In 2008, one of Europe's most wanted fugitives, the former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, was arrested in Belgrade for war crimes. Karadzic had been in hiding for more than a decade, pretending to be an alternative medicine healer called "Dr Dabic". Serbia's former war crimes prosecutor Vladimir Vuckevic remembers the tense days that led to Karadzic's capture. PHOTO: Radovan Karadzic in 1992 (Getty Images)

From the Lawfare Archive, February 19, 2020: Jessica Stern, who served on the National Security Council during the Clinton administration, has a remarkable skill: she interviews really bad people, and she writes about them in really interesting ways. She spent quite a bit of time interviewing Bosnian-Serb war criminal Radovan Karadzic, who is serving a life sentence at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in The Hague for genocide in connection with the Bosnian conflict in the 1990s. Their conversations led to the publication of the book, "My War Criminal: Personal Encounters with an Architect of Genocide," which triggered a remarkable outpouring of rage at Jessica Stern. Benjamin Wittes spoke with Jessica recently about the book, the controversy, and her general approach to talking to evil men. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hate seems to be everywhere - whether it’s white supremacists marching on the streets of America, jihadists slaughtering Christians in Sri Lanka or the massacre of Muslims in New Zealand. In this five part series, BBC journalist Allan Little unpicks the mechanics of hatred and reveals how this dangerous emotion has been whipped up and disseminated throughout history. Allan Little begins with the hatred he witnessed on the killing fields of the Bosnian War, deconstructing how Serbian leaders like Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic manipulated and weaponised history to inculcate a violent loathing that would lead to the massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica. It's a hatred and an ideology that continues to inspire today's extreme far-right. Presenter: Allan Little Producer: Xavier Zapata Editor: Helen Grady

In this episode of Terrorism 360°, Founding Director of START Dr. Gary LaFree interviews Dr. Jessica Stern, an expert on perpetrators of violence and the possible connections between trauma and terror in the field of terrorism studies. She has written on terrorist groups across religions and ideologies, among them neo-Nazis, Islamists, anarchists, and white supremacists, writing also about anti-terrorist movements. She is currently working on a study of Radovan Karadzic, a former politician indicted for war crimes in Bosnia.
Ed Vulliamy has worked all around the world as a journalist; he’s best-known for his prize-winning coverage of the war in Bosnia, on television and in The Guardian. The war crimes he reported on led to his becoming a witness in the trial of the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, and he was the first journalist since the Nuremberg trials to testify at an international war crimes tribunal. He went on to cover the 9/11 attacks in New York, and more recently the drug wars on the US/Mexico border. Ed Vulliamy is also the son of the much-loved children’s author Shirley Hughes, something that often eclipses all his other achievements, and he was immortalised as a teenager in her books. Music has been crucial to him all through his career, and in conversation with Michael Berkeley he reveals that his very first job was as an extra in a production of Aida. He talks movingly about his experience in Bosnia, about the psychological after-effects of being so near the horror of war, and about why he wishes he’d been a cartoonist instead. Music choices include Verdi, Schubert, Shostakovich, Joan Baez, Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro”, and the Bosnian singer Amira Medunjanin. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3

Men hvorfor velger man rettssak foran forsoning etter slike kriger?

Last month, the International Tribunal for Yugoslavia came down with a verdict against Radovan Karadzic, the first president of the Serb Republic, and leader during the Bosnian War of the 1990's. Regardless of the merits of the ICTY's case against Karadzic, the manner in which it was conducted, and the refusal of the Court to investigate properly, let alone prosecute NATO for the crimes it committed leading to and during the secession wars of Yugoslavia brings into question both the utility of the International Tribunal itself, and more broadly, the concept of international law entirely. In fact, exemptions from international law that have allowed the litany of wars waged by the West since the dissolution of the Soviet Union can all be traced back to the Former Yugoslavia, where the United States made sure to exclude itself and its allies from the "supreme international crime" of aggression. Luciana Bohne is a retired (and recovering) academic, and co-founder of Film Criticism, a journal of cinema studies at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. She describes herself as possessing "an internationalist outlook, having been born in Yugoslavia, raised in Italy, and matured intellectually in the US." Luciana's articles on politics and mainly Italian film history appear at CounterPunch.org, where her latest article, 'The Cowards' Wars' was, she says, occasioned by the sentencing of Radovan Karadzic to forty years imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia. Luciana Bohne in the first half. And; I went down Monday to Victoria's Canadian Forces recruiting centre to talk to some of the people observing the international Day of Action Against Military Spending. For Canada's part, VOWS, or Voice of Women for Peace called on the Canadian Government to: "Substantially reduce military expenditures and re-allocate them to urgent social and environmental needs;" saying, "The federal government should invest in programs that will reduce poverty and help our country transition to a low-carbon, green economy and NOT on combat missions overseas and buying new warships and fighter jets." Giving voice for a world without militarism with VOWS in the second half. And; Victoria Street Newz publisher emeritus and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news of some of the good things coming to the streets of our city, and beyond there too, this week. But first, Luciana Bohne and the writing and unwriting of laws granting impunity ad infinitum, based on assumptions of the "altruistic morality of intervening to adjust the affairs of the world."

There's dancing in a nightclub in Damascus, though some remain seated during the songs played in honour of the leaders of Syria and Hezbollah. And not much dancing in the suburbs. How are locals coping after five years of war? He started out as a caring psychiatrist, and before his capture he lived as an alternative healer. Yes, it's the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. who may be convicted of genocide next week. Playing chess with God - or rather, in a stunning part of Ethiopia called the Chess pieces of God, is it check mate for some very rare animals, or the local mountain people? In Romania, shepherds cloaked in sheep skins are on the war path, and we sail past the remotest island in the world, Bouvetoya. It is only inhabited by penguins, but has its own internet domain.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Just beyond the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK,Russ Baker discusses the likelihood of a lone gunman and what the evidence suggests. We also talk about the Boston Bombing, Michael Hastings, and the role of Alternative Media in our world. His Alternative News Site, WhoWhatWhy.com is an excellent example of excellence in news reporting. Russ Baker is an award-winning investigative reporter with a track record for making sense of complex and little understood matters-and explaining it to elites and ordinary people alike, using entertaining, accessible writing to inform and involve. Over the course of more than two decades in journalism, Baker has broken scores of major stories. Topics included: early reporting on inaccuracies in the articles of The New York Times's Judith Miller that built support for the invasion of Iraq; the media campaign to destroy UN chief Kofi Annan and undermine confidence in multilateral solutions; revelations by George Bush's biographer that as far back as 1999 then-presidential candidate Bush already spoke of wanting to invade Iraq; the real reason Bush was grounded during his National Guard days – as recounted by the widow of the pilot who replaced him; an article published throughout the world that highlighted the West's lack of resolve to seriously pursue the genocidal fugitive Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, responsible for the largest number of European civilian deaths since World War II; several investigations of allegations by former members concerning the practices of Scientology; corruption in the leadership of the nation's largest police union; a well-connected humanitarian relief organization operating as a cover for unauthorized US covert intervention abroad; detailed evidence that a powerful congressional critic of Bill Clinton and Al Gore for financial irregularities and personal improprieties had his own track record of far more serious transgressions; a look at the practices and values of top Democratic operative and the clients they represent when out of power in Washington; the murky international interests that fueled both George W. Bush's and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns; the efficacy of various proposed solutions to the failed war on drugs; the poor-quality televised news program for teens (with lots of advertising) that has quietly seeped into many of America's public schools; an early exploration of deceptive practices by the credit card industry; a study of ecosystem destruction in Irian Jaya, one of the world's last substantial rain forests. Baker has written for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, The Nation, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Village Voice and Esquire and dozens of other major domestic and foreign publications. He has also served as a contributing editor to the Columbia Journalism Review. Baker received a 2005 Deadline Club award for his exclusive reporting on George W. Bush's military record. After more than ten years on the run, suspected war criminal Radovan Karadzic has been arrested in Serbia. Professor Stefan Wolff weighs up the impact the arrest is likely to have on this region torn apart by one of Europe's bloodiest wars.
Seminar given on 22nd February 2010 by Peter Robinson, Legal Advisor for former Bosnian Serb President, Radovan Karadzic, ICTY and Lead Counsel for former President of the Rwandan National Assembly, Joseph Nzirorera, ICTR.
