In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, Elise, Dan, and Manny tackle the high-octane thrills of Live Free or Die Hard, the fourth installment in the iconic action franchise starring Bruce Willis as the indomitable John McClane. The group dives headfirst into the film's ambitious attempt to modernize the series, as McClane takes on cyber-terrorists in a plot that blends traditional action with tech-savvy chaos. While opinions differ on whether this sequel captures the essence of the original films, the hosts agree that Willis's performance as McClane remains as entertaining and sharp as ever. Nick leads the discussion with a nostalgic look at how Live Free or Die Hard pays homage to McClane's classic grit while also taking big swings with more elaborate action sequences. Anthony is quick to highlight the sheer scale of the movie's set pieces, from an explosive car chase to the now-infamous fighter jet showdown. Elise shares her thoughts on how McClane's dynamic with Justin Long's hacker character adds a fresh layer of humor and heart to the film, though she admits that the shift toward a more tech-focused plot slightly detracts from the grounded feel of earlier entries. Dan and Manny chime in with their takes on the villains, led by Timothy Olyphant as the cold and calculated cyber-criminal Thomas Gabriel. Dan argues that while Olyphant delivers a solid performance, Gabriel lacks the charisma and memorable flair of past Die Hard antagonists. Manny, on the other hand, defends the film's attempt to modernize the franchise by pitting McClane against a new kind of threat, praising the way it tests McClane's old-school methods in a rapidly evolving world. The hosts also delve into the film's visual effects and the balance between practical stunts and CGI, debating whether it enhances or detracts from the movie's action-packed charm. In the end, the group weighs the film's rewatchability, with split opinions on how well Live Free or Die Hard holds up compared to its predecessors. While Nick and Anthony praise its high-energy pacing and Willis's enduring appeal, Elise and Dan express some reservations about the film's over-the-top moments and tonal shifts. Manny ultimately suggests that, while it's not a perfect sequel, it's still a fun ride for fans of the franchise and action enthusiasts alike. Together, the hosts agree that Live Free or Die Hard may not be the definitive Die Hard experience, but it still delivers enough thrills to make it a worthwhile rewatch.   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0337978/

Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

The Month of Mark from Minneapolis enters its Christmas phase with the 1999 crime comedy "Go." Or, as we like to call it, "MTV Magnolia." While Gene praises the film's optimistic attitude toward drug use, he struggles with painful memories of how trivia failed to make him popular. Ash compares director Doug Liman to Quentin Tarantino, and Dick tries to convince his co-hosts that being middle-aged is cooler than being young and dumb. "Go" provided the Shat Crew with plenty to discuss, including Timothy Olyphant as a sexy drug dealer, unexpected vehicular violence, strip clubs after threesomes, '90s soundtracks, hiding bodies and where to shoot an Englishman. As the "Something Pretty" podcast concludes its in-depth exploration of the "Deadwood" series, the journey is far from over. Before delving into "Deadwood: The Movie," the podcast plans to take a detour to cover a few significant and related projects that emerged in the decade between the end of the series and the release of the movie. These podcasts will be available in full at our Patreon website. Please consider joining. Our first topic: 2007's "Hitman", starring Seth Bullock himself!"Hitman," released in 2007, is an action-thriller film based on the popular video game series of the same name. The film features Timothy Olyphant, known for his role as Sheriff Seth Bullock in "Deadwood," in the lead role as Agent 47. This character is a mysterious and elite assassin known for his precision, skill, and the iconic barcode tattooed on the back of his head. The movie revolves around Agent 47, who becomes embroiled in a political conspiracy and finds himself pursued by both Interpol and the Russian military as he treks across Eastern Europe. The plot thickens with twists and turns, as 47 tries to unravel the conspiracy while dealing with moral dilemmas and his own enigmatic identity.Regarding Timothy Olyphant's involvement in "Hitman," it's noteworthy that he accepted this role under pressing circumstances. Following the cancellation of "Deadwood" in 2006, Olyphant found himself in a financially challenging situation, having made significant investments in real estate. Consequently, Olyphant took on the role of Agent 47 in "Hitman," a movie he reportedly disliked, as a means to stabilize his finances. Fortunately, "Justified" wouldn't be that far off.If you enjoyed this short clip, please consider supporting the show via our Patreon. Timothy Olyphant has been a regular presence on various TV shows every single year dating back to Damages in 2009, before the original Justified. And yet, it feels significant that he's in no less than three new series this year. The Nose already covered the first, Daisy Jones & the Six. This week, we catch up with the other two: Full Circle is a Max Original limited series written and created by Ed Solomon and photographed, edited, and directed by Steven Soderbergh. Here's Warner Bros.'s logline: “An investigation into a botched kidnapping uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City.” It stars an ensemble cast that includes Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Timothy Olyphant, CCH Pounder, and Dennis Quaid. And: Justified: City Primeval is an FX limited series continuation of Justified, which ended in 2015 after six seasons and 78 episodes. It is based on the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroitand short story “Fire in the Hole.” Olyphant reprises his role as U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 21, 2023.  It's a “Barbie” world this weekend with the really funny eponymously-named movie, complete with colorful sets and just about every perspective on Barbie playfully presented at some point. Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling are outstanding as the titular Barbie and her boyfriend Ken in a surprisingly moving movie about the plastic doll. But we can't forget the second portion of the "Barbenheimer" double feature; Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer” tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and much more than just the creation of the first atomic bomb. There is also the new comedy from JK Studios (the original Studio C cast) called “Go West,” which is an enjoyable comedy to prepare for Pioneer Day here in Utah. For sports fans, there are entertaining documentaries available to stream: one about Stephen Curry called "Stephen Curry: Underrated” on Apple TV+, and one about Wilt Chamberlain called "Goliath" on Paramount+. Also streaming is the comedy “They Cloned Tyrone” on Netflix, and the return of Timothy Olyphant's character Raylan Givens with "Justified: City Primeval" on Hulu.  Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Brilliant opinions and commentary on all things geek, but surprising knowledge and witty arguments over pop culture, Star Trek, MARVEL vs. DC, and a wide range of movies, TV shows, and more. The world out there is a brutal place. If you have a hankering for some of the rough justice you remember from old-school lawman Raylan Givens – you're in luck. Justified: City Primeval is about to drop on FX starring the same Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), we all came to know and love in the six seasons of the hit-show Justified. His hair has more sliver streaks, partly due to age but also due to worrying about his precocious 15-year-old daughter Willa (played by Olyphant's real-life daughter Vivian), in this thrilling 8-episode limited series. I talked with showrunner Michael Dinner about evolving Elmore Leonard's beloved lead character in this spinoff that's set in the mean streets of Detroit, while staying true to the risk-taking Raylan who's not afraid to get his hands dirty in the hollers of Kentucky. Now the father of a teenaged girl, Raylan's priorities have shifted – so will he still reach for his gun with the same ease as before? “In a way, this is the second chapter of his life,” says Dinner. “His first chapter is, ‘You can't go home again.' We pick him up 8 or 10 years later, he's divorced, he has a daughter. I look at the work in these 8 episodes and it's more adult and I feel he's made another step – not the actor, but the character. So, I think it's interesting to look at it with that kind of perspective, that it is a character who is further down the road.” Dinner also shares his advice for creating characters who ignite conflict and push each other's buttons in ways that help sustain a show over time and engage the audience in deeper ways. Also, I ask the question, who is Raylan Givens without Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins), and if we might see Boyd Crowder anytime soon. Dinner's answer may surprise you! Click to hear more from our podcast with Dinner about the new limited series Justified: City Primeval. Hear more in Final Draft's Write On podcast.  Justified: City Primeval comes to FX on July 18.

Why does an episode that has nothing to do with Timothy Olyphant have his name in the title? Just one of the many questions Bryn and Sarah have as we discuss this two-part episode, which is likely really called Exodus pt. 1.

Sit down and buckle up as we pierce the bubble of the Nicolas Cage Cinematic Universe with “Gone in 60 Seconds,” brought to us by this week's guest, Justin Klugh. It's a classic slice of early-aughts that, despite being a car-centric film, does not appear to have been made by “car porn enthusiasts.” We manage to get references to everyone from Conan O'Brien to Bryce Harper squeezed into this bad boy, which may help explain its longest-episode-yet run time. Apologies to “Galaxy Quest,” which I misnamed late in the pod, while everyone owes an apology to Frances Fisher for her lack of screen time. Enjoy!
