I received this excellent question in my Instagram DM "How do you decide which scientific research to listen to? Particularly when it comes to health-related topics like what is healthy to eat and what is not? It seems there is a pretty consistent message in science and research to avoid highly processed foods and sugar. But on the finer points with things such as seed oils, carnivore diet, intermittent fasting, coffee/tea etc. it seems that there is just as much research on the opposite side of the thing you and Greg believe. For example, I can find research from all kinds of researchers, scientists, and doctors saying that coffee/tea is either neutral or slightly beneficial while you and Greg believe it is unhealthy. And the same for how many vegetables/grains should be included in a diet. There is a lot of research saying you should be eating a wide variety of plant fiber. With all of the mix of information, I'm just wondering what your process is for deciding what to listen to or believe?" The world of 'what to eat' and 'what is healthy' is more confusing now than it ever has been in the history of the world. Why are humans are more confuddled now than ever about what to put in their mouths? Why do we have so many 'diets' that seem healthy but are actually malnourishing or toxic? In this episode, Greg and Rachel will dive into why 'food' is so confusing these days and how to know what to believe about all the conflicting research that is out there. They also talk about why many people become 'converted' to diets such as vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, raw, etc. -- and why this 'conversion' should not be a long-term, life-long decision. If you have ever struggled to know what is healthy or wondered 'what to eat', or felt that your food lifestyle choice was the 'right' one -- then don't miss this eye-opening, horizon-expanding episode that brings the 'food debate' full circle. Nesse, an evolutionary biologist and psychiatrist, in collaboration with George C. Williams. Published in 1994, the book explores the field of evolutionary medicine and proposes that many human diseases and conditions can be better understood through an evolutionary perspective. The book argues that diseases are not simply arbitrary malfunctions of the body but have a purpose from an evolutionary standpoint. It suggests that these diseases are ultimately a result of evolutionary trade-offs, adaptations, and constraints. Nesse explains that natural selection is not perfect, and the body's responses to diseases, such as fever or nausea, may actually be advantageous for survival.Nesse highlights various diseases and conditions, such as allergies, mental illnesses, cancer, and infectious diseases, and how they can be better understood through an evolutionary lens. He discusses the evolutionary origins of these diseases and provides insights into why they continue to exist in humans.Additionally, the book addresses how our modern lifestyle and environment can contribute to the emergence of new diseases. It explores topics such as antibiotic resistance, obesity, and stress-related disorders, showing how these modern challenges affect our health and well-being.Overall, "Why We Get Sick" introduces readers to the emerging field of evolutionary medicine. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Morgan Nolte, PT, DPT, Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist (ABPTS) is the founder of Zivli, LLC. This episode originally aired in March 2022. She graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2014 and completed the Creighton University Hillcrest Health Systems Geriatric Physical Therapy Residency Program in 2015. Outside of work she loves cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers, spending time with her husband, Justin, playing with their kids Dawson and Leah, devouring audiobooks, and being active. In this episode, Dr. Morgan Nolte opens the show by diving into her background and why she is so passionate about disease prevention. Keeping insulin low is one of the most significant ways to prevent disease; Dr. Nolte explains the role of insulin in the body and why having too much of it can wreak havoc on the body. Then, Dr. Nolte speaks about why caloric restriction is not an efficient way to keep weight off; in reality, keeping insulin low is a way to maintain a healthy weight and prevent disease. Tune in as we chat about why intermittent fasting is excellent for your gut, and Dr. Nolte reveals some of her favorite resources for maintaining a healthy mind. [00:40] Dr. Nolte Speaks About Her Background and The Importance of Disease Prevention Dr. Nolte is a geriatric physical therapist by trade. Plus, she has additional training to be board certified in geriatrics. Dr. Nolte would see people in their sixties who were acting like they were eighty. The care and services that Dr. Nolte would provide seemed like it was too little and too late. Insulin resistance is at the core of all the conditions that Dr. Nolte treats. The longer you hold off making those lifestyle changes, the harder it will be to get healthier. The longer we continue to make poor decisions, the easier those decisions are to maintain. [10:15] The Role of Insulin In Health and Disease Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. It is a good thing and a vital hormone. Insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning its role is to build things up. Insulin's role is to move blood sugar, or blood glucose from your bloodstream, into your cells to be either used as energy right away or to be stored in the form of muscle glycogen, liver glycogen, adipose tissue, or fat tissue. Exercise will reduce blood sugar. You shouldn't focus on calories. Instead, you should focus on blood sugar for weight loss. When insulin continues to go up, your cells will become resistant to that insulin. Eventually, you will start to see blood sugars go up. Remember, 88% of adults have insulin resistance. If you learn how to live a low insulin lifestyle, you'll lose weight and prevent disease. [22:50] Your Metabolism Will Slow Down With Chronic Caloric Restriction A fascinating study showed chronic caloric restriction slows your metabolism for six months to four years. When you return to your old eating habits, you'll gain weight because your metabolism has slowed down. Many doctors don't have the capacity and the resources to help their patients with nutrition. Overall, we need more proactive measures, and we need to take responsibility for our health. [25:40] Stop Asking This Question: “How Do I Lose Weight?” We are asking the wrong question. We shouldn't ask, “how do I lose weight?” In reality, you should be asking, “how do I lower insulin?” The quality of the questions you are asking will determine the quality of your life. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, that takes an entirely different approach and mindset. Anyone who has been in the coaching business understands that mindset trumps everything else. If you don't have the mindset in place, all other strategies will fall short. [27:25] Autosuggestions Can Help You Live A Healthy Lifestyle Here are some books that will help with your mindset: Think and Grow Rich: https://www.amazon.com/Think-Grow-Rich-Napoleon-Hill/dp/0449214923/benazadi-20 Atomic Habits: https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299/benazadi-20 Traction: https://www.amazon.com/Traction-Gino-Wickman-audiobook/dp/B00A9Z973M/benazadi-20 The systems that Dr. Nolte learned to implement in her business are things like being accountable, being productive, and being focused. These are exactly the same systems that her clients need to stay focused and accountable towards their new healthy lifestyle. For Dr. Nolte, living a healthy lifestyle is automatic to her. She wants to help her clients automatically live a healthy lifestyle too. [44:45] Why Does Intermittent Fasting Work So Well For The Gut? My guest today is Benjamin Bikman, a teaching professor and author. Ben holds a degree in bioenergetics and is an associate professor at BYU. His research focuses on understanding the role of elevated insulin in regulating obesity and diabetes, including the relevance of ketones in mitochondrial function. This conversation revolves around chronic inflammation, how to avoid it, and the difference between measuring glucose and true insulin sensitivity. Ben is clearly on a mission to not only keep people healthy but also to help us understand the impact on our insulin sensitivity and the importance of factors such as movement, food, sleep, stress management, and more, in protecting our gut and maintaining insulin sensitivity. There are numerous useful takeaways from this conversation that can be immediately implemented, regardless of our conditioning or health level. Ben explains how certain oils (hidden in many of our foods) can harm our microbiome wall and how fruit juice can lead to fatty liver. He also discusses universal health principles that can benefit everyone. Additionally, Ben shares insights on the best time to eat dinner or consume calories throughout the day, and why he advocates for fasting and its benefits. Enjoy! Men, when we were in our teens, 20's and 30's, many of us could get away with eating whatever we wanted, and exercising on occasion. But when we crossed over that 40th milestone, things started to change. Some of us felt as if we slowed down. Our bodies started aching more than usual. Our waistlines seemed to expand over night. Clothes don't seem to fit right. Energy seem low. Constantly exhausted. And our we found ourselves taking more trips to the pharmacy. What happens overtime when you neglect your health?Missing early signs of an underlying problemRisk of heart disease and heart attackObesityType 2 DiabetesHigh Blood PressureHigh cholesterol CancerHealth can affect relationshipsWhat value will the listener receive?Learn simple ways to improve your overall health Receive Practical Recommendations for Developing Lifelong Good Habits Develop Self-Motivation When You're Tempted to Quit Recommended Resources:Download Oscar's FREE guide, “Healthy Grocery Shopping Guide: Fruits & Veggies Edition”Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease and How to Fight It by Benjamin Bikman, PhDEat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself by William Li, MDHealing Foods: Eat Your Way tp a Healthier Life by DK Publishing How to Be a Conscious Eater: Making Food Choices That Are Good for You, Others and the Planet by Sophie Egan_____________________Connect With MeTo submit a question or join my mailing list, use the information below to connect with me.Join My Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/beatingdiabeteslifestyle Web - www.beatingdiabeteslifestyle.comEmail - hello@beatingdiabeteslifestyle.comInstagram - @beatingdiabeteslifestyleHiHo - https://hiho.link/g/beatingdiabeteslife_____________________©2022 Oscar Camejo - The Beating Diabetes Lifestyle

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Morgan Nolte, PT, DPT, Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist (ABPTS) is the founder of Zivli, LLC. Cancer. Alzheimer's. Heart disease. Diabetes. Infertility. While these prevalent and dreaded diseases are caused by multiple factors, my guest says they also all share a common thread: a ubiquitous and too-little-understood condition called insulin resistance. His name is Dr. Benjamin Bikman and he's a professor of biology and physiology, an expert in obesity and metabolic disorders, and the author of Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease — and How to Fight It. Ben begins our conversation by explaining insulin's role in the body, how it goes awry when it comes to Type I and II diabetes, and how giving Type II diabetics insulin to treat their disease actually makes them “fatter and sicker, and kills them faster.” We then turn to the fact that even if you don't have diabetes, you very likely still have insulin resistance (something helpful to keep in mind during this conversation is that "insulin resistance" is bad and "insulin sensitivity" is good), and the condition's three primary causes. Benjamin then unpacks how insulin resistance correlates with cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and reproductive health problems, including the fact that erectile dysfunction isn't a function of low testosterone, but insulin resistance. We then talk about the role of insulin resistance in someone's susceptibility to COVID-19. We end our conversation with the four pillars of reversing insulin resistance, including the role of diet and physical activity, and how these lifestyle changes can work to help relatively healthy people get healthier, all the way up to allowing diabetics to get off their medication.I can't tell you how motivating this conversation was for me to start a habit of walking more during the day, as well as after dinner. I bet it will have the same effect on you.Resources Related to the PodcastInsulin resistanceConnection between high blood pressure and insulin resistanceErectile dysfunction and insulin resistanceConnection between cancer and insulin resistanceCOVID-19 severity and insulin resistanceAoM's series on testosteroneAoM's fitness articlesAoM's article on the benefits of cold showersAoM podcast on intermittent fastingAoM article on intermittent fastingHLTHCode (We're not affiliated with this company and they're not a sponsor, but we tried it, and love it, and have been consuming it daily.)Connect With Benjamin BikmanBenjamin's lab websiteBenjamin on Instagram
Throughout 2021 we've had hundreds of people try out our bloodsmart.ai software within the format of our monthly group program. We've met clients from all walks of life – some athletes, some not – but most want the same things: to feel better now and to preserve healthspan later. Over the years – and especially more recently after racing was cancelled – my own goals have also shifted from athletic performance, instead landing on what needs to be done to maximise healthspan – that is the period of life spent in good health, free from the chronic diseases and disabilities of ageing. Talking each week to others with the same goals has become a highlight of my work week... On this podcast, NBT Scientific Director and coach Megan Hall and I are discussing my latest blood chemistry results and bloodsmart.ai report. I was pleased with my results a couple of years ago when my Overall Wellness Score reached a perfect 100. This time around, however, there's room for improvement, and Megan offers her usual excellent advice. If you'd like to get a blood test + a bloodsmart.ai report along with a series of group coaching sessions with Megan and me, we can arrange that for you. The coaching sessions take on a format much like this podcast, with individual reports reviewed and advice for a path forward described in detail. Be sure to follow along with this episode with Megan's detailed outline. Here's the outline of this interview with Megan Hall: [00:00:25] Podcasts featuring Brianna Stubbs, PhD: 1, 2, 3, 4. Imagine if just one spark could drastically improve our chances to avoid serious illness. We have far more control over our health than we may think, because a lot of it comes down to what we eat, according to Dr. Benjamin Bikman. He is a leading expert on insulin resistance, a condition that arises from eating too much sugar and the resulting constant high level of insulin in the body. Dr. Bikman has compiled an incredible breadth of research on this condition and how it relates to other serious illnesses, all of which he boiled down into his book, Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease and How to Fight It. Dr. Bikman's research focus is on metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. He received a Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. His research and academic training have led him to a simple conclusion: that insulin resistance wreaks havoc on our health. Dr. Bikman explains that 9 out of 10 of us have some degree of insulin resistance, which can cause diabetes, heart disease, and even Alzheimer's. It can also fuel and worsen cancer. But there's great news: insulin resistance is almost entirely and rapidly reversible through diet, fasting, and stress reduction. Dr. Bikman lays out the steps you can take to improve your diet and lifestyle to avoid insulin resistance. Cutting out sugar and carbohydrates, eating proteins and fats, fasting, and better sleep can all make a big difference in your health and repair or even reverse damage from years of a bad diet. He tackles bad dietary practices such as eating a carbohydrate-heavy breakfast or snacking every couple of hours. As he acknowledges, his message is easy to say and harder to do, but it offers hope that you can fight back against chronic illness. Dr. Bikman's project is to get his message out to as many people as he can so they can take charge of their health, eat better, and prevent serious disease.

Currently, his professional focus is to better understand the origins and consequences of metabolic disorders, including obesity and diabetes, with a particular emphasis on the role of insulin. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science and public meetings. On this podcast, Ben talks with NBT Scientific Director Megan Hall about insulin resistance: what causes it, how it develops in the body, and the downstream effects of this all-too-common condition. Ben discusses the role of insulin as a regulator of human metabolism and its relevance in the development of most chronic diseases. He also offers a simple and effective prescription for optimal metabolic health and healthy ageing. As a professor of pathophysiology and biomedical scientist at Brigham Young University, Dr. Benjamin Bikman set out to understand chronic diseases better. He specifically wanted to know how they can eventually lead to negative health outcomes like obesity and diabetes. And what he found was a common driver in many of these health issues is insulin resistance. But, as you'll hear in this episode, you can have high insulin levels for decades before you even realize it's happening and your glucose may not spike until it's far too late. To help prevent this from happening, and to help reduce insulin levels in people who are already sick, Dr. Ben Bikman has made it his mission to help educate people on this exact topic. And he comes on the show to share his top tips for doing just that. So you'll discover the problems associated with high insulin levels, what causes this, what you can do to bring down insulin, and how it becomes a problem in the first place. Dr. Bikman also dives into why pumping diabetics with insulin makes things worse, insulin resistance in pregnancy, and how insulin acts in people on keto or low carb diets. He also chats about the biggest mistake people make when fasting, how to avoid this, the role linoleic acid plays in insulin resistance, why calorie counting doesn't work (and what will instead), and his three pillars to lower insulin levels starting today. Dr. Benjamin Bikman earned his Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Duke-National University in Singapore in metabolic disorders. He's also the author of the best-selling book, Why We Get Sick: The Hidden Epidemic at the Root of Most Chronic Disease—and How to Fight It. Tune into the episode now to learn more! P.S. Ben has also been kind enough to give us a discount for his meal replacement shake that we talk about in the episode. Visit getHLTH.com and use the code ANSWERS for 10% off.

How Insulin Resistance Destroys Your Brain and Promotes Alzheimer's and Cognitive Decline | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker.Nearly six million individuals live with Alzheimer's disease in the U.S., and the numbers continue to rise. After 30 years of encountering dead ends while addressing Alzheimer's disease as a problem of brain plaques, researchers are looking at other contributing factors. There is a growing body of evidence that indicates a strong correlation between Alzheimer's disease and a disrupted metabolic state, where the brain can't get enough energy. On today's episode of The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Benjamin Bikman, a renowned metabolic research scientist, and a popular speaker on human metabolism and nutrition. Backed by years of research, Dr. Bikman's mission is to help the world appreciate the prevalence and relevance of insulin resistance. He is the author of, Why We Get Sick, which offers a thought-provoking yet real solution to insulin resistance and how to reverse pre-diabetes, improve brain function, shed fat, and prevent diabetes. Dr. Bikman has a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioenergetics from East Carolina University, a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology, and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University. In this episode, we dive into: -Why Alzheimer's disease is increasingly being referred to as insulin resistance of the brain or type 3 diabetes (11:13) -How the brain runs on different fuel sources (14:07) -Why insulin prevents the production of ketones (19:42) -Early signs of potential cognitive decline (30:45) -Common foods that drive insulin resistance (41:32) -The role insulin resistance plays in migraine headaches and epilepsy (56:05) -Where to get your carbohydrates from (1:06:09) -Foods that fuel your body and brain (1:09:24) -How seed oils wreak havoc on our health (1:17:28) -What you can do today to reduce your risk for Alzheimer's disease (1:28:03) For more on Dr. Bikman you can follow him on Instagram @BenBikmanPhD, on Facebook @BenjaminBikmanPhD, on Twitter @BenBikmanPhD, and through his websites http://bikmanlab.byu.edu/ and https://www.insuliniq.com/.
