Welcome back lovers of all things spooky and scary, to another episode of Surviving the Horror! Released in March 2012 and developed by Slant 6 in just one year's time, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is a much maligned and critiqued entry in the long standing survival horror franchise. Criticized for it's lack of polish, and disregard for the pillars of what makes up a classic Resident Evil title, Operation Raccoon City is certainly the black ship of the family. In fact, it seems that almost every time that Capcom tries to do something different in the multiplayer space with Resident Evil, the title is met with considerable challenges and fan feedback. Operation Raccoon City came from a different era of Capcom, one that hadn't seen the benefits of multiple successful titles released back to back as we've seen recently with the REmake treatments and things like Resident Evil Village. Indeed, as relayed by ORC's director Andrew Santos, Capcom was chasing a different crowd in 2012, the Call of Duty gamer. Releasing the same year as Resident Evil 6, Operation Raccoon City represented an attempt to tell a different kind of story in the Resident Evil universe, with new characters that could expand on the lore and events of the first few games. Was this attempt successful though? Well, that's a tough question to answer. Colin and Josh do their best to parse through the mechanics, story, design, and development of this misunderstood Resident Evil title. When considering the truncated development, and some of the clear love and attention to detail that went in to this title, perhaps some of the initial reactions and reviews were too harsh on the game. Come along with us on a journey through a chaotic warzone, littered with BOWs, waring political factions, and a sinister mega corporation hell bent on cleaning up any evidence of their involvement. It may not be the best Resident Evil title, but we think you'll have plenty of fun along the way. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! We will be back next month with September's game, Still Wakes the Deep!
The boys finally tackle the...other Resident Evil title released in 2011. Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City is the first ever Co-Op play through for the channel. Hello, my Chocobos and Cactuars! This week on NEP, we’ve got the simultaneous worst and best episode yet! We’ve got Jared of Avalanche Reviews guesting in, but Galen’s mic crapped out once or twice, so his commentary is a little light in a few spots. But Jared is here to get super nerdy with us about upscaling output video on retro consoles, as all three of us bond over Resident Evil and the best boys of YouTube. In particular, Jared talks about getting the best picture possible out of the SNES, N64 and GCN consoles; the Framemeister; and technical nonsense of video and retro graphics explained in easy-to-understand detail. If you’re enjoying NEP, please consider giving us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts, aka new iTunes. It’s incredibly helpful in getting us exposed to new listeners through algorithms, so we would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for listening! Timestamps 03:13 – Jared of Avalanche Reviews talks starting out on YouTube, how he grew his channel, what was the spark to start the Resident Evil Retrospective and his success story. Then we all bond over Resident Evil! 21:13 – Jared teaches us about upscaling video output on our old consoles, like the SNES, N64 and Gamecube. 36:42 – The struggles of being a YouTuber, streaming on twitch VS YouTube, and the algorithm gods. 52:28 – Astral Chain launches next week! Let’s talk impressions and thoughts with all the gameplay footage we’re getting out of Gamescom. Jared freaks out that Galen can go to a brick and mortar to rent games in 2019. Japanese game development over the years. 1:01:13 – The Witcher 3 aka the Switcher. And Jared dukes it out with the Switch. Getting over pride, admitting when you’re wrong, and taking opportunities to learn. 1:16:28 – Final Fantasy VIII Remaster. What QOL additions will we see? How the visuals stack up to a video output nerd like Jared. Also, using video games in Japanese as a means of learning written language. Oni’s beef with text and text boxes. 1:29:21 – Remothered sequel happening, and friendship forms through coincidental YouTube viewings, and mutual love for Thor High Heels. 1:32:24 – Indie World! Ori and the Blind Forest, Hotline Miami Collection, Superhot, so much more. And a lovely mention of Suda51 and how hit or miss he is, but we love creativity. More creative, crazy developers, please. Also, less of Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers. Superhot discussion leads into Labo VR talk, badly received games like Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Then why being objective about media is important, and admitting when things aren’t for you/your demographic though it may be for other people. 1:57:01 – Additional DLC, Destiny lore, SNES Drunk, Super Derek and trading games through the mail. Additional DLC Mischief Makers for Nintendo 64 – SNES Drunk https://youtu.be/G1LgGNBtFG8 My Name is Byf - Last Word & Thorn https://youtu.be/UDUMXgiuYiU Send us an email and we’ll discuss it! We decided to start a second show, the ErMac Mini-Sodes. These episodes are meant to be supplemental to our main podcasts, in hopes that the shorter episodes will attract more listeners. These episodes will typically be between 20 and 30 minutes, and we will generally speak about one topic, and Luke will be hosting (because he's smart). We start this new venture talking about the recent story that the writer of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City announced that the main protagonist is homosexual, so we decided to talk about how homosexual characters have been portrayed before, and how they should be portrayed in the future. We also play a game, and Luke is a jerk.

If the internet holds it together we’ll take our monthly look back at the game industry’s news headlines. Justin, Cole, Justin, and Christina determine if anything can hold its own against Nintendo console rumors and the PSN outage. Also, potatoes. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow Ethan is apparently allergic to headlines, but that doesn’t stop us from reliving the highlights(?) of April. That is if Cole ever stops talking about Ally McBeal long enough to let us get to video games. Hang with the Threesomes though and you’ll get a terrifying eel story as well. The On the Spot question gets tactical and pits our good friends Batman and Ezio against one another. Of course our headlines can’t avoid the Nintendo console rumors or the fact that to this date, PSN is still down. There’s plenty of other news to talk about though with free Alice, scary RE6 rumors, and more non-gaming content on your Xbox 360, among others. We tease our next Horrible All Nighter so be on the lookout for a date and game selection for our next online gaming night. The Cursed say goodbye to Christina for now as she heads back to California, but not before she can profess her love for the lemons of Portal 2. Let’s talk about something we aren’t close to being qualified for, remaking video games. Justin, Cole, Ethan, Gifford, and Christina throw out their ideas for and break your memories of X-COM, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Blast Corps, and Eternal Darkness. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow We’re not going to pretend that we know what we are talking about, but the fact is we love a lot of games and have ideas on what would make them better to us. Of course we can’t get to those ideas without goin off-topic first with our Threesomes of the Week and Christina’s adventure into voice acting against a 4 year-old. The On the Spot question asks if remakes should stick to their original’s genres which begs the question, what the hell happened to StarCraft: Ghost? In our first (of multiple) Remake It So discussion the cast delves into some dangerous territory by attempting to infuse some fresh ideas into fix some classics in Zelda and Final Fantasy. Then we return to the game that started this topic on the site originally by going insane over Eternal Darkness once again. We let you know what to expect for the Horrible Night Out this Friday and ask for your input into choosing a game for our next Horrible All Nighter. Cole takes us home by getting a little too excited about all of these new fighting games and Street Fighter X Tekken. A new podcast for a new issue: the team kicks off with our exclusive hands-on report of the brilliant Shadows of the Damned, followed by Batman, Spider-Man, word on the next Grand Theft Auto and our initial take on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.
News fight! Justin, Cole, Ethan, and Gifford find more than a few headlines worth discussing from last month, but do any of them matter? 3DS, Resident Evil, THQ, PAX East, cannibals, and others get the attention they rightfully deserve. Send in your questions to simon@horriblenight.com or @TheHorribleShow So what exactly happened in the video game industry in March and was any of it important? We’ll tell you, that is once we get through our Threesomes of the Week and learn about Wrestlemania and cannibalism. Our On the Spot question uses a very dirty that make Justin’s skin crawl – Will there or has there been a successful “transmedia” partnership? All signs point to BioWare, but have these ideas already peaked? Our monthly headlines discussion strikes a few nerves when it comes to the Nintendo 3DS and Metacritic affecting THQ stocks, and Ethan is more than ready for a new Resident Evil game. Event details are now up for our Horrible Night Out at Net Heads on April 15th, you can RSVP on our Facebook event page.
