Simon Ree is the author of The Tao Of Trading: How To Build Abundant Wealth In Any Market Condition. But why does the world need another book on options trading? There are already hundreds of them out there. Simon thought that all of the ones that he'd read were boring. The sorts of book you'd only read if your boss was making you do it. He thinks that sometimes the authors like to show off how good they are at complex math and difficult concepts. He tried to write a book on options trading that was simple, engaging and fun to read.Blog post available at: https://www.sharesforbeginners.com/blog/taooftradingSpecial landing page for listeners of this podcast: https://www.taooftrading.com/sfbSimon can also be found on Twitter at https://twitter.com/simon_reePlease consider a small donation if you'd like to support my work educating and entertaining new investors in the stock market. [03:22] Simon and Patrick get rollin'! Simon explains when and why his fascination with the stock market began, how he got his professional start once out of university and where that has led him right up to today. His focus has changed somewhat, which better aligns with the contribution he prefers to make. [08:25] Patrick notes, the title of Simon's book isn't a natural fit for the subject matter! Simon shares first how the title came to be, and second his desire to make a book about options trading that is accessible, engaging, and light. Simon's book folds in topics like mindset, risk management and planning which provides more breadth and depth to help people get their business off the ground. [12:03] Emotional control and the right mindset are the final frontier of trading and investing in Simon's view. In a market, that's designed to have people do the wrong thing at the wrong time, it's fundamental when remembering how markets cycle. [14:54] Simon talks about decision making in the stock market, whether this platform is better for intuition or research, plus the framework he provides in his book and why it's so important, especially when emotions threaten to overtake. [17:56] Simon shares his viewpoint on the current state of North American markets, central banks, and the economy of the past few years. Simon also describes his response to the narrative and questions especially when people ask, “what should I do with my money?” by exploring fixed vs. growth mindset. [24:39] At a tumultuous time like the present, it's tempting to pull our cards off the table, but Patrick and Simon discuss the importance of understanding investing and markets (be it real estate or stocks) at just such a time, to capitalize and even profit from the opportunities that do exist. [28:15] Simon shares his definition of a trader and an investor, which is a little different, and explains what sort of commodities he invests in both short and long term. [31:04] Simon addresses one of the five big myths of Wall Street: 10% per annum is a fantastic return. He goes on to explain that where we are in the season of our life, will certainly inform our trading decisions. We need to do the research and show up consistently to see the returns. [35:00] In response to questions about his outlook on the next five years, Simon shares his “headlight theory of capital allocation.” He expands on that to explain what it means in practice. [40:20] Although he considers himself an entrepreneur by default, Simon's real passion is not in business or even running a business. It's teaching. From martial arts to investing, seeing that lightbulb go on for someone when they “get it” is one of the most rewarding experiences for Simon. [43:35] Is it the same thread that binds Simon's interest in martial arts with his interest in the stock market? He describes his start in judo as a kid and his fascination with and attraction to the career path he chose. [46:42] Simon gives his take and on the relatively new space of social investing and online commission-free investing platforms, along with some of the realities and a word of advice. In 2008, Simon Ree lost a "life changing sum of money" in the global financial crisis. While devastating to his financial security, this experience was later utilized to develop a better way of navigating financial markets. Today on The Prosperity Perspective, Simon joins host Liam Leonard to share some of his findings–particularly, the myths that Wall Street tells us. The first myth: a 10% return per annum is a fantastic return. Simon argues that this is not the case, and that depending on where you are in your wealth journey, 10% per year is not likely to be life-changing. Another key tenet of Simon's teachings is the importance of compounding. By compounding on a monthly basis, you can create life-changing returns well within a ten year period. Understand that if you are thinking about engaging in trading, it is best to start small. As a trader, it's important to reduce the emotional impact that losses can have on your mindset and trading decisions. Simon shows how to begin with a sum of money that if lost, wouldn't affect your ability to pay the rent or put food on the table. Hear his breakdown on these topics and more as Simon shares his passion for helping others with his knowledge, and discover how his unique system for trading options that he teaches through his online course, The Tao of Trading, can help you. 3 Key TakeawaysAlways start trading with a sum small enough where if lost, it wouldn't take away the ability to pay for the roof over your head. This will remove unwanted emotional attachment to trading. You should expect to lose on some trades as a business expense. If you win more than you lose and your winners are bigger than your losers, you will come out ahead in the end.It is just as important to assess your trading performance at the right time than it is to make the assessment. Working with probability will take time; assessing your performance after one trade is pointless.ResourcesTrading in the Zone by Mark Douglas et alVisit taooftrading.com/prosperity to access the first chapter of his book and training courses at a heavy discount!About Simon ReeSimon has three decades of experience as an active trader, investor, and financial markets professional. Summary: Why are the next five years going to be different from the last five years on Wall Street? During the last five years, it was easy to make money, but Simon Ree thinks that the next five years (2022-2027) are going to be a lot different. According to Simon, the Fed has two options—which will either result in the stunting of economic growth or a repeat of the 1970s. His advice to people is to maintain a growth mindset, determining how and when to expose money to risk. Use the link below to check out Simon's book on options trading, and tune in to this episode to hear some amazing market advice from Simon. Highlights: -In the previous 15 years, stocks have had a massive tailwind -The balance sheet expansion has gone in reverse -We're experiencing inflation for the first time in four decades -In the next five years, the Fed will either stick to their guns—having dramatic effects on economic growth—or rate hikes will stop and the 1970s conditions will come back to life -Stocks are down, bonds are down, cryptos are down, but cash isn't down -Simon encourages people to approach things with a growth mindset: how and when do I expose my money to risk? -Simon's preferred method is to use technical analysis to pick out the best assets -Monthly compounding is a better strategy for some, achieved through short term trading -There is a shortage of residential housing, and this market is also going to be affected by rates -The residential real estate market will not necessarily crash, but prices could come down 10%-20% -If the fed maintains tightening, this could filter into unemployment -His book on options trading is to help people become successful, independent traders -He wrote the book to engage readers and simplify concepts in options trading -In a bear market, you can't ignore the counter-trend moves -We're in a structural down-trend, but don't fall in love with bear market rallies and think that the worst is over Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Tao of Trading
