Here Comes the Rain Again".
Sweet dreams were made of ... this? Cows, cellos, and buzz cuts? Yes, back in the 80s, pop duo, Eurythmics, jolted out our senses with new wave, synth pop tunes and, thanks to Annie Lennox, music videos that challenged what a female pop star should look like. But now, decades later, are their videos more like 80s nightmares? The Old Roommates want to abuse you, but instead revisit "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Here Comes the Rain Again" through their middle-aged lens. Bestimmt merkt man mir an, wie aufgeregt ich war – seit Jahrzehnten bin ich grosser Fan von Dave Stewart. Nicht nur wegen seiner Pionierarbeit in Sachen Elektropop mit den frühen Eurythmics Songs («Sweet Dreams (are made of this)», «Who's that Girl?», Her Comes the Rain Again»), sondern auch für seine späteren Songs wie «Jack Talking» oder «Happy to Be Here.» Not only because of his pioneering work in electropop with the early Eurythmics songs ("Sweet Dreams (are made of this)", "Who's that Girl?", Her Comes the Rain Again"), but also for his later songs such as "Jack Talking" or "Happy to Be Here." I didn't meet Dave Stewart in my studio – as I usually do in this podcast – but at the Hotel Hyatt at Zurich Airport. Big thanks to the "Art on Ice" team for arranging this! I spoke to him about his anticipation for his upcoming engagement at Art on Ice in February 2024. He shares his enthusiasm for live performances and talks about his experience as a musician and producer and songwriter for other great musicians such as Boby Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Bryan Ferry and Joss Stone. British musician, songwriter, producer and Eurythmics co-founder DAVE STEWART's upcoming memoir SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THIS: A Life In Music is an atmospheric portrait of a golden age in music that lays bare all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n' roll revealing untold stories from his adventurous career. It will be released in hardcover and audio Tuesday, February 9 via New American Library (NAL), an imprint of Penguin Random House. The memoir is packed with unforgettable never-before-told stories featuring the likes of Bob Dylan, Elton John, Stevie Nicks and Daryl Hall providing readers a behind-the-scenes look at the prolific musician, songwriter, and producer's career that has spanned three decades and more than 100 million album sales. In the book Stewart opens up about:●His little-known five-year relationship with Annie Lennox before Eurythmics●Visiting Bob Dylan's favorite underground club●A wild night at Stevie Nicks' Beverly Hills home in the 80s●A psychedelic adventure with Daryl Hall●Becoming one of the first musicians to sign with Elton John's record label in the 70s, and failing spectacularly●The making of numerous worldwide smash hits, including “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”●His adventures beyond Eurythmics, including collaborating, recording, and creating havoc with legends like Bono, Mick Jagger, and Tom Petty, as well as relative newcomers like Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and Joss StoneDAVE STEWART BIO (FROM ROLLING STONE.COMBest known as one-half of the groundbreaking synth pop duo Eurythmics, Dave Stewart was also a highly successful producer and, on occasion, a solo artist. David A. Stewart (as he also sometimes was credited on record) was born September 9, 1952 in Sunderland, England; the product of an upper-middle class family, he enjoyed his first taste of musical success during the early '70s while fronting the band Longdancer. The group seemed poised for big things after signing to Elton John's Rocket Records, but they quickly fizzled out; Stewart soon resurfaced in a variety of short-lived groups, and eventually began writing songs with friend Peet Coombes. In the late '70s he was also introduced to an aspiring singer named Annie Lennox; the two became lovers, and with Coombes they formed a group dubbed the Tourists, issuing a trio of new wave-influenced LPs between 1979 and 1980. When the Tourists came to a halt in late 1980, Stewart and Lennox's romance ended as well; they agreed to continue their musical partnership, however, rechristening themselves Eurythmics. Their soulful synth pop sound was created solely via Stewart's technological mastery, capped off by Lennox's powerful vocals; after the title track of 1983's Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) became an international smash, the Eurythmics rose to become one of the '80s most successful and innovative artists, scoring such major hits as 1984's "Here Comes the Rain Again," 1985's "Would I Lie to You?," and 1986's "Missionary Man." In 1985, Stewart also scored his first outside success as a producer, working on Aretha Franklin's comeback album Who's Zoomin' Who; that same year, he also helmed Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' hit Southern Accents. In the years to follow, he went on to produce music for Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, and the Neville Brothers.By the end of the '80s, Eurythmics' popularity was on the decline, and after 1989's We Too Are One failed to recapture the magic of their earlier work, they essentially disbanded, with only a hits compilation and a live LP to follow. Stewart, who in 1987 had married Bananarama/Shakespear's Sister vocalist Siobhan Fahey, initially turned to soundtrack work, scoring the Dutch film Lily Was Here in 1989; a year later, he put together a new band, the Spiritual Cowboys, with ex-Pretenders drummer Martin Chambers. Sporting a more atmospheric, guitar-driven sound than his previous work, the Spiritual Cowboys issued two albums, a 1990 self-titled effort and 1991's Honest, neither of which caught on with audiences. Stewart then spent the next several years in relative silence, accepting a few production jobs but otherwise staying out of the limelight. In 1995, he finally issued his proper solo debut, Greetings from the Gutter. In 1997, Stewart co-produced the album Destination Anywhere for Jon Bon Jovi. He emerged as an artist again in 1999; this time as a film composer scoring director Robert Altman's film Cookie's Fortune in 1999. In November 2002, he worked with former South African president Nelson Mandela. Stewart came up with the idea of turning Mandela's prison number into a telephone number. He wrote and recorded songs with Paul McCartney, Bono, and the Edge (among others) that could only be heard if you dialed this number; the cost of the call was in fact a donation in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the newly independent but beleaguered nation. Along with an ad agency, Stewart organized the entire campaign. In 2004, he collaborated with Jagger on the score for a remake of the film Alfie, and in 2007 scored Ted Demme's film The Ref. In March 2007, Stewart unveiled an initiative called "Greenpeace Works," which he labeled a "think tank" to dream up ways celebrities and Greenpeace could work together on green issues. For the project, he issued The Dave Stewart Songbook, a large coffee table-size book full of stories and photographs. It was accompanied by a newly recorded CD of 21 songs that been co-written or co-produced by him. Also included was the song "American Prayer," written with Bono. In 2008, Stewart shot a video for the tune as support for Barack Obama's presidential bid. In 2011, he completed work on his musical, Ghost, which opened in England in March; he also finished work on Stevie Nicks' In Your Dreams album, which was co-produced by Glen Ballard and released in May. Simultaneously, he also completed his first album of new material in 13 years in Nashville, with help from Martina McBride, Joss Stone, Colbie Caillat, and the Secret Sisters. Entitled The Blackbird Diaries, the set was recorded at McBride's husband John's Blackbird Studios and issued in late May. Stewart also helmed the sessions and co-wrote the songs for Stone's LP1, which was released in the summer of 2011. That same year, both Stewart and Stone joined SuperHeavy, a supergroup that also featured Mick Jagger, Damian Marley, and A.R. Rahman. A self-titled SuperHeavy album arrived in the fall of 2011, and then Stewart returned to Blackbird Studios, recording and releasing his solo effort The Ringmaster General in 2012. A year later, Stewart released Lucky Numbers, another solo album laden with guest stars, this time including Martina McBride and Karen Elson.

Daryl Hall joins Kyle Meredith to talk about BeforeAfter, his first best-of collection that highlights his solo albums. In diving into the new collection, the Hall & Oates singer takes us back to making Sacred Songs with Robert Fripp (who compared Hall's work to Bowie's at the time), being on the forefront of streaming shows on the web a full decade ahead of everyone else, and covering "Here Comes the Rain Again" on this new set. Hall also discusses the relevance of his '80s song "What's Gonna Happen to Us" with the latest war in Ukraine, his upcoming tour with Todd Rundgren, not being a fan of the folks who run the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and having Joni Mitchell backing him on the song "Right as Rain." What's more, he discusses working with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart on a new album. Listen to Daryl Hall discuss BeforeAfter, his storied career and collaborations now. If you're old, and if you liked pop music back in the '80s, you'll remember a hit from the Eurythmics called, "Here Comes the Rain Again". Well, even though Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky have no idea who that band is, they were singing that song. It sure is tough to enjoy some fishing when it's nothing but rain, rain, rain. But the question is this: when will the boys start singing "Here Comes the Sun"?? Listen for the upcoming forecast and find out...

Our discussion and review of the 1983 song "Here Comes the Rain Again"
On November 14th, 1983, British synth-pop duo Eurythmics, released their third studio album, Touch. Annie Lennox looked like a gender-bending robot zombie, but sang with soul. Meanwhile Dave Stewart masterminded the sound and synthesizers. Together they made divine synth-pop, including the hits Who's That Girl and Here Comes the Rain Again. In this podcast we go through Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. As selected by a panel of music critics, journalists and musicians and published in 2003. Nuala Walsh is a strategic adviser with MindEquity, working with organizations to create reputation, commercial and cultural change. She is a global leader, an award-winning marketeer, and a behavioral scientist. Nuala has nearly 3 decades of strategic, commercial, and governance experience in asset management, investment banking, and consulting. All her strategic solutions are informed by decision science & behavioral frameworks. Nuala is also the Non-Executive Director of GAABS, the Vice-Chair of UN Women, and she has been the Chief Marketing Officer, Standard Life Aberdeen. In short, she’s a remarkable person whose insights are worth paying attention to as both a practitioner and a researcher. We spoke with Nuala recently about some investigations she completed on two topics. The first was to understand the impact that fake news has on our ‘remembering’ self. What she discovered is that our memories don’t discriminate between true or false information – we tend to remember it all roughly the same way, when we believe it at the start. The second area we discussed was about whistleblowers in modern corporations. Without the proper environment, whistleblowers don’t act or can be maltreated within an organization when they do raise their hands. Nuala’s got some ideas on how to change that. Here’s her list of tips for improving your corporate culture to support whistleblowers: Reframe. The word whistleblowing is a negative word, so reframing it as “speaking up” could be more positive. There's a shift in how companies can rewrite how they message to employees. Economic. Scandalized companies earn 4% less than firms that have not experienced major scandals. So by definition, a company could earn 4% more if it’s clean and could impact employees' wages should they go to another firm. Rewards. Rewarding employees with relevant incentives and she is quick to recommend against financial, such as appropriately recognizing people, sharing salient stories of courage, talking about people in the company, people outside the company as role models…all of these can contribute positively to better company culture. By taking bad behavior out of the shadows or removing the Social Norming effect of removing it from secrecy is a powerful tool. But you can't just point to somebody internally to highlight their courage, leaders need to appropriately highlight teams that have called out errors that prevented disasters. It’s best to not pinpoint an individual because of personal risk and a lot of potential threats. Make it Normal. Employees won’t speak up in a dangerous work environment. The more you make the environment open and communal and part of the cultural norm, the less fear that is induced on people and the greater likelihood they’ll point out bad behavior when it happens. Who's that Girl? It's Annie Lennox! Halloween month continues so come find your witchy anthems as we jam through Annie's discography this week with superfan, Spindle A. Webb. We celebrate the changing identities of this story-teller, Drag King, activist, legendary Diva while also learning how she guided a young queer from Little Bird to full fledged Wonder Woman! So get ready because Here Come the Rain Again and we are gonna Paint A Rumor all over the goth clubs of West Hollywood. Come learn that Love is Strange, everything is fiction and deep down underneath...we're all just robots.
The Metebelis Two Ace retrospective continues this week with a discussion about The Genocide Machine, which was the second Big Finish release to feature Ace. The story is very reminiscent of a Terry Nation story with all that entails. So, a jungle planet with Daleks and rather one-dimensional supporting characters. With the Daleks return for the first time since Remembrance was this story able to deliver? The opening sound is a gentle rain fall. Closing music is the Eurythmics' song "Here Comes the Rain Again" from 1983.
Kaytie and I spoke with A Dead Desire's Moroni Silva about how the band formed, recovering from addiction, and his newly released cover of the Eurythmics’ “Here Comes the Rain Again" featuring late All That Remains guitarist Oli Herbert. It turns out that Moroni and Oli came up with the idea of covering the Eurythmics' song while having a few drinks one night. They recorded a small part of the song on Moroni's phone before eventually covering the track.

Mix) - Nick Straker Notes and other random things: Well, if the new episode hadn't already tipped you off ... I'm back! Please, no applause (surely none of you applauded). It was great to get out of town for a week even though about a third of the trip was spent in the car. Yup. About 2200 miles in total. But if you've been keeping up with these podcasts you've probably come across several posts that discuss road trips. Personally, I enjoy them. There's nothing quite like watching unfamiliar scenery float by in parallax while skirting past 18-wheelers in a downpour. In all seriousness, it's nice to witness different topography, different natural wonders, different roadkill and take in the subtle differences of a McDonald's cheeseburger that was constructed in backwoods America versus that of the big city. In case you were wondering, it tastes like it has better family values ... and a dash more possum. But the real point of taking a vacation is to come back re-energized which, if you look at the music selection in this episode, you can clearly see that I have (unless you don't know any of these songs in which case you'll have to take my word for it and then listen for yourself!) This set is positively high energy through and through with a delicate balance of 80s and 90s; major and minor keys; some meat and in one or two cases a lot of cheese (I'm looking at you, Nick Straker ... but don't think I haven't glanced more than once in your direction too, Phil Oakey). But I like cheese, which is why songs like Together in Electric Dreams and Leaving on a Midnight Plane surface in this podcast. And just so you know, Nick and Phil, I'm going to discuss you guys first to show there are no hard feelings. Nick Straker was originally the keyboardist for a band called New Musik. Formed in 1977, the band was initially called The End of the World and was conceived mainly as a casual jam session outfit for four London-based school mates: singer Tony Mansfield, bassist Tony Hibbert, drummer Phil Towner (who drummed on the Buggles MTV-launching track Video Killed the Radio Star) and Straker. The band was one of the first to blend electronic instruments with traditional ones, creating an irresistible pop sound with superb melodies and unrelenting hooks. Why they were never able to make bigger waves on the commercial scene still baffles many music critics and historians. Mansfield, however, went on to become a big-time producer working with early 80s bands like a-ha, Vicious Pink, B-52's and After the Fire among others. Straker departed New Musik before the release of their first single choosing to pursue a solo career. He scored several hits, including A Little Bit of Jazz, which reached #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1981 and A Walk in the Park, which hit #20 on the UK Singles Chart in 1980. The track here is the excellent (and cheesy!) Razormaid! mix of Leaving on a Midnight Plane. It originally appeared on the A Walk in the Park album and peaked at #61 on the UK Singles Chart in 1980. Together in Electric Dreams is an interesting case study in musical perception. Often associated with The Human League, the track is really a Giorgio Moroder creation with lead singer of THL, Phil Oakey, contributing vocals. It's no surprise that THL often gets most of the credit because they were still near the apex of their popularity in 1984 when the song was initially released. The track was written for the film Electric Dreams, the first full-length feature film by Steve Barron. Barron made his mark directing some pretty high-profile music videos during the early 80s, including THL's international smash hit Don't You Want Me. The funny thing is, he intended Electric Dreams as a way of capturing the massive success of Flashdance from the year before. Yes ... Flashdance! Because that film used music from Moroder, Barron decided to employ Moroder as the music director for his new film. He wanted something heart-stirring to run during the final credits and a classic 80s track was born. The song would surface on a collaborative album by Moroder and Oakey the following year. This extended version is taken from an album of THL rarities and remixes, which certainly won't help the perception that this song is not a THL original. The fact that I credited it as THL (since it was taken from a THL album) won't help either. But I'm going to do something about that Giorgio Moroder for the remainder of the write-up Giorgio Moroder. I just hope it will set the record straight Giorgio Moroder about where some of the credit should go. I'm still planning to cover one or two more of the bands in this podcast. However, I thought I'd pass this on: it's information about the new Erasure album I hinted at in an eariler episode. The album already dropped in the UK, but for those of us stateside, the release date is Tuesday, October 11. I can't wait! I guess if it comes down to the writing or the music, I'll err on the side of the music because that's what this podcast is really about. So, I'm going to begin work on a new podcast with the bit of free time I have and end this one here. I'm sure these bands will return in the future and I can write about them at that time. Now, I realize the irony of writing a paragraph to tell you I don't have time to write anymore on this episode, so you don't have to bother pointing that out. Hold tight for another episode coming soon! Cheers!
