“Chemical analysis of fresh and aged Australian e-cigarette liquids” published in the Medical Journal of Australia “Electronic cigarette usage patterns and perceptions in adult Australians” published in Toxics in 2023.Chemical analysis of fresh and aged Australian e-cigarette liquidsAlexander Larcombe, Sebastien Allard, Paul Pringle, Ryan Mead-Hunter, Natalie Anderson, Benjamin MullinsAffiliations expandPMID: 34528266DOI: 10.5694/mja2.51280AbstractObjectives: To assess the chemical composition of electronic cigarette liquids (e-liquids) sold in Australia, in both their fresh and aged forms.Design, setting: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of commercial e-liquids sold in Australia (online and physical stores).Main outcome measures: Chemical composition of 65 Australian e-liquids - excipients/solvents, flavouring chemicals, other known e-liquid constituents (including nicotine), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - before and after an accelerated ageing process that simulated the effects of vaping. Results: The measured levels of propylene glycol and glycerol often diverged from those recorded on the e-liquid label. All e-liquids contained one or more potentially harmful chemicals, including benzaldehyde, menthol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Nicotine or nicotyrine were detected in a small proportion of e-liquids at extremely low concentrations. Conclusions: Australian e-liquids contain a wide variety of chemicals for which information on inhalation toxicity is not available. Further analyses are required to assess the potential long term effects of e-cigarette use on health.Electronic Cigarette Usage Patterns and PErceptions in Audult AustraliansAbstract (abbreviated)In this study, we screened 2217 adult Australians with the aim of assessing these questions in a sample of current or former e-cigarette users. A total of 505 out of 2217 respondents were current or former e-cigarette users, with only these respondents completing the full survey. Key findings of this survey included the high proportion of respondents who indicated they were currently using e-cigarettes (307 out of 2217 = 13.8%), and the high proportion of current e-cigarette users that were also smokers (74.6%). The majority of respondents used e-liquids containing nicotine (70.3%), despite it being illegal in Australia without a prescription, and the majority bought their devices and liquids in Australia (65.7%). A significant proportion of current e-cigarette users (30.6%) thought that e-cigarettes were completely safe to use long-term, although in general, there was a large amount of uncertainty/ambivalence with respect to perceptions of e-cigarette safety and efficacy as smoking cessation tools. This study shows that e-cigarette use is common in Australia, and that appropriate dissemination of unbiased research findings on their safety and efficacy in smoking cessation is urgently required.

Talk about a great natter with a fantastic friend. Natalie Anderson is what you might describe as 'good energy', incredible company, good chat and always keen to pass on the latest snippet of advice to make someone else's life easier. That's one of the reasons she started The Capsule, a place where you canfind all of Natalie's recommendations for a healthy, happy lifestyle - essentially taking the guesswork and legwork out of finding the things you need and the things you love. What she started talking about was her own experience with anxiety, something she kept private but started sharing solutions to on The Capsule before opening up about her own experiences and creating a community of women who felt the same and were as keen to find solutions and balms as she was. What started as a blog, following her time as a columnist at Hello magazine, has turned into a huge enterprise and I'm delighted to learn what more's to come from Natalie and The Capsule and find out what's working for her in 2024!To join the Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter.Subscribe now. Nursing has become a more attractive career path and despite the pandemic, more people want to get into the profession.Figures released by the Ministry of Health through the NZ Nursing Council show almost 65,000 nurses hold practising certificates as of January 2022.That's 8.2 per cent more than when the pandemic began in March 2020, and 12 per cent more than in 2019.Figures released by the Ministry of Education show 1030 more nurses are enrolled in courses across the country, than in 2018.Ara Institute of Canterbury Co-Head of Nursing Karen Edgecombe said nursing has always been an attractive career, but these days it's viewed as a secure job to have.“We are always going to need nurses in our health system, whether it's in hospitals or out in the community”.“There's various aspects of nursing you can do, from general medical and surgical to mental health, working in the District Health Boards or working in General Practices”.Ara saw a 26 per cent increase in applications for nursing since 2020.Edgecombe said people look at what's happening with the pandemic, and see it as their calling to join up and help in the fight. She said New Zealanders have a ‘want to help' attitude.“A lot of personal statements [from applicants] are starting to include recognition of the communities in which they live in and wanting to help their Māori, Pasifika or international communities' '.However, there are still staffing shortages in the profession across the country right now, despite the increase in people holding practising certificates and more people wanting to study nursing.A Ministry of Health spokesperson said this was due to border closures and Covid-19 activities that require a number of strategies to bolster and support the workforce.A major independent report released this month also found nurses are overworked and exhausted because of consistent understaffing, and patients are not always getting full care. The report reviewed the safe staffing programme, Care Capacity Demand Management Programme, put in place 15 years ago to measure the number of nurses working against the number needed. It found not all District Health Boards had been following the programme properly. The ministry spokesperson said significant work is underway to ease nursing shortages in New Zealand, including increasing the number of Critical Care nurses by encouraging more nurses to complete post-graduate training in critical care.A joint Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education programme has also been set up to increase the number of people studying nursing. This month, the Ministry of Health also launched a $1 million fund to help former nurses return to the healthcare sector, to focus on growing the workforce as pressures from COVID-19 continue.A maximum of 200 nurses are eligible for the funding across two rounds of applications. It covers up to $5000 of an applicant's training courses, English language proficiency tests, administration fees and other individual costs. The Ministry's Chief Nursing Officer Lorraine Hetaraka said the fund helps nurses who are not currently practising to return to a nursing role, to meet increased demand, support safe staffing, and improve access to care.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Natalie Anderson at OT Plus talks about preventing falls.
Natalie Anderson at OT Plus compares features of Home Health vs. Home Care.
Natalie Anderson is best known for being the season 29 champion of the CBS reality show, Survivor. However, fans of the show might be surprised to know that the struggles and stresses of being stranded on a deserted island paled in comparison to the turmoil Natalie faced while battling post-concussion syndrome (PCS) after being named soul survivor in San Juan Del Sur. While growing up in Sri Lanka during the Sri Lankan Civil War with her twin sister Nadiya (who also competed on Survivor), Natalie was always into playing sports. Specifically, Natalie swam, played rugby and threw the javelin in high school, but focused on rugby while studying at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY. This is where Natalie suffered her first diagnosed concussion (2007), which left her feeling hazy, sluggish and with headaches. Rugby was a club sport at Fordham and there were no athletic trainers covering their games, so there was no return to play protocol followed, but her symptoms subsided after about a week. It looks like they could have used insights from my man Dr. Robert Huggins at the Korey Stringer Institute (Episode 41) who was instrumental in implementing athletic training coverage for club sports at Sacred Heart University and UCONN. During our conversation we also talk about her recovery from an ACL injury she sustained while playing rugby during her senior season. This is where her interest in physical therapy and athletic training was sparked. While taking pre-requisites for graduate school in 2013, Natalie suffered concussion #2 when she closed the trunk of a car, forgetting there was a bike rack attached to it. This concussion left her with blurred vision, headaches, sensitivity to light and sound all of which lingered for close to a month. After this concussion, Natalie grew concerned over her future brain health, especially in regard to her future academic goals. Before this concussion, Natalie and her sister Nadiya competed on their first reality show together, which was the 21st season of The Amazing Race, after a friend submitted a video application in for them. They also competed in the 24th season All-Stars edition of the show. School was put on hold while filming these shows so when the decision was finally made to attend Seton Hall University and earn a masters degree in athletic training, the third and most recent concussion was that much more devastating. Natalie (Left), Twin Sister Nadiya (Right). Natalie utilized CrossFit training while preparing for competing on Survivor. During our interview, she gives partial credit to CrossFit and to her training partner, Sheila Barden (CrossFit Games Competitor) for her success on the show. However, her post-survivor training ultimately led to concussion #3 while standing up into a racked barbell after adjusting her knee sleeve. To make matters worse, she was in grad school at this time and was actually struck in the head by a soccer ball while taping an athletes ankle during her first clinical emersion at a local high school. This was all while still symptomatic from the training accident. Natalie is a survivor through and through and credits a lot of her success to her ability to push and persevere. Unfortunately, the symptoms from these two concussions eventually became too much to handle, even with assistance from disability services at school (any athlete struggling with PCS should seek out this type of help from their school, it is your right). Natalie teaches us how to utilize the support of disability services at schools in this episode. After receiving a text from her classmate and good friend, Pete saying "A Champion Knows When To Rest," Natalie decided to take a medical leave from school, but plans on re-enrolling this fall now that she is feeling better. Natalie about to hit some front squats! Like many athletes, the survivor mentality can work to both your advantage and demise at times. Sometimes you need to know when to wave the white flag and take care of yourself. Most of us don't have that voice in our head's, but sometimes we need a friend to be that voice. Natalie found great help and symptom relief from utilizing the services from our Episode 14 guest, Dr. Mike Teytelbaum, who is a chiropractic neurologist. I encourage you to listen to this episode if you struggle with PCS. She also found hope emotionally through listening to many of the concussion related interviews on this podcast. Search "concussion" on the home page to find all episodes pertaining to concussions. Some other topics we cover include : Her winning strategy going into Survivor The weirdest thing she ate on survivor What she did with her winnings Donation to her mother's non-profit Bridge 2 Peace Mission: To empower the marginalized and under -privileged through Peace Education and Vocational Training based on Montessori principles. Natalie Anderson is a teacher who resides in Suffern, NY with her husband, three children, and numerous pets. In January, 2014 she began her journey towards healing and communicating with spirit world. This began when she signed up for her first reiki class knowing that she has always been connected but not realizing the gift she was about to open up. Today, she is an Usui Reiki Master and animal communicator/healer, among other things. While she continued to learn through her journey working with other master teachers, she asked to be sent a teacher that would help her build her confidence in mediumship and psychic abilities. At this time she found Lillian Suarez, and her journey, yet again, took another path. Today, Natalie is a co-owner of a healing business in Suffern, NY where she holds workshops, healing sessions, reiki certification courses, readings, and many more. Most of all, Natalie enjoys teaching her children (also, light-workers) all that she has learned, along with volunteering, fostering and rescuing homeless animals. As Natalie continues on her journey, her hope and prayers are that she can continue to help and teach those who come in her path and spread the love, peace and joy.

After storming home to be declared the sole Survivor of the 29th season of San Juan Del Sur, Natalie Anderson sat down with Ben to talk about whether or not she is used to being introduced as 'the winner of Survivor', how confident she was going into FTC that she was going to win, just what would've happened had Jeremy not been blindsided, her sisters reaction to finding out she had gone far in the game, whether or not playing Survivor is 'easy' compared to The Amazing Race and whether she would rather return to play Survivor or The Amazing Race again!
