--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/malhete-podcast/message

In the middle of the twentieth century, in South Africa, Nelson Mandela organized a group of revolutionary freedom fighters to openly denounce the racist apartheid regime. Mandela and MK (Umkhonto we Sizwe) embarked on a dangerous, but revolutionary campaign of sabotage that fueled the burgeoning global anti-apartheid struggle. In Spear: Mandela and the Revolutionaries (Ohio University Press, 2022) Paul Landau explores the pivotal years that led up to the Rivonia trial in which Mandela was given a life sentence in prison while many of his comrades were either killed, imprisoned or exiled. Landau does this by exploring Mandela's leadership role in MK as well as by highlighting the motives and actions of the people around him. Landau complicates the whitewashed “grandpa” figure so many of us have come to know Mandela to be. He gives us a detailed glimpse into the mind of the revolutionary and oftentimes violent Nelson Mandela that we so anxiously want to know. Robrecus Toles is a Ph.D. student in the Department of History at The University of Mississippi. His research focuses on The Council of Federated Organizations and the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi between the years 1961-1965. He lives in Mississippi with his wife and three kids. After the Rivonia Circle Think Tank announced that it is launching a political movement to run in the 2024 elections, another player will be in the national polls. According to the former editor and chairman of Rivonia Circle, Songezo Zibi, the organisation would not become a political party be instead started a campaign with the hashtag #SAMustRise that would appear on the ballot in the upcoming elections. "A political movement needs to be concerned with local issues. Whether there is a vote or not, we constantly implement, develop, and think of solutions at the community level." Zibi stated in an interview with Radio Islam International that the movement aims to include leaders with a proven track record of offering solutions rather than making promises.
Guest: Songezo Zibi | Chairman at Rivonia Cricle Songezo Zibu joins John to discuss a recent survey of 2000 registered South African voters by the Rivonia circle that has indicated that if any election were held today, the ANC's share of the vote would drop to 41% from the 57,5% that it obtained in the 2019 National Election.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The term “voter apathy” has become part of the common political discourse and is often used to give the impression that voters do not vote due to political ignorance or carelessness. Radio Islam International discussed with The Rivonia Circle's Songezo Zibi his latest opinion piece findings after almost a year of fieldwork, such as focus groups, surveys, community meetings, and online discussions. According to Songezo, he is convinced voter abstention is typically a very deliberate political choice.

City-Zen is a community project registered as a Non-Profit Organisation, with the aim of creating cleaner, greener, and safer cities. Dan started out cleaning the Rivonia section of the Sandspruit River, spending 10 years cutting back growth and bush along the river banks to create the pristine environment it is today, which is now home to fish, ducks, walking and bike trails and is secured with cameras. During this time, Najen was actively working in the community tackling crime and looking for alternate ways to reduce crime through the creation of jobs for the unemployed and homeless. I spoke to Najen Naidoo about the project, listen here:

Guest: Nicholas Wolpe Heritage month begins as one of South Africa's foremost national heritage sites has announced the decision to close its doors indefinitely. It has stood to exhibit extraordinary artifacts that tell the story of the journey to democracy in South Africa as well as to stand testament to it. Liliesleaf is an 18,000sqm property in Rivonia, Sandton. It served as the secret for the ANC, SACP, Umkhonto we Sizwe and the Congress Alliance, between 1961 and 1963. It was a police raid of Liliesleaf on July 11, 1963, that set the infamous Rivonia Trial in motion. Trust founder and chief executive Nicholas Wolpe, a descendant of one of the Rivonia accused, has been struggling to secure operational funding since 2009. He deems the closure and the lack of support to be a dismal injustice. He said the coronavirus pandemic further exacerbated the financial woes of the liberation farm and other cultural and heritage sites in the sector. As a cricketer, Jeremy Snape achieved international honours with England as well as captaining county side Leicestershire, but it's perhaps for his work in sports performance that he's best known for these days. Post playing career Jeremy founded Sporting Edge, a company specialising in inspiring individuals, leaders and teams to deliver their best and this was the crux of the conversation when we met. Jeremy was great company and his wealth of experience energised the conversation. We had a fascinating chat covering so many topics within performance, narrowing in on the mental side, through to the performance of teams, athletes and managing Mavericks, but we started by talking about selflessness and as the perfect example, a group called the ‘Rivonia 8' the name given to those that were sentenced alongside Nelson Mandela, to serve a large part of their lives in prison on Robben Island. The podcast's first Pulitzer Prize-winning guest! (/brag), author Glenn Frankel joins me (and, once again, Ted Haycraft) to discuss his new book, the third and final of his trilogy of cowboy movies and the historical era from which they emerged — 1969's Best Picture Oscar winner and its only X-rated one, Midnight Cowboy. On this episode, we talk:- why Frankel was drawn to the movie as a way to write about the homophobia and New York City of the era;- how his book works as one of the first biographies of Cowboy novelist James Leo Herlihy (and a touching one as well);- the nuts and bolts of researching and writing a book like this;- and Frankel's remarkably concise, compartmentalized, yet encyclopedic style of writing the biography of a film's creation, life, and legacy.Also:- the intensity and serendipity of the chemistry between Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman;- the story of why United Artist's head Arthur Krim actually secretly rejected Cowboy's initial R-rating;- why director John Schlesinger deserves to be considered in the pantheon of Bogdanovich, Coppola, or Scorsese;- and why, despite its Best Picture Oscar, why Midnight Cowboy is to this day an underrated film.Glenn Frankel is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of two other books on film and the eras in which they were made: The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend and High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic. A former Washington Post reporter and bureau chief in London, South Africa, and Jerusalem, his other books include Beyond the Promised Land: Jews and Arabs on the Hard Road to a New Israel and Rivonia's Children: Three Families and the Cost of Conscience in White South Africa. You can find out more at his website.Ted Haycraft is film critic for Evansville's WFIE-14 and co-hosts Cinema Chat on its Midday show. He can also be found on Cinema Chat's Facebook page.Shooting Midnight Cowboy is published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and is available online or at brick-and-mortar bookstores. Located in Rivonia, Liliesleaf farm was bought as a safe house for anti-apartheid activists in the 1960s. It served as the secret headquarters of not only the ANC, but the SACP and Umkhonto we Sizwe too. Nelson Mandela, posing as a domestic worker, used it as a hideout. Now almost 60 years later, despite efforts to secure funding, the site that has been turned into a museum is in danger. CEO of Liliesleaf, Nic Wolpe - whose father was involved in the original sale of the site - is taking on the struggle of saving this heritage site with a funding campaign. This comes amid reports that several other sites linked to the anti-apartheid movement - including some of the homes Nelson Mandela occupied - are falling into disrepair. Wolpe told BizNews about his campaign to raise R10 million to save Liliesleaf in the short term.

The Faction Election War Won (13) (Audio) White Angels Conquer the Dark Angels Marie Kelton 1-8-21 (David’s notes in red) During the meeting last night, I saw a warrior angel with a sword and he told me" I've come to help you my lady". I asked him "help me with what?”. The angel replied, “With the heaviness and the oppression you were feeling. (She Could be representing the Bride here) I then saw what looked like a dementor from the movie Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. (H.P. is full of witchcraft and sorcery and people receive demons from this stuff. The enemy we are facing are into this witchcraft big time. Through spiritual warfare described in this dream we will defeat the enemies spiritual and physical.). The dementor looks like a black skeleton with a black cloak covering its body. The dementor floats in the air (Like demons), it causes pain by sucking the life out of people to the point where their only left with bad memories. (The witchcraft demons are making war against the minds of people. The enemies are overtaken by them. Cant you tell?) After the vision at the bottom I would see the angel that talked with me stab the dementor with his sword which made a lighting effect throughout the dementor's body causing it to scream in pain and go away, but every time I would agree with the spirit of depression etc. the wound in the dementor would heal and it would try to hover over me again. (If we agree with the curse, the mind of the flesh, sickness, possession, etc, we give them power. God says "Be transformed by the renewing of your minds”. Agree with the Bible.) When we were singing, the battle belongs to the Lord. I had an open vision, I saw a black horse with a dark angel on it to my right and I saw a white horse with a white angel on it to my left. They were charging toward each other. (I.e. the white angel was charging towards the right and the dark angel was charging toward the left. This represents the opposing angelic forces we are dealing with in the factions in. the church and state.). I saw this twice. Then I saw the dark angel on the black horse turn around and leave, with the white angel charging after it. (Victory over the enemies) Then I looked up at the ceiling and saw a bunch of white angels coming from the left and a bunch of dark angels coming from the right. Flying towards each other. The dark angels turned around and flew out of the house. (God is saying get on the right side, do spiritual warfare, pray, and we will win.) During those visions I had a black and white vision of me in the throne room on my knees with a head covering on (Sign of submission to the Lord), while Jesus was on the throne, I was crying to him about something. This verse came to mind: Est. 8:3 And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. After this I saw the angel that talked with me stab the dementor with his sword which made a lighting effect throughout the dementor's body causing it to scream in pain and go away. We will win! The charge from the left and right is on. Bind the demons. Special Ops went into the offices of D-S lawmakers who ran to their tunnels when the An-ti-fa B-L-M put on their fal-se fl-ag show in the capital. The lawmakers were running the coupe from their laptops which the Special Ops collected with evidence. We are hearing Martial Law is at the door. Have food, water, money, and fuel to last 2-3 weeks while the loyal forces are cleaning house. Keep your tanks topped off and your phones and radios charged up. I believe the Jan 20 inauguration will not take place, many forces have been called to the capitol. The D-S An-ti-fa/B-L-M war has already begun. They are shooting people and will burn churches and prominent peoples homes, etc. As we have been told the Lord will use them to bring down the false leadership of the Churches as Babylon took down the leadership of apostate Jerusalem. Things will look bad but the big victory will come at the end by the saints prayers and warfare and the coming of the Lord in His man-child leadership when the earthquakes and P-X come. The M-S-M was notified by the FCC that they are to produce President Trumps speeches or they will lose their licenses. Twitter, Facebook, and Google has shut the administration out. We will win! Jesus said, What we bind on earth is bound in heaven and what we loose on earth is loosed in heaven. Confess sins and Call upon the Lord to be our strength, wisdom, and to do warfare through us. Bind the forces of darkness. Stand fast and decree the end from the beginning. Send the angel forces to cast down the enemies. Heb 1:13-14 But of which of the angels hath he said at any time, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit salvation? Bind the witches and Satanists. Decree the fall of Com-mu-ni-sm in this country and the CCP, of faction, of lies, of slander, of deception, of the antichrist leftist forces of the media and tech giants. Send confusion in the camp of the enemies. Send the enemies against the enemies. Cast down An-ti-fa, B-L-M, anarchists, leftist government leaders, and all traitors in the government, industry, the military, etc. Use your born again imagination to see them fall. Send salvation, wisdom, strength, endurance, revelation, provision, and protection to the right. And when you do these things hold fast the confession of your hope that it waver not for He is faithful that promised. Do not be moved by what you see. Move everything you do see. As the Father sent Jesus, He sends you. Exercise your authority for there is no one else to do it. We will win as you do these things and endure to the end. We have a Psalm 91 Passover. We refuse these demons and their possessed forces to take this country. Fight, war, and win in Jesus name. Don't be moved by what you see, just by the Word of the Lord. President Trump and Melania Escape Destruction Claire Pienaar - 1/7/21 (David’s notes in red) After praying for President Trump and Melania before going to bed. I asked the Lord to reveal more of what's going on to me, so that I have more knowledge and will be able to better discern in the coming days. I dreamed I was on a high cliff rock overlooking a city below. I was right on the edge of the ledge of the cliff-face, on a blue double-camp chair. I was sitting with Melania Trump, holding her hand as I was praying with and for her. Melania had a beautiful rose-champagne coloured satin dress on, and we held hands. My hand was as beautiful as her hand – which shocked me. (A spiritual parallel since the Man-child and Bride in the Church is like President Trump and Melania in the natural.) (We take those we pray and intercede for into the rest by faith. And the bride, represented by myself, is quickly becoming so beautiful that she almost does not recognize herself. Jesus in manifesting in his people.). Riaan and Donald Trump were behind me, in the bushes – away from the edge of the cliff face. They were talking together. Riaan was explaining something to him. (Like Daniel and Joseph were types of the Man-child who advised the King.) I motioned to them to come look at the city below; it was orange and pink. (meaning warning and Sodom). I couldn’t tell if it was fire or sunset, but it took my breath away. The city looked like Hollywood (Sodom) or some such sprawling type city with not too many skyscrapers, etc. Donald Trump would not come past the back of my chair. He was finished – tired and fearful. (So many turned against the US and himself. Pray for him and he will make an even greater President. I believe he will run also for President of the New Republic and win. He has been greatly humbled by so many Judas’ and has lost self confidence. Also he is being humbled before the world many of whom worshipped him as god. God will not share His glory with another. This humbling may well make him more powerful. In his weakness God will be strong. 2Co 12:9-10 And he hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. (In the end the final victory over enemies will be seen as God and not man. Salvation from enemies does not come by man’s works but by God’s grace. The world needs to know this. Israel at the Red Sea was weak and God showed himself strong so that even the nations revered him for parting the Sea and taking down an army.) He stood a little ways away. I turned and said to him, “I love you, President Trump. I love you Donald” (meaning: ruler of the world). As I said this, he became younger and looked vibrant like the 1980s Donald I remember seeing in magazine pictures as a child. He said, “I don’t know that that’s enough” and I replied, “My love is going to have to be enough for you. It’s perfect love”. Then Riaan said, “We’ve got to go”. And I said, “Come, we’ll take you and Melania with us”. (A confirmation of love 3 times, just like Peter did with Jesus). We left the cliff-face and the blue double-camp chair, and we got into the silver van. We drove to a building, and I said to Donald Trump, “Now, you’ll go inside. They’re all waiting for you. The speeches have started”. (I remember knowing this building in my dream, but then I forgot about it until I shared the dream with Riaan later. I said to Riaan when I awoke: “It was the pentagon. I know because I’ve been there before”. I don’t even know if the pentagon is left/right/deep-state/CCP.) (Its a little of all of these) All I know is that in my dream he was in a safe section that could not be destroyed. We were waiting for the Pentagon to come under some destructive physical change; like a great shaking, eruption or explosion. (This appears to say that the Pentagon will be destroyed but President Trump will survive. We have shared dreams and words where DC was shaken severely and the buildings fell on the occupants and God was saying he would destroy the wicked and a new more righteous government would be established. We have had three dreams about the house falling in. This dream shows that the Military faction will fall too by the hand of God). President Trump went in a side door, and I went in, in the spirit for a second to see him appear to a room of people. He was humble, and quiet, but ready to deliver a speech. I was then back outside with Riaan in the van. Riaan and I drove away quickly, taking a side road into an area I know to be River Club near Rivonia in South Africa. (Rivonia is where the communist Nelson Mandela was sentenced in what is known as the Rivonia Trial in 1962-63, where he and 12 others were accused under the Sabotage Act of sabotage and attempting to over-throw the SA government. At the time it carried the death penalty.) (Note: they went away quickly from DC to SA. Trump too has been accused of attempting to overthrow the government and threatened with prosecution but Nelson became President after this and this shows Trump will be too.) (River Club perhaps denotes that only those who are “part of the club of the River of Life” are privy to be spared the coming destruction?). We were waiting and we were silent. I said to Riaan, “Are we far enough away from the destruction?” and he replied “It’s going to be so big and bright, we can’t really escape it but we are protected by the Most High”. (They cant escape it on the other side of the earth? Thats a shaking from D.C. to S.A. This is probably the shaking spoke of by Paul and Haggai where God said, Once more will I shake the heaven and the earth. You and I need to be ready for a Passover of destruction that will sweep away kingdoms including the apostate Church. Then we will go to the wilderness. In Haggai when the Man-child Zerubbabel began to rebuild the Kingdom of God on earth there was a great shaking of heaven and earth that will overthrew the throne of kingdoms of men in Haggai 2:20-23. It is mentioned here that this would be like an overthrow of the chariots and their riders (the factions of Church and state will fall at our Red Sea. The Egyptian historians recorded that they looked up and saw the Destroyer, their name for Planet X. This system is being guided by the Lord and is coming to overthrow those who want to bring us into communistic bondage. See Sandy’s dream below and Lakeisha’s dream on 12/21/20 of the mini Nemesis solar system, which includes Planet X that passed through wrecking the earth. Hag 2:20-23 And the word of Jehovah came the second time unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, 21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; 22 and I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. 23 In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith Jehovah, and will make thee as a signet; for I have chosen thee, saith Jehovah of hosts. ) I received 2 Ch12:2 by faith at random when I asked the Lord for a word for this dream, with my finger on “and it came to pass”. In context here’s verses 2-4: “And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam, that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem (At this time the apostate Church are spiritually under attack), because they had trespassed against Jehovah, 3 with twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen. And the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt: the Lubim, the Sukkiim, and the Ethiopians. 4 And he took the fortified cities which pertained to Judah, and came unto Jerusalem.” (The leadership humbled themselves in veses 5-9 so the King of Egypt was not permitted to completely destroy them but he plundered them of their valuables. This is speaking of the DS war against the Church in which they will burn many and plunder them and the leaders houses.) Riaan received by faith at random (whole of Ch12 for context) Ezekiel 12:28: Therefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: There shall none of my words be deferred any more, but the word which I shall speak shall be performed, saith the Lord Jehovah. Shaking Three Times Harder Sandy Shaw, 12/28/20 (Don and Merlene transcribed) (David’s notes in red) In a vision I was looking outside the window where the porch is. The curtains were open. I was watching the cats jumping and playing. All of a sudden I saw a river and the Lord said, “Mississippi.” Then all of a sudden, all of it was beginning to shake. (Sandy saw the New Madrid Quake that split the country down the Mississippi and dumped the Great Lakes into the Gulf.) It shook so hard I saw the water change direction. Then I heard the Lord say, “Three times harder!” Then the vision stoped. I asked the Lord, “Are you talking about the coming earthquake?” And I got three heads for “Yes.” I went and did a search and asked about the earthquake that changed the direction of the Mississippi. The first thing I read was it was an 8.8. I kept scrolling down and reading the last one which said, “It was a 9 or more.” When this testimony was sent to Me Jeff said they experienced a loud rumbling noise that came as a result of a 2.1 earthquake that happened not far from us. Merlene’s note. I have been hearing for the last week and many times a day from the song, Hosanna, verse 1, “The whole earth shakes, The whole earth shakes.” We sang this song last Monday night, the 4th. (This song was requested in our meeting on the 8th also. Neither time was it because of this particular verse.) On 1-9-21 Deb got. The ten men convicted either died during their imprisonment or spent 27 years of their lives in prison, most of them on Robben Island with Mandela. They emerged in the beginning of the 1990's to win their life's struggle for a multiracial democracy in South Africa in the 1994 election. 2020 has seen the passing of the last two living trialists and last defence lawyer, all of whom feature in the film. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to understand the complexities of the times and to engage with Sir Nick who has so much more to share that did not make the final cut.
Traditionally a lawyer's own views and political affiliation are irrelevant to the pursuit of the legal process. This lecture will examine - and celebrate - the work of lawyers who have crossed the usual lines and worked for political change. It will look at the life of South African advocate Bram Fischer, who defended Nelson Mandela at the Rivonia trial, and was himself prosecuted for sabotage and sentenced to life in prison. It will consider modern examples of lawyers paying a heavy price for political engagement, as well as the ethical issues which are engaged - how far can a lawyer go?A lecture by Thomas Grant QC 19 OctoberThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/political-lawyerGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Andrew Mlangeni was one of the ANC's first MK members to be trained in communist China and to meet “Chairman Mao” in 1962. Back home, Mlangeni disguised himself as a priest to recruit others into the armed struggle and became known as “Robot”. In mid-1964, Mlangeni and seven other Rivonia trialists – including Denis Goldberg, “Kathy” Kathrada, Raymond Mhlaba and Elias Motsoaledi – were convicted of conspiring to overthrow the apartheid government by violent revolution. For that, Mlangeni was jailed for over 26 years. He only tasted freedom again at the age of 64 in late 1989. Here's a snapshot of Andrew Mlangeni's life … in his own voice. This is the first of a two-part tribute to Denis Goldberg, hero of the struggle for the liberation of South Africa. It deals with his early life, how he became active in the fight against apartheid and the important contribution he made. It also covers the Rivonia trial, where Denis was sentenced with Mandela and others to life imprisonment, and with the twenty-two years he spent in prison. The article reflects on Denis approach to politics and life: his sacrifice, dedication and sense of comradeship also his thoughtfulness, sense of humour and boundless optimism. Denis contributed to The Socialist Correspondent and was a speaker at our conferences – he was an inspiration to us all and will be greatly missed.
I spoke with Senseis Lars Niehaus and Stephan Steyn about karate as a martial art. The discussion covered the purpose and development of karate, the focus of traditional karate, the guiding principles of karate (dojo kun), advice for parents and adult beginners, what it takes to be a good karateka and much more! Sensei Lars Bio: I started karate in or about September 1981 while studying at University in Pietermaritzburg. I joined the university karate club which was headed up by an instructor called Peter Schoerie who, in turn fell under Sensei Rob Ferriere. My introduction into the martial (and fighting) arts began at age 8 or 9 when my late father, a judoka, took me to boxing at the Hugenote Amateur Boxing Club under the tutelage of the late “Oom” Naas Botes. Oom Naas was a very strict and hard taskmaster but he loved his boys and taught us good values. The club was (and still is) situated at the Brixton Recreation Centre in south-western Johannesburg. I loved boxing. It was during this time that I met Sensei Stan Schmidt at the home of some boyhood friends of mine. Their father was also a judoka. It was then that the seed was planted that I wanted to do karate and remain involved in the fighting arts scene for the rest of my life. I had no idea how I would get there or anything like that, but I just knew it would happen. Why I stopped boxing (something I was very upset about) is because I had to go to boarding school in Kwa-Zulu Natal at the age of 11. Fast forward to sometime during 1981 and the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Pietermaritzburg Law Library – I was sitting next to another guy studying. During a short break, we introduced ourselves to one another and he turned out to be Peter Schoerie. For some reason, the conversation turned to fighting and karate. I told him that I wanted to start karate and had no idea where. He told me he was the one to talk to and that is where my karate career started. I was terrible at the beginning. In fact, when it came time to attempt my grade for 8th kyu (yellow belt) a few months later, Sensei Rob Ferriere – who scared the hell out of me with his Mexican Zapata-style moustache and French-Mauritian accent – I failed. Sensei Rob's comment “not ready yet…”. I did soldier on and, subsequent to moving to Johannesburg and being told by the late Sensei Derrick Geyer to report to the morning class (Sensei Stan Schmidt's Early Birds class) while I was still a purple belt in 1986, I attained the rank of shodan (first dan) in March 1987. I have continued training over the years and currently hold the rank of Godan (fifth dan) and run my own dojo (school) in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg. Sensei Stephan Bio: Stephan is a Japanese registered 4th Dan (Yondan) instructor in the World Shotokan Karate-do Federation with both national and international competition experience. His karate career spans over 26 years of training with top class senior Shotokan instructors. Highlights of the almost three decades include Shodan grading at the age of 16 (Malcolm Dorfman Sensei), representing South Africa at the KWF World Championships in Norway (2009), being part of the Student National WKF team competing at the student World championships in Slovakia (2012) and receiving Yondan from Hitoshi Kasuya Sensei in 2016. Stephan teaches at their Potchefstroom dojo with his wife, also a Yondan instructor. They believe in not only teaching the physical aspects of karate but also the use of karate principles to improve each student's abilities and the application of these principles in all areas of life. The dojo kun (training hall rules) - Guiding Principles of Karate: 1) Character Hitotsu, jinkaku kansei ni tsutomeru koto Strive for the perfection of character 2) Sincerity Hitotsu, makoto no michi wo mamoru koto Protect the way of the truth 3) Effort Hitotsu, doryoku no seishin wo yashinau koto Foster the effort of spirit 4) Etiquette Hitotsu, reigi wo omonzuru koto Respect the principles of etiquette 5) Self control Hitotsu, kekki no yū wo imashimuru koto Guard against impetuous courage “Karate is in your head”- Sensei Rob Ferriere: Some reading on psychology and getting into the “zone”: Karageorghis, C. Nelson Mandela was Accused Number One in the Rivonia Sabotage Trial at the Palace of Justice in Pretoria between October 1963 and June 1964. The Rivonia Trial is regarded as one of the most politically significant court cases in South Africa's history. During that eight-month trial, 45-year-old Mandela established himself as one of the country's foremost political figures. From the dock, he declared that he was prepared to die for a democratic and free South Africa. Sandra de Lange and Angie Kapelianis reflect on the Rivonia trial, its impact and significance. Government's "special official" funeral for the last Rivonia trialist to pass away, Andrew Mlangeni, will be held at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto THIS MORNING (Wednesday 29/07/2020) at about nine o'clock. Ninety-five-year-old Mlangeni died at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria last Wednesday (22/07/2020). He was one of the ANC's first MK members to be trained in China and to meet "Chairman Mao" in 1962. ANC veterans have criticised the governing party for having former president Jacob Zuma lead a memorial service paying tribute to the late struggle veteran Andrew Mlangeni. In a letter directed to the party's general manager, Febe Potgieter-Gqubule, the veterans bemoaned what they called the "unsuitability" of choosing Zuma to fulfil such an important role. Zuma was a keynote speaker at a virtual memorial honouring Mlangeni, the last remaining Rivonia trialist on Friday. Mlangeni, who celebrated his 95th birthday last month, died last Tuesday night at the 1 Military hospital in Pretoria after being admitted with abdominal complaint.

In the second hour we look at the recent passing of African National Congress (ANC) stalwart and Rivonia trial survivor Andrew Mlangeni in South Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has delivered a briefing on the status of the measures to address the pandemic inside the country. We will hear a briefing from World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Geneva. Finally we review the historic Detroit Black Rebellion of July 1967 on the 53rd anniversary of the event.
Tribute continue to pour in for Struggle stalwart and the last surviving Rivonia Trialist Andrew Mlangeni. This after the struggle veteran passed away overnight at the age of 95. He was admitted to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria last night following an abdominal complaint. Mlangeni was the last surviving Rivonia Trialist - who spent more than 20 years on Robben Island after his conviction at the Treason Trial in 1964. As we remember Mlangeni, our reporter Zinziswa Mani, takes a look at his journey.

The birth of the African National Congress’ armed wing, uMkhonto weSizwe ("Spear of the Nation") was a contested one. With large numbers of freedom fighters and, very little arms – Nelson Mandela’s comrades believed that the liberation movement, which sought to free South Africans from the damning grip of the Apartheid government, was a suicide mission. Only after much persuading, on the 16th December 1961, Nelson Mandela and his comrades formed “MK” and made the decision to take up arms in the fight for the dejected people of the country – a turning point in South African history.

Nicholas Wolpe grew up in exile in the United Kingdom. In the early 2000's he took the first steps that would eventually lead to the development of the site in Rivonia into the Liliesleaf Museum. Nicholas and I chatted about how the museum and its contents have evolved over time, and what a personal and cathartic journey it has been for him. Nicholas' father Harold was one of the 20 activists arrested on the site in July 11,1963. Nicholas is concerned that South Africans are losing their history and that knowledge about the liberation struggle is important in creating a national identity in South Africa. He says that the past is our link to the present and our future. Read more about the Lilliesleaf Museum at the link below. http://www.liliesleaf.co.za/
South African journalist Gavin Fischer gets exclusive access to newly available recordings from one of the most significant trials in modern political history – The Rivonia Trial. He has a personal connection. His great-uncle Bram Fischer led the defence of Nelson Mandela and his co-accused during the trial in the early 1960s. Gavin looks back on the trial and Bram's decision to use his white privilege to fight apartheid – rather than be part of it – with Denis Goldberg, one of the last survivors of the trial.
How the father of one of his presidential rivals helped Vladimir Putin to power. Kate Adie introduces this and other stories from correspondents around the world: Ahead of elections in March, Gabriel Gatehouse looks back at the rise of President Putin and speaks to one of his challengers - Ksenia Sobchak. Vladimir Hernandez returns to Venezuela to find a coffee now costs the same amount as he paid for his first flat, his relatives have lost weight and children are starving. It may be thousands of years since the ancient Phoenicians traversed the seas but in modern day Lebanon claims on Phoenicians identity are still controversial, discovers Fleur MacDonald. Gavin Fischer explores the recently released archive of recordings from the Rivonia trial in South Africa. His uncle defended Nelson Mandela and some of his co-accused. And Phoebe Smith enjoys the solitude of Greenland’s Arctic Circle Trail – but for how much longer will others be able to experience its unspoilt landscape she wonders.

The 87 year old Rivonia trialist's condition deteriorated sharply yesterday. Kathrada was hospitalised earlier this month for surgery related to blood clotting on the brain. He has since experienced several post-operation complications and has pneumonia affecting both lungs, rendering his condition serious. Sakina Kamwendo speaks to Executive Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Neeshan Balton, for the latest developments.

Fanon's action is within the context of post-war marked by the ideological struggle between the Western bloc led by the United States and the socialist bloc led by the Soviet Union. The division is clear between the capitalist and the socialist bloc, a third world emerging in the years 1950-1960: it is the third world that also claimed his place in international relations and its share in the wealth sharing the planet. Third World states for the first time its political existence in 1955 at the Bandung Conference, proclaiming his refusal of the bipolar world. Many Third World leaders appear simultaneously with the movements of national liberation struggle and lead a more radical in Africa, Asia, Latin America. The 1960s were marked by violent repression and assassinations of politicians representing the struggle of oppressed peoples: bloody crackdown in Indonesia in 1965 (500,000 dead), assassination of Patrice Lumumba in the Congo, murder of Che Guevara in Bolivia, killing Malcolm X, Martin Luther King in the U.S., assassination of Mehdi Ben Barka in Morocco, the Rivonia trial in South Africa where Nelson Mandela and his companions were sentenced to life imprisonment ... Fanon, FLN activist, editor of the newspaper El-Mujahid, will represent the Provisional Government of the Republic of Algeria, without, knowing the victory achieved this dream in which he contributed so much. He said that the release by the killing of the colonial system and the opening of another channel. Fanon, whether the madness, racism or the "universalism" confiscated by the powerful, do not stop, basically, trying to put "living together", like a transformation acts in situations where dominant and dominated each have everything to lose the perpetuation of existing orders and disorders. Fanon, this rebel, a rebel who fight tenaciously and flawless against domination by the powerful over the weak, enlightens us today about the relationship between fundamental one hand, the right to rebellion before a system social, political and economic plunges the world into disorder and secondly, a colonization of a new type. This, the relevance of the ideas of Fanon, which is currently enjoying a boom in many countries around the world, although France remains curiously aloof from this movement. The necessity of creation, liberation, the denial of a historical determinism that trace each time, before the colonized past and the "globalized" of today, forced to submit to market demands , determinism imposed by market forces and the rulers. This alternative was presented yesterday, between the capitalist and the socialist system, Fanon, calling for the opening of another channel. And today, the same alternative choice may be between a universalism recovered by the powerful in the context of the capitalist system is also said globalization and the struggle to build an international society based on solidarity, cooperation and friendship between peoples. It is this political aspect of Fanon-known - and which now turns to a news indisputable. Foundation Frantz Fanon, open structure and network, makes sense in this series of questions but also from the question posed by events and reading the world: What happens now at work Fanon, what about his presence and what he thought of building a "new humanity," a universal plural? The Foundation positioned networks (Caribbean, U.S. and Latin America, France-Europe, Middle East, West Africa and East Africa and Asia), working across the board, must ensure the presence of labor to and from Fanon and the world today. The peculiarity of the thought of Fanon, through the various lands he himself has invested, is to have them connected places that seemed distant from each other geographically (France, the Caribbean, the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa) or institutionally (the psychiatric hospital and politics). This work transversal networks should be used to connect places and compare his thoughts to the experiences, problems and issues of this and show the news because one of the dimensions of Fanon's thought is the "globality.
