Once you've broken your couple up, how do you bring them back together? With a grand romantic gesture, of course. But in the world of grand romantic gestures, how grand is too grand? How romantic is too romantic? When Mark's mad lib game doesn't quite help, the hosts bring in a true romantic comedy MVP: writer and director Ol Parker (Ticket to Paradise, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). They're just three comedians, standing in front of a Hollywood pro, asking him to help them finish their rom-com.
SEASON FINALE! MAMMA MIA & MAMMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN! We have watched Meryl Streep movies for nearly six months. Did we learn anything? Great question! Listen and find out with our season finale featuring ALL of your favorite ABBA songs X2 along with songs you probably weren't familiar with in the second Mamma Mia film. MAMMA MIA (2008) is a jukebox musical adapted from the stage production of the same name. Phyllidia Lloyd directs, as she did on stage (and will direct Streep again to an Oscar a few years later in The Iron Lady, covered on our season premiere). It's a vacation movie, it's a movie meant to make people smile. It's pretty silly but it works for most of the hosts. One of our hosts hates musicals, however, and hated this movie. Which one? Grumple McSourpuss! MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN (2018) took a decade to get made because they couldn't figure out a tenuous narrative on which they could hang a bunch of songs onto until screenwriter Richard Curtis' daughter told him they should do The Godfather II plot; a child and their parent at the same time in their lives. A prequel and a sequel all in one! It also means that Meryl Streep's character is dead when the sequel begins - cool or yuck?Amanda Seyfried as Streep's daughter takes over in the sequel portion and Lily James plays young Streep, whose eyes apparently change color like a puppy between the olden times and the 2008 original. Ol Parker directs and that is apparently his real name unless Ol is his middle name and Good is his first. Do we like it? Is it possibly better than the original? STREEP WRAP-UP: Favorite lists, least favorite lists, a re-litigation on the lack of any merits whatsoever on She-Devil and much, much more. Ken, Jack and Thomas talk about Streep one last time with season-long guest Andi, the best, who bids farewell to ever talking movies with us again this episode. Laughter. Tears. Fade Out. The End (until the next episode). In a special episode of the Film Stories podcast, Simon is joined by writer and director Ol Parker, with the pair chatting about his latest film, Ticket To Paradise. They look at how the film came together, and the challenges of making a film led by two major movie stars. Parker also candidly discusses the response to the movie, and the less than stellar critical response to it. He also talks about further projects, and what may lie ahead.Ticket To Paradise is available on demand, and on DVD and Blu-ray, now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We were at the premiere of Ticket to Paradise, a film about a divorced couple doing whatever they can to prevent their daughter from getting married, which of course, leads to a lot of shenanigans and chaos. This romantic comedy brings together a fantastic cast, including George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Kaitlyn Dever, Billie Lourd, and Ol Parker. All were at the premiere to celebrate, including both Clooney and Roberts, who were all laughs and jokes during our interview. Clooney said they are just an old couple of exes who are mad at each other, while Roberts admitted the two couldn't seem to give a straight answer. However, things got sentimental when the two discussed what it's like working together and their immense love for each other. Dever, Lourd, and Parker all mention the massive impact of working with Roberts and Clooney -- and what they hope fans take away from the film. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Marianna Randazzo Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: A man and his ex-wife race to Bali, Indonesia, to stop their daughter from marrying a seaweed farmer. As they desperately try to sabotage the wedding, the bickering duo soon finds themselves rekindling old feelings that once made them happy together. *Ticket to Paradise will be released in theaters on October 21, 2022. After, the two discuss Parker's previous film, 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' and they try to pick their favorite character from the franchise using a March Madness-style bracket. Host: Kaveh Jalinous. Special Guest: Leily Jalinous.

Phyllida Lloyd's 2008 film Mamma Mia! was a box-office sensation - so why are we vaulting straight over it to review its 2018 sequel? A lot of reasons, as Mark and Graham discover on this week's episode of Pop Screen. Beginning with an absolutely gonzo rendition of When I Kissed the Teacher, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again takes plenty of big, weird chances, not least the decision to pattern its plot structure on The Godfather Part II. This new ambition can only be ascribed to a change of writer and director, the latter post filled by Ol Parker, the former by Richard Curtis, who it would be fair to say Mark and Graham have priors with. We discuss how his sensibility gels with the Mamma Mia! cinematic universe, the way the film simultaneously celebrates and lampoons its predecessor, and the ever-vexed question of whether men can sing. As well as running this podcast, we also run a struggling restaurant on an imaginary Greek island, so we'd appreciate your Patreon donations. Providing a sequel for one of the highest grossing and most loved live-action musicals of all-time is a terrifying challenge by any reckoning, so we think you might be surprised how humble and down to earth the man that was charged with doing so is. Ol Parker wrote and directed Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and has done a fine job too. As well as managing an all-star cast including Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Cher, he also had the not insignificant problem of melding all those iconic songs with the wonderful Anne Dudley's score. Thankfully, Benny and Bjorn from ABBA were on hand to help … The reason we're coming to you a little later than normal is because Anne and Mamma Mia music supervisor Becky Bentham have been moving heaven and earth to provide us with exclusive cues from the film. So as well as plenty of sing-along classics, you'll be hearing Anne's score too.
Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie are a father and daughter living by choice in a Portland, Oregon park and trying to avoid detection in director and co-writer Debra Granik’s LEAVE NO TRACE.
