In this episode, Bryan and Josh dip their toes into the idle/incremental game space! Three idle games have been chosen: Universal Paperclips, SPACEPLAN, and (the) Gnorp Apologue. All are quite different manifestations of the idle/incremental game and each has its own strengths and unique offerings to explore. Universal Paperclips (2017) was created by Frank Lantz of New York University and has been acclaimed as one of the best of the genre. It features a unique retelling of the paperclip maximizer thought experiment. SPACEPLAN (2017) was developed by Jake Hollands and published by Devolver Digital and features striking visuals and a relaxing synth-heavy soundtrack. Finally, (the) Gnorp Apologue (2023) is the game that spurred the conversation on idle games to begin with and as its description states: “is a game where you help small beings called gnorps get rich”. Its also quite visually interesting any layers in some unique ‘management game' style mechanics. So listen in while Bryan goes to make some dinner and Josh stares with wrapped attention at his computer screen and they jointly put together their thoughts on this varied and interesting genre.Three Word Reviews: Universal Paperclips: Bryan - Existential Thought Experiment / Josh - An Argument AgainstSPACEPLAN: Bryan - Perfect Entry Point / Josh - Waiting for Story(the) Gnorp Apologue: Bryan - Prestige Incremental Management / Josh - Spectacle, Strategy, Screensaver
Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. It's our first duo episode in a little while, as we've only got Kevin & Randall in the house this week — but we've still got plenty of video gaming goodies to dive into, so let's get things rolling! Randall gets things started up with a quick update on Diablo IV, as he and his wife have been getting back into the couch co-op grind before bed lately. After that, Kevin digs into a couple of puzzle games that he's been really enjoying (and also making him do some serious thinking) on Nintendo Switch — Railbound and Upaon: A Snake's Journey. Finally, Randall wraps things up with another update on his resolution game for this year, Ys: Book I & II, as he slogs through the final bits of the first chapter, and continues onto the next! **Sorry for the extra background noise this week, and the resulting handful of choppier-than-usual edits!** Timestamps: Diablo IV - 00:02:37 Railbound - 00:10:20 Upaon: A Snake's Journey - 00:16:34 Ys: Book I & II - 00:24:45 Thanks for taking the time to listen! Hannah and Tim have been dating for a little over a year and prior to this weekend Hannah tells us there were no red flags between them. However, this past weekend Hannah and Tim decided to watch a movie together and Hannah noticed that Tim somehow changed his background wallpaper to a different photo. Hannah decided to see what happened and she saw that Tim had three backgrounds: one of him and Hannah, a beach background, and one of Tim and his coworker Kaycee. Normally Hannah is well-received by Tim's coworkers, but Kaycee has always been a little aloof to Hannah and now she's starting to wonder if there is another reason why. When she asked Tim why he had Kaycee as one of his background photos, he said Kaycee did it as a joke, but Hannah isn't sure Tim is telling the truth. We call Tim pretending to send him a free bouquet of flowers and when we ask him who he wants them sent to, Tim asks if we can send them to his office. Find out what‘s really going on in today's all NEW War of the Roses!
