The top AI news from the past week, every ThursdAI

Hey, Alex here. Super quick, as I'm still attending Dev Day, but I didn't want to leave you hanging (if you're a paid subscriber!), I have decided to outsource my job and give the amazing podcasters of NoteBookLM the whole transcript of the opening keynote of OpenAI Dev Day.You can see a blog of everything they just posted hereHere's a summary of all what was announced:* Developer-Centric Approach: OpenAI consistently emphasized the importance of developers in their mission to build beneficial AGI. The speaker stated, "OpenAI's mission is to build AGI that benefits all of humanity, and developers are critical to that mission... we cannot do this without you."* Reasoning as a New Frontier: The introduction of the GPT-4 series, specifically the "O1" models, marks a significant step towards AI with advanced reasoning capabilities, going beyond the limitations of previous models like GPT-3.* Multimodal Capabilities: OpenAI is expanding the potential of AI applications by introducing multimodal capabilities, particularly focusing on real-time speech-to-speech interaction through the new Realtime API.* Customization and Fine-Tuning: Empowering developers to customize models is a key theme. OpenAI introduced Vision for fine-tuning with images and announced easier access to fine-tuning with model distillation tools.* Accessibility and Scalability: OpenAI demonstrated a commitment to making AI more accessible and cost-effective for developers through initiatives like price reductions, prompt caching, and model distillation tools.Important Ideas and Facts:1. The O1 Models:* Represent a shift towards AI models with enhanced reasoning capabilities, surpassing previous generations in problem-solving and logical thought processes.* O1 Preview is positioned as the most powerful reasoning model, designed for complex problems requiring extended thought processes.* O1 Mini offers a faster, cheaper, and smaller alternative, particularly suited for tasks like code debugging and agent-based applications.* Both models demonstrate advanced capabilities in coding, math, and scientific reasoning.* OpenAI highlighted the ability of O1 models to work with developers as "thought partners," understanding complex instructions and contributing to the development process.Quote: "The shift to reasoning introduces a new shape of AI capability. The ability for our model to scale and correct the process is pretty mind-blowing. So we are resetting the clock, and we are introducing a new series of models under the name O1."2. Realtime API:* Enables developers to build real-time AI experiences directly into their applications using WebSockets.* Launches with support for speech-to-speech interaction, leveraging the technology behind ChatGPT's advanced voice models.* Offers natural and seamless integration of voice capabilities, allowing for dynamic and interactive user experiences.* Showcased the potential to revolutionize human-computer interaction across various domains like driving, education, and accessibility.Quote: "You know, a lot of you have been asking about building amazing speech-to-speech experiences right into your apps. Well now, you can."3. Vision, Fine-Tuning, and Model Distillation:* Vision introduces the ability to use images for fine-tuning, enabling developers to enhance model performance in image understanding tasks.* Fine-tuning with Vision opens up opportunities in diverse fields such as product recommendations, medical imaging, and autonomous driving.* OpenAI emphasized the accessibility of these features, stating that "fine-tuning with Vision is available to every single developer."* Model distillation tools facilitate the creation of smaller, more efficient models by transferring knowledge from larger models like O1 and GPT-4.* This approach addresses cost concerns and makes advanced AI capabilities more accessible for a wider range of applications and developers.Quote: "With distillation, you take the outputs of a large model to supervise, to teach a smaller model. And so today, we are announcing our own model distillation tools."4. Cost Reduction and Accessibility:* OpenAI highlighted its commitment to lowering the cost of AI models, making them more accessible for diverse use cases.* Announced a 90% decrease in cost per token since the release of GPT-3, emphasizing continuous efforts to improve affordability.* Introduced prompt caching, automatically providing a 50% discount for input tokens the model has recently processed.* These initiatives aim to remove financial barriers and encourage wider adoption of AI technologies across various industries.Quote: "Every time we reduce the price, we see new types of applications, new types of use cases emerge. We're super far from the price equilibrium. In a way, models are still too expensive to be bought at massive scale."Conclusion:OpenAI DevDay conveyed a strong message of developer empowerment and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities. With new models like O1, the introduction of the Realtime API, and a dedicated focus on accessibility and customization, OpenAI is paving the way for a new wave of innovative and impactful AI applications developed by a global community. Former MLB Pitcher Josh Towers and Scott Seidenberg talk about the Mets/Braves DoubleHeader to determine the NL Wild Card and give out BEST BETS for the Postseason games coming up. Quotes and Analysis Josh Towers (0:32 - 2:50): Quote: "The best players in any sport are able to take a step back and see it for what it's worth." Analysis: Towers highlights the importance of composure and strategic thinking, a quality he attributes to elite athletes. He emphasizes how game management can determine success, as seen in the Mets' comeback against the Braves. Quote: "Every pitch that we saw was just up over the middle of the plate and out over." Analysis: This observation by Towers critiques the Braves' bullpen's poor performance in the late innings, noting that missed locations led to several critical hits by Mets players, like Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo. Scott Sidenberg (4:10 - 4:29): Quote: "The win probability was just off the charts." Analysis: Sidenberg references how dramatic the game's comeback was for the Mets, framing it as one of the wildest matches, especially given the Braves' earlier dominance in the game. Player Statistics & Analysis Francisco Lindor: Lindor was pivotal in the Mets' victory, hitting a critical home run in the 9th inning, reflecting his recent hot streak at the plate. Josh Towers praises Lindor for his ability to handle key situations, like making contact on a first-pitch curveball that led to his game-winning hit. Brandon Nimmo: Nimmo, after falling behind 0-2 in his at-bat, capitalized on a poorly placed fastball to deliver a home run, showcasing his poise under pressure. Braves' bullpen: The Braves bullpen struggled in crucial moments, with Josh Towers pointing out that missed pitches over the plate allowed the Mets' hitters to dominate. Phil Matan and Edwin Diaz were particularly shaky, contributing to the Braves' collapse. Team Statistics & Insights Mets Performance: The Mets demonstrated resilience by overcoming a 3-0 deficit late in the game. Lindor and Nimmo's homers, combined with strategic bullpen moves, highlight their capability to handle high-pressure situations. Their performance solidified their chance at securing a postseason spot. Braves Breakdown: Despite Swellenbach pitching seven shutout innings, the Braves' bullpen collapsed late in the game. Towers critiques how the Braves mismanaged their relief pitching, especially by continuing to pitch to Lindor when a strategic walk could have been considered. Postseason Implications: Scott and Josh discuss the postseason scenarios. If the Mets win Game 2, they will face the Padres. A loss sends them to face the Brewers. Josh argues the Mets should prefer Milwaukee over San Diego, noting the Padres' offensive strength despite their struggles. Speaker and Timestamps Scott Sidenberg (0:00 - 0:31): Introduces the podcast and sets the stage for the Mets-Braves doubleheader analysis. Josh Towers (0:32 - 2:50): Breaks down the Mets' thrilling comeback and critiques the Braves' bullpen. Timestamp: "The bullpen for the Braves just absolutely collapses" Scott Sidenberg (4:10 - 4:29): Discusses the win probability and Braves' decisions. Josh Towers (5:14 - 5:19): Analyzes the potential outcomes of the Mets' win in Game 2 and critiques their postseason strategy. Conclusion The podcast delves into the exciting, high-stakes Game 1 between the Mets and Braves, focusing on key player performances, bullpen collapses, and strategic mistakes. Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo stood out for the Mets, while the Braves' bullpen's inefficiency cost them the game. Towers and Sidenberg also explore postseason scenarios, favoring the Mets against the Brewers rather than the Padres due to perceived matchup advantages. Learn more about your ad choices. Understanding that anxiety isn't just a mental experience is crucial; it manifests in various bodily changes that can often be overlooked. We often find ourselves grappling with physical complaints—such as gastrointestinal issues, rapid heartbeats, and disturbances in sleep—that we may not realize can be attributed to our anxiety. It's essential to acknowledge that anxiety can significantly influence bodily functions, and vice versa. We start by discussing how anxiety can disturb digestive processes, leading to issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This connection between the mind and gut is profound. The body's response during stressful situations—like the fight-or-flight reaction—can temporarily halt digestion, making it clear that when we're anxious, our digestive health may suffer. Additionally, I touch on how heightened stress levels can affect our reproductive organs and immune function, leaving us vulnerable to various physical ailments. It's an interconnected web, and I emphasize that whether physical discomfort leads to stress or anxiety causes physiologic issues, addressing both sides is paramount for holistic recovery. I also highlight the role of hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which our bodies release in response to anxiety. These hormones prepare us for immediate threats but can adversely affect our bodily functions when released in excess in our modern, less-threatening lives. It's crucial to find strategies to manage stress more constructively. I provide practical techniques to help listeners recalibrate their responses to anxiety, starting with something as fundamental as deep breathing. The power of breath cannot be understated in calming the nervous system. I walk listeners through several popular breathing exercises, including a longer exhale and a double inhalation technique, encouraging everyone to practice these methods to ease anxiety and enhance oxygen flow to the body. Besides breathing techniques, I emphasize the importance of maintaining physical health through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate rest—each vital to both mental clarity and bodily well-being. Cory Rosenke is an author, theologian, pastor, teacher, and coach who spent most of his childhood in the debilitating grip of poverty, isolation, and even homelessness. He found his reprieve by exploring the majestic but lonely mountain slopes of the Rocky Mountains, along with a walking stick, a book, and his faithful and beloved dog.  Cory's consistently curious mind was always asking the question “why,” especially in regard to human nature, and many of the books which captivated his attention were not the typical choices for young readers.   At the ages of eleven and twelve, Cory was eagerly exploring Laws and Republic by Plato, Ethics by Aristotle, and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. He especially loved “Where I Lived, and What I Lived for,” by Henry David Thoreau, because Cory felt that it seemed to meet him where he was at. His early teen years found him exploring a new province (Alberta) and embarking on new literary adventures, including the diverse works of Sigmund Freud, Edmund Burke, Plutarch, and C. S. Lewis, just to name a few. Cory's recently published book is titled “The Magnetic Heart of God: Understanding the Five Cravings of Your Soul.” Today, Cory remains as inquisitive as ever, spending his days as he always has, reading, writing, exploring, shepherding, and forever watching and wondering. Cory shares much of his learned wisdom and insights and addresses many important questions regarding the heart and soul of humanity and human nature, including the proof that mankind has souls, how we can discover meaning and purpose in our lives, why people do what they do, why the world is falling apart, and what it means to be made in the image of God, and how we can reconnect with our soul.     Download this beautiful and uplifting episode which answers so many unanswered questions and gently unlocks the mystery of heart, soul, and human nature. Enabling, Recognizing, and Celebrating Great Customer Service  Shep Hyken interviews David Diestel, chief executive officer of FirstService Residential. He talks about delivering exceptional service consistently, creating moments that matter, and empowering the team to provide amazing customer experiences.  Top Takeaways:    A brand is not just about a name. It's about being united and joining together under a common set of values. It starts with leadership defining who you are as an organization and what you stand for. Then, it is reinforced daily throughout the organization through empowerment and recognition.    Creating an organization's positive and supportive culture is key to delivering extraordinary experiences. Daily meetings involving all team members, regardless of their position, help to unify the company's culture and values. This consistency in communication and empowerment fosters a workplace that is service-aware and dedicated to delivering outstanding customer experiences.    In most organizations, there is a gap between CEOs' perceptions of being customer-centric and customers' actual experiences. This is why feedback is important. Using tools like Net Promoter Scores (NPS) to measure customer and employee experiences provides valuable insights. By understanding the depth of customer relationships, companies can align their culture and optimize their customer experience, ultimately leading to improved service, retention, and growth.    Maintaining a customer-focused culture across multiple regions requires alignment and consistency. Celebrating customer service wins and establishing consistent communication helps maintain a customer-centric focus across various locations.    Plus, Shep and David share examples of Moments of Magic®  and "Moments that Matter." Tune in!  Quote:   "Every interaction with the customer matters. It is important that everyone in the organization learns this and that it is constantly reinforced."    About:    David Diestel is the Chief Executive Officer of FirstService Residential, one of North America's largest property management groups. They serve 9,000 communities and 18,000 employees.  Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning keynote speaker, and host of Amazing Business Radio.   Learn more about your ad choices. David is a global speaker and CEO presentation skills coach who has coached and spoken to more than 500,000 people in 60 countries over the last 25 years. As the phrase goes, he's been around a bit. He's also a Sunday Times #1 bestselling author whose books have had a worldwide readership of more than 1 million people, as well as the US Memory Champion, Guinness record breaker and competitive bodybuilder. Because you can't get on stage too often wearing nothing but skimpy undercrackers and 10 gallons of fake tan. He's an all-around Yorkshire legend! Authentic Touch Points: David's journey to coaching. 1:30 Learning memory techniques. 3:00 Become a rockstar! 6:00 Ego vs imposter syndrome. 9:00 Getting over the fear of speaking. 12:00 Climbing the corporate communication ladder. 17:00 Honest feedback, with kindness. 20:00 Getting from good to amazing. 23:30 David has spent 25 years sitting and watching leaders die in front of audiences. That makes him feel sad for them, sad for their audiences and sad for the missed opportunity to inspire, educate and entertain. His mission is to show leaders how to be amazing when they present. How to get their message across and transform the world in which we live. How to smash every presentation and, dare I even say it, how to enjoy the experience of giving a great speech! In short, what he does is turn leaders into presentation rockstars! As I offer executive coaching, I encourage leaders to reach out for guidance about presenting their authentic selves to develop an improved workplace for everyone with less conflict.
