That's 82 million workers who earn an hourly wage for their service— and 82 million workers who are too often left time poor, without the training and development resources so often afforded only to management and salaried employees. So today, Sam was joined by Mathieu Stevenson, the CEO of Snagajob, the country's largest marketplace for hourly jobs and shifts. They connect millions of job seekers each month to right-fit-employment opportunities across the US. Their mission? To empower hourly workers with the ability to design the way they work– not just for full-time or part-time, but also for flexible and gig workers. Together they discuss the jobs report, what they're seeing from a workforce trend perspective, and reflect on what lies ahead in a post-covid world, where the Future of Work is rapidly shifting. With that, let's bring it in!

Peter Merholz demystifies design leadership, openly shares the ups and downs of a trail-blazing design career, and how we can keep design “weird” without getting fired. Highlights include: ⭐ What is the fundamental job of the designer leader? ⭐ Why do design leaders find it difficult to figure out what their job is? ⭐ What advice did Obi Wan give Luke that design leaders need to hear? ⭐ Why are you a design pragmatist and not an idealist? ⭐ What do design leaders need to know about politics and relationships? #DesignLeadership #UX #UXDesign #AdaptivePath #BraveUX ====== Who is Peter Merholz? Peter is the Founder and Principal at Humanism at Scale, the consulting practice he started in 2019 to amplify the practices and potential of design teams by shaping design organisations and bolstering design leadership. Before founding Humanism at Scale, Peter was the VP of Design at Snagajob, where he oversaw design for both product and marketing. Peter has also held positions such as Senior Director of Design at Jawbone, VP of Global Design at Groupon and VP of User Experience at Inflection. But it is his role and the almost 11 years he invested as a Co-Founder and the Head of Design Practice of Adaptive Path - then the world's leading UX strategy and UX design firm - that he is perhaps best known for. In 2016, Peter co-authored “Org Design for Design Orgs” with Kristin Skinner, which was the first book to address building and managing effective in-house design teams.  And, last millennia, Peter coined the term blog! ====== Find Peter here: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/petermerholz/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/peterme Website: https://www.petermerholz.com/ Peter's book: Org Design for Design Orgs - Building and Managing In-House Design Teams: https://orgdesignfordesignorgs.com/ ====== Liked what you heard and want to hear more? There's been a remarkable turnaround in the demand for workers compared to the millions laid off during the pandemic. According to Snagajob's most recent hiring report, about “99% of employers reported they are currently hiring,” and “92% do not have the staff they need to operate at full capacity.” This raises the question; is it a worker shortage or case of not paying enough, or are there other issues at play. “Overall jobs are up 61% compared to pre-pandemic norms,” and 101% year over year growth.” The study shows that the labor shortage we face today is “multifaceted.”

It's The Shred – a mini-Chad and Cheese bite of Breaking News — This is Chad Sowash The Shred is brought to you by The Judge Group… What exactly is The Judge Group, well Judge has over 48 years of experience and success in recruiting talent – namely IT and Healthcare talent. If you need Healthcare or IT professionals go to Judge.com and tell them Chad & Cheese sent you — Judge.com — I love that domain On to the NEWS… Pivots can't save everyone… Snag – aka Snagajob – the hourly hiring platform just outsed their CEO Peter Harrison. Why? Well, pull up some Glassdoor reviews and that might start to answer the question of Harrison's kick to the curb. Harrison's 41 percent CEO approval rating – which sucks btw – and most of the negative reviews focus on a lack of leadership – never a good thing for a CEO. Not too mention in 2016 then Snagajob's landscape changed immensely with an infusion of an additional $100m investment, now the cash wasn't the biggest change rather.. that cash shifted control to outside investment firms. Ohhhh NELLY! And also remember Snag's sweetspot is the SMB market and with Zip killing it, LinkedIn licking their chops and Facebook – yea Facebook joining the party it's getting more than competitve at the SMB party! Who will be the new face of Snag? Fabio Rosati of Upwork fame – you know the freelance job site that accrued 14 million users in 180 countries and more than $1 billion in annual billings. Yea that Fabio Rosati… But will Fabio be enough to get the SMB platform through the competition and the new Uber-like hourly start-ups? Who knows but it's gonna to be fun watching… NEXXT >>>>>> Microsoft is going to drink Slack's milkshake — Yes There will be blood Slack a business communication and productivity platform has to defend it's flank from Microsoft Teams a competitor to Slack who has just launched a FREE version. According to Quartz… The new free Microsoft Teams platform is aimed at small and medium-size businesses. It'll be free for an organization's first 300 users, and each user will be given 2 GB of storage, along with 10 GB that the team can share. This news should send Slackers into a panic… Teams is integrated with the Microsoft suite and are targeting Slack. Joel and I always talk about who will acquire Slack… Well, Microsoft isn't in the market to acquire Slack who has $790m in funding, they want to kill them, but what about Google? Who else do you think should be eyeing Slack – let us know on Twitter, just use #chadcheese, on LinkedIn connect and ping us or stop on by the chadcheese.com site and leave us a message. We might just be talking about Snag and Teams v Slack milkshake on the next episode so join the discussion. >>>>>>> Big thanks to Judge for supporting The Shred – The Judge Group People Powered Business Solutions – Judging people since 1970… and if you haven't been Judged and you need Healthcare and IT professionals — what the hell are you waiting for? “Many designers don’t realize the challenges their leader faces.” Peter Merholz is the VP of Design at Snagajob and co-author of “Org Design for Design Orgs”. He previously co-founded Adaptive Path, which is now part of the Capital One Design. In between all of this, Peter was also Funsize’s first client during his time at Groupon. It’s been a couple of years since Peter’s been on the Hustle Podcast and we’re really excited to have him back. On this episode, Anthony and Peter chat about designing design teams, Peter’s new talk “The Four Archetypes of The Complete Design Leader”, design job titles, why Product Management is the new User Experience, and more. More on Peter’s Four Archetypes of Design Leadership: As designers become design leaders, they need to leave behind what made them successful and embrace new approaches to their work. And when they realize just how much there is to do, it can feel overwhelming. In this talk, Peter draws upon 20 years of leading design teams to provide a memorable framework for understanding all aspects of the role. As a Coach, you manage down to get the most out of your team. The Diplomat manages across, developing relationships with functional peers. The Advocate manages up, championing their team's work to executives and other stakeholders. And the Architect figures out the tools and frameworks necessary to support the design organization as it scales. Visit the Funsize website Subscribe to The Funsize Digest

First, According to Forbes Magazine, sharing economy companies are improving the economic fortunes of women around the world. Female Airbnb hosts in Kenya are earning enough to cover one-third of their household costs. Female hosts in India are earning enough to cover over 30% of their household costs. Despite the change in fortunes, women still lag men in launching sharing economy startups. Debbie Wosskow, founder and CEO of Love Home Swap, has launched a Allbright, a unique UK funding platform designed to provide the support and finance needed by female-led businesses to launch and scale. Second, Safr Ride Sharing Service has changed their market approach. Initially, Safr launched as a woman-only ride sharing service -- with women drivers serving only women riders. Safr has modified its approach to all men to both ride and drive for the company. However, Safr does give users the option in its App to select whether they prefer women drivers and/or riders. Third, Snagajob and Husl have both completed market test and are preparing to roll-out their on-demand service for hourly workers that is focused on the restaurant sector. Fourth, Cat-in-a-Flat, the Airbnb of the Cat Sitting space, has begun a full scale roll-out after their soft launch in London, Dublin and Amsterdamn. You will soon be able to use their app to locate a trust cat sitter for your fluffy friend. Fifth, three Chinese Shared-Battery Sharing and/or Smart Device Charging companies announced investments on the same day. According to Six Tone magazine, Xiaodian received a $350 million-Yuan ($50.7 million US) in investments while Hidian and Feichangdian received $100 million Yuan ($14.5 million US) and $3 million Yuan ($435,000 US) respectively. Finally, Up & Go, and Home Cleaning Startup started by cleaning cooperatives Brightly Cleaning, Cooperative Cleaning of New York, and Ecomundo, is fighting the tech giants entering their space. Unlike taxi cab companies, these cooperatives have decided to fight back and use technology to give them the sharing economy benefits and reach more customers. In Episode 6, I presented the Growth Capacity Framework to help business mavericks and entrepreneurs create management capacity. The framework uses two dimensions (Do the tasks differentiate your business and Are the tasks Critical to the Daily Delivery of the Product or Service) to help founders to sort business tasks into four quadrants: CORE COMPETENCY Tasks, Tasks that represent NEW COMPETENCIES, Tasks that should be OUTSOURCED and tasks that founders should seek to REDUCE THE COST. In Episode 7, we use our Mastermind Interview with sales guru, Scott Sullivan of Sullivan & Associates (also known as Synergenic Sales Group), to reflect on the Growth Capacity Framework and to show founders how they can OUTSOURCE Sales and Marketing and unleash explosive growth.
