I work with a sex coach, not because I have sex problems, but because the coach and I are on a similar wavelength. My coach, Michaelann Gardner, is a deeply compassionate and fascinating person who has studied hypnosis under Melissa Tiers, just like I have. (To give you an idea of what our coaching sessions are like: Michaelann guides me through hypnotic trances where we meditate on death, on the impermanence of life. I emerge from these meditations with a profound appreciation for my earthly existence.) Michaelann has written a powerful book called Sovereign, a poignant memoir that delves into the taboo topics of bodies, relationships, sex, and spirituality. In this candid conversation, Michaelann and I discuss what it means to question culture and religion in the journey towards self-sovereignty. We explore the complexities of reclaiming personal authority and the courage it takes to forge one's own path. I am not going to glorify money, I am not going to glorify hustling, I am not going to glorify pushing myself and moving forward despite obstacles (aka - emotional numbness). Instead, I am going to share with you about my business journey for real. I recently attended a fundraiser course on Emotional First Aid, which was given to those who donated to the Maui relief fund, by Melissa Tiers and Simone Seol. And what they covered was so valuable that I want to share it with you here - plus give you info on how to get the full training yourself if you're into it.. What I cover not only includes tools that can be applied for immediate relief, but also includes what NOT to do, because often - even with good intention - we can cause more harm when we intervene unskillfully. Melissa, who has experience using these tools after 9/11 in New York as well, says that so many therapists went down to help people process through their shock and trauma. And unfortunately, what the research showed was that when we process this way in the first 24-48 hours, we can create a situation in which people are prone to suffer from PTSD. So one guideline is that in the first 24 hours, don't “make” someone debrief or retell the story. This is because it can set in motion a thought loop or plants the memory in a certain way when it's still so fresh (more on that later). Another concept we cover is the Ring Theory. This is the idea that the person who directly experiences the disaster is at the center. Outside of them are these concentric “rings.” The next ring would be someone closest to them. Like an intimate partner or a family member. And the next ring out would be a close friend. Then acquaintances. Then onlookers and strangers and so on. The main mantra with this theory is: Comfort in. Dump out.  In other words, offer comfort and support to the person closer to the center than you,and refrain from looking to people closer to the center than us to help us process our own challenges and struggles. If we need to do that, we can vent or cry or scream to those on the outer rings of the circle from us. So if we're talking to someone in the center or a more inward ring, we can ask ourselves, am I offering help and support? If not, I need to take that somewhere else… outward. Now, people process disasters differently. Some people may hide. Or flee and not deal with it. And others might just go go go and they're energized by the process, doing whatever they can, compartmentalizing to make it through, just to get shit done. Of course, that can't be sustained long-term, right? It's exhausting to be constantly problem solving and fixing.  So we can meet them where they are and find out how they're processing and what is important for them at that moment - and keep an eye out to care for those firing on all cylinders to make sure they can recover.  Let's revisit the when of helping people process a disaster or crisis.  When someone is ready to share (and don't ASK them to share - it's only if they want to talk about it) we can actually effect huge changes by considering our language. For example, we can use a technique of asking them to tell it in past tense to help self-soothe and dislodge trauma from the brain. This has a similar effect to telling it like they're watching a moving, in a movie screen that's “over there,” allowing them to safely dissociate from the event. This helps to create distance between what happened in the past and that person in the present moment. We kind of do this more skillful dissociation naturally when we say things like, “then what happened was… there was a fire over there and we ran.” Compared to “we're running” or “you're hitting me.” Do you see the difference? There are so many other tools I discuss in the full Episode, so be sure to listen to get all that goodness, but I do want to touch on one more thing: Havening. Have you heard about this? It works a bit like EFT and it's simple to do. Basically, when trauma happens, the limbic system turns on and the amygdala gets fired up so that it remembers what happened so that it never happens again. In that moment, this wild chemical cocktail of hormones is released, and it acts like a sticky glue on the receptors for the trauma, which makes it harder to move through and let go. Havening creates different brainwave states and a different chemical cocktail, soothings the system enough that it kind of dissolves the glue and allows the traumatized brain to move on from that overactive and over-vigilant reaction and more easily let go. One great way to do this is to cross your arms over your chest like you're giving yourself a hug. Start with your hands on your shoulders in this position, then slide them down the arms, past the elbows, caressing the hands as they pass one another. Then bring your hands to your face and gently caress downwards. This is a very mammalian caring response - like a mama cat soothing kittens, or a lioness licking her cubs. So we find it soothing too. And it allows the person telling the story to focus on something other than just the story they're telling. Now, before I close this episode out, I want to touch on a couple specific things that I believe we can all do to help support Maui during this time of crisis and not be asshole tourists. There are a lot of people who are wondering when and how  it would be responsible and respectful to return to the island: // Ask questions and do your own research before you go, and see what feels right for you. Be sure to consider the opinions of Native Hawaiians, whose land was illegally taken from them and who now gave many challenges as a result of colonization and extractive tourism. // If, after this, you dedide to go, DON't go to Lahaina // Consider joining a mālama program - mālama means to care for, to give back, and these are vacations where you also give back to the land and the people. // Please be respectful of the Native Hawaiian culture and customs. Be aware of your water and plastic use and how it impacts the environment and people. Be aware the people around you may still be in mourning. Don't flaunt consumerism and wealth in the faces of those who often can't afford to buy land where their own family lived for generations. // Remember that you are a guest on unceded native land. Be humble, kind, caring. And give back, mālama ‘aina. Sending love to you, Maui. In this episode, you will learn:// Ways we can all help one another heal from disaster or crisis if any kind// What NOT to do when helping others process their trauma… and why// When and how to help others process a crisis// How we can continue to support and donate to Maul - and what can be done if you decide to go back when invited  Resources:// You can donate to the Hawai'i Community Foundation that spreads out the funds to different organizations: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/ // Simone Seol and Melissa Tiers free training: This is the link to their Maui Fundraiser, where you can receive a replay of the full training I'm referring to here for free if you give. In this episode, we sift through clean and dirty pain so you can see what pain is worth dealing with and what part is unnecessary. The good news is that the unnecessary pain is created by us so we can stop generating it. Clean pain is constructive and necessary and moves you through an experience. It makes sense and we don't need to fear it. Dirty pain is pain that you superimpose on top of the clean pain and it includes stories of shame and blame about you as a person. We get stuck in this pain and it doesn't move us through the experience like clean pain does. It keeps us stuck and spinning and is of no real use. Under the dirty pain is the clean pain we should process. I outline how to process the clean pain, or in other words, what to do about it. Mentioned in this episode: Simone Seol

My guest on this episode of What the Fundraising is challenging all of us to throw out self-limiting beliefs in favor of playfulness and transparency. Simone Seol, a coach, and host of The Joyful Marketing Podcast, shows us what it can look like to step away from self-doubt, fear of rejection, and perfectionism. “How we get to show up is our decision,” she says. “You get what you think you deserve and you call in who you speak to.”  This is such a powerful message for nonprofits whose goal is to cultivate long-term, trust-based relationships with donors! We can push back on old narratives not based on current realities. And that constant drive fundraisers feel to do good and be seen as good? Simone believes the harder we work to be sainted martyrs the farther we get from authentic, resilient connection with our partners – whether in business, philanthropy, or life.  Simone is an evangelist for truth and vulnerability – which shines through in her work with life coaches and her lively Instagram posts. Her own candor gives us all permission to dig deeper in service of universal stories and nuance. It's through humanity-centered narratives and shared experience, she says, that we transcend “no” to live instead in a powerful place of connection and joy. This inspiring conversation is sure to open you up to new ways of thinking.

Mompreneurs, This week I share three tips to get unstuck and find more motivation in your business. Are you selling yourself on your ability to serve your clients?  Knowing your worth can help you gain confidence in your abilities as a business owner. Are you waiting for the confidence to arrive and then you plan to take action in your business?  You might have the process backwards.  Lisa Bilyeu wrote a book called Radical Confidence that talks about taking action to gain confidence and trusting yourself to figure it all out in your business.Do you think that you are not enough to serve your clients?  What if I told you that your existence is enough?  I suggest Simone Seol's book The Fearless Marketing Bible to learn more on this topic. Once you start taking action in these three areas, you will start to gain confidence and see more traction in your business.  Try it and let me know your results. If you have ever asked yourself the question "I want to believe xyz.... but its just not true" then this episode for you. We will dive into how and why to change your limiting beliefs. There are 6 main things you can do to track your belief level and build evidence for the things you want to believe! Not only that, changing your beliefs can be a self-love practice instead of self-harm. Learn More about The Badass Academy Membership: https://www.thebadassacademy.com/ ..... What beliefs are: why your beliefs are made up and changeable and optional. and how to choose to believe things that are useful to you, even if you are so used to believing an old soggy story believe something that's for the negative or really harmful l, and how to believe something new and practice implementing beliefs if you are easily distractible, if you have ADHD or a brain that just likes to disprove every new belief that you implant in… I got you covered. In the Badass Academy, we talk about all this belief change, and in this episode I'm going to give you the most intensive process I can in a podcast to simarize. Now if you are like the lack of immediate tangible evidence, sometimes it can be frustrating! Especially if you have an ADHD brain. Because we are superworm to find dopamine. Which comes from novelty, newness, oddness and accomplishment. shiny object syndrome when things aren't working as fast as we'd like them to can be an extra challenge with ADHD for that exact reason. So a quick note here on how to keep going with your goals when not seeing the tangible results fast enough … I'll get that in a second. And I also want to offer that there is a common idea that discipline, focus, can get us through anything.. and yes that is true, blAnd if you are someone who does get easily distracted, introducing in these tools here of measuring DIFFERENT results, measuring DIFFERENTly leads to greater ability to stay focused, present and engaged in the process. Beliefs are things that are passed down to us. They are things that are modeled to us and they're things that you know we learned as children from our parents and our mentors. And then throughout life the more we practice and absorb those beliefs, the more we create evidence that they are true. because the brain has a confirmation bias so when you have a belief ingrained in you already you are more prone to see evidence for it. Your brain is hardwired to scan for evidence to support that belief . That's why things feel true even if they don't make any rational sense because the more you practice it the more you find evidence for it and emotion is a glue for a belief. Like sometimes you KNOW logically that you should not be upset at yourself for only posting 5x a week because it is not useful… but if that is a thought habit you've been practicing, the emotional response will still be there. Tip two is to use apps. Apps that help you to review and refresh. Dailio and ThinkUp are my two favorites. Because you can write in those beliefs that you're practicing leaving and you can record it in your own voice you can make different categories. if you want to have a category for all-purpose emotion or.The number three is to write down everything that you want to believe. Don't hold back. This is more of a brainstorm. And put a deadline of when you're going to revisit the plan on the calendar and forget about it.I got that idea from one of my coaches, Simone Seol. and What this does is that it allows your brain to just put it into the motherboard of your system. if you will and marinate for a little bit and when you put a deadline with that signals to your brain that this is important. or we're going to come back to it. so pay attention and then the fourth step is to make a spreadsheet of your beliefs.

Many coaches believe that once they become certified, they will be equipped with the tools to coach anyone on anything. It's a lovely thought, but maybe not so helpful when you're in your tenth session with a client who just stares at you blankly as you try to explain, for the 50th time, how their thoughts are creating their results and why that's a great thing. While there are certainly powerful frameworks out there, the coaching principles we learn aren't one-size-fits-all. One single tool or framework isn't going to work for everybody, and that's ok. In this episode, Kara Loewentheil and Simone Seol will discuss how to bring more openness, nuance, and discernment into your coaching, so you can coach clients of different backgrounds and lived experiences effectively.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://unfuckyourbrain.com/otwb4

Coaching tools didn't descend from the heavens. They were developed by humans whose social context impacted the way they saw the world and their clients, including what they even viewed as a “problem” to be solved in the first place. In other words, those coaching modalities that you know and love? Yeah, those were made up. Before you abandon all meaning and run off into the woods, tune into this episode to learn why understanding this is exactly what will elevate your coaching. A lot of life coaches think they have to dumb down their marketing in order to sell. But doing so not only denies you the opportunity to show up truthfully in your business, it also underestimates the intelligence of your clients and limits the capacity of the industry to engage in nuanced conversations about the complexities of being human.   In this episode, Kara Loewentheil and Simone Seol will discuss the marketing mindset they each used to create multi-million dollar businesses that are every bit as multifaceted as they are. Download the workbook to get the most out of this episode!Watch the full episode on Youtube. Our most-loved guest is BACK! Simone is a life coach, business mentor for coaches, and the host of the Joyful Marketing podcast. She started out as a tarot reading hypnotist who loved the work of helping people but wasn't making much money at all, then figured out how to do the marketing and selling stuff in a way that doesn't feel gross. Simone hosts the Joyful Marketing podcast and works with coaches all over the world to create a revolution in love-based marketing. Between 2019 and 2020 she made almost two million dollars and has coached dozens and dozens of coaches to get them fully booked. How Simone developed her own fullness and sovereignty, which allowed her to show up fully in all her relationships — including her relationship to her audience. (27:33)Years of therapy, getting coached, owning her story, and learning archetypal astrology cracked the code for Simone. This all helped her explore the paradox of who she is without viewing any of it as “wrong.” It helped her to deprogram the shame she felt around her edges of paradox. That work to understand and forgive herself helped her become available to her audiences by a deep level, because it helped her take down walls that kept her from being seen and loved — without focusing on someone else's reaction to her full self and sovereignty. “Doing the inner work first to get to know who you are will help you show up in wholeness, willing to be seen and met and loved by your audience.” - SimoneHow to get to know yourself so that you can see where you may be holding yourself back from fully engaging with your audience and selling your offer in all your wholeness. (30:37)To show up authentically, you first have to know who you are. There are plenty of ways to get to the heart of your unique gifts, goals, and mission — and why they're important to you. Here are questions to journal on to help you understand the thoughts that may be holding you back from fully showing up:What are you afraid people are going to find out about you? Why does your offer matter to you? What is the truth of what you want to offer? What do you want people to think about you? In what ways are you trying to control other people's thoughts about you? Who do you want to spend time with? Who does it light you up to think about helping?“What gets me jazzed is knowing there are people on the other side of my screen who feel deeply seen, understood, and loved by the content I'm putting out there.” - SimoneHow to know when you're truly being vulnerable online. (36:00)Showing up honestly and showing your audience the true you… sometimes mean having a nervous system breakdown! Simone says the test of being vulnerable means throwing up in a bucket after posting because you are taking the emotional risk to be seen.If you're not taking that emotional risk, it means you're in the space of the known and accepted, showing your audience what you think it's safe to show them. Being vulnerable means sharing what feels unsafe, what's forbidden, what makes you worry about being ostracized. It's the quality of how much she trusts her audience with the real Simone, to see and love her when she is taking emotional risks to be known. This is what built Simone's business and cult following. And consistently, she hears that nobody communicates like her, hers are the only emails they open, that what she wrote changed their life. She believes that more business owners aren't getting those messages because they aren't taking the emotional risks to be known.“People stay on the surface because they don't want to take emotional risks. What happens is their content ends up sounding like everybody else's.” - SimoneHow you can create a cult following so people want to read everything you post and buy from you. (46:02)The first four things you need to have: an excellent offer, a clear mission, self-awareness, and emotional vulnerability. A big part of that means asking yourself, How am I available to be known by myself and others? You'll have to listen to the episode to hear Simone dive deeper!“People can smell authenticity from miles away.” - Simone ReferencesListen to Simone's previous appearance on the podcast Follow SimoneInstagram: @simone.grace.seolWebsite: https://www.simonegraceseol.comJoin Joyful MarketingListen to the Joyful Marketing Podcast Let's stay in touchJoin the Business as a Magical Practice private Facebook GroupWatch this episode on YoutubeFollow us on Instagram: @thedirtyalchemyVisit our website: thedirtyalchemy.com
