Christmas is the second scariest holiday of the year. From scary decorations to Christmas horror movies, there are a lot of things for horror fans to look forward to during the Yuletide season. It makes complete sense that Spirit Halloween would have a Spirit Christmas store. Though it is disappointing that they do not seem to be going a more horror-centric direction with it.We know what we are in for when we are going to cover a movie from The Asylum. Halloween Night from 2006 sounded as original as anything else they have ever done. The plot focuses on a young boy who has spent a decade in an asylum and is now heading home to wreak havoc. Oh yeah. It is also set on Halloween. If only it were that derivative. The story somehow manages to be straightforward and confusing. The Big Bad is one of the best from the studio. Unfortunately, he is offset by a lead who is one of the worst in cinema history. This describes Halloween Night in a nutshell. For everything it does right, it does a number of things completely wrong. But if you are participating in a 31 Days Horror Challenge is it worth a watch? We have covered a few Stephen King adaptations on our humble little podcast. We have yet to cover a really great one. The third Salem's Lot remake had a lot going against it. The source material is one of King's best and Tobe Hooper's take on the story is iconic. Add in that the 2024 version has been in limbo for a few years and you have a recipe for disappointment. We have yet to cover a truly awesome King movie, but the latest version of Salem's Lot does a lot of good things. The question here is not if it is actually good, but will people accept it? It seems to boil down to how familiar you are with other versions of the tale. It is by no means a masterpiece, but it may serve as a great introduction into one of the most important names in horror history. Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Paranormal Activity, the 2007 American supernatural horror film produced, written, directed, photographed, and edited by Oren Peli. It centers on a young couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who are haunted by a supernatural presence inside their home. They then set up a camera to document what is haunting them. The film uses found-footage conventions that were mirrored in the later films of the series. Originally developed as an independent feature and given film festival screenings in 2007, the film was shot for $15,000. It was then acquired by Paramount Pictures and modified, particularly with a new ending that cost an additional $200,000. It was given a limited U.S. release on September 25, 2009, and then a nationwide release on October 16, 2009. The film earned nearly $108 million at the U.S. box office and a further $85 million internationally for a worldwide total of $194 million. Paramount/DreamWorks acquired the U.S. rights for $350,000. It is often cited as the most profitable film ever made, based on proportionate return on investment, although such figures are difficult to verify independently as this is likely to exclude marketing costs. It directly led to found footage becoming a horror movie trend for years, with The Last Exorcism, Apollo 18, The Devil Inside, and the V/H/S series arriving in its wake. Mockbuster group The Asylum created their take on the film, titled Paranormal Entity, which would later spawn a series of its own. In Japan, a sequel entitled Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night was released in 2010. On March 7, 2010, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin performed a spoof of the film as part of the 82nd Academy Awards. Did you know there was a Titanic II? In this podcast we wish we didn't, as we tackle this dubious 2010 mockbuster pretend sequel from The Asylum!
Hey listener! Let's dive into the fake, shall we? On this episode of Baconsale, Joel, Kent & Zack are going to be ranking movies that don't really exist. We found a website that lists fictional films found in shows such as Home Alone, 30 Rock, Singin' in the Rain, Seinfeld, UHF, Tropic Thunder, and The Office. Therefore, we'll be discussing which movies we would go see if they were real, which ones deserve a tier Tubi, and which films we're glad were never actually made. We may not agree a lot, but we'll certainly have fun chatting about counterfeit cinema. If you know the difference between a matinee and a manatee, press play!
Science Fiction, Comic Verfilmungen, Krimis, etc. Die extreme Variante davon sind Mockbuster. Dominic hat ein paar im Gepäck - don't fall for it. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the (overdue) season 3 finale, Nate is forced to deal with Cameron Winter's “Christmas gift”: the Asylum's infamous Monster Island. It's supposedly a “mockbuster” of 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but even by the Asylum's standards, that's a stretch. To unravel the legal loopholes and shenanigans that went into making this...movie, Nate brings on the Island's star lawyer, Raymund Martin, and the man's paralegal, Gary Steward. Not only do they riff this half-competent (and therefore, boring) “kaiyu” flick into the ground, they give you a crash course in the history of the Asylum and mockbusters. Nate's contractual obligations are now complete! Beforehand, Nate delivers his final report as the nonexistent “media master” to Mr. Gold, who reveals a few tantalizing details about what's been happening on the Island lately. Guest Cast Michael Hamilton as Mr. Gold Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin and Gary Steward This episode's prologue, “Heart of Gold,” was written by Michael Hamilton and Nathan Marchand. Additional music: “This Cowboy's Hat” (instrumental) by Chris LeDoux “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson “Circus Music” (public domain) “Kaiju rap” by Jonah Ray “Chant My Name!” by Masaaki Endo Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org, including those by Brad Wesson. When small-time money counterfeiter Edward L. Montoro nearly dies in a plane crash, he decides to reinvent himself as a filmmaker. It's the late 1970s, the dawn of the age of the blockbuster, and Montoro pioneers the "mockbuster"—knock-off productions that capitalize on the popularity of mainstream Hollywood films. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me: Was hat DIE FRAU IM NEBEL zu verbergen? Adios.

In this episode in honor of the release of the latest Marvel Thor film, we take a look at The Mockbuster from The Asylum, Almighty Thor (2011). When the god of deception Loki (Richard Grieco) wipes off the city of Valhalla to steal the Hammer Of Invincibility, only the young hero Thor (Cody Deal) can recover the cities from evil. When Thor's father and older brother are killed in a futile attempt to retrieve the hammer from Loki, a Valkyrie named Jarnsaxa (Patricia Velásquez) attempts to train a naïve and inexperienced warrior Thor to fight Loki. Say what?!?
Ever stopped your Netflix scrolling to click on that new Marvel movie you've been dying to watch, only to realize that the dude playing “Almighty Thor” has absolutely no resemblance to Chris Hemsworth, and his hammer looks more like a dog bone stuck onto a baseball bat? (Obviously this is a purely hypothetical situation with no basis in reality.) Well then, friend, you have been duped by the marketing savvy of the infamous film production company, “The Asylum.” Ray teaches Rob about how seriously The Asylum takes its mission of producing crappy movies; the dangers of mixing sharks and time travel; the scenic deserts of Acton, California; and why making low-budget and legally questionable movies is actually a worthy endeavor. Hello listeners! Jess here. I had the chance to interview one of my former students, Will Morey, about his career as a writer. He has always been talented, and even way back when I knew him in high school English class (actually, since he was eight) he has dreamed of working in movies and television. We talk through his entire career, from a high school screenplay about vampires to working in professional theater, to helping create (and this was a new word for me) “Mockbusters,” or close-but-not-quite versions of big Hollywood blockbuster films, to working as a “Conform,” (another new word to me) to breaking through and writing animated features such as Spy Kids: Mission Critical and Dragons: Race to the Edge and Dragons: Rescue Riders. He’s currently querying literary agents for a novel he completed this year and in true #AmWriting fashion, we had to talk about how he selected the agents he has decided to reach out to and why. At its core, this is a discussion about an education in writing for television and how the “little jobs” are often incredibly valuable as learning experiences in an industry with its own process, language, and expectations. And a walk down memory lane for Jess and Will. Links from the PodWill Morey on Twitter: willofmarsWill Morey on Instagram: @will_of_mars#AmReadingWe did not do #AmReading because, to be honest, Jess was using her own personal version of Zoom and we’d bumped up against our time limit. And—got a burning question about a writing life issue? Something on your mind you’d love for us to help you with? Email us at amwriting@substack.com. We can’t promise to answer everyone, but if we think we could be useful to you (or know someone who can) and if your issue is of interest to other listeners, we might invite you to come on the podcast for a little coaching. Finally, KJ here with a little news about Author Accelerator’s Book Coach Certification Program. I’m in the middle of it! You might remember this bonus episode, where Jennie Nash and I discussed “Shiny Thing Syndrome” and I was dubious about whether working with other writers as a book coach was a great side gig or a distraction for ME. Since then, I’ve been trying on the coach role in a number of small ways, and I’ve decided to go all in. This program is absolutely everything you need to get started from the editorial, coaching and business perspectives. It’s also entertaining and inspirational and makes me want to leap in right away. Learn more at Bookcoaches.com. (Want to see what I’m doing? Click here.) This is a public episode. Get access to private episodes at amwriting.substack.com/subscribe

We are trying out something different this week that is similar to a special episode we did way back at the beginning of The Movie Breakdown. In 2013, we did something called Mockbuster vs. Blockbuster where we compared a big blockbuster movie against the Asylum knock-off of that movie to see which one was better. We only ever did one episode. This time, two major movies are going to be matched in what may turn out to be a few times a year special. The inaugural grudge match will see two beloved sci-fi thrillers from the 1980 go head-to-head in The Terminator vs. The Thing. There will be ten rounds in this big match-up. Each category will look at a specific aspect of the movie like the plot and lead performance and score. Both hosts will decide which movie they feel wins in that category, and then in the end, we add up the score to see the 1980s sci-fi thriller that is the true champion. Now of course, with their being ten rounds and two hosts, there is a chance that this all ends in a tie. But what is the chances of that?It is also a great chance for us to discuss and celebrate two of our favourite movies ever. We had a great time discussing them, and we hope you love it as well, If you do, then please help us out by spreading the word to other movie fans.Reminder that you can subscribe either to The Movie Breakdown feed (a subscription link is at the top right hand of this site), or on sites like Spotify, Stitcher, Apple Podcast, Google Podcasts, CastBox, and Amazon Music.
