Whether it's running through a piece in your head to see if it's memorized, or imagining different fingering options while taking a practice break, you've probably used mental imagery to supplement your physical practice at one point or another.Research in this area suggests that mental practice can indeed enhance learning and performance beyond physical practice alone, but how do we know if we're doing it right?A 2015 study (Debarnot et al.) identified two things that boosted the effectiveness of participants' mental practice pretty substantially. And it wasn't anything crazy that would require much time or effort. Just a couple simple tweaks that you could use to level up your mental practice this week.Get all the nerdy details here: How to Make Mental Practice Even More Effective====Why do things sound better at home than they do on stage? If you've been confused (and frustrated) by the inconsistency of your performances, I put together a FREE 4-minute quiz called the Mental Skills Audit, which will help you pinpoint your mental strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what exactly to adjust and tweak in your preparation for more consistently optimal performances. You can take the Mental Skills Audit online at bulletproofmusician.com/msa. Optimizing the Benefits of Mental Practice on Motor Acquisition and Consolidation with Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.12.516269v1?rss=1 Authors: Rannaud Monany, D., Lebon, F., Papaxanthis, C. Abstract: The optimization of mental practice (MP) protocols matters for sport and motor rehabilitation. In this study, we were interested in the benefits of aerobic exercise in MP, given its positive effects on the acquisition and consolidation of motor skills induced by physical practice (PP). Four experimental groups were tested: i) physical practice without exercise (PP-Rest), ii) mental practice without exercise (MP-Rest), iii) mental practice preceded by Exercise (Exe-MP), and iv) mental practice followed by Exercise (MP-Exe). We hypothesized that exercise before MP would potentiate motor acquisition, whereas exercise after MP would further promote motor consolidation. Motor performance (movement speed and accuracy) was measured during a sequential finger tapping task before (Pre-Test), immediately after (Post-Test 0h, acquisition), and one day after practice (Post-Test 24h, consolidation). Results suggest that exercise before MP did not additionally improve motor acquisition in comparison to the MP-Rest group. Interestingly, aerobic exercise after MP further increased performance during motor consolidation, at the level of the PP-Rest group. This novel finding represents a promising advance in the optimization of mental practice protocols in sport-related and rehabilitation settings. Copy rights belong to original authors. Most musicians (and athletes) have heard of mental practice, and have probably been encouraged to do it. But have you ever been taught *how* to do mental practice? Most research centers on whether mental practice works, or what type is best, but today's study looks at a strategy for learning how to do mental practice. And it describes a technique for how to get better at mental practice - and see changes in performance - even if you've never been very good at imagery in the past. "I've driven races where my power steering has gone out and the diver cooling system went out and it's 130 degrees, and if you did that for about five minutes, you'd say I gotta quit. But I had to do it for an hour. And the only way to get through it is just keep taking breaths and focusing on, 'What's the next step? What's the next step? What's the next step?'"Today's guest is Matt Plumb, a professional race car driver. If I asked you about car racing, you'd probably mention your favorite scene from Ford versus Ferrari with Matt Damon and Christian Bale or Days of Thunder Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Other than what we see in movies, most people don't know a whole lot about the sport of car racing and what it takes to be a successful professional driver. As sports nerds, Bryan and I were treated to an inside look, not only into the sport of car racing, but more importantly, the mind of a professional race car driver. Car racing is about so much more than driving fast and trying not to crash. In fact, everything we talked during our conversation with Matt felt completely relatable, even though our background is in a completely different sport. We discovered so many parallels between race car drivers and runners that at times, it felt like we were talking about the same sport. Matt highlights his story with insight into what makes up his winning mindset, including why not quitting is quite possibly the biggest motivator that got him through his toughest moments. There's no mistaking how relevant the lessons Matt has learned from twenty years of racing are to all of us. We really believe this conversation will inspire you to be ‘all in' when it comes to going after what you want in life.Show Notes(4:11) Where is he and what his season looks like…(5:18) Simple questions from a novice and racing basics explained…(9:27) It's a brother thing. His follow along body weight movement videos are so much more than fitness videos as he combines strength, stability and mobility with personal development and inner work to enrich the mind, body and soul and sustain being well. "When you only focus on how you look in the mirror and how much weight you can lift... You put yourself in a never ending loop of feeling not good enough. The weights make you stiff, your ego makes you stiffer... THIS is what we've been sold on." Our cultures norms surrounding fitness, movement and strength are slightly paradoxical, we train our bodies to become better at specific training and exercises but not necessarily aiming towards being better stronger functional humans. Josh's approach to movement and life is crucial to why I had to talk to him and share stories, ideas and philosophies. We tap into Josh's ethos and artistic side which compliments his drive to increasingly provide valuable content and be of service to his community and allow people to take control of their on idea of fitness and wellbeing. It’s time to poke the bear!  In this, the first of a two-part series, Dr. J and Gregory take a critical look at functional training.  They’ll evaluate some of the conventional thinking around the “F” word, turn it upside down and inside out, and present some enlightening research that’ll really make you reconsider your assumptions.  Finally, they’ll redefine what it really means to train functionally. Join Fitness for Consumption in part one of this episode in which they stir up some real controversy.  We explore the emergence of functional training in the fitness world and examine some of the claims and theories of modern day proponents.  Are many of the accepted beliefs regarding functional training supported by credible, empirical science?  Or, do they germinate from the whims and unsubstantiated theories of many current fitness gurus?  To answer this, they dive deep into some research that begins to cast doubt on some of those theories.   Dr. Juris shares some of his real-life experiences encountering functional training, and together, we offer a new definition that may change your approach to training functionally. In this week's episode, we welcome Alan Jaeger from Jaeger Sports back into the studio to open up a moving dialogue on the importance of bringing Mental Practice into your practice plans and into the culture in our program. Jaeger has mentioned countless times on social media “you become what you practice” and he is calling for coaches to bring this element of training to their players to better prepare them for the demands of the game. We cover a cornucopia of topics and ideas while taking questions directly from our listenership and delivering them to Jaeger over the airwaves. Questions range from the practice of meditation and breathing to the details of visualization and how to guide players through the uncovering of their own process. The most prominent point made throughout this show is that we do not need to have our Master's Degree in Sports Psychology to implement this into our practice plan.
