My guest today is a Canadian video game designer and director. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with an MFA in creative writing, he joined Ubisoft Montreal where he co-wrote the script for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. In 2005 he directed a sequel to that game, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and three years later released the oppressive and acclaimed sandbox shooter, Far Cry 2. In 2010 he left Ubisoft and joined LucasArts, then Valve, then Amazon Game Studios, before finally returning to Canada to work as creative director on the Ubisoft game Watch Dogs: Legion. A keen thinker on video games, my guest coined the term ‘ludonarrative dissonance' to describe when a game's story and mechanics sit at odds with one another. Today, he serves as creative lead at Ubisoft Montreal, the studio he first joined as a graduate, where is he working on Assassin's Creed Infinity.  Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. Amon Tobin on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 12/14/21 About Amon Tobin - Amȯn Tȯbin was born in Brazil, but spent his formative years in the UK. He came up through the breakdancing and hip-hop scenes in the 1980s, and the jungle and drum and bass scenes of the 1990s, before establishing a sound and a style that was singularly his own. He first emerged with a string of 12" singles on the small London label 9Bar Records, and his breakthrough first album, Adventures in Foam, led to his signing to Ninja Tune in 1996. For the next several years, he pushed the boundaries of found sound to the limits in acclaimed albums such as Bricolage (1997), Permutation (1998), Supermodified (2000), and out from out Where (2002), and pushed other compositional tactics forward in albums like Foley Room (2007) and ISAM (2011). Foley Room explored the role of sound design and field recordings, culminating in an acclaimed performance at the birthplace of musique concrete, the GRM in Paris. He also produced several original scores, ranging from the cult film Taxidermia to the video game blockbuster Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and created numerous dancefloor-oriented singles and albums under the alias Two Fingers. Tobin's 2011 album ISAM, an acronym for "Invented Sound Applied to Music," utilized advanced synthesis processing and production techniques traditionally reserved for sound design in film. It proved an influential contribution towards recent approaches to music production in electronic music. It also paved the way for a radically new kind of audiovisual performance. Hailed by major media outlets including Wired, Rolling Stone, NPR, and many others around the world, ISAM received global acclaim as a landmark in audiovisual performance. Projection mapping, which had been the domain of static and mostly corporate visual showcases, was configured for the first time to uniquely narrate the musical performance of an album. ISAM reshaped audience's expectations of electronic music concerts, and premiered at some of the world's most prestigious venues, from the Sydney opera House to the olympia in Paris to the London Hammersmith, and many international festivals including Sonar, MUTEK and Moogfest. Los más habituales ya conocéis la sección de Andrés Miguel (Cyberio): Aquel Maravilloso... En ella, nos trasladamos a 16 años antes, con respecto al momento en el que se emite el programa. Y lo hacemos de forma que repasamos todo lo que ocurrió aquel mes en nuestro territorio, tanto en anécdotas, como en música, cine/series y, por supuesto juegos. Siempre, con algún título especial seleccionado al que le damos la bienvenida al mundo retro. Sin embargo, este episodio es diferente. Si os fijasteis en el monográfico Retro de Worms (num. 20), ya tuvimos sección hablando de marzo de 2005. Entonces nos limitamos a hablar de juegos y dimos la bienvenida retro a Metal Gear Solid 3 y a Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Y además, anunciamos alguna que otra sorpresa en la descripción de ese programa. Pues bien, en este Standalone seguimos con marzo de 2005, pero esta vez con la versión más amplia, hablando de música, cine, series... Y, de paso, con un tema grande que no tuvimos tiempo de tocar: Nintendo DS. La consola también fue uno de los lanzamientos importantes de aquel mes. Y le damos la bienvenida al mundo retro hablando del propio lanzamiento, de los juegos de su catálogo inicial, de las bondades de la consola, de su historia, de datos de todo tipo y un montón más de sorpresas. La verdad es que los Worms también llevan muchos años acompañándonos. Pero estos no buscan el camino a casa, sino exterminar al resto de gusanos. En este programa, repasamos no solo el juego original, sino también su gran secuela: Armageddon, que para muchos es la mejor entrega de la historia. Además, también hablamos, en general, de nuestros recuerdos con la franquicia, de la evolución que ha tenido, o de las mecánicas que la hacen única. Por si fuera poco, en este programa regresa una de vuestras secciones favoritas. Hablamos de "Aquel Maravilloso", que en esta ocasión da la bienvenida al mundo retro a dos grandes juegos de sigilo que llegaron en marzo de 2005. In Games Played, Richard breaks out the 3DS for Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion. He gives the 240p test suite a go using the Dreamcast to attempt to correct a CRT's geometry. This week, hosts Josh and Bryan are joined by friend of the show and debut guest, Dave Cox, who hosts the Monster Dear Monster and Crouching Tiger Hidden Podcast shows, both of which are very much worth listening to! After the customary weather report, we discuss the (unsurprising, yet still bold) news that Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered is getting a stand alone release, the fact that Atari is due to be releasing a brand new piece of hardware, Josh flies off the handle about Hitman, YET AGAIN, and urges people to play it because he's a broken record. Please play it. We also mention the Steam sale and how nobody has any money left now. After a quick check in with Josh's thoughts on E3, we get into what we've been playing which includes The Surge, Black, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Monolith, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Friday the 13th and last, but not least, Sine Mora.
