Episode Summary:John Philip Newell is best described as “a wandering teacher with the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar.” Formerly the Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, John Philip joined me from his home in Edinburgh to offer a new, yet ancient way forward in a time when the empire has once again wedded and bedded Christianity.Long before the colonizing forces of imperial Christianity made their way to the British Isles, an indigenous form of spirituality nourished those sacred souls living in the borderlands of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Celts believed divinity pervaded every aspect of life. There was no distinction between secular and sacred, human and divine. The Celtic vision of the world is essentially sacramental, perceiving God's presence in ordinary things like rocks, forests, springs, groves, hills, and meadows. “The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common,” writes Esther De Waal. For them, the natural world is the container of the sacred and a gateway to the luminous—the holy intersection between mortals and the supernatural. These tribes bewildered the Roman church because they were relational rather than rational, inspirational rather than institutional, and indigenous instead of imperial. In this modern age, when we find ourselves divorced from the natural world, addicted to technology, controlled by institutional religion, and victims of an empire of our own making, there is a great deal to learn from the ancient Celts. We need nothing less than a reclamation of our humanity, a rekindling of the Beltaine Fire burning in every human heart. Most of us are still reeling from the recent presidential election. The dark forces of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and white supremacy are chronically ingrained in the highest levels of government, blessed and absolved by white Christianity. But here's what I'm slowly starting to believe—every dark ending births a new beginning. Evil never has the last word. We've been given a dark gift, a chance to resist and re-imagine the world as it should be. We are living in liminal time, “when we can't go back but we can't see the way forward,” writes my friend Melanie Mudge. What better time to wake up, “dream new dreams,” and rekindle the sacred flame in every human soul. As John Philip reminds us:“We live in a threshold moment. We are waking up to the earth again. We are awakening to the feminine and the desire to faithfully tend the interrelationship of all things. In this moment, politically, culturally, and religiously, we are witnessing the death throes of a shadow form of masculine power that has arrayed itself over against the earth and over against the sacredness of the feminine. This shadow form of power, however, has no ultimate future, for it is essentially false in its betrayal of the earth and the feminine. So in fear it is lashing out with unprecedented force. But it is not the deep spirit of this moment in time. Something else is trying to be born.”Celtic spirituality is needed now more than ever. Allow John Philip to lead you into deeper streams of indigenous wisdom where action and contemplation, vision and profound mystery light our collective way forward. His latest book, The Great Search, is out now. Bio:John Philip Newell (b 1953) is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being.Canadian by birth, and also Scottish, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including his award-winning publication, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book, also with HarperOne (and published in the UK by Wild Goose), is The Great Search (August 2024), in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' (or scotus vagans as they were called) seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He continues, however, to see himself as ‘a grateful son of the Christian household' seeking to be in relationship with the wisdom of humanity's other great spiritual traditions. In 2011 John Philip was awarded the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC for his prophetic work in the field of spirituality and compassion. In 2022 he received the Sacred Universe Award from the Well Center for Spirituality in Chicago, IL in recognition of his significant work in furthering humanity's relationship with the sacredness of Earth. Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! There is a strong sense that the Church is in a time of transition- preparing to birth something new. John Philip Newell in his new book, The Great Search: Turning to earth and soul in the quest for healing and home, addresses this idea and speaks to the group he refers to as the Christian diaspora; those who, from both ‘inside' and ‘outside' the church, have a sense of yearning that there must be something more. Rejoining the podcast for this timely conversation, John Philip explores the tension between the wilderness and the temple. He contests that both the prophetic and priestly voices, which these represent, are needed as we share in the labour pains for this new birth, finding and creating communities to express our deepest longings. John Philip Newell, author of many books and beloved Celtic teacher, joins Dom, Peter and Sue in this second conversation for the podcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Earthkeepers: A Circlewood Podcast on Creation Care and Spirituality
In this episode James and Forrest continue with the second part of a conversation with John Philip Newell about his new book, The Great Search: Turning to Earth and Soul in the Search for Healing and Home. In this book, John Philip argues for a re-imagining of how we relate to creation, to each other, to God and even to ourselves. He advocates for engaging creation as the primary means of knowing God, of seeing the sacred in all life forms, and of loving all creation as we love ourselves. And because the conversation was so full of emerging truths and insights, we split the conversation into two parts. In this, the second half of the conversation, they pick up at a point in our conversation just after John Philip has explained how some religious teachings have made us forget how to fall in love with nature, and caused us to lose sight of the divine presence in everything, all around us. Many people are experiencing a moment of religious exile. The book addresses nine great yearnings of the human soul. We need to nurture our yearnings to allow for new beginnings. The prophetic voice must be based on love, not just criticism. We need to see the sacredness of Earth and every human being. The center of the divine is everywhere, not just in religious institutions. We can find sacredness in urban environments and everyday life. Pilgrimage can happen in many forms, not just in nature. This is episode 160 and we're breathing the spicy smells of the semi-desert, and taking in the exotic and wonderous scenary of the Richtersveld, Namaqualand, and the stunning area around south westn Free State in the 840s. Last episode we heard about the period 1840-1843 in the southern Caledon River valley, and how the Voortrekkers like Jan Mocke were flowing into land that Moshoeshoe of the BaSotho believed was his. That was setting up a classic situation where land was the core of the ension. A lot of what we're looking at today is centred on a town largely forgotten these days, Philippolis. If you drive along the N1 between Bloemfontein and Colesburg, turn off at Trompsburg and head south west along the R717 for around 45 kilometres. It's not far from the Orange River, and it's history is certainly chequered. It's also the home town of writer and intellectual Laurens van Der Post and former Springbok Rugby player Adriaan Strauss. On the 22nd October, 1842, the country beyond the Orange River to the north-east of the Cape Colony was proclaimed British Territory and the sphere of operations of the Cape British military garrison was considerably enlarged. The emigrant Boers based in this region reacted with anger, it was Adam Kok the second the Griqualand leader who had requested protection from the British because of the increased numbers of trekkers in his vicinity. Between 1826 when Kok arrived and the 1840, Kok had managed to get along with the Boers, but the Great Trek had changed everything. The London Missionary Society had founded Philippolis in 1823 as a mission station serving the local Griqua people, named after the man you heard about last episode, Dr John Philip, who was the superintendent of the Society from 1819 to 1849. Adam Kok II settled in Philippolis with his people in 1826 and became the protector of the mission station, on condition that he promised to protect the San against the aggression of the Boers. Kok was supposed to promote peace in the region, at least that was the brief from the London Missionary Society. Instead, carnage ensued as the Griqua used Philippolis as a base for a number of deadly commandos against the San people - virtually wiping them out in the area. Ironically, the Griqua worked with Boers to conduct their raids. This violated the agreement made between the London Missionary Society and Adam Kok II and eventually the San were driven out of the area. When the Voortrekkers began showing up nearby at Colesberg which was one of the main jumping off points of the Great Trek and tension grew between the trekkers and the Griqua. 1844 - like 2024 - was a leap year. And coming up was a momentous moment. In May 24 1844 the first electrical telegram was sent by Samuel Morse from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. to the B&O Railroad "outer depot" in Baltimore, saying "What hath God wrought”. Considering that the telegram and later the radio led to television and then social media, perhaps we should all wonder What Hath God wrought. In June of 1844 the Young Men's Christian Association was formed, the YMCA, setting off a chain of events culminating in the song of the same name by the Village People. History is not all skop skiet and donder. Back on the dusty flatlands around Philippolis, Adam Kok and the Boers were blissfully unaware of the significance of all of these births and deaths across the Atlantic Ocean. Further south, in the Cape, the newly created road boards were hard at work as I mentioned, building new routes out of Cape Town, connecting the Colony to the most important port in the southern hemisphere. By this point, there were steamships operating between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, which oftened called in at Mossel Bay. Other ships began flocking in huge numbers to a bunch of islands off Namaqualand .. the Great Guano Rush had started at the end of 1843 and really got going in 1844. It was discovered that vast deposits of guano on uninhabited island.

For my listeners who've lasted a century of podcasts, thank you folks! The series has far exceeded my expectation when it was launched I thought perhaps a few people would respond and that would be that. But no! This series has managed to climb 6 places on Apple's South African podcast top 20, we're at 16 on the hit parade and passed 500 000 listens! Sorry, this sounds self-serving, and probably is, it's just so exciting to see how many people are interested in this unique place called South Africa, with its crazy paving history and characters that Edgar Allan Poe wouldn't dream up in a thousand years. So with that self-important note - let's head on back to 1828. Lord Charles Somerset's perfidious tenure had ended, that period of post Napoleonic nepotism. In Liverpool, the centre of the trading world in the first half of the 19th Century, laissez-fire oceanic liberalism was raising its genteel bewigged head. The principle of free trade was growing. And in conjunction with this new economic free trade a new kind of radical liberalism was surging it was the time of a new philosophy of the rights of the human individual. This is no small matter, as Adam Smith would agree. You could argue that if it wasn't for Doctor John Philip, with two p's, one L and no S, South African history would be quite different. By the second half of the 1820s the majority of the Khoekhoe had no other employment than as farm labourers, mainly for the trekboers. Dr John had summed up the situation in the Cape and his grim memorandum had led to the establishment of a commission of inquiry. He was fighting for what he called “the emancipation of the wretched aborigines of South Africa…” If you remember an earlier podcast, Dr John Philip had single-handedly convinced Sir Rufane Donkin the acting governor to take action to protect the Khoekhoe labourers from abuse suffered on farms. Dr John had returned to England by mid-1820s, and was a force of nature, persuading the public there that they should enjoin him in the mission to ensure that all men and women living in southern Africa should be regarded as equal. Andries Stockenstrom was no longer the landdrost of Graaff-Reinet, the British had given him a new title. He was the Commissioner General of the frontier, and his new seat was in Uitenhage. This Afrikaner was one of two colonists appointed to the new Advisory Council which helped govern the colony. He was in his middle thirties and during Dr John Philip's great trek around the Cape, they'd both spent many days arguing and debating about the rights of the Khoekhoe. And so it was, in April 1828, four months after being installed as Commissioner General, Stockenstrom sent a memorandum to Major General Bourke about the Khoekhoe, and recommended precisely what Dr John Philip had been suggesting. A law that would sweep away all restrictions on the Khoekhoin, and put them on an equal footing with the colonists. Gasp.

You may not have heard of Sarah Siddons, but if you've seen a production of Macbeth recently, you may have experienced her influence. In the late 18th century, Siddons became one of the first celebrity actors, for her performances in roles including Queen Katherine in Henry VIII, Constance in King John, Volumnia in Coriolanus, and, of course, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. Her brother and frequent co-star John Philip Kemble became the first stage “director” in our sense of the word, even though there was no such title in the 18th-century theater. Both of their careers benefited from Shakespeare's rising critical and popular reputation in the 18th century. Barbara Bogaev talks to scholar Fiona Ritchie, whose new book, Shakespeare in the Theatre: Sarah Siddons and John Philip Kemble, details their rise to fame. Ritchie is an Associate Professor of English at McGill University. Shakespeare in the Theatre: Sarah Siddons and John Philip Kemble is out now from Arden Shakespeare. We at Tree Speech and Alight Theater Guild are incredibly grateful to John Philip Newell for joining us today. Newell is a Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being. Canadian by birth, and a citizen also of Scotland, he resides with his family in Edinburgh and works on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2016 he began the School of Earth and Soul (originally called the School of Celtic Consciousness) and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including A New Ancient Harmony, Sounds of the Eternal, The Rebirthing of God, and his latest award-winning publication Sacred Earth Sacred Soul. Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of the earth and every human being. There's always something John Philip pledging joins us once again villas all in all the goings on in the world thank you Charles Oh no of which only two items really jumped out at me as like oh my gosh one of the courses did gummy bears of course of course they are in wacky adventures that were loosely associated with science and one is one in which he merges with computer in they're everywhere it's high adventure that is literally beyond compare you could not compare adventures desert no this Janda it's not the approved uniform for men all right I'm pretty sure I know this already but like the Disney plus stop since you watch like the whole trailer immoral stuff is does of course turns up Kurt Russell was core vaccine tire tax put it out there man it's going to they're they're they're moving towards that man he's I'm I think what if it's coming fairly soon because they had it in the work for awhile it's animation yeah it got a little more of a flexible activity that can do it like they want right it's the it's the made the laureate they wondering they won which honestly that's fine you know yeah I thought I thought maybe welcome to winter soldier was the first live action what is the I I think that's quickly followed by Wanda in good Captain America and Bucky You'RE GONNA have okay that's the Italian too aww TV someone was wearing a headband added to keep the hair out of your oh yeah the hairband all this Erin I gotTa deal with someone twentieth the Falcon in the winter soldier like we said and then twenty twenty one is one division Loki what if Hawkeye and in directly or indirectly to the next level so you have black widow that's probably going to tie into it you know I don't think any of the new live action live action stuff is supposed to come to what twenty twenty is a twenty twenty or twenty one twenty twenty I think then Miss Marvel midnight and she hulk still to be announced so okay but along those lines you've got so one yeah okay here's the movies basically it's it's set up to silver example so here's his essentially how you can figure out how it's going to go it's like you'll have a Disney plus series and that's going to you think the petty squabbles of the skywalker clan encompass the whole of the galaxy like in the multi-diverse of Madness Spiderman three of course then th ward Levin Thunder also like four Marvel Movies in two thousand twenty one I just want to call it doctor strange in the mouth of bednets that's all right for the TV series it looking there's only one in twenty widows twenty twenty the internals twenty twenty and twenty what I'm surprised that eternal twenty twenty news on Disney plus that was a movie like movie hell okay well good fishing T- although I kind because episode nine ends the skywalker saga yet but Freakin galaxy really his have accessory and no one questions it but like if you're a do you wear a headband to work like what time did why are you wearing always property and never know I think Disney probably didn't wanNA open with marvel they don't want seen as using moral as a crutch and probably the wanted to visit but windows windows doctor strange in the multiversity madness come out not the luck but you see more CPO he's there at the beginning man built by garth mater himself yeah then against mine they wipe his memories were suddenly you know maybe well you needed for foreign policy is just fine scared Amina Turtles might be late twenty twenty might be like a year you know still year off from out that but 2021 Chang Chee and the legend of the ten rings and then Dr St Yeah Yeah asking not even not even I mean I think black widows and the cavalry so yeah I mean Tur- you know remote control it's audiotape in remote control so but you know they'll do what they do I mean you know the three do know famers for the rebellion I'm just going to say that right now like wait are you sure the good guys the living in a world of of of not good people say well comparatively you know it's like you know Benjamin Franklin didn't even own slaves you know sure you put a racist in horrible in other ways but you know were there like you know episode nine is going to like kind of cap off and that like original stuff and then going forward we're GONNA have all brand new stuff so yeah of course either way free Skywalker I think it was always followed love but I'm just saying you know between the Empire and you know Jeddah I is today they're like yeah it's funny that original trilogy you know when Obese Telling Luke you know all your father was this great pilot and you know this great warrior and all this and then yeah well you know it's you know the the numerous you the first three or one two and three at the first thing but when connotes I mean I guess I guess it revenge the since you had to have a great warley ambiguous world so anikin wouldn't be an easy choice thank you works better than his cereal that's just my theory but you know we'll tell goes okay yeah so but we got the Laurean that's what everyone is they need to build up their their star wars proxies or anyway what's GonNa be going through star wars is going to some kind of transition phase because I think I saw something tonight last year that's the problem is that you know you know 'cause it's about the darkening of the universe then you get into into a World Alexa they'll use the mediator are two lateral this because they're literally drawing literally not being anymore you know it's not only Peter technically like a Cyborg so it's like Islamic and even still alive there or is it just like a robot using his body who knows who knows show and stuff tied everything together what if we had like two balk as like the one that like Thai needed a guy in the suit it. 00:12:00 - 00:12:23 I'm more concerned about the Laurie because not for nothing it'll be nice to have a person in the university isn't a skywalk yes ever story that is about not about this one family that is acting the fool essentially you know religious fundamentalists you know they were the puritans to the cifs Satanists and Hong and injuring the whole universe. 00:12:23 - 00:19:52 You know I'm really hoping that you know what is this last episode episode nine what's it called they won't be Jeddah anywhere it will be skywalk food to the sky the Tel Logo Yeah Dwarf aid or killed her just you know not for nothing I why it's like yes effort to become what vader was supposed to be the one who brings balance the force that is arguably okay you're going to help me save my you know my family okay if he doesn't even that's the thing it's like none of it works out the way he wants take your was the emperor was the massive with them the whole time because he's a down guy you know that's the thing that's Oh that's what podcast circle of all the actual truth of it is you have to move between the polls you find in the way or were you WanNa go you could've just said well you know at some rough times kind of became birth Nader and yeah well I mean it'll be was acting like you know Mannequin was dead redemption the first or about any CONSP- falling to the dark side Second three-year about Luke we get those prequels at its hating Christian it's like okay well you now I mean what are you GonNa do all you know what we need we need to like in the Netflix marvel shows we always have like a central character claire who like jump from showed yeah I did double check it is star wars the rise of Skywalker so that's that's a theory that's out there is that that basically when they rebuild the jets sure all right so you said you said you have watchman theories Oh so I'm really excited about the watchmen it's not out yet now I mean we are nine part three story three or re react structure so obstructed supposed to be able to extend like a practical I don't know how it really works unless you're trying to fit it into the mold uh-huh Yep absolutely well I think we need more cachet when he were Jews wandering the Wilderness essentially trying to find how jet I in the world and the last will be Kylo cz back to the ship and the like ray or somebody like rebuilds the Jeddah as something that's the boy is you can't would use every episode helping this I like the idea of how Rohrschack is a white supremacist symbol now on that one big tests he you know I'll know revenge that what is it that is number three I was just like okay who must be it's Sunday 'cause I think you know it's it's a game of thrones sliced I think so you know they're looking for their new game of thrones thing yeah yeah well I have high hopes but at the same time you know he was an extreme objectivism and generally speaking objective lists the thing and make it whatever they want and I guess to me no so there's two levels to this one is like you know it's the mostly because you know George to know it was going to get equal you know and again isn't it it's no wonder how no matter what if you jeopardized find enough you can fit them all in most is like a one point ooh it wasn't sure about that and again to eat you know if you know he he's dead you know anyone can pick up that in a day you know what you guys really got it figured out you know you're just taking polls in swing from that old long enough you're going to get where you're going but it's like yourself best is you knew a trilogy because it's supposed to have the traditional three act structure and you a nano g each of the three is its own part of the three they'd sooner would cut right there and that's the mold so we fit all right so this Anina get messy though you always remember someone else it most of the time you remember people were fondly and death so simply didn't die it's you know oh so bold they're making you know as they tell the story how character evolves how character becomes beyond what he ever really was meant to be and you know not for nothing who is a oh no he wasn't a white supremacist before re thank you are probably not as not as likely to be the best there is that what they are so you know it's like yeah objectivism is it the rises skywalker or something or something like that yeah you I'm just like oh whole ended in someone that they won't be in white supremacists symbol while might be upsetting to people who say I'm not a racist but I think if you go back or many black and Asian and other objectives south there you feel you're the best that you that the best starved original books there's a lot in that that you know even if he doesn't use racial language is racially coded you know because so as we move forward so watchmen is premiering I guess Sunday night now Saturday was the twentieth now yeah and that's that's your basic premise it's a it's essentially you know especially the idea of like if we start with that superhero world where do you go from there is on the I know she emily she should give it get a get open with her piracy they probably don't want to give her so you know it's easy to see how the writings of rushing and get manipulated like a mind calm into anyone who knows the eighties knows that's when urban became a word you know with urban decay he's not talking about and part of the Society of moving beyond you know this idea that if people are going to wear masks if it wouldn't allow Magellan teas while they're outlawed it critics get to watch the money as we're not critical Phillip it'd be more local fire well she's here said they did they after all violence. 00:19:52 - 00:21:10 There's the outlaw vigilantes or the vigilance outlawed from From the original watchmen stories you could be you know yeah bet you like you are probably closer to beaten the bats than other people that you think that people who aren't lends itself to the self-aggrandizement that racism five rhymes and the idea that you know Rohrschack is tonight it'll be a new group on is the sent in this is essentially the argument that are GonNa make the because the were Kazimi of the estate at the end of the movie will end the comic but well known they don't it's it's as Ellen Moore said he leaves it in the or whatever you know it's just a machine in east property in new cares if he sent it can't fates blowed in the first movie weights sorrow okay I'm I'm looking at The stuff Orna Indy I guess it yeah we'll takes place in Oklahoma Yeah so that's not new but then the the idea that we'll have legalized which you know I just I just wonder ends up Saving Doomsday clock they they eventually find out go yeah well that's an that's yeah yeah is that why quite frankly he's older than me so it's like yeah he might be like yeah you know I'm good gals I'm just or white folks even though he was for rightful he's talking about the people that is lovely as his safety horror a mother are missing grew but I guess they they commit a tax on the houses of police officers the police start wearing masks I do not we will be sky walkers because it's arguably arguably about Kylo Ren L. 00:21:10 - 00:28:29 and more off I got it well I don't eleanor cares that much of his work tell me why the young people were talking about these days I don't know I don't know own wars life maybe he's a demon sack I don't know maybe he lives I don't know but or maybe he's just a nice homebody kind of guy who just works as wonderful black magic way he does and in certain yeah I'd rather have the strawberry ice cream you know no no he's getting up there now you know he's got two beautiful wives and a lovely what don't share anyway where were we oh yes watchmen yeah he is five years old what got for him he's twenty years older than me which means helped me there before too long do they are have in ozzy man this is like I know a doomsday clock it if it jumps ahead to but it's like I wonder if like in the comic like the public go watch Fox News now yellow TV half at the end of his life he's like okay girls just thirty seconds twice a year get thirty four years after the Comic Book Kenya Robert Redford is the longest serving US president elected in one thousand nine hundred two yeah a what the war shacks are like a white a could be wrong but he has to I could be completely wrong on that don't quote me on that but I last time I saw a documentary with him I think that was percents every morning every night and good for him so you know maybe he's like you know what it's like oh he's not even the fat Guy Dude and that even a fat guy who died before seventy four what are you doing it's like close to where I am right now like no you should have gotten further really After wearing masks in that's that's the premise and then we have this you know we have the escalating gang I just found the heavy ice cream we can talk and chat and then you know we'll sit there watching movies it'll be beautiful next the good tell me yeah he I think he's got to okay I'll say this congress the on his second wife he has to do people that he can offense hopefully he gets another thirty years under the deal you always freaks me out when I hear about people dying before like seventy four like the wife and then the assistant you know so and throwing it might be a rotation the assistant semi be rotation uh-huh maybe it'll be out by but is this what you're looking forward to this HBO series because he not take out missiles that Whi- which will be some w twenty thirty two I think the first coming out soon in the now for those two are the couple and he's like yeah he paid the bills couple of months and I'm like the series is over the first half of it the second half done yet bounded this and then I'll find out uh-huh she's always the always the thing now what's interesting this one of the West is I think one of the real questions about this visit thirty here's act comic or is it thirty years I mean we'll a conic in the movie around the same time frame they're basically they so then that I think people this little but they've done they'll never admit there will never admit it anymore cannon is Canon okay if it happened it happened you don't get to ignore it you don't get the particular he didn't happen you said he's in the series so I know he's in the series yeah and what makes me wonder is because here's the here's with Doctor Manhattan deciding that this universe needs a little more mixed up listen up that's kind of what they're doing doomsday clock in the comics so yeah and you launches Buller and his act back you know but again that's why that's why absolute control is makes me wonder is DC playing some three dimensional chess here and is the final episode then attending to the watchman because they have people what's weird about that is coming felt like there was completely salad explanation of that which was that there was and again a lot of people did like new fifty two there are just like oh well Dr Manhattan came in and stole like years of time off everybody and you know the thing on the movie this let me let me say a word this shocking will crisis in Earth's is happening yeah I can rebooting university say won Miss Universe maybe things are a little bit different when you can't always reference that every five seconds in your main storyline that was the stable number of universes for reasons and there was like this group of any was was actually I think it would call the monitors and they were like one each of the universe in like a big jar and that was like a thing 'cause you had to ha- had been stable good more than university would be unstable are we need he can do you know I'm going to screw with this universe is like really dude misdemeanors applicable nine if you've decided it's not canon anymore that's the thing DC was getting sick and having the reputation of rebooting every ten to twenty years so there you know this boy at Barry Allen crash no no there was the whole thing about I remember that that you could only have fifty two universes I'm from new fifty two to rebirth they're like oh this isn't a reboot day just basically took whatever they you know whatever they wanted from the old stuff from the new fifty two mashed together which I don't think was perfect yeah well I mean again boils down to like plot device because it's like Oh people did like fifty two when we change everything in DC comics well is all it was all asphalt saluting Goldensohn and this is my argument with galactic because you don't like it doesn't mean you get to ignore it okay so the answer and then well now we're GonNa Change that answer well again people doing what looks like no you can't repute Dr Manhattan just messed with it and now I think they're going the complete opposite direction they're like they're trying to make all the cannon you know everything in d. 00:28:10 - 00:36:37 you know I mean this is where it is I mean I know that's why the doctor Manhattan like the universe leading is it just me or the kind of structure that Dr Manhattan is just like a big blue mic selects well we know he's teased these God machine did happen and then this also happened to and that next things be weird but you know what just read the Damn Book and tell us if it's a good book okay we see ever count so she just go full Gwyn full and say actually no it's GonNa has happened you know I mean they tried new fifty two but it's like you know basically okay well okay Superman's at day one but they didn't want to completely re Batman because it was selling well when it's like okay arrogant to do this you know they want superman but hey we want Harley Quinn right now too so it's like I don't think DC will have better luck with a future projects that man and I thought the timelines and stuff they didn't have a plan because like it basically just jumped in and say Oh yeah this this university even though you didn't see the first five years basically going for five years already so like okay will you just contradicted what the last writer said it was just a mess it sounds legit but hopefully you know it hasn't heard like six times already hesitant universe for it's not a good book birds of prey and whatnot coming yeah you WanNa do you WanNa talk some comics let's talk some common so anyway so for those of you who here's more stuff that relates back to this so it's possible we'll get that going on but yeah they didn't have the time line I think written out completely and it's just like okay that's that's a good idea then no then you'd have different ratings coming in thanking and several other universes so it's like it's not like it's gone it's like you're just being a jerk about it classic marvel cycle which is what this what this book is judged okay literally in marvel saga like almost every issue so five isn't as good I might even drop this who because this was kind of disappointing as far as canonical ideas go and it's like so he's no taste in marvel saga they did jump forward and jump at yeah so when you actually read the old incursions that's the thing you're going to mention that and you know it's a little frustrating so yeah little disappointment on dassler would have been pretty awesome but You know they did nothing with her she was even a hair local actress wants and not even even mentioned imagine yeah looks like it's going to be six issues so yeah I mean honestly 'cause I don't think they'd be a mentioned to tell the entire story of the universe and now you've added thirty more years to it but you're GonNa do it in six issues so I'm sure there's there's probably a mandate don't mention that wedding benchley them forget Sh- well first of the wedding was the best thing that ever happened spider man inning Bible was like twelve shoes might have actually been fifteen but the idea was is that is a lot of history to cover we're gonNA cover it all mentioned secret wars to it didn't it didn't didn't mention student mentioned as demands wedding a bed that real but you know hey he fell in love with Dad's learned that was cool you know issue so from this on that and it's like most of these events you know it seems like everything gets one page it's like trying to explain secret wars to one page and then it's like I mean you could even done it in a panel on the panel and beyond Earth into the whole thing and stuff not too trades out of this instead of one maybe they feel that there aren't enough older like me who like to read a more like maybe the canonical in it as you know it's either five or six I think but here I'll look it up but it just is only five initiative numbers for me Christianity in the West is collapsing. Poet, peacemaker and scholar John Philip Newell believes we can either deny it’s happening, try to shore up the foundations of the old thing, or we can radically reorientate our vision and ask what new thing is trying to be born. So we ask John Philip what this new thing is that is trying to emerge from deep within us and from deep within the collective soul of Christianity. From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott & Charles Riggle
"I think the Germans is getting about all the fighting they want now. They surely have lost a lot of men since the big battle began..." In his twelfth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, dated April 7, 1918, PFC Charles “Dutch” Riggle, a WWI soldier from Wheeling, WV, tells his brother James “Abe” Riggle that he is at Dutch Gap near the Appomattox Court House Civil War battlefield [see Lester Scott's description in episode 42: https://bit.ly/2GLK5Qa], training at the firing range. This would have been about 53 years to the day since the Civil War battle of April 8-9, 1865. He is having a "dandy time" living in a tent. They've brought about 300 horses and mules with them. He says Les is there with him and "looking good." They are being kept away from newly arriving soldiers to prevent yet another round of contagious diseases [like the mumps and measles that afflicted Les]. Dutch thinks it will be at least six months before he's sent to France. He describes the trenches left from the Civil War still extant at Dutch Gap, as well as tombstones for Civil War officers. Dutch refers to the "big battle" during which the Germans have lost a lot of men. This is probably a reference to the 1918 Spring Offensive or Kaiserschlacht (Kaiser's Battle), also known as the Ludendorff Offensive, which began on 21 March 21, 1918. The offensive was launched as a last ditch attempt to break the Allies before the arrival of fresh troops from the United States. Charles “Dutch” Riggle was drafted into the US Army in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, Virginia, where so many Wheeling draftees and volunteers—including his sister-in-law Minnie Riggle’s brother, Lester Scott—were trained. Dutch Riggle was a Private First Class in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, in France. Riggle was a farm boy with little formal education who grew up in the hills of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He spelled many of his words phonetically. His letters have been transcribed exactly as they were written. This is his twelfth letter from Camp Lee, dated 100 years ago today, April 7, 1918. Digital scans and a transcript of Charles Riggle's April 7, 1917 letter can be viewed at: www.archivingwheeling.org/blog/from-camp-lee-to-the-great-war-april-7-1918-podcast Credits: "From Camp Lee to the Great War: The letters of Lester Scott and Charles Riggle" is brought to you by archivingwheeling.org in partnership with the Ohio County Public Library (www.ohiocountylibrary.org) and the WALS Foundation (walswheeling.com). Vince Marshall is the voice of Charles Riggle. The letters of Lester Scott and Charles Riggle were transcribed by Jon-Erik Gilot. From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott & Charles Riggle
"Don't look for me until you see me coming. I will get a car to bring me out. I may be out at any time..." In his eighteenth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, writes that he's sorry he asked Minnie to meet him as his planned furlough to Wheeling has once again been canceled. He's going to try to come home with Dutch [our second letter writer, Charles Riggle]. He's afraid he might be getting the mumps now, a mandatory 19-day hospital stay. He's sending a photo home and trying to get one of the mule team. Elsewhere on the previous day, US President Woodrow Wilson had announced his Fourteen Points programme, an idealistic blueprint for peace meant to bring an end to the war. Wilson wanted to address the causes of the war, including an end to the "secret understandings" among nations (the alliance system) and to make the postwar world "fit and safe to live in...for every peace-loving nation." Among other things, the Fourteen Points called for "open covenants of peace, openly arrived at," "absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas" (inspired by German submarine attacks), "equality of trade conditions among all the nations," a reduction of armaments, an adjustment of colonial claims, numerous territorial adjustments including an independent Polish state, and "a general association of nations" (which would become the ineffective League of Nations). Importantly, Wilson called upon the Allied Powers to be fair with Germany, a caveat that would be ignored, and the harsh terms imposed on a defeated Germany would help ensure that the Great War would not be the hoped-for "War to End All Wars." Though Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 for his efforts, the Fourteen Points were largely ignored at the Paris Peace Conference. Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, where so many Wheeling soldiers were trained. And, like so many of his Ohio Valley comrades, he served in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott & Charles Riggle
"I will wait and see if I have to go to France but I have begin to think I will never get to go over..." In his ninth letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, writes about his dinner of fresh pork and tomato catsup, how hot it remains in Virginia, his mule driving prowess, the insurance he plans to purchase in case "anything should happen," how he has quit smoking cigarettes in favor of his pipe, and how easy he has it around camp. Interestingly, he asks Minnie what she thinks of the Germans "surrendering" to France. This could be a reference to the minor French victory at La Malmaison in late October 1917, during which the French forced a six mile retreat of the German 7th Army, which suffered twice as many casualties as their opponents. The Germans recaptured the position a few months later. This is his eighth letter from Camp Lee, dated 100 years ago today, November 18, 1917. A World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, Virginia, where so many Wheeling draftees and volunteers were trained. Scott served as a Wagoner (mule team driver) in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. This is his letter home from Camp Lee, September 30, 1917. From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott & Charles Riggle
In his fourth letter home from Camp Lee to his sister Minnie Riggle, Lester Scott describes, somewhat boastfully, the details of his rather filling dinner, his eagerness to be sent to France to the war, and his prowess at guard duty. While the other men are homesick, Lester declares himself "very well contented." A World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, Virginia, where so many Wheeling draftees and volunteers were trained. Scott served as a Wagoner (mule team driver) in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. This is his letter home from Camp Lee, October 21, 1917. This week, we continue the story of John Philip, a humble legal clerk who lived in a world of fantasy, delusion, and obsession. This week, we try to understand his thought processes, and what those around him made of them. IMAGE: Portrait of Robert Fergusson (1750-1774). Painting by Alexander Runciman (1736-1785). Among those we have encountered so far in this series, only Alexander Cruden seems to have frightened those around him. Most sufferers from mental disorders were vulnerable people, perplexed by what was happening to their minds. John Philip was quite different. A humble legal clerk, he lived in a world of fantasy, delusion, and obsession, which caused him to instil fear in others and brought him to the edge of murder. In four episodes, based around a single, very long statement he made to magistrates, I explain what started as a simple infatuation with a young woman of high rank in Georgian Edinburgh. Then I move on to trying to understand his thought processes, and what those around him made of them. In the third episode I explore his trial for harassment and assault – what we might call stalking – and the nature of insanity defences in the historic past. Finally, I look at what became of him and the object of his obsession. IMAGE: Head of Military Man by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, 1682-1754, oil on canvas. Phil is the long-time string arranger for Tori Amos and has done a heap more production, arrangement, and keyboard work. He has a very deliberate production style, carefully crafting a very natural-sounding theatrical background using both cutting-edge and very old tools. We talk about "Cross the Channel" from the Brik & Shenale EP (2012), Phil's arrangement and production of "Stars that Speak" by Willie Deville from Pistola (2008), and "Pornokiss" from a project Phil initiated called The Royal Macadamians from their album Experiments in Terror (1990). We also listen to a brand-new Shenale instrumental "Gautama in Love." The opening music is from "Yes, Anastasia" by Tori Amos from Under the Pink (1994). King John of England in his first year or two of rule achieved some successes, but his lack of tact and diplomacy, plus poor decision-making lost him many allies in France. The focus of the escalating conflict between the Plantagenets and Capetians became Chateau Gaillard, a magnificent fortress in the key borderlands between Normandy and the French royal demesne around Paris. www.historyeurope.net See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
These Apostles fulfilled Jesus’ mandate to take the gospel to the uttermost parts of the world. The focus of our documentation of the church, after it spread from Jerusalem, was to the west. We lose access to documents from the Eastern Church, but there are ancient records with information that can be considered, but not always reliable. Follow the biographical information available for these Apostles from scripture and historical tradition. Learn what we can know of their lives, the area of their ministries, confusions that may have been caused by names, relationships and martyrdoms. Erase any doubt with the understanding that Judas Iscariot was not a believer. As church age believers, what is our mandate?
John is the author of "Utopian Frontiers (originally called “The Canpro Project”) it is a story about a family that inadvertently stumbles upon a secret, clandestine research city situated on the fringes of national parkland, somewhere in the Americas. It is a story of hope for the future well being of humanity. In a story that is as controversial as it is reassuring, sometimes it is possible to find something you always hoped existed, and in finding it, you confront your own truth as much as that of the world you live in. Sure to be an interesting show..
