What would it feel like for other people to love me if they were to truly see me and truly know me as I am right now?Today we meet Esmé and we're talking about the queer book that saved their life: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. And Martha joins us for the conversation!Esmé has been slinging radical books at Firestorm since 2019. They wear multiple hats including communications, event facilitation, and offsite sales. She also authored Witch King, City of Bones, The Wizard Hunters, Wheel of the Infinite, and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer, as well as YA fantasy novels, short stories, and nonfiction. In All Systems Red, the first book in The Murderbot Diaries, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests on a distant planet, shadowed by their Company-supplied SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module. Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.Special Limited SeriesThis episode is part of a special limited series of episodes featuring only guests who are owners or staff at LGBTQ bookstores. Mark interviews Dominician Gennari, a writer, storyteller, composer, and musician about his multimedia book and novella opus, The War for Ascension. Prior to the interview Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, a word from this episode's sponsor, as well as a word about a previous episode sponsor. One Hand Screaming: 20 Haunting Years - Kickstarter NEWS: Please note that the Feb/March 2025 Writers Retreat at Sea from Cruising Writers has been cancelled. During their conversation Mark and Dominician talk about: How Dominician's creative and artistic voice started with music at about the age of 13/14 Discovering Tolkien about six or seven years later How, when writing, Dominician was imagining the accompanying soundtrack and the way the process became inseparable Learning from one of the most incredible music teachers Dominician's Italian heritage and how his family would gather in the kitchen and, while cooking together, would sing works like the music from Madame Butterfly and other classical sources How that learning is layered and added in to the other styles and genres of music that Dominician composes and plays The way that Richard Wagner would compose music with the elaborate use of leitmotifs (musical phrases associated with individual characters, places, ideas, or plot elements) Dominician picking ten of the key moments in his story to hit really hard with his own compositions The various members of the local musical community who participated in the recording About the 2nd track, "Light of the Hydroverse" Advice that David Farland, a mentor who worked with Dominician, offered in relation to this project Being told by Dave Farland that Dominician reminded him of Gene Wolfe Unpacking numerous languages in order to re-package them into the original language he created for this universe The Kenorian greeting in the language Dominician invented which says "may serenity follow you" Working with producers on a script adaptation of The War for Ascension but coming to irreconcilable differences that resulted in an end to that project How Dominician connected with Dave Farland via a course he took online from Writers of the Future Turning down what could have been millions of dollars on that cancelled Hollywood project How people can get ahold of the accompanying soundtrack The process that Dominician uses when writing the stories and composing the music What's next for Dominician And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on the idea of creating in the kitchen and the power of that type of collaboration, as well as the integrity to say no to a huge opportunity if it crosses the line of what is deemed as acceptible. As a young child, he would fantasise about imaginary creatures living in his backyard and he would dream of magical worlds. As the years unfolded, Dominician's creative spirit flourished, giving birth to his mythical world, Númaria. This world, meticulously crafted, boasts a rich history and a complex ecosystem, providing the perfect backdrop for the vast timeline of his unfolding story called The War for Ascension. Submerging himself in the fields of forbidden archaeology, esoteric wisdom, USAPs of the US government, and ancient warfare, a great awakening occurred as the veil of secrecy was lifted from his eyes. After learning humanity's obscured past was stranger than fiction, his desire to create a truthful and artistic message through fiction arose. This acquired knowledge segued into writing his epic fantasy series The War for Ascension and the sequential standalone series The Ascension Archive. Having spent 3 years working alongside renowned Hollywood producers, Dominician garnered invaluable knowledge of screen craft and storytelling. But due to unforeseen events, he chose an alternative path to pursue his dream of writing wholesome fantasy stories. Guided by fantasy author and genius, David Farland, Dominician is set to expand his grand mythology, The War for Ascension into a multimedia book and novella opus, along with accompanying soundtracks of epic music. Dominician is also the producer of the epic industrial metal band Ark of Light, and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor and National Champion. He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. Our guest today is the CEO and founder of editaudio, Steph Colbourn.editaudio is a podcast production company with a mission to hire more women, nb and trans people in media. Founded in 2014, Steph put together an amazing queer team of producers and staff to make the audio industry more representative of what the word actually looks like. And it looks queer!Steph (they/she) shares with us the book that saved her life: The Waves by Virginia Woolf. And what are we exploring in this episode? What's that feeling when you read an unrequited love story from decades before your time? How does that feel to know we were there, queer people falling in love? And how does it feel feel to read on the page your queer life being normalized, even your anxiety? The Waves is one of Woolf's most experimental novels. Some say, her masterpiece. It begins with six children—three boys and three girls—playing in a garden by the sea, and follows their lives as they grow up, experience friendship and love, and grapple with the death of their beloved friend.Connect with StephTwitter: @steph_colbournInstagram: @stephcolbournLinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/steph-colbourn-52b11212aemail: hello@editaud.iowebsite: https://editaud.ioBuy The WavesVisit our Bookshop or buy immediately: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9780156949606Become an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! Meet four-time HQ MIX Trophy winner for best Webcomic, Mário César and his new book Blessed Cure. Like Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, César's Blessed Cure uses comics to explore queer life. In this book, our hero, Acacio do Nascimento, knew he was a different boy from others. He would rather be playing with dolls than playing soccer. The hula hoop interested him more than cowboy pistols. Scared by the possibility of their son being a homosexual, Acacio's parents begin conversion therapy, starting when he was five years old, to make him a "normal boy" like the others.Mario Cesar is an awarded comic book's author from Brazil. He has published comics since 2006 and he was one of the first openly gay authors to address issues of sexual and gender diversity in Brazilian comics with the book Ciranda da Solidão (2013). He is also one of the creators and producers of POC CON, the first brazilian LGBTQ+ Comic Con.Buy Blessed CureHead to our Bookshop store or buy directly: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781908030542Connect with Mário CésarTwitter: @mas_que_marioInstagram: @mas_que_marioBecome an Associate Producer!Become an Associate Producer of our podcast through a $20/month sponsorship on Patreon! North Shore Writing Inspiration. The host for this show is Ken Burtness. The guests are Constance Hale and Chris McKinney. Life is filled with distractions, especially in cities where people, tasks and responsibilities are always demanding attention. Finding time for new projects, even highly desired ones, is hard. If activities are quickly started and quickly finished, then they can be squeezed in. But if they are slow starting, like the blank page staring at the would-be writer, if they demand thought and study, these can be very difficult to squeeze into one's life. Enter the Retreat where one is geographically pulled away from one's normal busy life and relocated to a quiet, restful place where time is available and plentiful. A place where others have come to work on similar projects, a place where teachers are available to guide and support these projects, that is an opportunity to follow one's desire, that is a Retreat. The ThinkTech YouTube Playlist for this show is https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQpkwcNJny6mFH9xYQtbk7193WUqTo1u4Please visit our ThinkTech website at https://thinktechhawaii.com and see our Think Tech Advisories at https://thinktechadvisories.blogspot.com.

Last year, as inaugural Krant Fellow at Storyknife's Writers Retreat in Alaska, Stephanie rediscovered the intangible thing that law and the arts share: through mercy or otherwise, they search for the mystery within people. That's what she's looking for.Author of the novella My Xanthi, Stephanie is a writer and lawyer who draws on a first career on and off Broadway. Stephanie has a multiracial family with strong memories of immigration – her first language was Greek, and not all her grandparents could read and write. Though she became a professional woman in ways they couldn't have imagined, she still care about people's capacity to transcend hard times with humor and resilience. Ask her Chinese-American sister-in-law, who saw the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” and said, “That could be my family.” Bingo: she saw the struggle for identity and the daily nuttiness and grace of striving families everywhere. Stephanie would love to talk about that with readers. As a woman lucky enough to have had several careers, Stephanie often write to pay tribute to her forebears or people like them, whether at the Mexican border or elsewhere. her family's aspirations were not always identical to her own, though. she was educated at Brown and Yale yet for a while, she chose to be a performing artist in a family of attorneys. That pushed some boundaries. After she became a lawyer, too, she discovered that the arts and law provide special windows into the human story. She now uses both perspectives to become an author. She cares about the differences between law and justice, about the elevation of elder women characters, and about the mystery that lifts people facing the almost unspeakable. Stephanie hopes humor leavens her approach. Goodness knows, her Greek grandmothers provided enough material. Stephanie suspects the same richness lurks in many listeners' families, and that they search for their unique internal mysteries as well.www.stephaniecotsirilos.com

Telling some of the story of the Flower Wars of the Aztec era, Nico Amador's poem pits wars against creation. In a poem that begins by recalling creation myths from multiple cultures, he then poses questions about why: Why would people sacrifice their own people to keep a god happy? Why would any god benefit from people's deaths? Evoking how the Flower Wars contributed to the Aztec downfall, this poem also wonders about wars today: Who benefits from a war? Who decides who should die? Why?Nico Amador has been published in a number of journals and anthologies. His chapbook, Flower Wars, was selected as the winner of the Anzaldúa Poetry Prize and was published by Newfound Press in 2017. He is a grant recipient of the Vermont Arts Council, an alumni of the Lambda Literary Foundation's Writers Retreat and an MFA candidate at Bennington College.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

What wakes you up at 3:30 am? For me, it is usually ideas of how I want to improve the ways I serve Fempreneurs. On Sunday, February 14th I woke up at 3:30 am, and after an hour on my mental hamster wheel of exciting thoughts, I practiced what I preach. I grabbed my cell phone, opened the voice recording app, and recorded my thoughts which I decided to share in this podcast episode. February 14th was the final day of my 10 days reset break during which I reflected on the progress I've made and where I am feeling called to focus my attention and action. This episode also addresses the question I hear often: "How do I actually connect with the amazing women in the Fempreneur Community?".Find out more about our online community, FempreneurLand.Register today for the 6 week Fempreneur Marketing School.List your business in the FempreneurLand Directory (it's free!)Follow Lyndsie and FempreneurLand on Facebook and Instagram. Thanks for listening!

Ever wondered whether you’re better to strike out on your own with your writing career, pitch directly to publishers or hire an agent? Haylee Nash, of The Nash Agency, outlines the pros and cons of each option, demystifying the publishing cycle in the process. But be warned, after listening to Nash, you’ll be hard pressed to justify not running with an expert. Think of an agent as an industry expert that has you as their primary focus in a publishing world that throws up more options every day. Besides, everyone needs a cheerleader and therapist, says Nash. In this episode we cover the following, and so much more: the benefits of editorial feedback how to pitch to publishers framing your work to sell the importance of a good bio the craft and business side of writing marketing opportunities what’s trending in 2019 managing your career Most importantly, Nash has a Writers Retreat happening at Mt Tamborine in Southeast Queensland in February, with guest tutors, Rachael Johns and Josephine Moon. You can find out more about Haylee and The Nash Agency https://www.thenashagency.com.au/ (here) and the Writers Retreat https://www.thenashagency.com.au/2018-writers-retreat (here.) Read Full Transcript Mel: Today, I have with me Haylee Nash. Welcome Hayley. Now I heard all about hayday from the beautiful Amy Seton. So of course I had to track down and bring her on to the podcast. What I hadn't realized Hayley is that you used to work at Pan Macmillan and Harlequin. You represent some of our best Australian authors, Josephine Moon, Lily Malone, Annie Seaton and Lisa Ireland to name a few. Haylee: Yes it is. I currently have 18 signed. Mel: We have our very own agent here in front of us representing both indie authors and traditionally published authors with some depth of experience. How long have you been an agent? Haylee: I'vee been an agent for two years. It's been an incredibly interesting journey but really fulfilling and very nice for my ego because it was terrifying. Haylee: Starting out on my own particularly as I have a child and a husband and we know there's bills to pay. But it's been so rewarding absolutely rewarding. Mel: I'm sitting here looking everyone at this amazingly healthy glowing woman who just got back from the gym. If there's any reason that you need an entrepreneurial life it's so that you can do what you want when you want and work until midnight every night. Haylee: That's exactly right. It's like I can so I can surf if I wanted to in the morning and be up at 6 to play Barbies with my three year old daughter, the life of a working mother. Mel: You talk about appraising manuscripts. You've got all these amazing authors on your books at the moment. Being represented by an agent has actually changed over the years hasn't it? Haylee: Yes. I think there's a lot of people now who are represented who have been published. I don't have the exact percentages on me but because publishers have to be smarter than me I'm more connected than ever just because of the wide range of things that are selling and the way that trends and genres change. They're more connected to writers so agents. Haylee: Some people find it on their own which is brilliant. Haylee: I'm always careful to tell people what I do what their money or their percentage. And also to let them know if they really need me or not because a lot of authors have found a publisher. The Publishers direct to them because they have a huge amount of followers or whether they have a hugely successful blog or YouTube channel. And often if they're speaking. It's a very business savvy and they're speaking directly to their audience and that's what the show is. Sometimes they don't need an agent. Haylee: However at the very very least it's useful to have one because you know the contracts and know where there's meeting room. What we get to be back off basically and we get to make...

For the second time we take our podcast out of the urban setting and take inspiration from the rural idyll. In this case the rural idyll was extremely cold, so it wore its hoody indoors the whole time. This is mostly an update of where we're at. Kate embarks on her new book, Cathy reflects on her process and Máire talks through what it's like to go through edits with a publisher. Presented by Cathy Clarke, Kate Mulholland and Máire Brophy. Produced by Máire Brophy Music (as usual) by Gavin Mulhall
Peter Gajdics talks about "The Inheritance of Shame", dealing with trauma, surviving conversion therapy and how remembering helps in his recovery. Photo by Erich Saide Photographer Biography Peter Gajdics (pronounced “Guy-ditch”) was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, to immigrant parents from Europe. Gajdics knew from an early age that he was gay, but, for myriad reasons, that truth only seemed to cause him pain. In his early 20s, while struggling with an overwhelming sense of shame, Gajdics turned to a local psychiatrist for help. Within months he found himself embroiled in a bizarre sort of conversion therapy that attempted to “cure” him of his homosexuality. The Inheritance of Shame documents Gajdics’ six-year journey through, and eventually out of, this therapy; the legal battle with his former psychiatrist; his complicated family history; and his attempts to reclaim his life—and, most especially, his truth. Peter is an award-winning writer whose essays, short memoir and poetry have appeared in, among others, The Advocate, New York Tyrant, The Gay and Lesbian Review / Worldwide, Cosmonauts Avenue, and Opium. He is a recipient of writers grants from Canada Council for the Arts (for non-fiction and fiction), a fellowship from The Summer Literary Seminars, and an alumni of Lambda Literary Foundation’s “Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBT Voices.” The Inheritance of Shame: A Memoir is his first book. Peter Gajdics is available for speaking engagements. Vancouver writer Stacey Matson is the author of the belly-aching, laugh-out-loud Diary of Total Genius trilogy of books that are about the trials and tribulations of junior high student Arthur Bean. She recently the first three months of 2017 in Dawson City, Yukon, as the writer-in-residence at Berton House Writers’ Retreat. While there she worked on a mystery novel for kids about D.B. Cooper, the infamous 1970s skyjacker who parachuted from a plane with $200,000 and was never seen again. This recording is taken from the last days of her residency when she spoke at the Dawson City Community Library about her Yukon experience, her development as a writer, and read excerpts from past work as well as her current work-in-progress. The event was produced by the library in association with CFYT 106.9FM The Spirit of Dawson.
Once upon a time lasts forever; deep, dark and complex, crafting timeless stories of magic and fantasy, bringing centuries old stories to new readers…where do I stop? Five pages of research notes and I’m just getting to the beginning of Kate Forsyth’s talents as a bestselling and prolific novelist and poet, writing across genres, for all ages – gosh, the press-release words keep on coming to describe this most amazing and generous of Australian authors. I start to get excited when I find the research notes written by Kate for her latest novel, already drafted, edited and ready to go for a September 2017 release. Beauty in Thorns, a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, has some amazing women characters based on the passions and scandals of pre-Raphaelite circles of artists and poets. If, once again, I sound like a press release, please forgive me…capturing this woman’s spirit is only possible in the listening. All the rest is mere words. Kate shares with us how her research process has changed over the years, how she organises her research and the delight of the process itself…then she tells us how she ruthlessly cuts tens of thousands of words if it’s necessary to make a story work. As far as the craft of writing goes, we can do no better than to take notes as we listen, and listen again, to the advice of one of the most generous writers I’ve had the privilege to meet. Call me a fangirl, but I’m already saving up for a Writers Retreat with Kate in the Cotswalds, with a side trip to Oxford of course. And yes, Sam, you can come too. You can find out more about Kate, her books, and her research process http://www.kateforsyth.com.au/ (here.)
