It's a big ole' MLM And others are holding on to dear life to their old school sales & marketing tactics What recession? ANYONE can manifest millions! The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle. I'm so excited to introduce this love filled, wise and beautiful soul who I've had the privilege of learning from over the last three years. In this deep and poignant episode, Nisha talks about how magic wove its way into her life through the serendipitous arrival of teachers, who arrived in the shape of friends, parents of friends, neighbouring yoga teachers and more. She talks about the relationship between trauma and wisdom and how this shapes our intuition. We also explore the importance of reverent, generous and gratitude-centred practices of devotion to nature, and she explains her beautiful understanding of the ecology of leadership. Nisha's energy is powerful, gentle, full of love, and oh so beautiful. Her wisdom is deep, and her truth critical in today's world. This is not an episode you want to miss. Enjoy! Upcoming Ceremonial Workshop: RISE On Friday October 29, I'll be hosting RISE, a Ceremonial Workshop curated for women who are ready to detox from the patriarchal narratives that have made their way into our pathways, and step into the truth & power of the woman they were born to be. Today's episode wraps up the journey I have been through to become the Licensed Psychologist I am today and where my life has taken me on this continuous path of growth and evolution. I invite you to listen to this episode as I share some of the memories of leaving my agency work continuing on to the beginning of starting my private practice, until today. Many emotions unravel as I talk about all the things that lead me to this moment; from reinventing how to operate my business, to trusting my gut and connecting to my inner calling, to focusing on the things that really give me joy by recognizing my season in life and learning how to move forward this way. Through this journey I had to recognize and deal with things that you might relate to like: Imposter syndrome feelings from charging money. Struggling as a business owner, because I don't have an entrepreneur background or example in my family. Living on a go-go mentality was quickly making me feel burnout to make up for all the things I felt I needed to accomplish. I share some things that have helped me in this evolution and although it's still a work in progress it has definitely helped me have a more balanced work/family life. Recognizing my strengths and focusing on my expertise Surrounding myself with people and learning to rely on their ability to help me accomplish my goals. To which I have to say, I am very grateful for my team! Anna Olvina, my graphic designer and SM expert, Susana Romero my Podcast Audio editor, and my Podcast producer; Rossana Garcia-Stella. Joining mastermind programs like Kate Northrup's and Nisha Moodley's. Integrating systems and automatization of the programs I use for my practice and for the podcast. Some of these are; Calendly, Kajabi, Simple Practice. Not following every idea or impulse, learning to identify the ones that would really work with my season of life. WHERE ARE YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY? CAN YOU IDENTIFY YOUR SEASON OF LIFE? MY HOPE FOR YOU IS THAT YOU CAN! To learn more about the coaching program coming in the Fall (starting October) please check it out HERE! Today begins a brand new season of Unforgettable! A season dedicated to taking us back to the foundations of messaging. Starting with… What is messaging, really? Believe me, I’ve heard a lot of myths and misunderstandings in the past several years I’ve been leading messaging workshops and Masterminds! That it’s all about wordsmithing or dialing in your elevator pitch. That there’s a “right” way to do it — following formulas and scripts that work for others. That it’s about selling at all costs and has to feel icky or robotic to be successful. But when you’re a sensitive Messenger who cares deeply, values-based messaging is where your power lies. Because there’s a difference between simply following copywriting rules and marketing tactics and messaging according to your integrity. So, fresh on the heels of the Speaking to What Matters series, it’s time to re-define what messaging really is. We start with today’s episode, where you’ll learn the difference between core message and messaging plus how to reset how you think about messaging and start crafting messaging that’s in alignment with your values. You’ll learn Listen in. Deeper support from me: Join the FREE 5-day Message Clarity Challenge to cut through the noise and calls in your people…without having to change who you are. Starts March 22nd, 2021! What’s your Messenger Archetype? Take the quiz. My Messenger Mastermind is an intimate circle of up to 6 women coaches & leaders who want to feel solid, confident & consistent in their messaging and grow a movement that matters ~ both to the world and to their business’ bottom line. Closing out Speaking to What Matters: Conversations on Messaging for a More Just World, here is my personal debrief with specific aha moments and learnings I took away from each leader about how to show up for social justice in your messaging. Listen in. A Few Takeaways: You can’t slap up new inclusive messaging on your website and expect more diverse clients to come. Messaging is the end point after you’ve done the internal work and learning. (Hat tip to convos with Cher Hale and Trudi Lebron.) Be discerning. There’s no formula for knowing when to pass the mic / when to speak up / what to say / how to do any of this. (HT Erica Courdae and Nisha Moodley.) Be really clear, specific and explicit about who your work is for. More words vs collapsing people into narrow labels for the sake of tidy marketing. (HT Kelly Diels and Trudi Lebron.) Slow down. Harm often happens when we’re moving so fast and not taking time to be intentional and present and see the actual humans in front of us. (HT Tamala Poljak, Nisha Moodley, and Trudi Lebron.) Values-based marketing is when you attract people who don’t just have the problem you solve but who share the same values. (HT Trudi Lebron and Kelly Diels.) It’s not about being an “expert,” it’s about being a leader. And being a leader is more about how you show up than about doing it perfectly or right. (HT Nisha Moodley, Tamala Poljak and Erica Courdae.) Deeper support from me: What’s your Messenger Archetype? Take the quiz. We’re all continually learning & navigating how to share in these times which are highly polarized and where a lot of our collective trauma is at the surface. As my guest today, Nisha Moodley, points out, we’re just at the beginning of learning how to be together on the internet. And we’re unlearning + relearning how to do it in a different, more generative way. Nisha is an Integrative Leadership Coach who’s been supporting women to liberate their leadership and weave their gifts in service of our shared vision for the past 10 years. With an Indian father who escaped apartheid in South Africa and a mother who traveled around the world consulting with the UN on democratic elections, she grew up having justice-oriented conversations at the dinner table. This can be a scary time to share our ideas, thoughts, hearts and work online, especially if we are empaths, highly sensitive, or naturally more private or quiet. And also, with the rush of social media and online business training ingrained into us, it can be easy to unintentionally co-opt or capitalize on important issues without meaning to. In this convo, we dive into how to share in a way that is intentional and sensitive to big traumatic world events…even if you’re in the middle of a launch. Listen in. Nisha and I talk about The importance of holding the framework of “we’re learning” so we don’t get attached to “how do I do it RIGHT” How people are willing to give one another more grace when we’re met with genuine openness, receptivity and humility The blurry line between sharing our experiences and centering our own experiences What it means to be willing to “learn in public” for those of us who have an online business or share parts of our lives and work online How can we slow down, come into our humanity, and connect with what is happening and who it’s happening to? Why using your voice requires you to face your internal perfectionism and attachment to being seen as right or good Deeper support from me: What’s your Messenger Archetype? Take the quiz. Here we are, at the first episode of Speaking to What Matters: Conversations on Messaging for a More Just World. It’s my hope that this series of informal, real conversations with social justice leaders brings you at least one shift, aha moment, or breakthrough in how you want to show up. Here’s where we’ll be going & who we’ll be learning from: [171] Messaging For a More Just World [172] Being an Imperfect Ally…When You’re a Sensitive Soul with Erica Courdae [173] Evolving Your Work to Have a Social Justice Lens with Cher Hale [174 Feminist Marketing & Copy that Doesn’t Oppress with Kelly Diels [175] Is My Niche Excluding Marginalized People? With Trudi Lebron [176] CIS- & Hetero-Normativity in Our Leadership with Tamala Poljak [177] Speaking About Issues Without Co-Opting Them to “Sell” with Nisha Moodley [178] What I Learned From 6 Social Justice Leaders About Messaging Today’s episode is our starting place, setting the foundation to lean into this series. In all honesty, I sat for a while with whether to share my personal experiences of privilege and fragility. (Think sleepless nights debating whether to re-record this episode.) I don’t want to center my own experience. But I also want to bring awareness to the layers of blindness we have when we posess dominant identities – white, CIS, hetero, able-bodied, medium-sized, middle class, youthful-looking. Because most of us have at least one dominant identity which means most of us have certain, often invisible (to us), privileges that go along with that identity. Even as well-meaning folks. I want to normalize the feelings of discomfort that go along with this so that we can begin to TURN TOWARDS them rather than hiding from them and staying silent. So I left this episode as-is. An imperfect, messy, honest, quick chat with you before diving into conversations with six smart, insightful leaders. (Starting tomorrow!) Part personal, part inspirational. Listen in. Patriarchy tells you that you’re not good enough. Capitalism says you’re not educated enough. These societal narratives are a lie - but they could be holding you back from being the leader that your community deserves. On today’s episode, I talk with beautiful soul and integrative leadership coach Nisha Moodley about how to change the conversation around leadership so you can embrace who you are and become the revolutionary leader you are truly capable of being. We dive into: What integrative leadership really means and how she came to focus on leadership in her practice The importance of embracing pleasure instead of restriction What holds a lot of folks back from becoming revolutionary leaders Why you should NOT be relating self worth and boundaries with caring less for your people The MOST IMPORTANT thing your leadership has to have to be truly revolutionary What you need to release to embrace the role of leader in your life The harm of internalized hierarchies of dominance and learning to resist them Why Nisha weaves the idea of devotion into her brand And so many more gems! In this tender episode of Belonging, I'm sharing the story of the birth of my daughter, Atlas. To help me piece together all that happened (because parts are already beginning to fade and other parts exist for me outside of time and space), my dear friend and new doula who was with me through the whole process, Nisha Moodley, joined me to guide us through the conversation. Together, we weave the story of what happened over the course of my 48+ hour labor — sharing moments of celebration, moments of grief and fear, and moments that happened outside of my awareness. As I share with Nisha, it's helpful to be witnessed in my own processing of this birth experience. It's something I'll be processing forever and a story I will want to tell again and again. It’s Day 5 of the Mentor Masterclass Holiday Challenge Podcast! Today’s episode is near and dear to my heart because I get to introduce someone who is very special in my life – my FIRST personal mentor, Nisha Moodley. Danielle LaPorte, (who you’ll meet in a few days in the challenge), author of The Desire Map, says, “Nisha brings a feminine twist to everything she teaches and touches — an inclusive, sensual kind of wisdom that’s just what we need to round out our ambitions.” Nisha’s approach is based on her belief that the world will be set free by women who are ALREADY FREE themselves, and that sisterhood is the key to women helping other women become free. Nisha is also one of the core mentors inside my signature coach training program, Mentor Masterclass. Her challenge is perfect for today because it’s a good example of the huge impact mentors can make in our lives. Since they’re already doing things we’d like to be doing, mentors are powerful role models because they make it easier for us to see a clear picture of what we want to create in our lives. And today Nisha not only imparts her wisdom (and gives us a challenge you won’t want to miss. It’s one of the most successful business and brand building tools I’ve ever learned!) but is shining a light on what we sometimes gloss over during the holidays: that there can be both wonderful and negative emotions within us—and that it’s okay. All set to learn more? Let’s go — listen in now! How to Play Full-Out 1. Listen to the podcast episode Listen to today’s episode and follow the instructions to do your challenge activity. Each challenge is a fun and easy way to practice what you learn in the episode, while having some holiday fun inside our supportive community of coaches and mentors at the same time. 2. Share & Win Prizes Follow the instructions and then share on Instagram, or Facebook if you do not have an Instagram using the tags #MMHolidayChallenge @mentor.masterclass and @jeannine.yoder. Tag Nisha, too! She’s @NishaMoodley on Instagram and Facebook. Click here to follow us NOW on Instagram @jeannine.yoder and @mentor.masterclass. Some podcasts may mention an old Instagram or Twitter page, but this year we’re focused on using Instagram and these pages to track your sharing and to give out prizes. This is also the best place to make sure I personally see what you post. We’re tracking tags and shares, so the more you play, the more chances you have to win prizes and a potential scholarship to join my signature program Mentor Masterclass. Plus Instagram is one of the best places to engage with like-minded powerful women and start to create a brand as a coach, let’s use this challenge as a way to get you comfortable being seen and to grow your following on social media! 3. Reflect & Renew What would it feel like if you were serving your future clients and interacting with your friends and family from that “future” version of you? What would life look like if you were clear and focused on taking steps toward your North Star, daily? How would your life be different if you had a strong why and calling for how you spent your time and the way you made money? 4. Earn a Full or Partial Scholarship to Mentor Masterclass If you’d like to be considered for a full or partial scholarship to Mentor Masterclass, download a copy of the Holiday Challenge Reflection & Support Guide (or “workbook”) here. To be considered for the full or partial scholarship, follow the instructions on the workbook information page. Make sure to email your completed workbook between Sunday, December 15 and Wednesday, December 18. (The deadline to enter is 5pm ET on Wednesday, December 18.) I asked Nisha to join me today to talk about belonging in community. It's a big topic, but Nisha and I are in the same community. We used to live down the street from each other and we are in a circle of women that gather each month under the new moon. We’ve seen each other grow and change over the years, but have both been committed to creating meaningful and lasting community—no matter how hard and uncomfortable it can be. And, it turns out, it can be pretty uncomfortable to create healthy relationships, and it’s totally worth it. In our conversation, Nisha and I talk about what it means to be deep friends, how we can be more inclusive in our circles, how we can get our needs met in community, the collective vision of the village and how we can get back to that, how to navigate conflict in friendship and community, the importance of making agreements, and her journey into motherhood and how our current system doesn’t support mothers very well. Finally, my infamous mentor, Nisha Moodley joins me for an intriguing discussion about personal sovereignty and power!Sovereignty is a leadership quality I learned about through Nisha's program, Soul of Leadership, and HOLY GUACAMOLE is it powerful! It's empowered me to have healthier boundaries at work and at home, show up in a more powerful way for my clients and loved ones, and has helped me recognize my own personal power. As Nisha discusses the ways power has been distorted by society and its systems, she calls us back to true, authentic power — the kind that can't be taken away and that truly sets us free. No matter which way you slice it, this conversation is important and has the ability to true catalyze a change in perspective.Nisha is opening enrollment for her course, Soul of Leadership, is this month. I HIGHLY recommend it, not because I get paid or rewarded to (I don't) but because I believe in it. It's truly changed my life. I am not sure how it's taken me four years to get my dear friend Nisha Moodley on the podcast, but I'm grateful for the divine timing and the depth, beauty and importance woven through this conversation. Nisha's big truth was that community care is a huge aspect of our path forward. We talked about how our understanding of what we need in community has changed, what exactly community care is, what togetherness and our ability to be real with each other looks like, as well as the layers of complexity to all of this. We explored the vulnerability in asking for what you need and receiving it, especially when complex relationship dynamics are present, and how we create space for ourselves and others. We touched on restorative justice, when talking is a useful action and when it's not, the power in paradox and when honest self-reflection is needed. It's a juicy, listen more than once type of episode. She shared that it was SO helpful for her in the “early days” of her business (the first few years) to learn as MUCH as she possibly could. She took tons of courses and absorbed as much info as possible, including B-School and Creating Fame. Cailen also talked about working as a freelancer and having “bridge jobs,” which is basically another way of saying… temporary work you do while you’re building up your future ideal income from your creative pursuits or business. But at some point, she recognized that in order to make a SHIFT, it was necessary to hire more support. She decided to work with Nisha Moodley as a coach, and making that decision and investment was the turning point for her business. We also talked about…. How she uses The Desire Map every year to get clear on how she wants to feel FIRST, and then set intentions based on those feelings after. #069 — The Power of Sisterhood Nisha Moodley came to understand the power of sisterhood by accident. She started a group coaching program simply because she was out of one-on-one slots and something magical happened: The women involved experienced profound, lasting transformation. Since then, Nisha’s work has come to focus on the power of women in groups to create a nourishing container that supports growth and expansion—a place of sensitivity, resilience, and compassion where women can rise in leadership. Today, Nisha joins me to explain how she facilitates connection with groups of women, both in-person and online. She shares her pregnancy and parenting journey, including the messy experience of dealing with a lot of repressed anger and what it taught her about her values. I ask Nisha how her business has changed now that she’s a parent, and she offers insight around society’s responsibility to take care of mothers. Listen in for Nisha’s take on the power of sisterhood to create a safe space for truth! I made a pretty big decision this weekend to end my podcasting journey, without any fanfare or second guessing. It dawned on me that I have been podcasting for 7 years. Seven freaking years of putting out episodes! What started out as monthly back on May 16, 2011, turned into twice a month around 2012 and at at the end of 2013 became weekly.By 2015 I'd decided to up my game and go twice weekly, with one interview one 'Fresh in Fifteen' 15 minute show with my own tips.In august 2016 I hit 1 Million Downloads which was a pretty awesome achievement for me and a show of wonderful support from listeners and the Suitcase Entrepreneur community. As I wrote in that article:I started my podcast in 2011 on May 16th. I actually had to look that date up as I couldn’t remember! My first guest was the lovely Colleen Wainwright from Communicatrix and the interview (from my side at least) was pretty mediocre. You can check it out here.Episode 4, I convinced Laura Roeder to talk about The Art of Not Doing Everything Yourself. From there, I was off and running. At it's peak 40,000 ‘Freedomists’ tuned in from all over the world, every month. To date it has over 1.8 million downloads which blows my mind.I know many of my peers have podcasts that do that in a few months, but I'm proud of that result plus 200+ five-star reviews. In late 2013 the podcast was nominated and made a Top 10 Finalist in the Business Category at the Podcast Awards and it consistently ranked in the Top 100 category for Business in iTunes.Weekly interviews with successful entrepreneurs and digital nomads included Michael Hyatt, Amy Portereld, Pam Slim, Chris Guillebeau, Pat Flynn, Jaime Masters, Chris Ducker, Jill and Josh Stanton, Josh Turner, Nisha Moodley, Mark Manson, Nick Loper and Denise Duffield-Thomas to name but a few.Podcasting BenefitsA few other valid points I made in that article:I love podcasting – I enjoy it and it works for my natural talents – I like to talk a lot and I like to interview all types of people, treat it like a casual conversation, and bring out the best in them so they can share their stories far and wideIt’s a fantastic community building tool – I love my Freedomists who listen in every week and then meet me in person to tell me how much they enjoy the show – and that I sound exactly like I do on my podcast. Their engagement and feedback makes my day. It’s a fantastic business marketing tool – I’ve indirectly traced more revenue thanks to listeners telling me that they signed up to a program or a retreat or a mastermind because of hearing me talk about it on my podcast. I’ve also increased my list thanks to people who opted in to get my podcast bonus guides. It’s an excellent way to engage with and partner with sponsors – I’ve been fortunate to have a host of amazing sponsors over the years like 99Designs, Hostgator, Upwork, Skross and more. Some I approached, others approached me and it’s been a brilliant source of revenue to not only fund the costs of running a podcast but as a revenue stream all in itself.Podcasting RealitiesYou have to go all in, or not at all.Sure you can start out like I did, with my laptop, Skype and no fancy microphone and do just fine, but if you want to be top of class you need to up your game as you grow.I'm talking great equipment - I use the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder and an external Schuh Microphone.I outsourced editing within the first month knowing this wasn't where I wanted to spend my time. And it was a brilliant investment.Over time as I've learned more and done more with my podcast, it's meant hiring more people to help with show notes, content upgrades, formatting, images and hosting. Our SOP (standard operating procedure) for editing and producing a podcast - which is also a full Asana template for our team now, is impressive and something I'm so proud we've built. But it sure does take time, effort and money.I asked Rolly, who's been my amazing podcast editor since January 2014, to total his hours worked on my podcast and it's approximately 1,200 hours to date!Batching recording my podcasts in advance has helped a great deal too, meaning you can take time off, go on holiday or simply not worry about scrambling last minute to get an episode out...which has happened a lot to be fair!Sponsors were a big part of helping out with covering the considerable costs of running a podcast, which I think a lot of people starting out underestimate. To date I've earned over US$100,000 in sponsorships. That is amazing in itself, as are the relationships you forge with the sponsors.Podcast Guests Really Make a Great ShowI've been privileged to interview some amazing guests when it was the Suitcase Entrepreneur and these have made a huge difference to the quality of my shows, my reach and also credibility. While I never assumed those I interviewed would share my show (although many did), just being able to put their name as a guest on your show gave you instant kudos.I also loved interviewing those folks who were up and coming or just doing really cool stuff but were not 'big names' or influencers, because frankly they were in the thick of it all and told it as it really was.Their stories resonated even more with my listeners, because they could relate. Here are the TOP ranked Suitcase Entrepreneur Podcasts:[TSE 55] Master the Art of Being a Professional Speaker and Author with Hugh Culver[TSE 92] How to Balance Multiple Projects and Build Your Email List with Nathalie Lussier[TSE 91] How to Profit from Your Passion and Publish Multiple Books with Farnoosh Brock[TSE 98] Sell Yourself without Selling Out; How to Get More Clients with Matthew Kimberley[TSE 40] Own Less and Live More by Becoming a Minimalist with Joshua Becker[TSE 44] How Pat Flynn Makes $50K a Month from Blogging, Niche Sites and Being Nice[TSE 39] Brand Building Using Your Sassy Personality And F-Bombs With Ashley Ambirge[TSE 96] How to Be Social Media Savvy with Scott Stratten[TSE 99] How to Raise Your Family, Live Your Dream and See the World with Greg DenningI finished my Suitcase Entrepreneur interview series on Episode 300 and that felt awesome.Switching to a New Podcast FormatIn January 2017 I switched over to a narrative style format and rebranded to Quest for Freedom when I also switched over to posting more on this new website and moving away from The Suitcase Entrepreneur.I'd fallen in love with this format after listening to Startup by Gimlet Media and loving the storytelling and seasonal aspect of their podcasts.Of course they had built an entire company to produce quality podcasts and had a whole team of editors, journalists and writers behind them but I figured I could do my own version and I was a bit 'over' the interview format that so many people do.In April 2016 I went on my sabbatical and took a three month break from all content creation and my business. This didn't affect things too much but I did quite like the break from having to come up with themes for the season and all the research.Turns out narrative podcasts by yourself are much more work than interviewing fab people!I navigated away from seasonal podcasts to more topical themes so mindset, meditation, productivity etc. This helped me get my head around what to focus on, otherwise I could talk on all sorts of topics!Eps 36 How to master your timeEps 37 Starting an Ecommerce Site From ScratchEps 38 A powerful morning routineEps 39 Why money alone won't bring you happinessEps 42 The Art of Decluttering Your MindLosing My Podcast MojoPost my sabbatical was, incidentally, also around the time I realized my enthusiasm and desire to produce high quality content for free (but at my investment) week in and week out was waning. And so it leads me to this moment in time, when I can quite happily walk away from seven years of committing to this amazing medium that has brought me so much joy, happiness and personal growth. It's also brought me new friends, connections and insights with incredible entrepreneurs and taught me a level of work ethic and discipline like batching and organizing well ahead of time, that's permeated every aspect of my business. It's been profitable and pleasurable. For now though, I'm looking forward to listening to other people's podcasts and appreciating just what goes into theirs. At some point in the future I have ideas for new and more targeted shows, but for now I'm hanging up my podcast boots with gratitude to all my listeners and supporters who made me want to turn up for 7 years and hit publish. The great news is you can forever listen to the 48 Episodes of Quest for Freedom right here, the first 300 Episodes on the Suitcase Entrepreneur here. While she admits she's always been a "woman's woman," Nisha Moodley admits that her own Heroine's Journey really began when she fully took a stand for sisterhood. When faced with a divorce, followed by the dissolution of a very deep and meaningful relationship, she recognized just how much she had been deriving her sense of wholeness from men. Nisha's devastation not only led her to surrender in the lap of her girlfriends but it also initiated her into the process of "choosing herself" and cultivating her own intrinsic wholeness. Through this, Nisha learned to partner with challenging emotions as her greatest allies. This allowed her to transform heartache into one of her life's greatest gifts. Tune into our sisterly conversation to discover the tools to help you also "choose yourself." Nisha Moodley is a Women’s Leadership Coach and the founder of Global Sisterhood Day.
