In our early days of travels to Mexico George Gause and I spent several 20 de Noviembres in Mexico City and other places commemorating the start of the Mexican Revolution in 1910.On November 20, 2024, I was all smiles at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Arts, Culture and Event Center (ACE) in Edinburg. For my longtime library and arts colleague Letty Leija it was the culmination of a long time dream. It was the public celebration of the hard work by her and her colleagues.Letty credits that dream beginning about 2009. During that year Letty, Evana Vleck and I used to sit around and strategize about what we could do in the Arts if we only had money, because we certainly had the programming ideas! At that time Evana was working at Edinburg Chamber of Commerce focusing half her time on Marketing and the other half on Events. She had already done some fabulous events on at IMAS, including a monumental one day Book Festival. I had been working since 2006 with my ArtsRGV centralized events calendar which attempted to list events in Hidalgo, Cameron, Starr, and Willacy Counties. And Letty and I had worked since the mid 1990s on library events. And we all had been involved with Dr. Dahlia Guerra as she founded FESTIBA.At the ribbon cutting Letty credited Evana Vleck and myself and as being members of her original Dream Team. Editor's Note: The above commentary was penned by retired UT-Pan American librarian Virginia Haynie Gause to commemorate the opening of the Arts, Culture and Events (ACE) Center in Edinburg. It first appeared on Haynie Gause's social media pages. Go the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full commentary. It was such an honor to be at the ribbon cutting ceremony to this brand new amazing facility in the Coachella Valley, named: GREEN HORIZONS. We got to speak wit the CO OWNERS Carlos ‘Los' Arias, & Michael Meade. This story is so deep: “Because both Arias and Meade are cancer survivors who used cannabis during their treatment and recovery, Arias says they are driven by more than money and want to further the message of plant medicine in the larger conversation. And with a prime location, low-cost utilities and a city willing to support their endeavors, Green Horizons hopes to be part of that movement for a long time to come. Arias says there is also a heavy social justice component to the Green Horizons goal. The company is partnering with the city of Coachella in launching the “Build the Valley Initiative,” which will consist of two prominent initiatives: first, building infrastructure for the community; and second, advocacy for expungement and job creation for which Green Horizons will create a dedicated Coachella Valley program. “And that's really our secret sauce. What moves us is more altruistic than capitalist,” Arias says. “Our entire thesis and, personally, why I wake up every day and work as hard as I do, is that this industry is going to prove to be the gateway medicine to all of the other medicines.”” Cannabis Talk 101, “The World's #1 Source For Everything Cannabis”, made global history by becoming the first cannabis show to partner with iHeartMedia, on 4/20/2020. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The Port of Brownsville has secured more than $1.1 million in funding from the federal government for its Port of Brownsville Vessel Suitability Analysis and Feasibility project. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, announced the award as part of $15,622,100 in Community Project Funding for the 34th Congressional District of Texas.“The Port of Brownsville is the only deep-water seaport directly on the U.S.- Mexico border and is a key gateway for international commerce and shipping,” Gonzalez told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service. “The over $1.1 million secured for the port's Vessel Suitability Analysis and Feasibility Study is a crucial effort as it will increase the region's, state's, and nation's economic development and ensure we're ready to handle commercial demands for generations to come.”Brownsville Navigation District (BND) Chairman Esteban Guerra said the Vessel Suitability Analysis and Feasibility project is essential to plan and prepare infrastructure improvements at the port. Guerra said the project will evaluate a range of nonstructural and structural options to support and increase the port's capacity to accommodate larger vessels efficiently and safely contributing to a greater economic impact."Congressman Vicente Gonzalez time and time again continues to deliver for the Port of Brownsville and the people of South Texas. By securing the crucial funding for major infrastructure projects, we continue building towards a brighter future with thoughtful and strategic planning. "On behalf of the Brownsville Navigation District, we extend our gratitude to Congressman Gonzalez for his steadfast dedication to the port, our industries, and the communities we serve."Major infrastructure projects in progress at the Port of Brownsville include the construction of a 118-acre business park to support the industrial and manufacturing industries of the Rio Grande Valley as well as the Brazos Island Harbor Channel Improvement Project to deepen the Brownsville ship channel from its current 42 feet to 52 feet, Guerra explained.Advanced Manufacturing Training CenterChairman Guerra spoke recently at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new $30 million advanced manufacturing training center to be built by Texas A&M University. "With the completion of the project we will now increase the capacity for passenger vehicles entering the United States at the Veterans International Bridge with the addition of four Customs and Border Protection primary inspection lanes."The new Headhouse and enhanced security features will now allow CBP to operate the Port of Entry with more efficiency. “These additional lanes have now completed a gap that was included in the original General Services Administration's master plan for the Los Tomates Border Station and a total project cost of $18 million. “Funding for the project was made possible through the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization's allocation of Category 7 federal funds and local contributions. “The Veterans International Bridge at Los Tomates project is a demonstration of the innovative partnership between Cameron County, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. General Services Administration, the Texas Department of Transportation, and Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority, coming together to complete a project of regional, national and international significance.”Here is an audio recording of the remarks of Treviño, Cornyn, Gonzalez, Bradley, and Reyes at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

The ribbon cutting Friday at Schmidt's Farm acknowledged the purchase of over 200 acres of open space with CPA funds. A significant accomplishment for Franklin! Town Council Chair Tom Mercer opened the brief ceremony with a few remarks. (Most were caught on the audio recording):"Good morning. Thank you for joining us on this beautiful day to recognize the Town of Franklin's recently acquired land at Maple Hill and Schmidt Farm for the purpose of preserving open space!I would like to take this opportunity to recognize John Schmidt of Schmidt's Farm, who worked with the Town during the acquisition of the approximately 115 acres we are standing on today. I would also like to acknowledge Kathy Dalzell who is here representing the Dalzell family. The Dalzell family generously provided the Town with 15 acres of land connecting these two parcels - a gift we were extremely grateful for. Please express our gratitude to your family, Kathy. We are very excited to celebrate this marked occasion of the purchase of over 200 acres of public natural resources through the recently adopted Community Preservation Act."Photo album of the ceremony and a brief walk along the propertyhttps://photos.app.goo.gl/Wz79C3HCF4ZYXxsX7

It’s Kentucky’s newest distillery; Log Still Distillery is located in Gethsemane (just outside of Bardstown in Southern Nelson County). We toured the 300-acre “Dant Crossing” property with Founder and President, Wally Dant. Wally, along with his family, Lynne and Charles Dant, are taking on this large project to create a “destination distillery” that is perfect for the whole family. Wally discussed the Dant family history in Nelson County and his efforts to revive the family name in the World of Kentucky Bourbon. He also shared two whiskey offerings that are going to be available at the Log Still tasting room; Monk’s Road Fifth District Series, a 6 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Rattle & Snap, a Limited Release 8 year old 103 proof Tennessee Whiskey. The Tasting Room is Now Open: Sunday 11 am - 5 pm Tuesday - Wednesday 10 am - 6 pm Thursday - Saturday 10 am - 5 pm Bar is Open: Thursday - Saturday 5-10 pm We are thankful for everyone who has taken the time to give us feedback on our podcast. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Log Still Distillery Our story begins with our forefather Joseph Washington Dant and an old hollowed-out poplar log. With it, he fashioned a still and gave birth to the Dant family’s place in bourbon lore with a legacy all our own. In 1836, he started a story of heritage, and Kentucky bourbon has flowed through our family’s veins ever since. Seven generations later, we’re building something new at our old Kentucky home. Spearheaded by J.W. “Wally” Dant and cousins Lynne and Charles, Log Still aims to combine the age-old craftsmanship of distilling with the camaraderie and spirit of a family-owned business. And because family is at the heart of what we do, we view every bottle as a nod of respect to the past. Log Still is Wally Dant’s tribute to his father, forefathers and their contributions to bourbon history. About J.W. “Wally” Dant We call him founder, foreman and fearless leader. You can call him Wally. As president/distiller, Wally Dant works hard every day to bring his vision for Log Still Distillery to life. And to Wally, it’s about more than quality spirits and an unforgettable destination. It’s about revival. The great-great-great-grandson of bourbon legend Joseph Washington Dant, Wally is keeping his family’s rich legacy alive as he builds upon the same land in southern Nelson County where his forefathers once made spirits. “To be able to put our name on a bottle again is pretty important.” Log Still is Wally’s way of honoring the Dant family name and giving back to the community he credits for providing his family with values and love. And drawing from years of experience in the health care and liquor industries, this business-savvy entrepreneur is the right man for the job. Wally dreams big, and he won’t stop until he sees those dreams come to fruition. And the future? Log Still is still family-owned and run by the Dants. If he’s not hard at work reviving the Log Still legacy, you can likely find him making garden-fresh salsa, hot sauce or ketchup, or cooking up a chef-like meal for friends and family. Product – Available in the Log Still Tasting Room - Opened May 18, 2021 Monk’s Road Fifth District Series With Monk’s Road Fifth District Series, we tip our hat to the historic tax district of Central Kentucky, deeply seeped in bourbon lore. With this rotating series of hand selected spirits, we honor a rich tradition of nearly lost fifth district distilleries. It’s all part of a long line of rotating Bluegrass-inspired bourbons created with the same ingenuity and fortitude made famous by our forefathers. So just this once, let’s celebrate the taxman. This first Limited Release pays homage to Cold Spring Distillery, a historic distillery in southern Nelson County, Ky., founded by J.B. Dant in the 1800s. The Cold Spring name harkened back to the spring where, even in the summer, the water stayed cool enough that the distillery could continue to operate. This 6-year-old bourbon masterfully blends notes of corn, rye and malted barley for a product that revives the spirit of the original. Monk’s Road Dry Gin Our essential gin is a unique offering from our Kentucky hills, with a delicate balance of distinctly complementary botanicals. We’ve married watermelon rind with zests of orange and lemon for a bright and fresh flavor – creating the perfect gin for all seasons and palates. Sip it slow and neat or dress it up in a cocktail. This palate pleaser possesses an air of refinement. Monk’s Road Barrel Finished Gin Utilizing our bourbon barrels, we handcrafted this barrel finished gin in homage to the rolling Kentucky hills we call home, allowing fresh botanicals of coriander, cranberry, juniper and nutmeg to develop and mature into the perfect flavor profile. Smooth and complex with a subtle waft of smoke, Monk’s Road Barrel Finished Gin nods to the pride of place, tradition and legacy for which the Dant family is known. Rattle & Snap Tennessee Whiskey Several varieties of straight and flavored whiskeys will be available soon for patrons who may want to branch out from traditional, Kentucky Bourbon. About Dant Crossing Approximately an hour’s drive from both Louisville and Lexington, Dant Crossing is a picturesque, 300-plus acre campus with a slew of amenities and activities for the whole family.
