Episode 345 delves into LAFC's first win over NYCFC, 1-0, at BMO Stadium. The contest nearly ended in a scoreless draw, but Ryan Hollingshead's 86th-minute opportunistic strike put the home side on the right side of things. LAFC started in a different formation, 3-4-3, than they had lined up in this season. After a lackluster first 60', Steve pulled the plug and made the moves to get back into a 4-3-3, which really opened things up for the Black and Gold. Still, NYCFC's defense was up to the challenge. All it took, however, was one disastrous touch by defender Birk Risa, pounced on by Ryan Hollingshead, and the damage was done. LAFC wins 1-0. Also on this episode, Apple needs to learn how to spell, Olivier makes an impact again without touching the ball in the box, Artem makes his debut, and Lafferty is in a park. Enjoy 345!

LAFC's 2024 season ends in heartbreak with a 2-1 extra-time loss to the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Semifinals at BMO Stadium. Despite dominating with 28 shots to 13, LAFC couldn't secure the win. Ryan Hollingshead scored the opener, but an own goal by Maxime Chanot and Jordan Morris' extra-time strike sealed LAFC's fate. In this episode of VOBG, we break down: The missed opportunities and key moments of the match. Steve Cherundolo's tenure: Is he the right coach to lead LAFC forward? What's next for the team in 2025? It's Episode 336, and, yes, for the 11th time in two seasons, it's about Vancouver. This one, however, stung, as LAFC put up their worst performance on the road in quite some time in a 3-0 loss to Vancouver in the second match of the best-of-three First Round Playoff affair. In a goal eerily resembling the stoppage-timer from last match, Ryan Gauld got the home side off to a dream start just 10 minutes in. Three minutes later, the Ryan-to-Ryan connection was made for the first time this season, as Ryn Gauld found a streaking... Ryan Hollingshead... with a deft cross, and the home side was up 2-0. Though LAFC put up a solid effort for the first 20 minutes of the second half, the nail was provided by one of our own, as Eddie Segura put away another beautiful ball by Ryan Gauld to make it 3-0. Yikes. Also on this episode... not much else. Yes, we talk about the first IG post in LAFC history, and Mario expecting a baby boy, but at the end of the day... it's the Whitecaps. Again. But don't worry, the boys will be ready to do it one more time in 2024, as LAFC takes on Vancouver on Friday to settle the series, with the season on the line. Enjoy!
Who could provide you with a little bit of light-hearted entertainment after LAFC's 0-0 draw in Houston? Filly and Scarf, that's who! Join the boys on Episode 325, discussing much more than the scoreless 90 minutes in Texas.Hugo Lloris keeps another clean sheet, his 10th of the season, without too many difficult moments. Ryan Hollingshead should have had a record-scoring goal, but Olivier Giroud was just offside. Griffin Dorsey, Filly's IU mate, was excellent, as was Sergi Palencia for LAFC, and, in limited minutes, Nathan Ordaz put in an excellent shift. There you have it, the anatomy of a 0-0 draw. Also on this episode, LAFC's history repeats itself with a draw, on the road, missing a ton of guys, there's new International Mail on Twitter, and we remember James Earl Jones and Ed Kranepool. It's a tight, crisp, 50-minute episode that we really hope you enjoy!
In this episode of VOBG, we break down LAFC's hard-fought 0-0 draw on the road against the Houston Dynamo. Despite missing seven first-team regulars, including top scorers Mateusz Bogusz, Denis Bouanga, David Martínez, and Cristian Olivera, LAFC managed to secure a crucial point and move within four points of first place in the Western Conference. We discuss Hugo Lloris' 10th shutout of the season, making him the first goalkeeper in MLS to hit double digits in 2024. We'll also analyze Ryan Hollingshead's disallowed goal, the chemistry between Olivier Giroud and the team, and the importance of squad depth as LAFC enters the final stretch of the season. Join us for all this and more as we talk tactics, standout performances, and what's next for LAFC. Don't miss out!
Episode 324 is (finally) here. LAFC got back to their MLS schedule but left their offense somewhere along the way as the Houston Dynamo came into BMO and knocked off our boys, 2-0. LAFC got off to a slow start, made even worse by Ezequiel Ponce's header to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead into the half. Steve would switch to a 4-3-3 in the second half, but it would do little to stem the tide. Lawrence Ennali did his best Sonic the Hedgehog impersonation as he flew by Ryan Hollingshead and Eddie Segura, made one touch to round Hugo Lloris, and softly tapped in his first MLS goal to double the lead. That would be all Houston would need, and, unfortunately, all Ennali would contribute, as he tore his ACL later in the match. Also on this episode, the LAFC Unified Team takes the pitch at BMO for the first time, Kike talks about next year, and Filly and Scarf figure out who the heck starts and could make the 20 for our next match in Houston. Enjoy Episode 324!
In this episode of VOBG, we celebrate LAFC's historic achievement as they advance to the Leagues Cup Semifinals for the first time in club history with a dominant 3-0 win over the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field. Join us, as we break down the key moments from the match, including goals from Ryan Hollingshead, Kei Kamara, and Denis Bouanga, who has now become the all-time leading scorer in Leagues Cup history. We also spotlight the incredible performances of Bouanga and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who not only kept a clean sheet but also assisted on Bouanga's goal. With LAFC set to face the Colorado Rapids in the Semifinals at BMO Stadium, we discuss what it will take for the Black and Gold to keep their momentum going and reach the Leagues Cup Final. Plus, we look at LAFC's stellar 2024 season under head coach Steve Cherundolo and what this continued success means for the rest of the year. Don't miss out on this deep dive into one of LAFC's most exciting runs to date! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more LAFC content!
Here on Episode 320, LAFC heads up to Seattle to do exactly what we did three-plus weeks ago, beat the Sounders, 3-0. This time, a berth in the semis of the 2024 Leagues Cup is on the line. LAFC would start out hot, as Ryan Hollingshead got behind the defense and slotted home a 13' goal to get the Black and Gold rolling. A dozen minutes later, Kei Kamara turned back the hands of time yet again, this time with a beautiful right-footed, leaping volley that sent the bouncing shot over the outstretched arms of Stefan Frei and into the back of the net for a two-goal lead.Just 8 minutes after the halftime whistle, Denis Bouanga, who had missed a similar opportunity earlier in the match, got the long pass from his good buddy Hugo Lloris, and the lead was three. Hugo went nearly 14 years between career assists one and two, but barely 14 days between two and three! Also on this episode, Lewis O'Brien makes his debut, FC Cincinnati may be to blame for Kike Olivera not playing, and Filly is still in Europe. Enjoy Episode 320!
The boys are back in town with a funky edition of Inside LAFC! In the second half of the show, Ryan Hollingshead joins to talk about where the team is at heading into two crucial Western Conference match-ups, and then for dessert, offers a behind-the-scenes account of the players' photoshoot for the new Archive Collection.

It's Episode 286, and on this episode, LAFC finally brings home a trophy! It's not quite the one we were hoping for, but don't worry! We play for that in just 7 days! LAFC is on to the MLS Cup Final after defeating Houston in the Western Conference Final, 2-0!A near miss by Carlos Vela and a stunning cross from Hector Herrera punctuated a very entertaining first 10 minutes or so, but then LAFC's defense went to work, stifling Houston for the remainder of the first half. Just before the halftime whistle, a perfect Carlos Vela corner finds the head of Giorgio Chiellini. His initial effort was saved, but playoff goal scorer turned hero Ryan Hollingshead was there to put it away to give LAFC the lead just before halftime. In the second half, Houston certainly had a lot of the ball, but nothing to show for it. LAFC's defense put up yet another goose egg, but not without the help of Ilie Sanchez taking a ball off our own goal line. A late own goal provided the margin as LAFC clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Final! It's on to Columbus!

As LAFC embarks on its title defense, it's a familiar foe, as Vancouver returns to BMO for the first match in a ridiculous best-of-three First Round series. It's playoff time, Defenders, and this is Episode 283 of Defenders of the Banc!LAFC started out hot, as Ryan Hollingshead cleaned up the mess after a beautiful set piece to give LAFC the lead 18 minutes in. Vancouver would answer after an awful turnover by Murillo, as Andres Cubas, back from injury, finds Brian White for the equalizer. Just two minutes later, the Golden Boot winner of 2023, Denis Bouanga, takes a long pass down the line from Giorgio, shifts to his right, and slams home his first of the match to give the lead back to the good guys. But as Lee Corso says... "Not so fast!" Vancouver comes back yet again, this time with set-piece success. Ryan Gauld finds Sam Adekugbe, and his header levels it at 2 just before halftime. After the half, THIS was the LAFC club we had been waiting to see all match. Defensively sound, allowing zero shots on target in the second half, LAFC was free to let their offensive freak flag fly. Ryan cleans up more set-piece debris for a goal, Denis hammers one home off a Carlos Vela free kick, and Air Murillo takes off in the box for a fifth! LAFC dominates the second half en route to an easy 5-2 win! Also on this episode, it's Shaft Brewer's birthday, Filly rants twice, and Scarf makes an outlandish pick for Eastern Conference champion! What did Filly rant about? Who did Scarf pick? You'll have to listen to Episode 283 to find out!

Decision Day! One of the most fun days on the MLS calendar is here, and LAFC can finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th depending on their result. As Filly and Scarf have their eye on games featuring Houston, Seattle, and of course Carson, Denis Bouanga has his sights set on LAFC's third Golden Boot in 5 years. LAFC started out strong, peppering Takaoka with a few shots and creating solid chances. However, after Ryan Hollingshead goes to ground early on Richie Laryea, Vancouver earns a PK. Ryan Gauld came into the match 6-for-6. He left the first half 6-for-7, as Maxime Crepeau makes a massive save to keep it scoreless. In the 34', it was inevitable. Denis Bouanga, from distance, off a great steal and pass from Ilie, makes it 20 on the year and all but wraps up the Golden Boot. LAFC leads 1-0. It would remain 1-0 until the 58', as Ali Ahmed takes a pass from thorn-in-our-side Richie Laryea and ties it. Despite a second PK for Gauld (this one hit the crossbar) and a point-blank chance for Mario Gonzalez, this one would end scoreless. LAFC now heads to the First Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, where they will play a best-of-three series against... these very same Vancouver Whitecaps. Also on 282, the boys welcome LAFC's newest owner, Shaun Neff, Filly makes up words and sings to new songs, and Scarf gets to have a mini 110 reunion with Vince La Rosa. Get ready for a LOT of Vancouver talk over the next few weeks, and enjoy Episode 282!
The LA Derby never disappoints. Sure, the result might not always fall in our favor, but the excitement, the buildup, the anticipation, and the energy of the matchup with Carson is usually exceeded only by the football played on the pitch. It's very safe to say that, for Episode 275, this version of the derby definitely didn't disappoint. LAFC took the lead twice, first on a Bouanga banger from Chiqui, and then after Ryan Hollingshead poached a pass for Denis and turned it into a goal of his own. But just as many times as we took the lead, Carson would score soon after to bring it level. But just when we thought the match couldn't get any more intense, LAFC goes and totally redeems themselves. A Bouanga brace followed by Tillman's first in forever gave the home side a lead, a win, and all three points. Also on this episode, Olly meets a Heisman winner, Filly leaves the show for a few minutes, and Scarf is still waiting for his paper airplane show. Enjoy Episode 275 as we begin out final gauntlet of matches before MLS Cup Playoffs.
Inside LAFC Podcast Ep. 87 - Dual Threat Defender Ryan Hollingshead by LAFC
It wasn't supposed to go like this. A loss to Charlotte on the heels of Messi coming to town? Messi Magic overwhelming LAFC at home? Portland punishing LAFC at Providence Park? No, no, and NO. Here on Episode 274, we try to figure out what's rotten in the state of the Black and Gold as LAFC falls in Portland, 2-0. Yes, LAFC came into the match without five players due to international duty, including talisman Denis Bouanga and the sizzling Cristian Olivera. And yes, LAFC was down their most important player (according to Scarf) Giorgio Chiellini, and his backline mate, Ryan Hollingshead, both due to injury. But surely the remainder of players in Black and Gold, or in this case, Smokescreen Green, would be enough to handle a Portland side well under the playoff line. Right? No. Not even close.Goals from defenders Larrys Mabiala and Claudio Bravo on either side of halftime punctuated a spirited and collective effort from Portland as LAFC failed to record a shot on target for the first hour. Mateusz Bogusz did all he could to keep us afloat, but there wasn't nearly enough offensively time and time again. LAFC are now mired in a three-match losing streak as Carson heads to BMO. Also on this episode, please note: THIS ONE IS A SOLO SCARF ENDEAVOR! Filly is getting ready to call matches in Ontario, so it's just a man who likes to be alone with his thoughts. So much so that Scarf FORGOT the intro and outro! Oops. Also on this episode, Scarf poses the question: Have you ever seen Evander and The Weeknd in the same room at the same time? Are they not doppelgangers? Enjoy this one before the semi-milestone effort of 275 episodes!

The stage was set for a good ol'-fashioned Hollywood showdown: Messi, Busquets, Alba, and Martino against Vela, Bouanga, and the chorus of the Black and Gold Faithful. Which set of star power would show up on Apple TV's biggest night since Messi's debut? It wasn't LAFC. Jordi Alba opened his Inter Miami account, Lionel Messi dished out two assists, and his bodyguard made perhaps the biggest save of the night. A goal by Ryan Hollingshead was simply far too little, far too late. Also on this episode, we spotlight all involved with the Kick Childhood Cancer campaign. Which iconic fast food spot does Scarf think of as just meh? Why is Filly so salty? And when can we have that national anthem singer back again? See you soon for Episode 274!

Finally... MLS has come back... to BMO Stadium! It had been quite a while since LAFC had played an MLS regular season match at BMO, and boy did it feel good to be back! Olly's flying, Carlos is scoring, smoke is popping in the North End... the good times are back! LAFC hammers Colorado 4-0. Though it may have been a somber day in LA as we remember Kobe Bryant on his birthday, LAFC did all they could to raise the spirits of Angelinos with their performance. It was a barrage early, as Matty Bogusz, Carlos Vela, and Ryan Hollingshead gave the home side plenty to cheer about in the first half. After halftime, Colorado came out swinging, just not scoring. Despite dominating the first 12-15 minutes of the second half, they couldn't pull one back. Cristian Olivera subbed on in the 64th minute, and, wow, what a debut. Quickly establishing himself as a threat, he put one away in the 83', the Scarf Minute, to salt away the comfortable 4-0 result. It's the 8th clean sheet for J-Mac. Also on this episode, Filly apologizes for a fight song, Scarf rants about undercutting, and the boys can't wait for their date with Olly on the 31st! Who did Scarf use to trick or treat with? How did Filly stump the Scarf? And how were the burgers, tacos, and pizza? Find out the answers to all these and more on Episode 271!
This match and postgame livestream were so eventful we never got a chance to mention that Travis' Bet It And Forget It bet CASHED in this BONKERS 7-1 PILEDRIVER over FC Juárez! A pigeon now-famously sat in LAFC's attacking third for the first 15 minutes of this match, daring LAFC to bring the pain, and they certainly delivered. It's a milestone episode here at Defenders, as Filly, Scarf, and the MILLIONS celebrate making it one-quarter of the way to 1000 episodes! So why aren't the boys more jovial for Episode 250? When you play one of the worst clubs in all the league to a draw, at home, after you had the lead... You'll have to excuse us for not breaking out the party hats. All the scoring was done in the first 20 minutes, as Denis Bouanga hits double digits just mere moments before Johnny Russell pulls one right back. From there on out, the game vacillated between boring, frustrating, and the occasional exciting moment for the Black and Gold. LAFC had a late goal by Ryan Hollingshead called back on a questionable offside while Eldin Jakupovic saves our bacon in stoppage time. All in all, a frustrating draw, 1-1, but... still not a loss. Also on this episode, we take a moment to honor and thank Brandon Tsay, Nathan Ordaz makes his MLS debut, and the Defenders take a quick look back on the over 260 hours of content they've created thus far. Enjoy 250, because 251 is coming right around the corner!

The Clasico Angelino, Round 18, and for the first time, LAFC defeats Carson at the DIGS. It may have taken too long, but finally, LAFC gets the monkey off their backs and takes three points from Carson, needing a brace and an assist from Carlos Vela to do it!Despite the lack of home support from Carson, LAFC took the Galaxy's best shot. Going into the half level, 1-1, the Black and Gold responded well with two goals in 4 minutes. A Vela PK, earned by Cifu, and then a birthday goal for Ryan Hollingshead put LAFC in the catbird seat, 3-1. A late rally by Carson made it 3-2, but after thwarting several corners and enduring almost 9 minutes of stoppage, the whistle finally blew, both on the match and on the Galaxy's stranglehold of Carson. For the first time, LAFC Annexes Carson! Also on the episode, we take a moment to remember Tommy Mark, to highlight a solid comeback from ACFC, and to check on our boys in LAFC2. Didn't we just do this? (Yes!) And aren't we doing this again very soon? (Also yes!) It's a gauntlet of 5 matches in 15 days, and LAFC's beatdown of the Revolution means we are over the hump! It's Episode 235, the one where we welcome back club legend Latif Blessing!LAFC, fresh off their international spanking of Costa Rica's Alajuelense, head back to BMO for our third-ever showdown against Bruce Arena and the NE Revolution. Spoiler alert: It did not go well for Bruce's Boys. An early PK converted by Denis Bouanga (one of two for him), and goals by Timothy Tillman and Stipe Biuk capped off the 4-0 win for the Black and Gold. News wasn't all good, however, as Ryan Hollingshead left the match with a potentially serious upper-body injury in the 83'. We will wait and see what his status is for the coming weeks. We will cover both legs of the first round CCL tilt with Alajuelense on the next episode, but, for now, a very tired duo of Filly and Scarf breaking down New England will have to do! Enjoy the episode!
Defenders! The boys are indeed back in town! LAFC has returned to the Performance Center, and Filly and Scarf are BACK in World Famous Filimonster Studios! On this episode, we chat about all the transactions in the 2023 off-season so far. Latif is gone, and Scarf is crushed. We remember Pelé, we celebrate Messi, and we look at all things LAFC in Qatar. LAFC has knocked Carson out of the playoffs (again) behind a spectacular performance by #99 (again), and you can hear all about it here on Episode 221! Though we still have two more wins to go, tonight we celebrate LAFC's 3-2 triumph over the Galaxy!Somehow, after 17 matches in the Clasico Angelino, this rivalry still gives us magic every. single. time! LAFC went up early, something we thought we must do in order to win, behind a beautiful ball from Carlos Vela and an even better box out by Denis Bouanga to create enough space to finish. Right before the half, Samuel Grandsir draws the visitors back level with a strike from relative distance off a bad clearance. Both sides escape to the locker rooms level at 1. And the fireworks had just begun! With Captain Carlos coming off after about 75 minutes for Mahala, nervous time had clearly started. But this season's Ghanian game changer made a beautiful run into the box as Ryan Hollingshead's cross came through. Upon getting a small touch on it, the ball found Denis on the back post, and just like that, it's a brace for Bouanga! All LAFC had to do was hold on. Oops.Super sub Dejan Joveljic's rocket in the 84' drew us back level, but the man who has been our most consistent scorer for the last two seasons, Chicho Arango, would pull a rabbit out of a hat in stoppage! After a perfect Kellyn corner, the ball pinballed to Chicho's feet, and he simply doesn't miss from there! The Banc erupts, LAFC wins, 3-2, and we are back in the Western Conference Final! Also on this episode, Filly gets the hiccups while his cats run amok, Scarf looks after a player's child (?), and we send some lovely parting shots Raheem Edwards' way. Until 222, enjoy 221!
LAFC win the west... finally. What seemed to be a foregone conclusion weeks ago finally turns into reality this past week. Jeremy, Scott and Brett go over the last two matches for both LAFC and ACFC. Also, is Ryan Hollingshead a best XI candidate? And what are the chance ACFC make the playoffs in their inaugural season?
Revenge is a dish best served at the Banc, and LAFC was able to enact some on Houston with a 3-1 beating behind a pair of PK's from the Captain. The three points were huge, as LAFC now wrestles back control of their Supporters Shield destiny from Philadelphia. A Corey Baird 25th minute goal was sandwiched between two Carlos Vela penalty kick finishes, and LAFC headed to the half up 2-1. Our secret weapon, Ryan Hollingshead, added to his defender-leading goal tally just after halftime, and that was all LAFC would need. 3-1 to the good guys! Also on Episode 217, a glass of Scotch accompanies a rant or two by Filly, Scarf sells a bunch of LAFC cards, and the Black and Gold are, again, Champions League bound! We'll take a short international break along with MLS, and you should do the same until 218!
LAFC heads to Texas for the final time in 2022, and all we can say here on Episode 215 is good riddance! Ryan Hollingshead sees red during the match while LAFC and their supporters are left seeing red after. LAFC loses a tough one the hard way, 2-1, behind a brace from Jesus Ferreira and an awful day for Jon Freemon. Just eight minutes in, LAFC would already be dealt a body blow, as Chiqui was shown a very questionable yellow, meaning he will miss our next match, a tilt in just three days against Minnesota. Compounding LAFC's issues, just 5 minutes later Ryan Hollingshead would be booked a straight red after VAR allowed Jon Freemon, head referee, to amend his previous bad call of a yellow to an even worse one. LAFC would play down a man for the remainder of the match. Right before the halftime whistle, Maxime Crepeau would make a Save of the Week candidate on Edwin Cerrillo, and just seconds before the whistle, Giorgio Chiellini would find Chicho over the top, and Arango chips the keeper to improbably put LAFC up 1-0 heading into the locker room. LAFC dodged a bullet early in the second half and looked to hold on, which they did for 77 full minutes. In the 78', after a lack of focus on a quick restart, Paul Arriola finds Jesus Ferreira to equalize. Just three minutes later, Ferreira would bury a free kick, and just like that, all of LAFC's incredible defensive efforts down a man went for naught. Ugh. Another frustrating LAFC loss, and this one may have topped them all. Also on this episode, we are just plain upset. Filly gets bleeped, Scarf gets a stadium PA job, and the boys chat about diapers, but not in a gross way. This one was a rough pill to swallow, but enjoy Episode 215.
LAFC gets back to the Banc, and back to their winning ways to begin Kick Childhood Cancer Month. Maxime Crepeau blanks RSL, 2-0, and helps LAFC to 60 points on the season while wrestling back control in the race for the Shield.Ryan Hollingshead rips a banger just after halftime, Captain Carlos finds Chicho in the 68th minute, and Maxime Crepeau does all the heavy lifting with 5 big saves as LAFC ends their 3-game losing streak. Bouanga gets a surprise start while Chiellini is great again. Also on this episode, the boys are up really late, again. Oy. It's Episode 214, complete with improvised singing, Filly possibly making up words, and Scarf being asked to take his top off. Don't worry, it stayed on. Enjoy Episode 2014!
Short turnaround this week, as LAFC hits the road once again. And it's back to Texas. Max and Vince start the pod with a breakdown of the 4-1 loss to Austin FC. Is there reason for concern after the defeat or was this a one-off? Max and Vince have thoughts before previewing the match in Houston. After that, Ryan Hollingshead joins the show for his second appearance of the season. The guys ask his thoughts on the Austin loss and what he and his teammates have been talking about this week. The guys also ask Ryan about the influx of new players in the team and how that shapes the competition on the training field and if the locker room is still intact. Don't forget to subscribe, rate, review, and tell a friend!
Episode 210 is upon us, and before we talk about the match against the Quakes, we have an announcement! Defenders of the Banc is proud to announce the podcast's first official sponsor: FLEX Power Tools. Yes, FLEX, the very same front-of-kit sponsor of our beloved Black and Gold! A huge thank you to everyone in the FLEX family: Joe, Katie, Brady, Vince, Taylor, Shane, and everyone involved in making this dream a reality.Meanwhile in San Jose, the Black and Gold take an… interesting lineup into PayPal Park to take on the Quakes. While Max and the back line were relatively normal, the midfield trio of Mendez-Acosta-Blessing and seeing Ryan Hollingshead's name next to Chicho and Mahala on the front line left both Filly and Scarf saying “Wait… what?!” (It's back!)LAFC would go down early on a Benji Kikanovic goal, set up by the theme for the match, an attack from the right by San Jose. After a couple of near misses by Jeremy Ebobisse and Chicho Arango, we head to half down, but not out, 1-0. Surprisingly, no halftime changes were made, but that wouldn't stop LAFC from leveling the match. After some much-needed heroics by Crepeau, it was time for more Mahala magic! A cheeky chip of Marcinkowski in the 54' was all LAFC needed to grab a point back on the road. Or at least we thought. After subbing in Carlos Vela, Jose Cifuentes, Ilie Sanchez, and Gareth Bale, the momentum immediately swung our way, but double yellows on Ilie and Kellyn, coupled with the wunderkind, Cade Cowell, entering the match, spelled trouble for the Black and Gold. In the 77', Cade Cowell fired a one-timer with authority to put the home side on top for good and send PayPal Park into a frenzy. San Jose had just won their MLS Cup. Ilie Sanchez all but sealed the victory for SJ, picking up his second yellow in just 15 minutes, assuring he will miss the match in Austin, but a game LAFC squad wouldn't relent. The front line of Bale, Chicho, and Vela were clicking as LAFC had a few chances to pull one back, but it was too little, too late, and just like that, the win streak was over. This episode definitely meanders through the first few bits! Will Cifu, Mamadou Fall, and/or Brian Rodriguez be on their way out? Are more players coming in? Why is Filly calling out Tony Robbins (again)? Did we really just talk about the return of Shaft Brewer, Jr. to American soccer? And did the boys really get to bring back “Name That Perez”?! What an episode!
Today I bring you the conversation I had with Ryan Hollingshead. Ryan is a veteran in the MLS playing in his 9th season. He grew up in and around Los Angeles and went on to Star at UCLA where we eared All-American honors in 2012 and won Pac-12 Player of the year. Over his MLS career he established himself as a player who could play multiple positions, mostly as a fullback or wing on either side. We talk through his childhood competing with his brothers, the unique decision to take a year off after getting drafted in the MLS, a scary moment in 2017 where he got hit by a car when helping at another wreck, his return to LA with LA FC and much more! LAFC takes the show on the road as the Black and Gold take on Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto. Filly and Scarf cover everything that went down in Salt Lake and so much more here on Episode 207!As LAFC heads to the All-Star break, there was one more foe to vanquish before a little break, the cobalt-and-claret clad club from Salt Lake. On paper, it was a bit of a mismatch: No Damir Kreilach, no Bobby Wood, and no recently-acquired Danny Musovski, all out with injury. Recent acquisitions Bryan Oviedo and Braian Ojeda have not yet joined the squad, and the club just jettisoned David Ochoa to the nation's capital. Meanwhile, Gareth Bale, Brian Rodriguez, Latif Blessing, Mamadou Fall, Ryan Hollingshead, and the two Sebastians, Mendez and Ibeagha, we all NOT starting for an uber-talented LAFC squad that is still waiting on the arrival of their newest shiny toy, designated player Denis Bouanga. Would the matchup play out as lopsided as it looked on paper? Yes.LAFC wasted no time getting on the scoresheet as Chicho Arango puts away a Vela free kick with a stunning back-heel goal. RSL equalized just three minutes later off a goal from Cordova, but LAFC got right back out in front when Kellyn Acosta connected on a banger from outside the box. The effort by Mahala to keep that play alive allowed LAFC to enter the half on top.RSL started out the second half on the front foot, pushing LAFC's backline and controlling much of the possession. Not much got through, but RSL definitely pushed the pace out of the locker room. After a near miss in the 50', when Ilie had to clear one off the back line, LAFC grabbed control of the game because of another great play by Mahala. After beating his man 1v1, a perfect pass across the mouth of the goal found an open Chicho for a 3-1 lead, giving Arango 11 on the season. Just when you thought you had seen everything, Italian superstar Giorgio Chiellini tried his hand(s) at volleyball in the 69th minute, earning himself a yellow card and a chat with the AVP. Just when you thought it was safe to grab a snack or a drink, Gareth Bale provides another moment of brilliance, running around 2 defenders on his way into the box and drilling one past Zac MacMath for the fourth goal of the match. The team really was the star; it was the team in Black and Gold. LAFC remain on their pace to break more records and win their first cup. Also on this episode, Scarf has a crazy idea: replace the three LAFC All-Stars with three different LAFC players! Filly has a little trouble with Franco Escobar's first name while the boys both chat about the other leagues beginning their seasons. It's a fun one here on 207!
It would be one thing to play 8 matches in 28 days. That, in itself, is tough. But LAFC made it much, much tougher. Injuries. Yellow card suspensions. New signings and rumors of more on the way. Good form and bad form mixed almost equally. And one soul-crushing loss. Put it all together, and what a year these last 28 days have been. LAFC closes out the run with a match against a familiar and beatable foe, the San Jose Earthquakes.Like the entire month, LAFC couldn't make it easy. But they did at least get off to a hot start! An 8th minute PK from Chicho (earned by Ryan Hollingshead) and a beautiful assist by Brian Rodriguez for a second goal (scored by Ryan Hollingshead) had LAFC off and running just 13 minutes in. However, “thorn” in LAFC's side, Jeremy Ebobisse, made it all about him for the remainder of the half. Several near misses spaced between goals in the 16th and 31st minute saw both clubs heading to the locker room knotted at two after one half of play. Thankfully, LAFC has one healthy DP, and today, he played like it. Brian Rodriguez nets his second of the season just two minutes into the second half, and a much-improved defensive effort salts away the 3-2 win for LAFC. 3 goals. 3 points. 3 weeks without a match for the Black and Gold, as MLS takes their international break. LAFC heads into the break at the top of the table, best in the West and best in MLS. Also on this episode, we are joined in studio by @lafcluke, Luke Klipp of Pride Republic. We get to know Luke as he talks all things Pride, including some great ways to celebrate Pride Month (June) with all your LAFC friends. He even helps us break down the match! We hope you enjoy episode 197, and we are really looking forward to the next verses of Brian's Song, coming in Episode 198!
The night started with such promise. So many possibilities danced in the air: The ability to move to the final 8 of the U.S. Open Cup. The potential of playing a USL team in that round. The chance to dispatch our rival in another elimination match. And, most importantly, a second chance, a second bite at the cherry, as Max Bretos would say, to shake King Kong off our backs and finally, finally beat Carson in Carson. Nope. Nope to all of it. From the first whistle, LAFC played second fiddle to the Galaxy. They were more physical. They were more clinical. They were more desperate to earn a result. And they were just better, up and down the pitch, than the Black and Gold were for all 100 minutes of this Open Cup tilt. LAFC would go down 3-0, all scored in the second half, before we would muster a response with 5 minutes to play. A Ryan Hollingshead header would be a small band-aid on a gaping wound, and LAFC was bounced from the Open Cup, 3-1. What's worse is that Carlos Vela came off with a quad injury and Chiqui Palacios, our most impactful player in 2022, had to be helped straight to the locker room after a scary foul by Chicharito saw him land on his head and neck during an aerial challenge. We hope Diego is OK.Also on this episode, Scarf makes an obscure WWF reference, Filly breaks out his thesaurus, and the boys discuss the potential of life without Carlos. This is a tough one, Defenders, but, as always, we are here to go through it with you!
It's a new week. But the table remains the same in MLS. Thanks to a 2-0 victory at the Banc on Sunday night, LAFC sits atop the Western Conference with 22 points. Max and Vince take us through the win against Minnesota United. LAFC added to its league-leading tally of goals from substitutes as Ryan Hollingshead and Jose Cifuentes found the back of the net off the bench. The guys break down Minnesota's low block and conservative approach to the match. Will we see more teams try the same when they visit LA? After that, we look ahead to the Best in the West vs Best in the East clash between LAFC and the Philadelphia Union this Saturday. Vince gives a scouting report of what to expect from the Union and Max is back on the call with Jordan Harvey on KCOP13. Then, it's time to let our guest loose. Danny Musovski sits down with the guys to talk about getting love from the fans, what it takes to be a finisher, his relationship with Chicho Arango, and more.
The win streak continues for LAFC as they defeated the Loons of Minnesota United FC last night at Banc of California Stadium, 2-0. Goal contributions from Ryan Hollingshead and Jose Cifuentes keep LAFC on top of the West and the rest of the League. Jerry and Jonathan breaks the game down for you and gives an outlook to how the rest of the month could play out for the Black and Gold. Week 9 of the MLS season is upon us, and a familiar face pays a visit to the Banc. Tyler Miller, no longer the starter, and his Minnesota United FC join us for Sunday services at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold. As the Loons would soon find out, good things come to those who sub in late! LAFC win an exciting affair, 2-0, behind two more goals from substitutes and staunch back line play. Looking to continue the weekend-long party that ACFC kicked off on Friday, LAFC forced several tough saves from the former Forward Madison 'Mingo, Dayne St. Clair in the first half, but the best chance of the first 45' came from Finnish forward Robin Lod. Crepeau made his only save of the half (and the match), and we head to the locker 0-0. Just past the hour mark, Dolo called on his bench to provide the heroics, as he inserted Moose and Cifu into the drama for Latif and Mahala. Ten minutes later, Ryan Hollingshead came on, and the chess match was almost complete. In the 82nd minute, Hollingshead gets on the end of a cross and a deflection for his third of the season to put LAFC up one. In the 90th, Cifu clips the Loons' wings, as Chiqui receives an unreal pass from Pancho before finding his fellow countryman to put LAFC up, up, and away, 2-0. Also on this episode, Filly has the hiccups. And heartburn. And a little indigestion. But really, you could barely tell. The boys cross off a huge bucket list item as well as another 14+ hour day at the Banc, LAFC kicks off AAPI Heritage Month, and Kevin Baxter remains silent. We're just 10 episodes away from our second century, and we couldn't have gotten this close without all the support from the millions who are a part of Defenders Nation! Thank you, and see you in just a week or so for Episode 191!
Matchday number 4 in the 2022 MLS season is here, and it's more of the same from Steve Cherundolo, Carlos Vela, and the best team in Major League Soccer, LAFC. It's Episode 184, it's Scarf's birthday, and it's time to take another moment to appreciate Mo. Though Filly and Scarf took a bit to get their schedules on the same page, and to both be in the same country, it's all worth the wait as the boys discuss the 3-1 win over Vancouver leading into the international break. All Scarf wanted for his birthday was three points, but Tristan Blackmon, the former LAFC defender, didn't get the memo. A 12th-minute goal put the visitors up a goal, definitely not the start that the Black and Gold wanted. It would take 15 minutes for LAFC to find the leveler, as Carlos Vela's corner finds the grounded Ryan Hollingshead for a beautiful header. 11 minutes later, Mahala weaves through three defenders, passes it by a fourth to a streaking Carlos Vela, and, after his second bite at the cherry, uses the Left Foot of God to give LAFC a lead they would not relinquish. After several great second-half chances to extend the lead, Ryan Hollingshead gets that pesky first-brace-of-his-career out of the way after 197 MLS matches to put LAFC up 3-1, and that would be that. LAFC stay at the top of the table with 10 points through four matches as the defense has another solid performance. Dolo Ball is working! Also on this episode, Angel City FC takes flight, Danny Trejo makes history in Vegas, three of LAFC's best and brightest get called into camps for El Tri, MAK gets disqualified for El Maple Tree, and the push to build a futsal court in Mo's honor begins. We're sorry for the delay, but we really hope you enjoy Episode 184 of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth!”
LAFC put on a show beating Vancouver 3-1 at home. Ryan Hollingshead scored two goals from set piece. Carlos Vela scored a goal and assist. Mahala continues to shine and proves why he deserves to be in the starting 11.

Season 5 is almost upon us, and we here at Defenders Nation, preachers of the Black and Gold gospel, absolutely cannot wait! With our new vestments freshly unpacked, the "5 Years Strong" kit, we are indeed feeling stronger than ever. But while the kit may be new, and the coach may be new, and many of the players may be new, the goal remains the same: win the whole damn thing! Here on Episode 180, it's a solo Scarf endeavor, as Filly takes a short break from the pod to continue to kill it over in MASL-land. Not to worry, however, as Scarf takes you through all the happenings in pre-season. Out in Windio, LAFC gains their wings with a 6-1 drubbing of the Red Bulls after a no-show against DC, and the performance by Rayito has Scarf right back on the bandwagon. LAFC wasn't done "tweaking" the roster, or the front office! Marco Antonio Garces comes over from Pachuca in what feels like a huge move for the FO. Ryan Hollingshead and Doneil Henry give the Defenders of the Banc two new defenders to support, and we welcome the Mayor's staff to the sidelines, including one coach who stayed, one who returned, and one who will coach our keepers. We spotlight players of the past, including updates on Eduard Atuesta and Diego Rossi, players of the present, as Eddie Segura and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi recover from injury, and players of the future, as Nathan Ordaz and Marvin Gamez headline the next budding young crop of talent. Wait until you hear about all the LAFC Academy talent and girls from LAFC SoCal Youth called into US national youth camps! What happened during the Academy's Open Cup qualifying run? This is not your distraction. It’s not your escape from real life. For some, this is everyday life. These words adorned the shirts worn on July 8 by nearly 200 black Major League Soccer players, coaches, and staff who gathered for a showing of unity during a summer of historic racial tension in the United States. In the debut episode of The Movement Podcast, host and former MLS player Calen Carr examines how the Black soccer community in MLS embraced the Black Lives Matter movement and formed the Black Players for Change organization. Founded by a collection of prominent players with their own sobering stories of life as Black men in America, the BPC orchestrated a series of demonstrations in July as well as a boycott of nearly all MLS games on one historic night in August, all to raise awareness of racial injustice and police brutality. Carr offers a candid look at life for these Black players across the North American soccer spectrum via months of interviews with MLS players Warren Creaville, Raymon Gaddis, Jeremy Ebobisse and Ike Opara, as well as passionate supporters eager to join the fight for justice. From the Minneapolis corner where George Floyd died, to a protest in Atlanta following the death of Ahmaud Arbery, to the night when MLS play suddenly stopped after the police shooting of Jacob Blake, players and fans share their experiences from an unprecedented and transformative moment for soccer and social change. 0:00 - Formation of the Black Players for Change organization 8:45 - Warren Creavalle recounts one agonizing night in Houston 14:20 - Ike Opara on life in Minnesota after George Floyd’s death 18:05 - Jeremy Ebobisee on systemic racism and the relationship between the black community and the police 25:42 - Atlanta United Supporters refocus their resources on social justice 35:12 - Ray Gaddis reflects on the death of Breonna Taylor and his personal story of protests and pandemic 45:33 – Reggie Cannon and Ryan Hollingshead discuss a fateful night in Frisco and a historic night when sports stopped across the country
Boycott. That’s the word of the moment in the sports world and the United States. The Bucks and NBA started a chain reaction of peaceful protests across courts, fields and stadiums in American sports. MLS players stood up for what they believe in, too, boycotting five of six games on Wednesday night. Andrew, David and Charlie welcome six players – Kei Kamara, Mark-Anthony Kaye, Ryan Hollingshead, Earl Edwards Jr., Jalil Anibaba and Stefan Frei – to tell the story of a historic night from the men who took action then discuss what it means and what’s still to come. 5:20 – INTERVIEW: Kei Kamara, Colorado Rapids 20:37 – INTERVIEW: Mark-Anthony Kaye, LAFC 32:10 – INTERVIEW: Ryan Hollingshead, FC Dallas 49:47 – INTERVIEW: Earl Edwards Jr., D.C. Fans boo players who take a knee before Dallas vs. Nashville in MLS There was a smattering of boos and one fan was removed from the stadium for throwing a water bottle when players from FC Dallas and Nashville SC collectively took a knee during the national anthem before their Major League Soccer game on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.
