The 6 Second Trick That Wins Every Negotiation: FBI's Hostage Negotiator || Chris Voss

TruthWorks

Chris Voss is the former lead international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI. For seven years, his job was to talk people out of the worst decisions of their lives. He's the reason a bank robber walked out of a Manhattan branch after an eight-hour standoff and surrendered to him personally on the sidewalk. A teammate named Jamie Sedania passed Chris two notes at critical moments. Those two notes ended the standoff. But Chris didn't start there. He grew up in a small town in Iowa, the son of an entrepreneur who put every kid to work the moment they could carry trash. He joined the Kansas City police, then the FBI, then the New York Joint Terrorist Task Force. He applied for the hostage negotiation team and got rejected. The woman in charge told him to go volunteer on a suicide hotline first. He did. That decision changed everything, because tactical empathy doesn't get built in simulation rooms. It gets built in conversations where the stakes are someone's life.Today Chris is the founder of the Black Swan Group, named after Nassim Taleb's book on the impact of the highly improbable. He's the author of Never Split The Difference, a book that has sold millions of copies and still ranks #1 in negotiation a decade after release. In this episode of Truth Works, he sits down with Jessica Neal and Peter Clark to unpack how the skills that brought hostages home alive close million-dollar deals, win raises, and transform hiring conversations. This is not a tactics episode. It's a conversation about what happens inside the human brain when someone feels heard, and why coachability is the rarest and most expensive trait in any room. What you'll learn:The 6 second silence rule that triggers oxytocin and serotonin, and why most people destroy it by speaking too soonWhy "negotiate your career, not your salary" is the only raise strategy that actually works, and the exact opening line to use with your bossThe 3 negotiator types (assertive, analyst, accommodator) and how the same silence lands differently with eachHow to spot when you're the fool in the game (20% of the time, you are)Why Stephen Covey got "seek first to understand" wrong, and the small correction Chris makesThe tactical empathy framework, why it was rebranded from plain "empathy," and the neuroscience underneath itThe single observation Chris makes at the grocery store that turns a produce clerk into a personal tour guideThe Robert Greene charmer principle that explains why some people make you feel like the most interesting person in the roomWhy coachability is the rarest trait in any room, and the man on a plane who proved it in 10 secondsThe bank robbery story, the swap negotiator tactic, and the two notes that ended an eight-hour standoffThe 22 second silence Elon Musk held with Lex Fridman, and what came out the other sideLearn more about Chris, his Professional Dealmaker Day on May 15th, and his upcoming salary negotiation course at blackswanltd.com.Truth Works is hosted by Jessica Neal, former Chief Talent Officer at Netflix. The top AI news from the past week, every ThursdAI

Hey yall, Alex here (with a scheduled post) I'm taking this week off to get married and celebrate life with family, and touch some grass, but wanted to share the awesome chats I had with some great folks at AI Engineer Europe last week. BTW - Yam and Ryan took over the live show today, if you didn't happen to catch that, please check out the live on our youtube channel! Ok, now to the actual content. The best thing about the AI Engineer conferences for me is the people I meet. I often have a chance to bring them to the live show (in fact, the live show we recorded there had the most guests yet on an episode! 4 guests including Swyx, Omar Sanseviero, VB from OpenAI and Peter Gostev) But often times I also have an offline chat. I find these conversation to be less about the weeks news, and more about the state of AI Engineering, and the guests themselves. Not quite Lex Friedman pod level, but a different vibe from our live shows. Sunil Pai - Cloudflare (@threepointone)The first conversation in today's pod is with Sunil Pai, Principle Engineer at Cloudflare. Long time followers of ThursdAI know that I love Cloudflare, they gave me my first big break when I was building Targum (which still runs on Workers), so I had a great time chatting with Sunil! This guy has had several lives. React.js core team at Meta (he self-deprecates — "I'm the one nobody talks about, there's a testing API I shipped that pisses people off"). Then did developer tooling and the CLI at Cloudflare the first time. Left to found PartyKit — open-source deployment platform for real-time multiplayer apps and AI agents, built on Cloudflare Durable Objects. Backed by Sequoia. Acquired by Cloudflare in 2024, and he came back as a Principal Systems Engineer (per his bio: "Worked at Cloudflare once, left and created PartyKit, came back wiser"). Also plays guitar (Les Pauls — it's all over his blog). Co-hosts a live show called Dry Run on Cloudflare TV with Craig Dennis. Our conversation was a very fun one, ranging from Cloudflare agentic offerings, to how engineers should think about writing/reading code in 2026. I had a great time chatting with Sunil and I hope you enjoy getting to know him!Sally Ann O'Malley - RedhatThen I had the pleasure of chatting with Sally, who's a Principal Engineer at Redhat and contributor to OpenClaw. Sally has one of the more unusual paths in the speaker lineup. Started as a schoolteacher, did a stint at Trader Joe's, then moved to Westford, MA, discovered Red Hat's HQ across the street, and went back to school for a second bachelor's in software engineering at UMass Lowell. Joined Red Hat in 2015, has been there a decade. Worked across OpenShift teams, integrating Kubernetes and Podman into the platform. Recent projects span Image Based Operating Systems, Podman, OpenTelemetry, and Sigstore. Also an instructor at Boston University's Faculty of Computing and Data Sciences and an organizer for DevConf.US. Won the 2025 Paul Cormier Trailblazer Award at Red Hat. Currently a founding contributor on the llm-d project — distributed, scalable, high-performance AI inferencing built on K8s. Heavily involved in Red Hat's InstructLab collaboration with IBM (the small-model distillation system using IBM Granite + Llama).Sally and I had a great conversation, two high energy personalities met! We geeked out about our OpenClaw agents, securing your Clankers, how it is to maintain OpenClaw, and everything in between! She was so stressed about the recording, but dare I say, this was one of the more natural guests I had on the show! I hope you enjoyed this format, please let me know if the comments, and I'll see you next week! — Alex This is a public episode. In this episode, Ben reacts to Lex Fridman's interview with Jeff Kaplan (former Overwatch Director) as they break down the "multifaceted failure" of Blizzard's Project Titan . So, in a world where Jeff Kaplan gives his five and a half hour interview to Lex Friedman charting the course of those early days, and Jason Shrier published a book called Play Nice all about those backroom politics, the question becomes: What do two people living and breathing in these worlds think of all that? Gregor brings a rare combination of deep technical expertise and sharp strategic thinking to one of the most pressing questions facing leaders today: Are you truly ready for what AI is about to demand of you?Together, Sabine and Gregor challenge some of the most dangerous myths and biases that are keeping executives passive in the face of exponential change. From the status quo bias and optimism bias to confirmation bias – they name what's getting in the way, and make a case for why traditional three-to-five-year strategies are no longer fit for purpose. The conversation takes a turn toward scenario thinking, anti-fragility, and what it means to lead organizations that don't just survive uncertainty, but are built to benefit from it.Whether you're just starting your AI journey or rethinking your entire organizational model, this episode's for you.Our Guesthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/gsieber/https://www.postdigitalleader.blog/ShownotesDavos Conversation about AGIAI Sources – Recommendations by GregorGregor Sieber suggests following these blogs and people for AI insights. Conectas OpenClaw a Telegram. 2.

In this episode of All Things Sustainable, we're exploring the role that private markets play in global supply chains.   We speak to Alex Friedman, Co-Founder and CEO of Novata, a sustainability data management platform for the private markets that partners with S&P Global.   In the interview, Alex explains the significance of small and medium-sized private companies in global supply chains — and why high-quality private markets data is important for understanding supply chain risks.  "Big public companies have been the ones that have been in the focus when it comes to sustainability," Alex says. "Yet a big public company can't figure out its overall sustainability footprint and how to improve things if they can't get their arms around their supply chain."  We also explore how private markets will evolve in 2026 in the face of advances in AI technology and a fragmented regulatory landscape.   "It's a multispeed story at the regulatory level," Alex says. "But big companies ... they work in so many jurisdictions that they have to collect information when it comes to sustainability. They have to make sense of it and you have to report on it. So that's not changing."  S&P Global is part of the consortium of organizations that supported Novata upon its launch in 2021.  Read S&P Global's Top 10 Sustainability Trends to Watch in 2026  Register for an S&P Global webinar about sustainability trends to watch on Jan. 29: Sustainability Nexus: S&P Global's Top 10 Sustainability Trends to Watch in 2026   Copyright ©2026 by S&P Global  DISCLAIMER       By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. Ever wonder what happened to The Oneders? We celebrate Hanksgiving by discussing Tom Hanks’s love letter to ’60s pop that’s also a clear-eyed look at the machinery of the entertainment business, “That Thing You Do!” Powered by a legitimately classic pop song, a stunning cast (turns out, Tom Hanks knows some people), and scenes of joy, warmth, and kidness, this is a film that we find ourselves revisiting often. Happy Hanksgiving to all! And make it snappy! Jason Snell with Erika Ensign, Lex Friedman, Brian Warren, Kathy Campbell and Dan Moren.
