We had the pleasure of interviewing Atlas Genius over Zoom video!Australian-based brothers, Atlas Genius are thrilled to release their new album End of the Tunnel. The band has put together a special recipe for the new collection of songs. Album ingredients: Lost love, guilt, passion, a dash of social commentary, existential crises, reckless abandon, and honest self-criticism. May contain traces of lust.2024 also marks the 11-year anniversary of the band's debut album When It Was Now, which features top charting songs including the certified platinum “Trojans” which hit #3 on the US Alternative charts and “If So” which peaked at #8. About Atlas Genius: Their Father was a self made man. He started as a miner, miles below the Australian earth before becoming a successful engineer. But his dreams fell apart following an incapacitating heart attack and a 2 year battle for his life. While their mother tended to their ailing father, the 3 teenage sons, Keith, Steven & Michael grew up quickly having to provide for the family. Eldest Keith's job at KFC wasn't enough, so the Jeffery brothers started playing gigs to pay the family's bills. Even the youngest, 14 year old drummer Michael, had to balance school work and early mornings with their late night cover band shows in the local Adelaide clubs. After a few years and the healing of their father, the band built a recording studio in their home's garage. Out of this home studio came the band's debut album and certified platinum hit single “Trojans.” Over their career, Atlas Genius has traveled the world supporting Weezer, Blink 182, Incubus, Silversun Pickups, The Neighborhood, Passion Pit, Imagine Dragons, The Kooks, and more. Atlas have performed at some of the most iconic and prestigious festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, Bottlerock, Shaky Knees, and Life is Beautiful and has been featured on Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, James Corden, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman and Jay Leno. Tony Hoffer is most known for his colorful, gritty productions and mixes that pop out of the speakers. His work over the years spans across alternative, electronic, rock, pop and indie. Hoffer spent his early years in Miami making music on 2 cassette decks and a reel-to-reel machine. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles and went ‘hi-tech' upgrading to a Tascam 4-track cassette deck falling in love with music and the art of production. Tony started off playing guitar in ‘post-punk' bands and fell in love with sampling his favorite post-punk records (Cure, Chameleons, Bauhaus) into his own songs and productions. His big break was co-producing Beck's double Grammy nominated album ‘Midnite Vultures' which was a hybrid of intricate sampling and live playing. That initially led to him to working with Air, Phoenix and Supergrass. Some additional credits include: M83, The Kooks, Belle & Sebastian, Silversun Pickups, The Fratellis, Depeche Mode, Fitz & The Tantrums, Blondie, Metric, Chromeo, Dirty Heads, The Snuts, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Ziggy Marley. Tony's productions and mixes have been nominated and/or won 7 Grammy's (US), 4 Juno's (Canada), 2 Aria's (Australia) and the Mercury Prize (UK). Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Butch Vig. He needs no introduction, but HERE WE GO. He is one of the most successful producers in rock history - having produced a handful of critically and commercially acclaimed albums such as Nirvana's ‘Nevermind', both ‘Gish' and ‘Siamese Dream' from Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth's ‘Dirty', Soul Asylum's ‘Let Your Big Light Shine', Foo Fighters' ‘Wasting Light', Jimmy Eat World's ‘Chase This Light' and the two latest Silversun Pickups records ‘Widow's Weeds' and ‘Physical Thrills'. In addition to producing, Butch is one helluva drummer - having played with Spooner, Fire Town, 5 Billion in Diamonds and, of course, Garbage. This was a milestone for both myself and the podcast; I love how it turned out. Butch is a sweetheart of a man and it made me love him and his career even more. I hope you enjoy the 5 records that helped shape Butch Vig into the producer and drummer he is today. Call / Text me YOUR picks @ (424) 253-6676 for a chance to be on the show. Just state: Your name Where you're calling from A little backstory of yourself as a drummer (whatever you feel comfortable with…but do some self promotion, we all want to support you!) Silversun Pickups join Scott once again to talk about Prince, dispel Wikipedia rumors, and to perform songs off their latest album “Physical Thrills.” Then, punk rocker Keith Keith returns to promote his new album. Later, Officer Marshal Sergeant stops by to shut down the podcast. Plus, opera singer Maximo Tootie drops by to adapt CBB into an opera.
Some bands make fans wait years between albums, and others have been very consistent with rolling out new releases. Early aughts groups Hot Chip and Silversun Pickups fall into the ladder category, dropping a new album like clockwork every two or three years. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their thoughts on Hot Chip's latest LP Freakout/Release (33:56) and Silversun Pickups' new project Physical Thrills (24:53), two albums which rely heavily on synths. The biggest indie news of this week came from a band no one has heard much from in over 15 years: McLusky. The Welsh group officially disbanded in 2005, but they just announced they're going on a North American tour this fall (41:45). Indiecast also discusses the 25th anniversary of Oasis' Be Here Now, partially reigniting the Blur vs. Oasis britpop discourse (47:39).In this week's Recommendation Corner (57:05), Ian tells listeners to check out Spielbergs' new album Vestli. Meanwhile, Steven endorses Cass McCombs' tenth studio album Heartmind.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 102 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. We also recently launched a visualizer for our favorite Indiecast moments. We had the pleasure of interviewing Steven Dayvid McKellar over Zoom video.South African-born but Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Steven Dayvid McKellar recently his new EP One and Zero. A product of the last two pandemic years, this EP proved to be a cathartic creative outlet for him. Bringing together introspective and personal observations of the intrinsic world of isolation with the larger cultural context that the polarized socio/political environment has bred in this country, One and Zero is at once an individual reflection and a social commentary. “It's both the times we're in and then the questions I'm asking myself. I think the intimacy comes from the desire to be more vulnerable and honest with myself and with others,” he continues. Minimalistic and introspective without pretense or artifice, One and Zero explores the isolation that the pandemic brought on. The former lead singer and primary songwriter for popular rock band Civil Twilight, McKellar dives deep into the subconscious and unearths melodies that strike the gut, eliciting deep seated emotions of heartbreak in his minimalistic electronic style. The title track tackles the stasis and stillness of being that the quarantine brought. The EP is rounded out by the contemplative “Fading In, Fading Out” and a live version of “The Promise?” from his previous album ETHIO. “I am in the middle of my life (most likely) and so the natural question that pops up is, am I fading in or am I fading out,” he asks in reference to the aforementioned track. “I'm both, at the same time, all the time.” Regarding the live take on “The Promise?” and why he opted to revisit that track from his 2020 album, he replies, “That song, and ETHIO as a whole, never really got heard or liked. And I'm really proud of that record and wanted to show another angle. My dear friend Daniel Shepherd filmed me while I played songs from that album outside in a parking lot on the bed of my truck. You can hear birds chirping in the background and I like that.” With Civil Twilight, McKellar had seen life on the big stage, having led the South African rock band through a very successful run, sharing stages with Jimmy Eat World, Silversun Pickups, Smashing Pumpkins and Florence + the Machine amongst others. Civil Twilight's songs were placed on TV shows such as One Tree Hill, House, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Now solo and focusing on releasing music on his own terms, he's thankful to continue being creative. We want to hear from you!
