What would it feel like for other people to love me if they were to truly see me and truly know me as I am right now?Today we meet Esmé and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. And Martha joins us for the conversation!Esmé has been slinging radical books at Firestorm since 2019. They wear multiple hats including communications, event facilitation, and offsite sales. When she doesn't have her nose in a gay book, Esmé sings in a doom metal band and snuggles with the shop dog, an ancient dachshund named Julius Caesar Salad, as much as caninely possible.Martha Wells has written many novels, including the bestselling and award-winning Murderbot Diaries series, which was adapted into an Apple Original TV series debuting May 16, 2025. She also authored Witch King, City of Bones, The Wizard Hunters, Wheel of the Infinite, and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer, as well as YA fantasy novels, short stories, and nonfiction. In All Systems Red, the first book in The Murderbot Diaries, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests on a distant planet, shadowed by their Company-supplied SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module. Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.Special Limited SeriesThis episode is part of a special limited series of episodes featuring only guests who are owners or staff at LGBTQ bookstores. God has rules and requirements for being blessed. Many people think of what they must do, however God is looking at our character which is based on our soul. If a person allows God's word to change his soul, the blessing will rest on him and that person will prosper.
Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney ... Vial # 7 of The Great Tribulation: Revelation 16 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. 18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of HIS wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers – Psalm 1:1
église AB Lausanne ; KJV Proverbs 29 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. ...

PSALMS CLASS 09/12/22 Why Psalm 1 & 2 Are An Introduction to ALL The Psalms: There are no opening Inscriptions to either them ( 2 of 3 w/o) The MSS ran all Psalms together, no chapter breaks, so considered as ONE chpt. Psalm 2 like Ps. 1 is credited to David & both seem to flow together Acts 4:25 who [a]by the mouth of Your servant David have said: Why did the nations rage & the people plot vain things Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. ( see Ps. 2:7--the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.) BOTH Psalms 1 & 2 contain the general content & tenor of ALL PSALMS Comparisons/Contrasts of PSALM 1 & 2: 1 focused on Individual/Ps. 2 focused on nations BOTH Ps. Contrast wicked vs. Righteous…Ps. 1 Right. Man /wicked man & Ps. 2 Right ntns./wicked ntns. Also in same way Blessing is contrasted to cursing, as individuals/ntns. The right. Man/ntns. do such & become such & such…The wicked man/ntns. Do such & such & become such & such BOTH Psalms show the FAITHFULNESS of God Individually/nationally..Blessing & Judgment are shown to be the clear, direct & OVERIDING Themes BOTH Psalms show the INDISSOLUBLE connection between righteousness & Blessings vs. Wickedness & Cursings BOTH Psalms also show the BLESSING/Non Blessing of a Fulfilled/Unfullfilled Covenant by Yahweh Indiv./ntly. KEYNOTE: The Blessing of Following God & God's Faithfulness Towards UsJ NOTE:The Psalms are an open hearted expression of people attempting to follow God, It takes a Spiritual Revelation to Walk with God! THE successful NATION follows GOD PSALMS 1 Psalm 1 contrasts the END of one who LOVES God's LAW to the END of one who is Ungodly Deut. 11:26-28 26 “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; 28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known. Joshua 1:8 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[a] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. God never did away With the LAW when the New Covenant of GRACE was ushered in through Jesus sacrifice….THE LAW is GOOD & to be followed The PSALMS testify to that…It's just that under the covenant of Grace we appropriate/apply the Law in a NEW WAY!:-) The Psalms are a Yeah & AMEN to The Pentateuch PSALMS 1 1Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the [a]ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he [b]meditates day and night. Vs. 1) BLESSED Is The Man….. STOP RIGHT HERE!!??......And take a ‘SELAH” Moment!!...This is one of those words in the Bible that can never be FULLY Unpacked/understood….& It at times it slaps us upside the Head!!?? BLESSED (eser..Esh…air.. #H835)….blessed, happiness, HOW Happy!!! Or Blessedness of Blessedness, or Oh the Happiness of Happinesses or How completely Happy! …PLURAL in Hebrew is for Emphasis, like our !! ‘ Blessed' is also the 1st word used in the Sermon on the Mount & this word is always related to service to God.. we were created to function best serving God The use of the PLURAL in the Hebrew shows powerfully the MANIFOLD or many, many ways God intends to Bless the Man/woman serving HIM! ( ‘There shall be SHOWERS of Blessing!')…POINT: God never just intends for us to Have ONE Blessing…BUT a Plethora of THEM!!!! This person will have all the BEST of everything…gifts, possessions, desires…They will Experience COMPLETE Happiness, in every regard…Complete & Total satisfaction in ALL WAYS, having all you could ever want or desire…This is the best possible state a person could ever be in!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CULMINATION of course = HEAVEN…no wants, no sadness, no pain, no lacks ..NO dissatisfaction whatsoever!!...a Many faceted Word! HARD for us to get our Minds & Hearts around! (why God made it a Plural word) OH BUT THERE IS MORE!!!>>>>>>>>>>>> Vs. 1) BLESSED Is The Man….. CONTINUED…. BLESSED (eser..Esh…air.. #H835)…FROM a ROOT #H833 asar…ah-share……to go or be straight, walk straight, be well ordered, be consistent..READ from the Hebrew as to be/show one of an exceptional state…”The highest blessings attainable are given to those who walk straight & live a well ordered life” II Peter 1:3,4 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the [a]corruption that is in the world through lust. I Tim. 6:6 But Godliness with CONTENTMENT(sufficiency, satisfaction –(a perfect condition in life) is great gain There is a definite connection between Happiness & Godliness! ALL in this person is working perfectly…no Chaos or disorder all is HARMONY THAT MAN In Hebrew language for emphasis…not just any MAN but The NEW MAN Eph. 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.(Col. 3:10) Eph. 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; God wants to Bless us beyond our wildest dreams or Imaginations!! Eph. 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, BLESSEDNESS ENCOMPASSES All That God GIVES To US as we walk with Him in a straight & ordered Life…ALL That we can ever give to Him is responded to By ALL He Gives to Us in Blessing QUESTION!? J LOL…Who GIVES the MOST!? Our commitment to ABBA is so minimal compared to HIS Commitment to us!! The Blessings He showers upon us are so much greater than anything we could ever get to give to Him!?!? The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is FOUNDATIONAL to a relationship with God & has roots in PSALM 1 It Is a Wonderful Revelation PSALMS starts out with ‘BLESSED' as the FIRST word as every person wants to be BLESSED…we were made that wayJ… The PSALMS show us the path to Blessing!! Who walks not in the counsel of the [a]ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; Verses 1-3 shows us a GROWTH PROCESS 1 What a man/woman of God AVOIDS 2 What a Man/Woman of God DELIGHTS In 3 What a Man/Woman of God BECOMES = A Fruitful Tree A Progression out of Darkness(sin)…………to that of an OVERCOMER Walks…….Stands……Sits Counsel….Way/Path…..Seat Ungodly….Sinners…Scornful WALKS /Walketh NOT:Blessed is the Man/woman who has not been walking & still is NOT walking… Is In the Perfect tense in Hebrew…David is implying BLESSING Comes only after you have begun to walk in a ‘NEW WAY' for a TIME….It grows & flourishes…is proven out through consistency Scripture talks about ‘not walking in' or also‘putting off' sin Lev. 20:23 And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them. Jn. 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 13:13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. II Cr. 5:7 For we walk by FAITH & NOT By sight Eph. 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;….Col. 3:8,9 Col. 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Council Of The Ungodly is The advice of those unrighteous criminal, hostile, those not acknowledging God …ungodly = the loose & the lax, taking the easy or lazy way (like a harlot women)..Not strong, no stability Pharisees & Saducees counciled against Jesus..Mtt.12:14,26:59,14:55,Mk.15:1 Acts 6,7 The council of ungodly leadership led to Stephen's death ROMANS1:18-26 18 For [God does not overlook sin and] the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who in their wickedness suppress and stifle the truth, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them [in their inner consciousness], for God made it evident to them. 20 For ever since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through His workmanship [all His creation, the wonderful things that He has made], so that they [who fail to believe and trust in Him] are without excuse and without defense. 21 For even though [a]they knew God [as the Creator], they did not [b]honor Him as God or give thanks [for His wondrous creation]. On the contrary, they became worthless in their thinking [godless, with pointless reasonings, and silly speculations], and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory and majesty and excellence of the immortal God for [c]an image [worthless idols] in the shape of mortal man and birds and four-footed animals and reptiles24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their own hearts to [sexual] impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them [abandoning them to the degrading power of sin], 25 because [by choice] they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading and vile passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural [a function contrary to nature], Hang up on The Devil! Standing/Stands in The WAY/PATH of Sinners …..A further slide from just listening to sinful advice to beginning to partake of it…then we begin to MISS THE MARK cause Offense, beginning to associate with & practice sin (the worlds ways & habits) First listened…'Hath God said”…then did ‘ate of the fruit' Nor Sits/Sitteth In The Seat of the Scornful(Mocker) …Now living In & Controlled by a life of sin, a Total submission To a Life of Sin…it's become a part of who they are , they now speak evil of the righteous…last & worst state of sin…Total deterioration of a life Open scorn of God , implies a person fighting against God…only place in PSALMS Proverbs 21:24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath I Cr. 15:33 Be not deceived evil COMMUNICATIONS corrupt good Morals. Proverbs 4:23,24 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. 24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. NEW Testament Parallel… James 1:13-15 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. **The UNGODLY are not just rapists, murders, adulterers(the WORST kinds of sinners) …BUT Those Who GIVE NO Thought to GOD or have no Time for Him In their Lives** A Progression from GOD-CENTERED Living To Self-Centered….(Phil. 2) WALKS---Decisions, we make decisions all day long (Is GOD always in the Picture?) STANDS----He does not make waves, complain, murmur, riot ** SINNERS…here means to make a loud noise, tulmult**(I Cr. 10:10 the murmurs were destroyed by the destroyer) SCORNFUL----- one sense of scorn = ‘to throw off'..He does not play the blame game, He takes responsibility for His life NOW THE CONTRAST OF BLESSING IS BROUGHT IN! IN : little word both in vs. 1 & 2 YOU cannot be on the fence ,you are either IN God or Out of God & IN Sin Hebrew language stops & says of the Ungodly progression… NAY Absolutely NOT!! … As Paul said throughout His Epistles God FORBID…But NOW THIS!!.... 2)But His DELIGHT Is In The Law of The Lord & In HIS LAW Does He MEDITATE Day & Night…. DELIGHT…(Hepes) VERB..A Longing, a taking pleasure in a Bending Towards…EXPRESSING that His/Her Whole being is Bent towards something….(GOD)..to firmly adhere to, be wrapped around…ROOT WORD…To attack or catch by pursuit…a tracking down (violent chase…God Chasers)…A COMPLETE obsession with ,desire for, ALL you LIVE For & Every principal you apply in life is to bring you to the possession of your desire LAW … ‘That which points out or instructs, teaches, gives direction' Torah, Pentateuch..Instruction, doctrine When the Heart is drawn to God….so also will the mind be drawn to God Example of men & womenJ Proverbs 23:7 As A Man THINKS In His Heart So Is He What You Love (delight in ) is what you will think about!..whatever your mind runs toward is what will FEED or Delight your Heart…If the Heart loves a certain type of food the mind will produce it Examine your brain, to see what you are like…but let God council you so you are w/o condemnation MEDITATE… (Haga) to moan, growl, utter, muse, mutter, meditate, devise, plot, speak…Roar….Muttering & speaking to oneself over & over again, in a low voice..One Scholar speaks of the picture of a cow ‘Bringing up its cud, to chew on again & again Also murmur …not in anger , but in pleasure, in a low voice (SEE GeniusJ))… ..growling in pleasure over prey …thinking, pondering, considering , MARINATING…rumination ‘to toss up in the air' Just as Lions devour & enjoy their prey we must devour, feed upon & relish God's Word PSALMS are just made for Meditation PSALM 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine (HAGA)a vain thing? Godly Meditation is your Lifeline… James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed Psalm 77:6,11,12 Psalm 143:5..119:15,78,97,99,148…different word for Hebrew(meditate) same meaning Romans 12:1,2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Day & Night…….. Continually, in Blessing or Trial…your mind always goes here, even in doing other things during the day always in the back of your mind Luke 2:36,37 Anna Prophetess , served God With Fasting & prayers Night & Day TO STIMULATE Your Mind with GOD's WORD Brings Life & Refreshing RECAP…. Vs. 1 Blessing is declared for those who determine to walk uprightly Vs.2 We begin to see where the Blessed Persons Thoughts gravitate towards Vs. 3 We are now seeing what The Man/ Woman of God BECOMES Because as you DELIGHT In & MEDITATE on GOD …(actually anything) you become like what you Behold II Cor. 3:18 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate[a] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
PART 4 – Walter Boyd preaches on another major character in the book of Proverbs – the “scornful” man who lacks the fear of God and acts accordingly. Beware the scornful attitude of the scorner. Readings: Prov 1:22, 22:15. (Message preached in Cameron Highlands Conference, Malaysia 2004) Full series: The senseless man and his ignorance (David Gilliland) The slothful man and his indolence (Tom Bentley) The simple man and his innocence (John Grant) The scornful man and his impudence (Walter The post PROVERBS: The Scornful Man and His Insolence (44 min) first appeared on Gospel Hall Audio.
You will never occupy the seat of peace, authority, and blessing you were actually designed for, if you are not first willing to vacate the seat of the scornful.
There appear to be two seats in which the Christian can choose to sit. One of them, like the forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden, promises limitless earthly fulfillment while simultaneously accusing God of being a big bummer for prohibiting access to it. Psalm 1:1 describes this first seat as the “Seat of the Scornful”. But, there is another seat. And this second seat is a heavenly seat. And when we choose it over the first seat, God promises to indubitably supply all the fulfillment that He created us to discover. However, the glory of this second seat is only found when we let go of all the world's promises of fleshly satisfaction derived from sitting in the first seat. And it is over this key decision in each of our lives that the spiritual realms wage their great war. NOTE: We apologize for the sound issues in this episode. We almost didn't post this message due to sizable problems in the first 18 minutes. But, after trimming off the first 18 minutes, we felt like it was clear enough to still work as a solid, edifying message.

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Ljubomir Peklar, the creative director for Scorn, has publicly apologized following a "hostile" update sent out about the game's delay. In an update to Kickstarter backers, the creative director and EbbSoftware CEO apologized to fans and took full responsibility for the update being posted. "I quickly and haphazardly read through the draft of the update and in all my wisdom approved it," said Peklar. In a wide-ranging interview with IGN Unfiltered covering Skyrim's 10th anniversary, Starfield, and The Elder Scrolls 6, Howard talked about the lengthy list of projects that wound up pushing the project back upon the conclusion of Fallout 4 in 2015. Bethesda Game Studios ultimately decided to push forward with Starfield, effectively putting The Elder Scrolls 6 on the backburner. Both games were announced at E3 2018, but while Starfield is targeting a release for late next year, The Elder Scrolls 6 remains in pre-production. Based on the usual timescale of Bethesda's development, that could mean that Elder Scrolls fans wind up waiting another several years before finally getting a chance to revisit Tamriel. Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.
Wednesday Wisdom Proverbs 29 1 He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn.3 Whoso loves wisdom rejoices his father: but he that keeps company with harlots spends his substance.4 The king by judgment establishes the land: but he that receives gifts overthrows it.5 A man that flatters his neighbour spreads a net for his feet.6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous does sing and rejoice.7 The righteous considers the cause of the poor: but the wicked regards not to know it.8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.9 If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.11 A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards.12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the Lord lightens both their eyes.14 The king that faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases: but the righteous shall see their fall.17 Correct your son, and he shall give you rest; yes, he shall give delight to your soul.18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keeps the law, happy is he.19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.20 See You a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.21 He that delicately brings up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.22 An angry man stirs up strife, and a furious man abounds in transgression.23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.24 Whoso is partner with a thief hates his own soul: he hears the oath, and reveals it not.25 The fear of man brings a snare: but whoso puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe.26 Many seek the ruler’s favour; but every man’s judgment comes from the Lord.27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. Important Events 1730 Today is the anniversary of the death of the English writer and poet Elijah Fenton. His tomb is ornamented with a pair of sleeping angels. Alexander Pope composed his epitaph. The first two lines are inspired by the poet Richard Crashaw. At Easthamstead, Berks, 1729 THIS modest stone, what few vain marbles can, May truly say, Here lies an Honest Man; A Poet blessed beyond the Poet's fate, Whom Heav'n kept sacred from the proud and great; Foe to loud Praise, and friend to learned Ease, 5 Content with Science in the vale of peace. Calmly he looked on either life, and here Saw nothing to regret, or there to fear; From Nature's temperate feast rose satisfied, Thank'd Heav'n that he had lived, and that he died. Elijah Fenton is remembered for working with Alexander Pope and William Broome to translate the Greek epic poem The Odyssey. Pope had specifically asked Elijah for his help with the major undertaking. Elijah is credited with many wonderful verses: Wedded love is founded on esteem. Beware of flattery, 'tis a weed Which oft offends the very idol--vice, Whose shrine it would perfume. O blissful poverty! Nature, too partial to thy lot, assigns Health, freedom, innocence, and downy peace. In a book about Elijah Fenton, it says, “It is late justice, to Fenton, to point out how often the footsteps of the greater poet may be tracked to his garden plots; how the tones, and something more, of his verses, are echoed in strains which give them their best chance of immortality. Pope was accustomed to say that Fenton's “Ode to Spring” addressed to Lord John Gower, was the best Ode in the English language since Dryden’s Cecilia.” O'er winter's long inclement sway, At length the lusty Spring prevails; And swift to meet the smiling May, Is wafted by the Western gales. Around him dance the rosy Hours, And damasking the ground with flowers, With ambient sweets perfume the morn; With shadowy verdure flourished high, A sudden youth the groves enjoy, Where Philomel laments forlorn. — Elijah Fenton, Ode to Spring Nature permits for various gifts to fall On various climes, nor smiles alike on all. The Latian eternal verdure wear, And flowers spontaneous crown the smiling year; But who manures a wild Norwegian Hill To raise the Jasmine or the coy Jonquil? Who finds the peach among the savage sloes Or in black Scythia sees the blushing Rose? Here golden grain waves over the teeming fields And they're the vine her racy purple yields; Rich on the cliff the British Oak ascends Proud to survey the seas her power defends; Her sovereign title to the flag she proves Scornful of softer India's spicy Groves. — Elijah Fenton, Variety of Nature 1796 It's the birthday of the artist Camille Corot ("CAH-MEEL CAH-row"), born in Paris. Corot was a French painter, famous for his landscapes, and he inspired the landscape painting of the Impressionists. Corot's quotes about painting are inspiring to gardeners. Here's a little sample of his sensitive perspective on the natural world: "Beauty in art is truth bathed in an impression received from nature. I am struck upon seeing a certain place. While I strive for conscientious imitation, I yet never for an instant, lose the emotion that has taken hold of me." Here are some of Corot's words about Nature at the end of the day: "...Everything is vague, confused, and Nature grows drowsy. The fresh evening air sighs among the leaves - the birds, these voices of the flowers are saying their evening prayer." Imagine sitting beside Corot as he wrote, "I hope with all my heart there will be painting in heaven." Gardeners would reply, "I hope there is a garden." 1907 On this day, Orville Redenbacher was born. Orville was a USDA scientist and the co-creator of a new hybrid of popcorn called "snowflake." It was lighter and fluffier than traditional popped kernels, and Orville became a household name with his commercials for his popcorn. To this day, Orville Redenbacher is the number one selling popcorn in the world. Nebraska produces more popcorn than any other state in the country. Unearthed Words Today we celebrate some of the flowers of the July garden. We like people not just because they are good, kind, and pretty but for some indefinable spark, usually called “chemistry,” that draws us to them and begs not to be analyzed too closely. Just so with plants. In that case, my favorite has to be Physoplexis comosa. This is not merely because I am writing at the beginning of July when the plant approaches maximum attractiveness. — Geoffry B. Charlesworth, garden author, On the Physoplexis comosa or the Devil's Claw or Tufted Horned Rampion Light love in a mist, by the midsummer moon misguided, Scarce seen in the twilight garden if gloom insist, Seems vainly to seek for a star whose gleam has derided Light love in a mist. All day in the sun, when the breezes do all they list. His soft blue raiment of cloudlike blossom abided Unrent and unwithered of winds and of rays that kissed. Blithe-hearted or sad, as the cloud or the sun subsided, Love smiled in the flower with a meaning whereof none wist Save two that beheld, as a gleam that before them glided. Light love in a mist. — Algernon Charles Swinburne, English poet, Love in a Mist The marigold, whose courtier’s face Echoes the sun, and doth unlace Her at his rise, at his full stop Packs and shuts up her gaudy shop. — John Cleveland, English poet, The Marigold Grow That Garden Library Scentual Garden By Ken Druse This book came out in October of 2019, and the subtitle is Exploring the World of Botanical Fragrance. The author Joe Lamp'l said, "A brilliant and fascinating journey into perhaps the most overlooked and under-appreciated dimension of plants. Ken's well-researched information, experience, and perfect examples, now have me appreciating plants, gardens, and designs in a fresh and stimulating way." Ken Druse is a celebrated lecturer and an award-winning author and photographer who has been called "the guru of natural gardening" by the New York Times. He is best known for his 20 garden books published over the past 25 years. And, after reading this book, I immediately began to pay much more attention to fragrance in my garden. The book is 256 illustrated pages of 12 categories of scented plant picks and descriptions for the garden - from plants to shrubs and trees. Today's Botanic Spark 1987 Today in 1987, The Indianapolis Star announced the release of the biography of the legendary turn-of-the-century Indiana botanist Charles Clemon Deam who went by "Charlie". This biography of Charlie was written by Robert C. Kriebel, editor of the Lafayette Journal and Courier. Charlie Deam was a self-taught botanist, and he also served the state of Indiana as a forester. And there's a little story about Charlie in this article from The Indianapolis Star that I thought you would enjoy: In his home herbarium, Charlie kept a loaded pistol in a desk drawer. One time, Charlie was hosting a guest in his home. Charlie brought his guest into the herbarium, and they began chatting about plants and taxonomy. Charlie gave his guest quite fright when, without warning, he opened the desk drawer, pulled out the gun, and fired two or three shots through the open window. And all the while, Charlie uttered some disparaging comments about the "canine ancestry of a rabbit," that had been terrorizing his garden.
This episode I am joined by librarian Andrew Kelly. Andrew is a library professional from Perth who has worked in both public and special libraries. He has spent the last few years earning a name for himself in the world of library makerspaces and 3D printing. In 2017 he helped set up the Perth branch of newCardigan - a group for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum workers, and is currently newCardigan Treasurer. This episode we did something a little different … a few weeks ago I posted a pairing of a favourite read of mine, The Rook by Daniel O'Malley. Andrew saw my post on Twitter and we started chatting about the fact that he had not read the book, but had watched the TV series and loved it and was nervous about reading the book, and I had not watched the TV series as I didn't want it to ruin the book! So we made a pact to each read or watch the other format of this story and report back. We will be doing some pairings but first, a rant! The pairings: The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet (Wayfarers #1) by Becky Chambers Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the ageing Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. But it's about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunnelling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn't part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. Andrew paired this book with a classic Daiquiri cocktail, refreshing and delicious! All Systems Red (Book 1 in the Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. However, in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighbouring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. This is a delightfully snarky, fun, fast-paced page-turner. I love the main character of Murderbot, it is so darkly, drily sardonic. I would pair this with something really salty but really fun to drink. When I was looking at what cocktails that might be I stumbled across this delicious sounding drink, the Ponche de Champagne which is a punch (yes, that is a mild reference to Murderbot's capabilities) that includes salt - roasted plantain syrup, banana, passion-fruit, star- anise and cinnamon with champagne floated on top.

Episode 14: Novellas In This Episode The Book Evangelists discuss All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey Morning Chatter Staying safer at home hasn't led us to more frequent reading or more frequent podcasting. We are glad to be podcasting together today. Marian and Lissa are looking at the popularity of the novella as a form and a length. As longtime NaNoWriMo writers, we are both familiar with what a 50,000 word story can do. The description of All Systems Red by Martha Wells from goodreads.com: Murderbot Book #1 In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid—a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth The description of Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey from goodreads.com: In Upright Women Wanted, award-winning author Sarah Gailey reinvents the pulp Western with an explicitly antifascist, near-future story of queer identity. Are you a coward or are you a librarian? “That girl's got more wrong notions than a barn owl's got mean looks.” Esther is a stowaway. She's hidden herself away in the Librarian's book wagon in an attempt to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her–a marriage to the man who was previously engaged to her best friend. Her best friend who she was in love with. Her best friend who was just executed for possession of resistance propaganda. The future American Southwest is full of bandits, fascists, and queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing. This blog post is spoiler-free. On the podcast, we discuss and compare, All Systems Red by Martha Wells and Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey and our discussion in the podcast is filled with minor spoilers, so please read the books before you listen if you are into that kind of experience. We'll be here for you when you finish! Discussion Marian's Crackpot theory about novellas includes the cover price and size, magazine publishing trends, ebook publishing trends, and the shortening of attention spans. Other recent novellas we recommend include: Finna by Nino Cipri This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone “I need my dismemberment to be toward social justice and community change.” – Lissa, describing why the violence in both of these books is somehow palatable to her otherwise suspense and gore averse preferences. Novellas leave room for other characters to have their own stories told in other novellas. Or sometimes they leave room for characters who are a huge presence on the page to continue to take up space in the reader's imagination. Upright Women Wanted followup book idea: “Cye and Esther's Guide to Living on the Road” with lots of chapters about fighting fascism and also recipes. Lissa wants to read this. Someone please write it. Coming Up Next episode: Marian and Lissa will pitch their re-write or update or adaptation proposals of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and discuss whether we would truly ever want to rewrite/adapt a public domain book into a new story. An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked. Proverbs 29
Daniel Esh – Sunday Sermon – Wisdom Series: Part 3
A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. This is my application today. 1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. 2 When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. 3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. 4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it. 5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. 6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice. 7 The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it. 8 Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. 9 If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest. 10 The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul. 11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards. 12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. 13 The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the Lord lighteneth both their eyes. 14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever. 15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. 16 When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall. 17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul. 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. 19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer. 20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length. 22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression. 23 A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. 24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not. 25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. 26 Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the Lord. 27 An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked Proverbs 29

Going Against the Grain - Pt. 4
Alma shows us how best to work with those that don't believe the way we do or who aren't acting the way they should. Be Humble and Helpful or Scornful and Contentious. A powerful chapter for self reflection.

Last Sunday we looked at the Simple and the Scornful mostly. This week we see what a foolish person is to God. Just because we are a believer doesn't mean we can't become foolish!

What makes the wise different from the simple, the foolish, and the scornful? Without realizing it many Christians have asked questions that set them up to receive as wisdom a foolish or simple answer. Take enough of these in and you can become scornful to the wisdom of God. Questions born from wisdom we have received, help us to grow. Questions born from a simple understanding of spiritual principles cause us to stagnate in our spiritual growth. It is easier then most think to discern the difference and we will look at some Bible examples of this in action.
