Many of New Zealand's biggest musicians are boycotting Spotify and ditching the platform amid accusations of exploitation. Tiki Taane and The Bats are among the big names getting behind Boycott Spotify NZ and other Kiwi bands like Carb on Carb, Synthetic Children and Recitals have signed the statement calling for better treatment. Taane has cited greed, corruption and investment in European defence technology company Helsing as some of the key reasons why he's walking away. "I love music, I love creating music, but I also have to take a stand against corruption, against greed, against war, against murder - the easiest thing for me to do to help support that is to take my music off the platform and cancel my subscription." These sources collectively explain the foundational principles of contract law, particularly focusing on offer and acceptance. They detail the six-step process for drafting effective legal contracts, from determining substance and analyzing the audience to organizing, writing, designing, and evaluating the document. The texts also differentiate between unilateral and bilateral contracts, clarifying how each is formed and accepted, with special attention to scenarios like the "Battle of the Forms" and the mailbox rule. Furthermore, the documents highlight the legal requirements and best practices for contract clauses, emphasizing clarity, consistency, and adherence to legal standards to prevent disputes and ensure enforceability. The "objective theory of assent" means that courts interpret a party's intent to contract based on their outward words and conduct, not their hidden subjective thoughts. This is important because it allows parties to rely on external manifestations of agreement, promoting certainty and predictability in contract formation. An "offer" is a definite proposal showing a clear intention to be bound upon acceptance, like "I'll sell my car for $5,000." An "invitation to treat" is merely an invitation to negotiate or make an offer, such as goods displayed with a price tag in a store. In a "unilateral contract," acceptance occurs through the completion of a specific act or performance, with only one promise made (e.g., a reward for finding a lost pet). In contrast, a "bilateral contract" involves an exchange of promises between two parties, and acceptance is typically a promise in return. The "Mailbox Rule" states that an acceptance is effective the moment it is dispatched (e.g., mailed), rather than when received by the offeror. A key exception is that it generally does not apply to option contracts, where acceptance must be received to be effective.A "counteroffer" is a response to an offer that materially changes its original terms. Under common law's "mirror image rule," a counteroffer automatically terminates the original offer, meaning it can no longer be accepted. An offer can be terminated by operation of law due to the death or mental incapacity of either party, the destruction of the contract's subject matter, or if the subject matter becomes illegal before acceptance.Under UCC § 2-205, a "firm offer" can be made irrevocable if it is made by a merchant, in a signed writing, and assures that the offer will be held open for a stated period, not exceeding three months. The "Battle of the Forms" arises when parties exchange standard business forms with conflicting terms. UCC § 2-207 attempts to form a contract despite non-matching terms, unlike common law's "mirror image rule" which would treat such a response as a counteroffer.Recitals, or premises, state background information that forms the foundation for the contract. Their purposes include clarifying the parties' intent (e.g., reasons for entering the contract) and bolstering the importance of certain conditions.Proper punctuation is crucial in contract drafting because incorrect or misplaced punctuation can create ambiguity, leading to different interpretations of contract terms and potentially resulting in costly legal disputes, as demonstrated by cases involving significant financial losses due to a single comma.

In 2018, Austrian trumpeter Selina Ott made history by becoming the first woman to win first prize in the 70-year history of the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. That landmark achievement launched a remarkable career that has taken her to concert halls around the world, performing both as a soloist and with major orchestras. Her debut album, Trumpet Concertos, was honored with the Opus Klassik Award in 2021, and she has since released two more acclaimed solo recordings. Though still early in her musical journey, Selina has already established herself as one of the leading voices of her generation. In this conversation, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Selina about some of the defining moments in her life and career so far. In part one, we begin with her recent experience performing Wynton Marsalis's Trumpet Concerto with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop. She shares what it was like to collaborate with Marsalis himself and how that experience left a lasting impact. We then reflect on her preparation for, and participation in, the ARD Munich competition—what it took to succeed, and how her life changed overnight following her win. From there, we rewind even further to talk about her early beginnings on the trumpet as a young girl, and the important influence of legendary trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger.[Subscriber Content] In part two, we shift our focus to the balance between orchestral and solo playing, and what it really means to be a well-rounded soloist in today's musical world. We also touch on Selina's relationship with social media and why she chooses to keep a relatively low profile online. One of the more unique aspects of her life outside of music is her passion for horses—she owns several—and we explore how that love for animals complements her musical life. Selina also gives us insight into how she chooses her concert repertoire, both for solo recitals and orchestral performances. And finally, I ask her what advice she would give to a 10-year-old girl dreaming of becoming a musician one day.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Fan Mail Me BrrrruuuuunnndenAccountability seems to be vanishing in our modern world, and we're tackling this troubling trend head-on. Through personal stories and cultural observations, we explore why so many people refuse to take responsibility for their actions. The episode opens with a powerful anecdote about a piano recital at age 30, where acknowledging a mistake in front of children created a safe space for everyone to be imperfect. This sets the stage for our conversation about how increasingly rare this simple act of owning our errors has become. We dissect possible causes behind this accountability crisis – from participation trophies that shield children from the reality of failure to a culture that rewards blame rather than growth. The conversation weaves through compelling parallels to sports, highlighting UConn women's basketball coach Gino Auriemma's team-oriented approach and Michael Jordan's perspective on failure as the foundation for success. Some of our most thought-provoking insights come during our discussion of parenting. Drawing from expert perspectives, we challenge parents to see themselves as shepherds rather than controllers, guiding children while accepting their inherent nature. This balanced approach fosters accountability without crushing individuality.Whether you're struggling with taking responsibility in your own life or frustrated by those who won't, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on why owning our mistakes isn't just the right thing to do – it's the pathway to genuine growth and success.
