Episode 34 – Show NotesWe started with a quick update on our Atonement series from 2018 with a discussion arising from the recent Unbelievable Showhttps://www.premierchristianradio.com/Shows/Saturday/Unbelievable/Episodes/Unbelievable-Debating-Wrath-Sin-and-Penal-Substitution-William-Lane-Craig-and-Greg-BoydWe applaud WLC for giving it a go to explain Penal Substitution rationally, but Frances’ legal mind unpicked his arguments based on precedents in US/UK law: employer’s liability and legal fictions. The we got stuck into hell with Andrew giving his story of anguish, research and discovery on it as a Christian. This led into a discussion on the emotional aspects of holding a belief in traditional hell. Then we started the long story of hell and afterlife beliefs with the early Old Testament, where there seemed to be no belief in the afterlife, through to Jesus who did teach frequently on hell in Matthew, Mark & Luke, together with useful material in John’s gospel. A Think Queerly Podcast Discussion with Shawn BanksLast week I published a post on my Medium publication by Shawn Banks titled, "Why White Gay Men Have Ruined LGBTQ+ Pride Month For Me." My involvement in the comments raised a number of questions in me, so I asked Shawn if he would come on the podcast and have a conversation. We discussed the reasons that prompted him to write the article. He tells me that he was watching the momentum and social media focus on the Black Lives Matters demonstrations in the United States. Then in the first week of June (being Pride Month), he started to notice people he follows on social media shifting their focus more to Pride content and wanting to enjoy Pride without having to pay attention to everything else going on. He then realized that most of these people where white gay men.Show NotesWe speak about the various levels of white privilege (and why that’s a form of white supremacy), the intersectionality of “otherness”, and the significant difference between prejudice and racism; The challenge of activist fatigue, empathy avoidance, yet choosing to continue with the momentum of this movement towards improving lives for Black People and working towards greater equality; How social media (Instagram) is educating on missing Black history; How many white people don’t like being called out, even in general terms, about white privilege, prejudice, or racism, and;Why resistance to change is a reaction to a lack of prediction and response in our environment and what we can do to reduce the stress that causes.Shawn Banks is 25 years old and originally from Clinton, MD. He currently resides in Chicago, IL. By day, he’s a men's stylist and by night, he’s a stand-up comedian who has been performing in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area for about a year. He considers myself a perpetual optimist who questions every facet of life and why we behave the way we do, which he displays in his sassy yet insightful style of stand-up. His Instagram is @Bankzzyyy (the only form of social media he uses consistently).Resources and further reading“White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” — Peggy McIntosh“Party and protest: the radical history of gay liberation, Stonewall and Pride” — Huw Lemmey“Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor” — Layla F. “Listen to your elders!” I know we’ve all heard that before, and the older we get—we realize we were told that for good reason! Not to date the latest guest to join the #YearOfTheVet family, Michael Anthony Carr, but this Kosovo era veteran brings some wisdom to the conversation from his childhood in the Bronx right before the beginning of Hip-Hop, to the longest and most tiresome (and rewarding) job we’ll ever have… Marriage.Having a nomad's heart, “Mike-C” (which I never once call him, but it seems like a very fitting Bronx name) talks about culture, traveling, and how all that facilitated this journey for him to find his brand, which as of today we can address as the Dreadlock Connoisseur!Michael is the epitome of an entrepreneur, being that he’s found himself working “on” radios in the service, to petroleum, computer repair, phone cards, investing, sales, wine, blogging, and some jobs that shall remain nameless in writing, and you’ll have to catch it in the conversation. However, even with all that background of being a Jack-of-all-Trades, Michael soon recognized from “being an entrepreneur, and continuously falling over,” he learned that his mindset of “make money, and run your own stuff [isn’t] a true vision…” and that is where he really learned about his brand: Leadership.---Show NotesWe literally talk about so much that I couldn’t fit into the intro, and if I wrote it out, it’d be a publishable short story… so here are some bullet points of our time together! We talk about: Growing up in an artistic house, The secret to a loooong marriage, Life before Hip-Hop, Traveling, Mortality ← Make sure you hear this right here… Building your own legacy, Using Space-A (space available flights) to fly to cities before you get out to recon the area you may move to! Being resourceful, Learning from past mistakes, Mindsets, Being capable of ANYTHING, Racial divides, Standing up for your peers, and selflessness, Taking sabbaticals to reset, Dealing with survivor's guilt and PTSD today…… and seriously so much more. I was honored to have a seasoned veteran such as Michael on #YearOfTheVet, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did!*I want to apologize to Mike for taking over his conversation at times… I was just THAT engaged with what he had to say!”*

Change is inevitable and you are in control of how you manage it. Your emotions, your actions and your attitude are all dictated by how you deal with an ever-changing environment. Join Crina and Kirsten as they explore tools to get a grip in this time of extreme change.SHOW NOTESWe are deep in the COVID-19 pandemic and out hosts, Crina and Kirsten, are deep in innovation with their remote recording session on Change and Transitions. This is Part I of a two-part series. In Part I Crina and Kirsten talk about change and transition, why it is so hard and what to do about it. This is the hard work we do before we get to the good stuff - innovations, which will be discussed in Part II.Crina and Kirsten talk about their experiences with the change that the Covid-19 pandemic has created in their own lives and those of their family and friends and of course, listeners. The big take-away is that we are all in different places. Some folks have been forced to innovate at hyper-speed, such as medical professionals, governments, first responders and newly remote workers. Others of us are in a holding pattern or home with no work. All of us have some uncertainty. Will our work change? Will the changes that have happened be forever? Will I be able to adapt to this change and what will it look like in the long-term? In order to help listeners navigate change and transition, Crina and Kirsten focus on a model, developed by William Bridges. Bridges asserts that change is something that is external, where transition is an internal process. According to Bridges, “Transition is not just a nice way to say change. It is the inner process through which people come to terms with a change, as they let go of how things used to be and reorient themselves to the way that things are now.” Crina and Kirsten also talk about strategies for moving through transition including: don’t underestimate how hard change can be; acknowledge your sense of loss; take control; acknowledge your feelings; and take care of yourself. In episode five, Tim and Tuesday unpack why they’ve declined invitations to grow bigger, choosing instead to make The Outside small, flexible, and connected.1.05 —— SHOW NOTESWe are totally committed to building capacity within the communities and organizations we engage. We don’t want to build a dependency on ourselves for the people we’re serving. We create the conditions for people to get to work on stuff themselves.Bookmarking:Our deliberateness of working with managers of one.Something about this design, the structure of our business that forces a surrendering of control. That we work in the void, the space between things. The more rigid we become the less able we actually are to be responsive.Tim notes ‘managers of one’ with link to the book REWORKWe’ve never got bigger, we’ve just got more connected… it’s allowed us to go to greater and greater scale in our work.In your working relationships, seek out ease. The work is hard enough. Our classic one-liner: We’re not going to do it for you. We’re going to do it with you.Letting go of control is not an abdication of responsibility. The Void—we are bringing together multiple stakeholders who are bringing people together. We need to be hyper flexible, anti-fragilePoem: Lemn Sissay, Listener: ArchitectureSong: Babba Maal & Mumford and Sons: There will be timeSubscribe to the podcast now—in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher or anywhere else you find podcasts. Episode 3 - Show NotesWe dive straight into an interview with our first guest –Andrew has a wonderful discussion with a Christian John Nelson who has studied at Nottingham University. John’s studies included a deep dive into Historical Jesus research and he puts the recent and current research approaches into context. Then we move to our section “Reason and God” and we respond to Chapter 6 of the Christian book “Evidence for God: 50 Arguments for Faith from the Bible, History, Philosophy and Science” by Mike Licona and William Dembski. It can be found on Amazon. The chapter is “Responding to the Argument from Evil: Three Approaches for the Theist”. The main point we address is the appeal to ignorance of what God would do to make ‘goods’ in the world. How do we know that God isn’t producing a greater good from the death of a child from illness? Cynics may call this ‘playing the mystery card’ but its more honourable name is ‘sceptical theism’. We mention the online 'Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy' on sceptical theism, see http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/skeptical-theism/also this is helpfulhttps://www.iep.utm.edu/skept-th/#SH5a Our main discussion is on the implications for the believer in adopting sceptical theism, which are unexpected, unwelcome and far reaching (in our view). For Is that in the Bible?, we look at the verses before that famous “my ways are higher than your ways” verse in Isaiah 55. We start at verse 6 and see a different message. For the Climate Endnote, Ed gives some parallels between the 1833 Abolition of Slavery in the British Empire and the massive policy change required to properly address climate change. Positive / Visible / Social (Organized): orchestras and the question of “public goods” Show NotesWe talk about orchestras, ask whether financial viability is a guide to the health or importance of particular institutions (hint: Betteridge’s Law), and look at how orchestras and other such institutions can be real markers of cultural health even for the people they don’t directly affect. Links An article in The New York Times, in 1903, referenced in The Perilous Life of Symphony Orchestras, by Robert J. Flanagan: The permanent orchestra season has, as usual, been financially a bad one all over the country. With the end of April… come the bills for those who pay the piper…. There is always a deficit, which public-spirited guarantors are called upon to pay year after year. A permanent orchestra, it seems pretty welle stablished by American experience, is not at present a paying institution, and is not likely immediately to become so…. [Neverthless,] the prevailing note of the guarantors of the America Orchestras is one of hopefulness. Things are coming on; the public is being educated; it will support the orchestras in larger and larger numbers till they are finally… self-supporting.
