In this podcast, Lisa explores trauma-informed, holistic approaches to food, eating, and body image, focusing on the psychology of shame, internalized sexism, and somatic experiences in therapy with David Bedrick. Together they discuss the importance of compassionate inquiry, critique mainstream treatment methods, and personal and professional journeys. Their conversation highlights the integration of emotional and physical healing, the role of self-compassion, and the value of unshaming in supporting individuals with disordered eating. Topics Include:Body ImageTrauma Informed Care Disordered EatingCoping Mechanisms[:35] Lisa introduces David, expressing admiration for his work. David shares his professional background of over 30 years as a psychologist, 10 years as an attorney, author of five books including ‘The Unshaming Way', and his research on body shame. David discusses his upbringing in a violent home, the impact of trauma and denial, and how these experiences led to his interest in trauma, shame, and psychology.[10:22] David discusses with Lisa the differences in body image issues between men and women, highlighting the impact of sexism and internalized negative voices, especially for women. David shares findings from his research that resistance to dieting programs can be an act of self-love, rather than a lack of discipline. David explains how the ‘unshaming way' reframes eating behaviors as intelligent responses to unmet needs rather than problems to be fixed. David describes how a client, after working on asserting her needs in life, saw a reduction in compulsive eating. [14:00] David presents a case where a woman's craving for hamburgers was linked to her unmet need for autonomy and self-expression. By exploring her desires in a non-shaming way, she recognized that eating hamburgers was the only area where she prioritized her own needs, leading to broader personal growth. [21:00] David discusses three types of relationships: with oneself, with others, and with the world. He explains how eating behaviors can reflect unmet needs or safety concerns in these relationships, and how trauma or abuse can influence eating patterns as a means of coping or self-protection. David emphasizes that feelings of safety are foundational in addressing eating behaviors. [39:30] Lisa and David explore the importance of addressing both emotional and physical aspects when working with individuals who are severely underweight or overweight, rather than adopting a black-and-white approach. Lisa and David engage in discussion on the value of helping individuals connect with the literal, somatic experience of their bodies and suffering, rather than focusing on self-judgment or shaming.[46:32] Lisa and David examine dissociation as a survival mechanism in trauma, and strategies for gently helping individuals reconnect with their bodies and experiences. Lisa and David talk about the transformative impact of being met with love, respect, compassion, and grace, both internally and from a supportive community.[1:05:26] Lisa and David wrap up the episode by discussing how listeners can find him. David shares that he can be found on Instagram and his website, has written about 80 essays for Psychology Today, and is working on his fifth book. His fourth book, ‘The Unshaming Way,' is being translated into seven languages. He offers a 10-month facilitator course and shorter, less expensive courses on trauma and healing.*The views of podcast guests do not necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of Lisa Schlosberg or Out of the Cave, LLC.Purchase the OOTC book of 50 Journal PromptsLeave Questions and Feedback for Lisa via OOTC Pod Feedback Form Email Lisa: lisa@lisaschlosberg.comOut of the Cave Merch - For 10% off use code SCHLOS10Lisa's SocialsInstagram Facebook YouTubeReclaiming Peace With Food Retreat at the Omega Institute - September 7-12, 2025

What if shame isn't a flaw, but a signal that something essential in you has been pushed away? In this week's episode, Aimee sits with David Bedrick, therapist, author of The Unshaming Way, and a passionate advocate for psychological truth-telling. They explore how shame disconnects us from our experience, distorts our emotions, and shapes our identities from the inside out. Through somatic awareness, storytelling, and radical compassion, David invites us into the process of unshaming—not fixing ourselves, but fully witnessing and embracing the parts we've exiled.David takes us through:- Why shame cuts us off from empathy, truth, and genuine accountability- How trauma and unacknowledged pain become embedded in the body- The power of somatic language to access “unshamed experience”- What it means to witness, rather than fix, someone in pain- Why reclaiming emotion, desire, and personal narrative is essential to healing- How unshaming returns us to wholeness and expands our capacity to love, feel, and actAnd so much more!David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. PW, is a teacher, counselor, and attorney. He grew up in a family marked by violence. While his father's brutality was physical and verbal, his mother's denial and gaslighting had its own covert power. This formative context introduced David early to the etiology of shame and instilled an urge to unshame.Professionally, he was on the faculty for the University of Phoenix and the Process Work Institute in the U.S. and Poland, and is the founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies, where he trains therapists, coaches, and healers and offers workshops for individuals to further their own personal development.David writes for Psychology Today and is the author of three books: Talking Back to Dr. Phil: Alternatives to Mainstream Psychology and Revisioning Activism: Bringing Depth, Dialogue, and Diversity to Individual and Social Change. There's a powerful psychological state that can paralyze us, interfere with effective relationships, block our empathy, and cause us to inflict harm. It's called shame.Today, David Bedrick shares what shame is, how it's created, and its connection to trauma. Some say shame keeps us humble, but David shares why we don't need shame because it's not the same as embarrassment or regret. We unpack why shame is not a feeling but a psychological state that can leave you numb - and how you can instead create a space of safety and security within yourself. David shares how we can snap out of a shame spiral in the moment and also gives insights as to why some people may feel a need to shame others. David makes us think about our need to “solve,” or pathologize as he puts it, shame, anger, depression, and the like rather than process root causes to make meaning. He offers an intriguing thought experiment to try to break yourself of this tendency! Lastly, we touch on how to unashame conflict and dialogue through conflict in a more productive way. To access the episode transcript, please search for the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.comKey Takeaways:Shame is different from embarrassment or humiliation. Shame is a psychological state that may have feelings associated with it. Negative feelings are not bad - they can even be helpful for understanding our behavior and lead us to making an action toward repair. Say the criticisms in your head aloud from the perspective of the negatives - it gives you a chance to respond and advocate for yourself. "If shame enters my system, the only thing I care about is removing the bad experience I have in myself. I don't care about you. I care about being low. In the fully shame psyche, you don't exist as a person that matters to me at all." — David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. Teacher, author, and psychological activist David Bedrick is here to talk about breaking free from shame to live a life of freedom, health and vitality, as he elaborates in his beautiful book "The Unshaming Way."I know I know, we all know about shame these days, but the way David talks about this topic is truly deep, gentle and illuminating. I have learned so much from his book, and keep going back to this simple concept "Shame robs us of an inner lover and protector," and of course, the opposite of this is to internalize love and protection in our system. We both share our insights and stories of working with shame from our childhoods, more illuminating and effective than any stats or statements I find. David is a lovely human and this was such an essential conversation in our journey back home to ourselves. If you want to get involved with his work and get your hands on his incredible book which I highly recommend: https://www.davidbedrick.com/Takeaways*Shame obstructs our deeper experiences and self-awareness.*The greatest injury of shame is making ourselves invisible.*People pleasing is often a trauma response, not a personality trait.*Parents' unfulfilled lives can shape their children's paths.*Healing involves reclaiming our authentic selves and stories.*Witnessing and integrating our experiences is crucial for healing.*The quality of relationships is key to emotional health.*Vulnerability in leadership fosters genuine connections.*There is inherent goodness beneath our coping mechanisms.*Self-accompaniment and compassion are vital for personal growth.

On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I had the honor and delight of speaking with one of my teachers and mentors, David Bedrick!David is a teacher, counselor, attorney, and the founder of The Sante Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies. He's also the author of four books and on this episode, we discuss his latest: THE UNSHAMING WAY - A Compassionate Guide to Dismantling Shame. This fantastic book addresses how to heal from shame, unlearn self-blame, and reclaim your story. As someone who has been deeply impacted by his work on shame and the unshaming process, I was super excited to dive into a rich conversation about vulnerability, trauma, and the power of authentic expression. We also explored the profound impact of violence, childhood trauma, and how the internalization of shame can shape our adult experiences. Perhaps most importantly, David shared his unique approach to "unshaming," which involves genuine curiosity and a deep respect for each person's sacred story. Rather than trying to fix or change someone, he invites them to fully inhabit and express their authentic selves - a process that often unlocks hidden gifts and strengths. One of the surprising key moments for me was when David and I both reflected on how we were once labeled as "shy" kids, when in reality, we were simply responding to fear and a lack of safety!I've benefited immensely from this work, and now I'm so happy to get to share David and these insights with you.I'd love to hear your favorite and most impactful takeaways, too!KEY POINTS:• The power of vulnerability and transparency in building trust and safety• How childhood trauma can lead to internalized shame and self-criticism• Reframing "shyness" as a response to fear - rather than a personality trait• David Bedrick's definition of shame as a viewpoint, not just a feeling• The transformative potential of authentic expression and the "unshaming" process• The exacerbating role of systemic oppression in fueling internalized shame• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program DAVID'S BIO: David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. PW, is a teacher, counselor, and attorney. He grew up in a family marked by violence. While his father's brutality was physical and verbal, his mother's denial and gaslighting had its own covert power. This formative context introduced David early to the etiology of shame and instilled an urge to unshame.Professionally, he was on the faculty for the University of Phoenix and the Process Work Institute in the U.S. and Poland and is the founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies where he trains therapists, coaches and healers and offers workshops for individuals to further their own personal development.David writes for Psychology Today and is the author of four books: Talking Back to Dr. Phil: Alternatives to Mainstream Psychology and Revisioning Activism: Bringing Depth, Dialogue, and Diversity to Individual and Social Change, and You Can't Judge a Body by Its Cover: 17 Women's Stories of Hunger, Body Shame and Redemption. His new fourth book, The Unshaming Way, was published by North Atlantic books in November 2024.Links:Order The Unshaming Way: https://a.co/d/dYTwNa7Website: https://www.davidbedrick.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/david.bedrick/Facebook:

I've been feeling a lot of anxiety lately. Our wilderness kid is doing really well, so you'd think, after all the heartache, pain, and anxiety of that journey, things would finally feel calm. But life has a way of throwing curveballs, doesn't it?But honestly, I've been judging my anxiety hard. What's your problem? Why can't you handle this? You used to be good at this! You're a mess. It's exhausting, and the more I try to push these thoughts away, the louder they get.But then a good reminder brought me back on the path of unshaming and it started to shift my perspective. I know many of you are navigating hard times too. The mistakes we make, the thoughts that feel overwhelming, they need unshaming. They need understanding. That's where healing starts. And as I work through this, I'm learning to love myself through the experience. If you're in a season of anxiety or shame, I want you to know I'm here for you. Together, we can unlearn the judgment and begin to embrace understanding. In this episode on unshaming anxiety, I reflect on:My recent struggles with anxiety and what they've taught me;How anxiety often masks deeper emotions, like sadness or fear; The transformative power of understanding and accepting anxiety;Unshaming past actions to regain control and self-compassion.Please know, you are not alone.Other episodes on this topic: 61. In this third episode of our short non-grad series of four, David and Drew dive deep into a conversation about the true nature of shame and how to heal it through what David calls Unshaming. While David is not a graduate of the Process, his work is very closely aligned with the work of the Process. As David says, "Shame is an internalized vision of oneself. It creates feelings, but they are not feelings." According to David, to heal shame, someone must truly witness us. In telling our story of what happened, we need to be heard, seen, and understood. We need to be humanized, not stigmatized or pathologized. He says we must be "witnessed for being a human being who's been through an experience. That's unshaming. That's humanizing." We hope you enjoy this profound conversation on the nature of healing shame with David and Drew. **This episode mentions physical and sexual violence and may not be suitable for all listeners. Please use your discretion. More about David Bedrick: David Bedrick, JD, Dipl. PW grew up in a family marked by violence. While his father's brutality was physical and verbal, his mother's denial and gaslighting had its own covert power. This formative context introduced David early to the etiology of shame and instilled an urge to unshame. Professionally, he was on the faculty for the University of Phoenix and the Process Work Institute in the U.S. and Poland and is the founder of the Santa Fe Institute for Shame-based Studies where he trains therapists, coaches, and healers and offers workshops for individuals to further their own personal development. David writes for Psychology Today. He's the author of Talking Back to Dr. Phil: Alternatives to Mainstream Psychology and Revisioning Activism: Bringing Depth, Dialogue, and Diversity to Individual and Social Change. His new book is You Can't Judge a Body by Its Cover: 17 Women's Stories of Hunger, Body Shame, and Redemption. I forgot to mention in the intro that we had had an internet glitch right at the beginning, but I didn't edit it out because it's cute and human. Jeff Hinshaw, the founder of “Cosmic Cousins,” has made several contributions to the world of astrology. A vocal advocate for promoting inclusivity and diversity in the astrology community, he uses his platform to highlight the work of other LGBTQ+ individuals from diverse backgrounds. In addition, through his podcast, Substack, newsletter, and social media, he shares his knowledge of astrology, making it accessible to a wider audience. At the intersection of astrology and spirituality, Hinshaw explores the ways in which astrology can be used as a tool for spiritual growth and connections between astrology and practices such as meditation, yoga, and tarot. I HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT INSIDE! I can't wait to share. The title of this episode came through as I was sharing how it's my feeling that underneath the shame we carry is grief. The grief of the younger self that the world didn't appear to be a place to hold the generosity of nuance, of complexity, of paradox. A place of compassionate listening and curiosity. Grief that we have to be either good or bad. Grief that can't just be our whole selves. It's my hypothesis that it was easier to submit to the logic of the shame police than it was to hold the grief about the world. In this episode, I give updates on my passion project to bring the medicine magic of unshaming to the astrological community. Upcoming Live Events: If you're in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, please join me Saturday, Aug 3, at one or both of the following workshops: Unshaming the Signs at The Future - one of my most favorite metaphysical shops in the U.S.! She shows us how to reign in people pleasing and perfectionism and overcome the beliefs we have that hold us back.We see a lot of people pleasing and perfectionism in the PlanSimple community, so we started there. Kamini says that overcoming people pleasing starts with getting clear about your needs and values. When you've reconnected with that you can begin to realign your actions and step out of the people pleasing role. Then pay attention to your body. It may take a little time to learn your own cues, but notice what happens when you start people pleasing. Practice self-talk to see what's happening and what you really want. The first step to break out of people pleasing is to recognize your own needs and values. Take some time to think about what you actually need, believe and value yourself. This can be an ongoing process. You can start by asking yourself questions like: What's going on here? Is this something you actually want to do? Is this really what you agree with?
