Episode 78, part two of my conversation with Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, host of Open Investigation, about her missing childhood friend, Andy and what she discovered in her years researching his story. This is about missing and murdered children, and details about what led to their disappearance. Listen with care.Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, host of Open Investigation, the 9-part investigative podcast, and documentary filmmaker of "Have You Seen Andy?" shares her story of her missing childhood friend, Andy Puglisi, and the new discoveries in his almost 50-year-old unsolved case. This episode uncovers the tragic story of Andy Puglisi, who disappeared from a Lawrence, Massachusetts pool in 1976, revealing systemic failures in protecting vulnerable children. It explores classism, child exploitation, and the vital role of advocacy in creating safer communities for all children. The case of Andy Puglisi has haunted Lawrence, Massachusetts since 1976. With the invaluable insights of Melanie Perkins McLaughlin, Andy's childhood friend and relentless advocate, we explore the dark underbelly of child exploitation and systemic abuse. This episode peels back the layers of a time when trusted figures betrayed the innocence of children, and society was largely silent in the face of such horrors. Melanie's personal connection to Andy and her tireless quest for truth offer a poignant perspective on the lasting impact of these tragedies. We shine a spotlight on the institutional failures that allowed predators to thrive, from clergy abuse to the misuse of CB radios by pedophiles. Crucial legal changes, including the creation of the sex offender registry and Amber Alert System, arose from the heartbreaking cases of missing children like Jacob Wetterling and Andy Puglisi. Yet, these measures are just the beginning, as we emphasize the need for continued advocacy and legislative reforms to protect the most vulnerable among us. The haunting story of Andy's disappearance serves as a powerful reminder of the legacy we must honor and the children we must protect. This episode also delves into the systemic nature of abuse within institutions and the need for reform, focusing on real-life cases and the strength of community support. Through the voices of those affected, we call for justice and change, not only for Andy but for all who missing and murdered children. Send a message to the showSupport the showFollow Instagram | Facebook | BlueSky | TikTok | Threads | YouTube For show notes & source information at CrimeoftheTruestKind.comGive the dogs a bone tip jar: buymeacoffee.com/truestkindBecome a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkindThis podcast has minimal profanity but from time to time you get one or some curse words. DateDecember 15, 2024SynopsisIn this sermon, we unpack the revolutionary nature of joy through the dual lenses of ancient prophecy and creation's wisdom. Moving beyond shallow optimism, we discover joy as a daily practice of drawing from God's deep wells of salvation—a practice that, like the pink candle interrupting Advent's purple hues, breaks through darkness with unexpected light. This exploration reveals how joy becomes both protest and prayer in a world longing for wholeness.ReferencesScripture: Isaiah 12:2–6About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. In episode two of the Courage My Friends podcast, we are joined by anti-poverty activist and former organizer with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, John Clarke and Paul Meinema, national president of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), representing essential workers including "food workers from field to fork." Clarke and Meinema discuss the ways in which this pandemic has forced us to confront what Clarke sees as a "crisis in capitalism" -- its path forged well before the arrival of COVID. John Clarke says "As the pandemic is unleashed in the neoliberal world, the virus literally followed the trail that was laid down for it by the whole neoliberal reordering of the workforce, and the neoliberal reordering of societies…. In a thousand ways, the neoliberal society and the neoliberal city created a route for the pandemic to go down." Decades of mounting inequality has been a defining outcome of neoliberalism. The impacts of this inequality have been disproportionately endured by our most vulnerable -- poor and largely racialized communities and front-line workers who have always been essential, but until COVID largely invisible. As Meinema describes them: "Workers that we've looked past... when you go into a grocery store, or retail store, or often a person who's cleaning your hotel room … They're almost invisible people. But they're the people that we are relying on now, to get us through this." And here we are in what Clarke sees as, "a situation of really unprecedented economic dislocation, unprecedented suffering. And clearly, governments were not prepared for this crisis. And governments have not responded to this crisis in a way that meets people's needs." Are we continuing to meet an unpredictable pandemic with predictable policy responses -- the kind of thinking that paved the way for this crisis in the first place? How can we designate workers as essential and yet treat them as though they are expendable? According to Clarke, "It's sometimes been regarded as hyperbole to say that the corporate profits are worth more than human life. But I think this pandemic and the experience of the pandemic has actually demonstrated that very, very, very starkly. ..here has been a readiness to abandon people, a readiness to, if you'd like, sacrifice people." What is the way forward? Can we move from banging pots to making policies that support our most vulnerable? Can we find an answer in a universal basic income? What is the role of unions? What about our communities? As we move toward a post-pandemic (but still perhaps pre-pandemic) world, is it possible to release ourselves from exploitative economies? Meinema reminds us that, "we cannot let any of these things that have occurred to us slip through our fingers and not remember them." What lessons do we take with us into the future? Can the post-pandemic world also be a post-poverty world? Host and co-producer Resh Budhu begins the conversation with a focus on the most critical issues facing vulnerable communities and front-line workers in this moment of crisis. About today's guests: John Clarke became involved in anti-poverty organizing in the 1980s, when he helped to form a union of unemployed workers in London, Ontario. In 1990, he moved to Toronto to become an organizer with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and stayed in this role until 2019. He is presently Packer Visitor in Social Justice at York University. Paul Meinema is the national president of United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), the country's leading and most progressive private sector union with more than 250,000 members. He is also an executive vice-president of the UFCW International Union and a member of the UFCW International Executive Committee. Paul's service with UFCW spans four decades, beginning in the 1980s when he first volunteered to serve his co-workers as a shop steward while working on the floor at the Fletcher's meat processing plant in Red Deer, Alberta. Paul also serves as Canadian sector representative on the board of directors of the International Foundation of Benefits, and as a trustee of various UFCW Canada benefit and pension plans. Roundup #8 — Tartine Union Members Ask, "Where Is Our Bread and Roses?" [101]

Boss Barista

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2020 31:30

Here's a quick timeline of events for the Tartine Union. On Thursday, February 6, the employees of Tartine presented their managers with a letter of intent to unionize. It was signed by roughly 141 people or about 2/3 of all of their Bay Area-based employees. Essentially, they were asking for a seat at the table—a chance to negotiate their wages, have a say in decision making, and know more about where money was going. Tartine has grown A TON in the last few years, and with so much aggressive growth, it can be hard to understand why your wages haven't gone up, or how shops across the globe keep opening, but your wages stay the same. In response, that following Monday, so that's February 10th, Tartine declined to recognize the union. They call the way the union presented their letter as a "threat," they question the motives of the union, and they cite that there has been "bullying on the internet," tarnishing the reputation of Tartine. We talked to two members of the Tartine Union the day after Tartine released their statement. Now the issue of unionizing goes to a vote—everyone who works at Tartine will vote via secret ballot, and as that happens, Tartine management can do things like hire "union experts," and the workers of Tartine can continue to rally—which has been happening and local politicians have joined their organizing efforts. The reason I lay this all out is because there's a lot happening—and we're in the middle of it. There's a lot of push and pull in terms of who controls the narrative and what's actually happening. And as you listen to the folks I interview—Emily and Mason—I want you to think about the goals of a union, and why the leaders of Tartine might not want a union—and how that dictates their responses and the way they paint the narrative.

On January 11, 1912, a group of Polish women weavers at a textile mill in Lawrence, Mass., found out their already abysmal pay had been cut as the result of a new bill that shortened the workweek from 56 to 54 hours. They shut down their machines, refusing to labor any more without the proper pay, as they were producing more than ever, and faster. What resulted was one of the most monumental strikes in U.S. labor history, and it was led by thousands of immigrant workers who realized their worth and refused to settle for anything less. A group of local storytellers,  Emily Sterling, Kelly Hansen, Kenny Field and Zoe Pilliafas wondered: "Is it possible that when your memory begins to cloud, you hold on more strongly to memories of your truest love? When the distraction of life’s mundane memories disappears are you left with the distillation of your life’s truest love?" These storytellers felt it was time for them to share the stories of the residents of The Emerson House Dementia Care Facility on Division Street. They interviewed and photographed these residents and found that "in memory loss, in aging, in an assisted living facility, there can be beauty, grace, dignity, and great adventure." In February, they displayed these stories and photographs in an exhibit titled, "What is the Love of Your Life?" at Portland Grind. It explored passions outside of an intimate relationship as the secret to a happy life. Tune in to learn all about this project and be challenged to explore, what is the love of your life!!!
