Mary Davis, CEO of Special Olympics, wants the people she represents to “have a seat at the table” as AI evolves. In this episode of the Me, Myself, and AI podcast, Davis talks about her organization's mission along with the growing role of AI and how it's crucial to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities — a group often overlooked in tech discussions — are included in AI development. Special Olympics helps people with intellectual disabilities through sports, education, and leadership programs. Its Unified Champion Schools program is an inclusive education initiative that benefits all students, both those with and without intellectual disabilities, reduces bullying, and improves academic performance. Mary also shares the results of a study conducted by the Special Olympics and Harvard University citing strong support from parents, teachers, and the athletes themselves to use AI to support people with intellectual disabilities, especially in educational contexts. She sees AI as a powerful tool for “leveling the playing field” and describes specific applications that the Special Olympics is using for employees and athletes. Read the episode transcript here. Guest bio: Mary Davis has been the CEO of Special Olympics since 2016. She joined the nonprofit organization soon after college as a volunteer and coach in her native Ireland. She progressed through various leadership roles before becoming its global CEO: She was CEO of the Special Olympics World Summer Games Dublin 2003, the first such event held outside the United States; CEO of Special Olympics Ireland; and president and managing director of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia. Davis was awarded a Person of the Year Award for her work on the 2003 World Summer Games and her years of service with Special Olympics Ireland. J.C. Ryle's works have long inspired Christians with timeless truths and profound insights into the Christian faith. But as language and culture evolve, even the most powerful words can feel somewhat inaccessible. How can we bring Ryle's teachings to life for a new generation, eager for guidance but sometimes struggling to connect with the language of older saints? In today's episode, Jonathan is joined by Mary Davis and Andrew Atherstone to discuss Ryle's legacy and lasting importance. They explore how Ryle's wisdom on discipleship, holiness, and devotion continues to resonate deeply and how a fresh modernization can serve as a bridge to introduce his unique theological contributions to a new generation of believers. If you enjoyed this episode be sure to leave us a review on wherever you listen! With the update on the Amy Mihaljevic case this week, I thought I'd look for a cold case from her era that has been solved. I landed on the case of the cold case of Mary Davis, a mystery that lingered for decades and has finally been solved. In a remarkable display of the enduring power of forensic science, advancements in DNA technology have led to the identification of Russell Grant Wood as the perpetrator in the tragic demise of Mary Davis. The evidence, submitted to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in 2022, brought closure to a case that had remained unresolved since 1987. Unfortunately, Wood passed away in 2013, but this breakthrough is a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and the importance of technological progress in solving crimes. ................................. FULL TRANSCRIPT ................................. Hi, it's Pascale. I wish you a Merry, Merry, Merry Christmas this year with your loved ones, family and friends! I am so grateful to you, my listeners. Thank you for taking the time every week to discover how to create more balance and harmony in your life. It's a triple merry this year because I know that times are changing, and change is not always easy to handle straightforwardly. My wish for you is to keep uplifting your spirit despite the circumstances. Welcome to episode 226 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. This is Week 5 of The Gratitude Experiment. How did you get on with week 4 high-value action steps? Let me remind you what they were: 1. Express gratitude to awaken the joy in your heart. 2. Reconnect with what brings you the greatest joy. 3. Be content and mindful of the present moment. In this episode, I want to commemorate someone special. A dear friend, Asa. He is no longer with us. May you rest in peace, dear Asa. Asa loved photography and was a fantastic observer of the beauty in nature. He could capture the moment so well. Additionally, Asa could see the beauty in nature in a way we usually do not look at things because it is so detailed and in places we never think of. His photos always touched my heart. Looking back, he reminded us to have a much closer look at the beauty that surrounds us. Thank you, Asa! Mary Davis said: “The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see.” Your high-value action step to uplift your spirit this week is to be an observer. I want you to see, absorb, appreciate and be grateful for the beauty that surrounds you. Remember that when you say Yes! to love, you say Yes! to life. Again Have a merry merry merry Christmas! I look forward to connecting with you next Monday. Here is Mary Davis' quote again: “The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see.” Have a beautiful week of gratitude and appreciation, take care and lots of love. ………………………. FREE RESOURCES ………………………. After Aurora's Tiktok video about the disappearance of Mary Johnson, Mary's best friend Kari reached out to share some more information about her situation. Mary has been missing for just over a year, and there are few clues about what could have happened to her. However, Mary's tumultuous relationship with her husband seems like it may have been a factor. Mary is also indigenous, and her case has not received the attention it deserves from law enforcement and the media. Mary Johnson (also known as Mary Davis) was last seen almost one year ago, on November 25th of 2020. Since that date, very little information is known as what what happened to her. Last seen walking with a man en route to a friend's house, Mary never made it there. Mary's case captures an example of the lack of information and coverage on the cases of murdered and missing Indigenous women. She is one of thousands. Her case remained unsolved. He was 16 hours in. His feet ached of blisters, cuts, and bruises. His whole body was exhausted, screaming at him to stop. He had swum 2.4 miles, cycled 112 miles, and was now on his way to completing the final stage of his journey, a 26.2-mile run. Every step brought him closer to his goal, and every step forward meant ignoring the creeping self-doubt in his mind. 16 hours, 46 minutes, and 9 seconds after he began his journey, the hard work and pain paid off… He heard his name announced over the speaker as he crossed the finish line… “Chris Nikic, you are an Ironman.” On November 7th, 2020, Chris Nikic completed his first Ironman. It's an incredible feat for anyone to accomplish, but there's something about Chris's story that makes it that much more impressive — Chris was the first athlete with Down Syndrome ever to complete an Ironman. It's a powerful story that Mary Davis, the CEO of Special Olympics, tells to illustrate how the organization is trying to create an inclusion revolution. What does that mean? Find out on f Business X factors. Main Takeaways: Inclusion Revolution: Being inclusive to people with disabilities is not only the right thing to do, it is also good for business. According to the Harvard Business Review, inclusion directly enhances the workplace, and teams with inclusive leaders are 17% more likely to report high performance. It has also been found to increase work attendance by almost one day a year per employee, which reduces the cost of absenteeism. The traits that distinguish inclusive leaders from others are humility, awareness of bias, curiosity about others, cultural intelligence, visible commitment to diversity, and effective collaboration. Get Hyperlocal: It does not matter whether you are an organization that is trying to improve the world for disabled people, an awareness campaign about the environment or a business you are trying to grow, a bottoms-up instead of a top-down approach builds trust. Knowledge of local cultures can help to foster an understanding of an international agenda or an appetite for brands. It also means that big brands should change their offerings on a local level to adjust to the tastes of different cultures. Getting hyperlocal means understanding what truly matters to customers in any given location and adjusting marketing to locals tastes and preferences. Become a Storydoer: Storytelling is a powerful tool for any organization or business. In the case of non-profit organizations, it is often not hard to find stories about the great work that is being done. What is more important is to not only share the outcome-oriented stories, but to share the action that produces those results. Storydoing should mobilize people to actively support and promote a cause, or, in the case of a business, to actively promote a brand. Customers should feel they are not only buying or supporting a product, but they are also getting a story that draws them in to move beyond a product. How to Manage Public-Private Partnerships: Contracts between government and business or private organizations can be enormously complex, but they can accomplish what neither side can do alone, like expanding infrastructure where funds are limited or provide much-needed help for non-profit organizations. The process of structuring a PPP involving a large number of people often takes many years. To avoid failure, find a government champion, draw in people with expertise and take note of environmental and social considerations.---Business X factors is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by Hyland. For over a decade, Hyland has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms, leading the way to help people get the information they need when and where they need it. More than half of 2019 Fortune 100 companies rely on Hyland to help them create more meaningful connections with the people they serve. When your focus is on the people you serve, Hyland stands behind you. Hyland is your X factor for better performance. Go to Hyland.com/insights to learn more.

A few years ago, Mary Davis and her husband Ari suffered the loss of their first baby to a miscarriage. To help them both process, Mary and Ari decided to give back to people in need by volunteering on Skid Row. They were surprised to see so many children living in homelessness there and it broke their hearts. Mary had an idea -- since they weren’t able to give their own child a birthday party, maybe they could throw one for these children. With the help of a local outreach organization, they not only made a birthday party happen, but they’ve thrown one every single month since.

Everyone should know they're special, especially when it's their birthday. Mary Davis started Worthy of Love, a nonprofit that celebrates the birthdays of the children impacted by homelessness and sheltered by Union Rescue Mission on Skid Row, in downtown Los Angeles. Each month, Mary and her husband Ari, and their team of volunteers, create an amazing roof top party, where every child has a fun and memorable night. Mary's hope is to create positive memories for these kids, and to remind them that they’re important and matter. And these parties are not just cake and streamers. They include gifts for every child, a lovable character named Skiddy Cat, a DJ, dancing, face painting, and more. Sometimes, even a Hollywood celebrity like Jaden Smith will stop by and help to spread the joy. I met Mary, or better known as Sista Mary to many, at her home on the westside of LA. We talked about her organization and how it helps, how the idea started from a very personal experience, learning more about homelessness, and even about her time with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. As Mary shared with me, if we all do just a little bit, together we can make a much bigger difference. And just think, a simple birthday celebration can mean so much to these kids. I’m so thankful to help share Mary’s story, and to spread this message of love. Also, Mary and Ari are some of the nicest and most giving people I’ve met. College of Law Research: Mary Davis by Research Communications
This on demand audio series is a part of the Executive Girlfriends Group Vignette Series. Chicke Fitzgerald interviews Jill Flynn & Mary Davis Holt The original live interview was 8/31/12. Women hold just 11 percent of the most senior-level leadership positions in U.S. Corporations—a number that hasn't changed in over 30 years. How can women break through? Break Your Own Rules distills the six faulty assumptions (or "rules") most women follow that get in the way—then delivers the correlating new rules that promise to clear that path. For example, the old rule of "Focus on Others" must be replaced by "Take Center Stage," "Hard Work Will Get You There" must yield to "Be Politically Savvy." "Play It Safe" must give way to "Play to Win." "Ask Permission" must be replaced by "Proceed Until Apprehended." This hands-on guide is for women who are ready to transform their assumptions and join the senior ranks of American business. Jill Flynn, M. Ed., is founding partner at Flynn Heath Holt Leadership (FHHL) whose goal is to move women and organizations forward, faster. Mary Davis Holt is a partner at Flynn Heath Holt Leadership (FHHL), an executive coach and keynote speaker on business, women, and leadership. Co-author, Kathryn Heath (not interviewed) is managing Partner of Flynn Heath Holt.
