From "Cardoons" to "Misbeliefs," "Huckabucks" to "Second Lines" – the Big Easy has a lingo all its own, built on generations of immigrants finding their way to the port of New Orleans, the French Quarter, and finally a life in this city. For centuries, Africans, Southeast Asians, Europeans, and Caribbean Islanders have worked to make a home here, resulting in the hodgepodge of culture New Orleans is today. On this week's show, we examine two immigrant groups who loom large in the story of the Crescent City. With begin with historian Justin Nystrom, who discusses the influence that Sicilian Americans have had on our city's foodways. Surprisingly, that influence didn't begin with the heavy influx of Sicilians who populated the city during the late 1880s, but with a first wave of Italian immigrants who arrived on our shores in the 1830s. Then, Liz Williams joins us with memories of her Sicilian grandmother, Nana Elisabetta, who arrived in the Crescent City at the age of 18. Liz's book, "Nana's Creole Italian Table," is filled with recipes and family lore. Finally, we sit down with Tulane History Professor Laura Kelley. Her book, "The Irish in New Orleans," tells the history of Irish immigrants in the Crescent City and how they shaped Louisiana culture in some unexpected ways. Misbeliefs about Private Equity Partnership: Success Stories Revealed! We had the pleasure of hosting Shane Slominski on today's episode, who is a partner with Tonka Bay Private Equity Partners in the Twin Cities. Shane has been in the PE space with Tonka Bay for 18 years, and prior to that was a practicing CPA in the M&A space with Arthur Anderson and Deloitte. During those years, he worked often with PE owned companies and learned a lot about how Private Equity worked, prompting him to seek a role in a firm to get more involved, which is when he found Tonka Bay.Shane says that the world of Private Equity is really growing, and that each one has their own unique set of criteria around ideal acquisition targets. For Tonka Bay,. they're looking for companies with owners who are partners or founders seeking a way to scale the company and take some chips off the table. Shane says that the values and desires for the future of the business are an important aspect of finding a good match for his firm. It was a refreshing thing to hear, since so many owners would deem PE to be a last resort, due to all the bad press its received over the years. But, as Shane said, things have changed and owners have many options in this space, especially if they have well run, profitable companies with growth potential. Some things he recommends that sellers do now to drive the attractiveness of their business are to first, decentralize themselves from their companies. He said that is a big issue for PE (as with any buyer). If you are an owner and looking for a partner to take your business to the next level, consider chatting with Tonka Bay Equity Partners! On our last podcast and post, we talked about the character misbelief, which is basically what the character in your story believes that isn't real or true. The big component of this is that your character believes this big lie about life or about themselves because of something that hurt them in the past. The thing that hurt them in the past that causes that big untruth that dictates their lives is often called a wound. Whew. So much lingo. False belief/big lie Wound/thing that hurt them in the past So, the cool thing is that you can use these false beliefs to make a better story. We talked about those false beliefs in our last podcast, but it could be that they aren't lovable, they are unworthy, that might always makes right. The wound makes this a logical thing for them to think even though it's super wrong. The big trick is that you want to show this to the reader rather than tell them. You can't just write: Carrie cried because she was unlovable, which she knew because Steve Sills told her so at the seventh grade dance. And you can't just write, “I'm only doing this,” Carrie said, “because of what Steven Sills told me at that seventh grade dance.” You want to show these beliefs rather than tell them. Instead, you want to show the reader by how the main character reacts to something BECAUSE of their false belief. It's all about our character's mind tricking them into lies. That's called a cognitive distortion in real life, right? There's a great post by Jami Gold that talks about 15 ways to show false beliefs in our characters. And honestly, they are so much like real life that it kind of hurts. She talks a lot in that post about Michael Hauge who talks a lot about this and is kind of the guru of false belief. Here we go: 15 Ways to Show False Beliefs in Our Characters (Note that these cognitive distortions are not exclusive. We can use multiple methods to show characters' false beliefs throughout a story, so we don't have to choose just one.) If characters believe X about themselves (e.g., they're unlovable), they might react in one or more of the following ways: Filtering: Magnifying the negative and ignoring the positive They'll dwell on plot events that prove their belief right and they'll gloss over those that prove them wrong. Polarized Thinking: Seeing things in black-or-white They'll deem any attempt to overcome that flaw a failure if it doesn't turn out perfectly. Overgeneralization: Basing conclusions on single piece of evidence They'll pick out a single word, act, or event to reinforce their belief. Jumping to Conclusions: Assuming others' feelings or motivations They'll assume others' actions are driven by their flaw. Catastrophizing: Expecting disaster to strike They'll worry a minor mistake due to their flaw will cause great tragedy. Personalization: Taking everything as a direct reaction to them They'll see themselves and their flaw as the cause for everything others do or say. Control Fallacies: Seeing themselves as a victim They'll either think fate forces them to be a victim of their flaw, or they'll make themselves into victims by accepting blame for everything because of their flaw. Fallacy of Fairness: Judging life by “fairness” They'll expect things to turn out positively to make up for the pain “life” inflicted with their Wound. Blaming: Blaming others for troubles They'll think others are responsible for the pain of their Wound. Shoulds: Prioritizing “rules” They'll set up rules for how to deal with situations caused by their belief and feel guilty when they violate those rules. Emotional Reasoning: Believing feelings automatically true They'll trust their feelings about their belief above all other evidence. Fallacy of Change: Expecting others to change They'll expect others to change to accommodate their belief and think their happiness depends on meeting that goal. Global Labeling: Extreme and emotional mislabeling They'll exaggerate and overgeneralize their flaw to the point of creating unhealthy emotions. Always Being Right: Being right is most important trait They'll argue about their belief with the insistence that they're right—no matter the costs (including to others' emotions). Heaven's Reward Fallacy: Expecting actions to “pay off” They'll expect life to reward their sacrifice in the name of their belief. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Sometimes a misbelief can be helpful. Following the Dobbs decision, how can policymakers and adoption agencies ensure that adoption is one of the options women consider when they find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy? In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by https://www.law.edu/about-us/faculty-and-staff/directory/expert-faculty/kirk-elizabeth/index.html (Elizabeth Kirk), director of the Center for Law and the Human Person at Catholic University's Columbus School of Law. Elizabeth explains that adoption is not often considered by mothers because many are unaware of how much control they have in the adoption process, choosing the family they want their child to be raised in. Many people also confuse private infant adoption with adoption out of the foster care system. In order to prioritize adoption as a meaningful choice for women, Elizabeth recommends that states require schools to teach about adoption in sex education classes, using programs like Option Hope in Louisiana. While she praises the adoption tax credit, the kinds of policies that would result in women considering adoption come from improving options counseling and giving birth mothers post-placement counseling. In her fantastic books on story, Lisa Cron, talks about misbeliefs – the psychological flaw in a character that stops them becoming the person they need to be. For her – and for me – the subtext of the story... the way the protagonist changes is the part that really delivers. One of my misbeliefs, for example, was that I didn't have the ability to keep-my-arse-in-the-chair and write a novel. I fought and killed that misbelief in 2016, and CHANGED as a result. What misbelief – although right now you'd call it a belief – is stopping you being the person you could be? What's your hero's journey?
