 25th and voting day is May 7th, so get informed and get involved! Go to DallasCountyVotes.org to get a better understanding of your ballot.  Community College isn't just a financial discussion, though that's a large portion. Academic excellence has suffered, and our businesses feel it. The current faculty and long-term employees are concerned with the current direction, should we be listening?  Taxpayers own and financially support the Dallas College institution, and the board works for them, though they appear to have forgotten.  Hear from a former faculty member as he speaks to the board. What is the real story and the real impact of early college high school? Is maturity level a concern? Parents love the idea of college credit, but often it comes with a great deal of remedial courses that can cause significant burn out for the student before they ever get to follow their degree plan.  Lynn points out that reading comprehension and the ability to organize thoughts are critical components to a successful college pathway. Partnerships between college and local ISDs are blurring the lines, and as an education advocate and researcher, she's got legitimate questions and concerns about this arrangement. District 1 covers portions of Lake Highlands, Richardson, Addison, and Preston Hollow - a large area. Lynn brings a unique understanding of the K-12 space and unemployed people. She knows the difference between workforce training and education. 1.1 billion dollars allocated in 2018 needs scrutiny and oversight, and Lynn is ready to challenge the system to ensure constituents and students get the benefit of transparency and stewardship of those funds. This is a word-of-mouth campaign, and Lynn Davenport is determined to cause awareness of the issues that concern our neighborhoods to our detriment. The combination of Gene Robinson running for District 2 and Lynn Davenport in District 1 will be a powerful team with the heart, knowledge and ability to dig deep and solve problems.  Social Impact Podcast is on Spotify! I'm thinking about them as husbands. I'm not just thinking about them as my kids with some obligation I have to mention Jesus as we put them to bed. But I'm trying to grow men." 9:22 - Choosing scriptures for his kids. "Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like a man and be strong and let everything you do be done in love.".... "Be strong, show yourself a man, keep the charge of the Lord, your God, walk in his ways and statutes." ...."He's told you, O man, what's good and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love, kindness and walk humbly with your God." 11:50 -  "I believe is that there's a countercultural nature to the way Christians are called to parent, to lead, to live, and that's that we are not of the world, even though we're in the world, it's that we will be hated because Jesus is hated." 12:20 - I want them to stand by what they believe, regardless of what the world would say about it or how small the minority of people is who believe that." 13:05 - "Do Griffins follow the crowd? And my sons will say that to me only if the crowd is following Jesus." 14:12 - Book: Family Discipleship and the idea of being "dads who take the lead."  16:22 - "If when you think about leading your wife or you think about leading your kids, you're thinking about how can I lay down the gifts God has given me of strength or wisdom or insight or of time in order to meet the needs of those people that the Lord has me living with right now? And so leadership, to me, it has to be servant-hearted and it has to be service-oriented because that's the way we see Jesus lead and that's what he's called us to do." 17:22 - Family discipleship - Critically important, but mostly ordinary. 18:38 -  "So what they need from you, dads, is a demonstration of what it looks like to be an imperfect person who follows a perfect God. They don't need you to be their savior. They have that in Jesus Christ. But what they what you can serve is an example of like, well, here's how dad makes mistakes and repents. Here's how dad tries and fails. Here's how dad tries and succeeds." 20:45 - Modeling, Time, Moments, Milestones - the framework for discipleship 22:32 - "And it's in those significant times where it's going to be memorable that we have the opportunity to point to God's faithfulness, no matter what the circumstances, and to create something bigger." 23:55 - I really believe in the concept of family discipleship that we help you walk through. What is modeling look like in your house? When are you going to do family discipleship time? What language can you use in your household around moments? And then what's your plan for milestones? What do you want to build towards or when you want to be doing? 27:51 - Quote from Charles Spurgeon, "we sow, we reap... Let us expect our children to know the Lord. Let us from the beginning, mingle the name of Jesus with their ABCs."  - making family discipleship as important as education. 30:43 - Quote from Charles Spurgeon - "Aspire, dear brethren, to shine widely as a candle set upon a candle stick gives light to all that are in the house. First see to it that you are truly saved yourselves. Then cry out, cry to the Lord for your own kith and kin and labor for them until they are brought to the redeemers feet and then let your light shine throughout the neighborhoods where you dwell. It is. It is a poor lamp which cannot be seen outside its own glass." 34:59 - Deut 6 - Be diligent in impressing these things to our children. Betzen tells us what he believes is at stake for both Lake Highlands and Dallas as a whole, explains why bacon strips make bad council districts, and poses the question of whether Lake Highlands is a good or bad community of interest.
