Sip along with us this week as we sit down and discuss the movie, a spiritual psychology segment, and get *very* sidetracked by our cocktail pairing (recipe below). Have you ever wondered what it's like behind the curtain of a Blotto Beatles recording session? This intro peels it all back for a look into how the sausage is made. We really get down to business after that as we....take an episode we recorded for Ranking the Beatles and put it up on our feed. With that, we have our usual fun as we are joined by one of our original pod pals in Jonathan Pretus of Ranking the Beatles to discuss if Tommy's impression is more Leno or Tyson, Ringo's feet, the Billy Corgan and Bill Burr brotherhood, Scotty's caricatures, the Blottos replacing Billy Joel in his MSG residency, how the Blottos sleep, lots about Crocs, lots about Garbage Pail Kids, and the Larry Williams original, Slow Down.We say it several times in the episode, but if you're headed to the Fest for Beatles Fans in New Jersey during the weekend of March 28, please make sure to come up and say hi and don't forget to swing by and see our live podcast episode with Jonathan. As always, you can find Team Blotto Beatles on Instagram (@blottobeatles) and Twitter / X (@blottobeatles), by emailing us (blottobeatles@gmail.com), or on the web (blottobeatles.com). We want to hear from you! Please also take the time to rate and review us on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. We have a shop! Grab some merch. You can always drunk dial us at 1.857.233.9793 to share your thoughts, feedback, confessions, and concerns to be featured in an upcoming episode. Enjoying the show? In the midst of a senior year holiday gathering, an evening at a friend's place turned into a debacle fueled by Sloe Gin—a deceptively delightful drink that swiftly led to an uncontrollable situation. The night before a significant day—his mother's birthday—the plan was to finish holiday shopping, but the allure of Sloe Gin took precedence. The aftermath? A catastrophic upchuck incident, leaving a mess and a memorable, albeit regrettable, story.
It's the 12th episode of the Cob Pod and this week we find ourselves in Mick's "Shoffice" (Shed/Office). The gang are all huddled around their mics and a bottle of Sloe Gin as if they were warming their hands around a campfire. All the Mo's are still there with some counting down the days to remove said Mo. This week we have a couple of guests on the show, some real Cobham Club boys. The immortal Richie Marshall joins in to talk about his career and reflect on the club over the last twenty-something years. Our other clubman and age-defying backrower is Andy Taylor who joins us from his "Shoffice" built by, yes you guessed it, Richie Marshall. As usual, we have our team hosted by Mick and his panel of rugby statisticians Pete, Blissy, and Duncan. DAD JOKE CONTEST! Did you know that if you sneeze and fart at the same time, your body takes a screenshot? It's true. Also, if that joke offends you, then you should probably just go ahead and skip this episode (seriously). But if not, and you need a few good laughs, then you're in for a treat. Like a bad rash, Colt McCutcheon and Doug Harvey return once again on the 3 Questions, 3 Drinks podcast, only this time they're armed with curdled drinks, warm beer and a variety of Dad Jokes – some that are awful, some questionable, and others so bad they're really, really good. And if that's not enough, Chris tells an original joke that is so stupendously awful it leaves the entire studio speechless.Drinks in this Episode:WHITE RUSSIAN >> 2 oz Vodka, 1 oz Kahlúa, 1 splash heavy cream. Add the vodka and Kahlúa to a rocks glass filled with ice. Top with the heavy cream and stir. Try to avoid leaving it to curdle in the hot sun of an overheated podcasting studio before consuming.SLOW COMFORTABLE SCREW UP AGAINST THE WALL >> 1 oz Vodka, 1 oz Sloe Gin, 1/2 oz Southern Comfort, 1/2 oz Galliano, Orange juice. Fill a tall glass half full with ice. Add the vodka, sloe gin, and southern comfort. Add enough orange juice to almost fill the glass then stir gently. Pour the Galliano over the back of a spoon into the glass so it floats on the top (this is the "wall"). Do not stir. Serve immediately, and then apologize to your mother for the R-rated name of this cocktail.THE BEER OF DADS EVERYWHERE >> Miller High Life, aka the Champagne of Beers. Was ist wirklich passiert? Um das zu klären gehen wir nach Harvard, zurück in die 60er Jahre. Wir blicken auf das Leben der Studentin Jane Britton, einer klugen, rebellischen Archäologie-Studentin. War der Professor wirklich der Täter? Oder was steckt hinter diesem Verbrechen? Timo Marshall from Spirit Works Distillery joins Harry Duke on Brew Ha Ha today in the KSRO studios. Spirit Works Distillery is coming into its tenth year. Based in the Barlow, they are a small family run operation, “grain to glass.” They have a Spirit Club too. They are perhaps best known for their Sloe Gin and their Bourbon has won several awards recently, including a "Best Of" from the North Bay Bohemian. In 2020 they won Distillery of the Year, which was “hugely flattering” but there was no celebration due to the pandemic. The award focusses on how the distillery operates and their general philosophy as well as quality of product. They received by a Zoom conference. For him and his wife Ashby, the head distiller, they felt like it was a real career milestone. Timo was born in Britian and became interested in spirits early on. His grandmother taught him how to make sloe gin. He was fascinated by having to forage for Sloe berries and by learning the local traditions. He is proud to be making Sloe gin in the old traditional way. The Sloe berry grows on the blackthorn bush that was planted as a hedgerow in England for centuries because it's thorny and protects the fields. In the late Autumn it produced very tart sour berries. Slider is Cider with Sloe berries. The British nation owes a debt to whoever first put Sloe berries into gin. Their Sloe Gin is far less sugary than the English one. They wanted to create one that is “...very fruit forward, with sour tart plummy flavors, a cranberry, citrussy flavor, very special.” In the UK some people drink it neat after dinner, and in the US it is a cocktail ingredient, anywhere its flavor is desired, such as in a Manhattan. People can add a dash to some sparkling wine to make a kind of Sloe Royale. It's also nice with ice. The tasting room open Wednesday through Sunday in the Barlow in Sebastopol. Their tasting room staff is friendly and a visit is an educational experience. There is a window into the production space, for all to see. The still is a large copper structure that is beautiful to see. Part of making Sloe Gin is making regular gin, which in turn requires pure spirits so they do it all. Timo calls it a “grain to glass” facility. They bring in whole grain, wheat from the Sacramento area, which they mill and mash then distill. They also make a Bourbon whiskey, called Four-Grain Straight Bourbon Whiskey. It is a true California made Bourbon. That has to be at least 51% corn, then wheat and rye and topped off with some malted barley. Then it is stored in American oak barrels. American White Oak is what gives the vanillas and butterscotch flavors to American whiskey. They use 53-gallon barrels, a normal standard size. Herlinda Heras calls in from Italy, where it is 2:20 AM, and she is there to be a judge in the Italian national beer competition called Birra dell'Anno (“Beer of the Year”). Herlinda was in Italy two years ago just before the pandemic. She is visiting friends here and there, then she will go to Rimini, on the coast near Bologna, for the beer convention. She will be back soon with beers to share.

Rich & Johnny return in 2021 with a lengthy chat with Michigan poster/flyer historian legend Jack Bodnar. Intense insight to a heavy scene! Here are some post scripts from the talk via Jack himself: Jack Bodnar talks more about The Brewery days in LansingBy Jack Bodnar, January 18, 2021 I don’t know about you but when talking about the past, especially personal events that happened nearly 50 years ago, I often walk away wishing I had said this or that instead, and that I had been clearer. In my conversation with Rich and Johnny, I think I got most of it right but what follows are additional insights that might clarify a few things. Terry O’Connor was the (brilliant and whimsical) Brewery graphic artist…he died of cancer in the Florida Keys a few years back. Even though he spent his career as a graphics artist, mostly for Michigan State University, his three-year Brewery and Brewery-related output (1972-1975), which came at the end of the Classic Rock Art era (1965-1976), easily puts him in the Top Four pantheon of Michigan superstar rock artists, joining Gary Grimshaw, Carl Lundgren, and Ozone (Chris Frayne, Commander Cody’s brother). O’Connor created 30-35 Brewery concert posters. No one knows for sure how many, not even Terry when he was still alive. Many of the posters were printed in ridiculously small print runs of 50-100, which is why most people at the time and post-1975 have never seen them. This was compounded by the fact that shortly after The Brewery changed concepts to the Silver Dollar bar in April 1975, Terry’s basement, where he stored his Brewery original art and “reference” posters, was flooded and all was lost. A true tragedy. Terry never realized how great his Brewery art was. It was just a blip on his radar, something he did for a short time in his youth. Even though his output was low compared to the likes of Grimshaw and Lundgren, Terry’s consistent, eye-popping creativity and use of vibrant color would rank him high on the national rock art scene if people could see his work. Hopefully, this will happen eventually, thanks to the twenty-some-odd O’Connor posters that are part of my collection at Michigan State University. I referred to Sloe Gin and Blue Motorcycle (the latter sometimes called Blue Hawaiian) drinks at The Brewery. The latter was basically a blue Long Island Iced Tea…blue curacao, gin, vodka, and rum. Many of the female patrons ordered them and they were deadly. On Tequila Nights, The Brewery sold a lot of Tequila Sunrises, yet another powerful drink that was ordered predominantly by the ladies. The guys tended to order straight tequila shots, as well as Tequila Sunrises on Tequila Nights. In our conversation, we kept referring to “Goose Lake.” Hopefully, most people know we were referring to the 1970 Goose Lake International Music Festival (7-9 August) in Grass Lake, MI, which attracted more than 200,000 mostly-stoned fans. It is recognized as the last great rock music festival of the Sixties Rock era. During our conversation, I offered a couple of unfortunate exaggerations when referring to multiple items in my collection. For the sake of hyperbole, I said I might have 5,000 Goose Lake Festival poker chips, which were the festival entry tickets. This is not true, though my collection does have close to a thousand of them, which is still a lot given they don’t turn up very often. Also, when referring to multiples, I said I had 30-40 copies of some underground newspapers (like the seminal and tough-to-find Warren-Forest Suns), which is true, but many of my underground issues number only in single digits. For instance, my collection has only one of Creem #5 (only a handful exist for some reason), plus the original cover art by Detroit artist Matthew (Matthew Radofsky). Rich referred to a Brewery Seger poster at East Lansing’s The Curious Bookshop, something he had mentioned to me when he interviewed me for a Lansing City Pulse article on the Brewery a few years back. However, I think at the time Rich said it was a Brewery Iggy/Stooges poster. I assumed Rich were homing in on it, so I butted out, which is what I normally do/did when somebody mentions something to me and they are still “working on it.” I wonder what became of that poster, Rich? Rich also told me about some other Brewery posters that were on display for a short while at East Lansing’s Flat, Black & Circular record store. Because Rich said he was not in pursuit of these posters, I was able to acquire seven Brewery posters, six of them I did not have. Two of the posters were badly wrinkled from a poor mounting job, so I sent them to a reputable poster restoration house in Brooklyn, NY. Of course, shortly after receiving them, the restorer went belly-up and it took me a year of pleading to get them back. The posters were indeed restored (nicely) when returned, thankfully. And yes, in hindsight, The Brewery did do a lot of very effective print advertising, especially in The State News, Michigan State University’s campus newspaper. Among other ad placements, Brewery co-owner Paul Kacer and Terry O’Connor somehow came up with the brainy idea of running vertical 2”-wide one column ads (white Brewery-logo typeface on distinctive black background) that ran the entire margin of a page. These ads absolutely popped off the newsprint. Also, in our conversation, I said that word-of-mouth was the most effective form of advertising for the Brewery once it hit full steam but Kacer never relented on covering all his bases through print and radio. I just wish he had let O’Connor create more posters with bigger press runs. Paul didn’t realize how significant these posters were and that it would have cost only a fraction more to print 200-500 posters instead of a paltry 50-100. No one is brilliant across-the-board. After their three-year Brewery stint, two of the three Brewery owners, Paul Kacer and Bruce Wahlin returned to their “straight” restaurant business roots for the rest of their careers, where they were quite successful (again). Pre-Brewery, they had been partners in the very profitable Grand River IHOP and not-so-profitable Stables bar/restaurant operations across the street. Then post-Brewery, they created the Pantree breakfast-centric restaurant in the old East Lansing post office building on Abbot (now Dublin Square Irish Pub) and at a second location in Ann Arbor on Liberty Street, before finally going their separate ways out-of-state. The third Brewery partner was Rick Becker, who bought out Kacer and Wahlin in April 1975 and repurposed The Brewery as the Silver Dollar bar, which ran for 20 years. The building was demolished by 2000, replaced by a bagel store. Dave DiMartino and I split The State News concert review scene in 1973-74. Dave would go on to be editor of CREEM magazine and has been a legendary music writer for decades. I also made writing my career after I left East Lansing but not in the entertainment field. I gravitated to public relations, advertising, and training instead. It was daunting to cover all the great acts that came through East Lansing on a weekly basis while I was at MSU. DiMartino covered most of the big venue rock gigs and did the record reviews, while I covered most of the blues, jazz, and folk acts, as well as the exploding bar scene. The Brewery alone usually brought in one to two name bands a week. I wound up having an “On Tap” column at The State News and moonlighted at the Lansing State Journal, supplying local entertainment coverage. Sonny Terry (harp) & Brownie McGhee were the two bluesmen I couldn’t remember when talking about East Lansing’s Alley Eye bar.

This week's episode features the creator and writer of Final Destination, Jeffrey Reddick. He was wonderful to chat with and I can't wait to see what he continues to release in the future on the horror genre. He is just a good 'ol southern boy from Kentucky and has stayed that way while in Hollywood. We chatted about everything from Law and Order : SVU to A Nightmare on Elm Street and even projects he is working on, including some with Netflix. Red Death Cocktail (from mixthatdrink.com): Ingredients 1 ounce of Southern Comfort 1 ounce of Vodka 1/2 ounce of Sloe Gin 1/2 ounce of Tripe Sec 1/2 ounce of Blackberry Brandy 2 ounces of Orange Juice 1 ounce of Pineapple Juice Instructions Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Pour in all ingredients and shake until chilled. Fill a highball glass with ice. Strain the mixture into it. The Official Drinking Game for Every Horror/Slasher Film (from brobible.com): One Drink Category: Take 1 drink… Every time there’s a cut scene with a loud noise that’s meant to scare you, and nothing actually happens. Every time the phone rings. Every time you notice how outdated the technology is in the movie. Every time you see the killer’s murder weapon. Every time someone takes a drink or someone references getting drunk. Every time the “slut” does or says something slutty. Every time someone drops the F bomb. Every time you see a news reporter. Three Drink Category: Take 3 drinks… Every time someone trips for no apparent reason when running away. Every time someone grabs a butcher knife. (Killer doesn’t count) Every time a phone doesn’t work. (This is why newer horror movies take place in remote areas. This way they can explain the cell phone problem with no cell phone reception.) Every time a car breaks down, crashes, or doesn’t start. Every time there’s shoddy police work. (This includes security guards) Every time someone warns a character of danger way ahead of time but they don’t listen. Five Drink Category: Take 5 drinks… If there’s a death before the opening credits. Bonus drink for each additional death. Any time the main characters get into a Jeep or SUV. Every time there’s a shower scene. If you see a nipple. Take 1 drink for each additional nipple. When someone you thought was dead shows up alive later in the movie. When someone is blanketed on a stretcher. Scale of 1 to 10 drinks: Rate how good a death is. This one is up to you or the group. Here’s a baseline to get you started. One drink is a cut scene to blood hitting the wall, and 10 drinks is the killer cutting off a guy’s head while he’s taking a piss, causing him to piss into his own mouth. So enjoy this drinking game to your favorite slasher horror movies. This way the smooth drinks will really take the edge off. As always, drink responsibly. I wanted to show my support so I bought two miniatures. I really like this idea because it gives you a chance to properly review the gin. I was also interested to see if I could taste the elongation of flavour to the poppy seeds. The nose of the gin has very delicate aroma of the orange blossom The tasting profile starts dry followed by a sweet elongated taste with delicate citrus notes, culminating in heat from the alcohol before going dry at the back end of the profile. The taste neat is very delicate and surprisingly sweet. It is even more pleasant when an ice cube was added. As usual I tested with Mediterranean tonic and this is where this gin comes into it's own. It is a really pleasant sweet, delicately citrus based G&T and one of those bottles that you can always count on to give to friends or family or have a cheeky G&T yourself. I would definitely serve with pink grapefruit and plenty of ice as I think this would take the flavour profile to a whole new level. It is a bit like adding blueberries to Brockmans This gin is smooth enough for a dry martini but would not work in my opinion I could however see this in an Expresso Martini or a Pornstar Martini and I really like the clover club or bramble serves on the website. If you are looking for a staple gin for G&T with potential for cocktails then this is the gin for you. It is definitely being added to my long list of gin wants. Are you Up for a Christmas Day Challenge ?You also have two weeks to work out what your Christmas cocktail is going to be There have been some great ones on Instagram I have been looking round for inspiration to see what you could go for Why should I have a Christmas cocktail ? So if you did have a chance to review the podcast I would be most grateful Weekly Gin RecommendationWeekly Gin Recommendation - Lind & Lime Gin from the Leith Distillery I was introduced to this gin by Brit from The Botanical Trading Company. It was my November box. For some reason whenever I get citrus gin I think it is going to be too full or sugar or it will be so citrus that the juniper will just get lost. I should not really think like this the l'Orange gin from The Edge Gin or Twist of Lime from Stockport gin. So I have to say initially I was a tad disappointed when I received this. I had an initial taste and can say that this pre-conception was misguided because it was absolutely lovely. As you will see this is very versatile gin with the martini's I will be putting out this week. The nose of the gin is a subtle lime The flavour profile is really interesting. It starts with a brief moment where there is no apparent taste, then the lime lingers. The lime is not sweet and it is not tart it is just delightful. The flavour profile continues with a dry taste and then here is a brief heat from alcohol. This gin is so versatile. I would be quite happy to have this as a sipping gin either with or without ice I added some Mediterranean tonic and the G&T is sensational. It lifts the lime. I could drink this all day. It would make a great summers day drink. This gin is so smooth that I would love to have this in a dry martini. It is also so versatile and can be put into cocktails. I have tried in a Tom Collins, Breakfast Martini and a Dry Martini of Sorts This is a sensational gin and one which has a proud place on my gin shelf. I heartfelt thank you to the Botanical Trading company and a slight worry on my behalf that there will not be a lot left because I am enjoying it too much Charlie and Mike from Charles & Mike Distillers How did you start on

So if you did have a chance to review the podcast I would be most grateful Weekly Gin RecommendationWeekly Gin Recommendation - Lava Spirits Coffee Gin I take one sip and I am in Florence in Tuscany. I have just come across the bridge as the sun is setting and settled down in a nice cafe in the city. There is lots of hustle and bustle but I am I am having this gin and savouring a moment. The nose of this gin is initially a London Dry but very soon the aroma turns to coffee. The coffee is just so naturally sweet and I have not tasted coffee flavour like this since I last visited Small Batch in Worthing https://www.instagram.com/sbcrworthing/ (@sbcrworthing). The flavour profile starts with a smooth coffee taste which then goes to a sweeter coffee flavour. This is followed by juniper on your palette and then finally a resurgence of coffee. I cannot believe how two strong flavours like juniper and coffee can be fused together and that this only took 18 months. The fusion of these two flavours is magnificent and quite simply is a feat of taste engineering. I paired this with a Mediterranean tonic to test it as a long serve. Given the flavour profile I should have probably broken with testing protocol and gone with one of Coca Cola's dark spirit mixers as Laura suggested. The possibilities of this drink really lie with mixologists in my opinion. Obvious choices are an espresso martini but I think this would be a fantastic addition to most cocktails given the unique flavour profile. I am not surprised this gin has already one an award and given it's uniqueness I think it maybe destined for many more. Congratulation Laura for sticking to your artisan ways, listening to your friends and for creating Lava Spirits.
Deb I only contacted you after much toing and froing as I am a wild camper and quite well known in some circles, they didn't call it ‘wild’ camping back when I started as a boy, it was just a night off the farm in those days, my Family ran a beef and dairy farm and it was long hours for not much pay. We always had food and plenty to barter with but ready cash was always in short supply. In the countryside people hunt their food still and back then it was more prevalent, pigeon, duck, rabbit and hare were a welcome catch. Now it's frowned upon by some, but I was brought up alongside nature and one day I will return to it. It's all just a circle. I would go off with my Brothers or my Friends from around the area, we would head up on the Peaks and Down around the Reservoir where there was always animal sign and the stream was well stocked so we never went hungry. Some of the lads tailed off and stopped coming altogether, some I still see for the odd pint now and then, but sleeping wild never left me, it's my one place I feel like ‘me’ It frees me and I often use it as food for the soulI'm known as a primitive tool maker and I usually show people how to camp in a primitive way without the use of modern tools, but sometimes even I like a few of home comforts. In 2014 I was suffering with a chest infection and had been cooped up at home for weeks. It was Autumn but the weather was warm enough to get in one more camp before Winter and I could test and clean out my camping supplies and get that long awaited job done and pack away my light gear till the warmer months next year, the fresh air would do my chest the world of good. So I set off for one of my more sedentary spots, it's set within an orchard not too far from the farm and with easy parking and access from the road. The farmer is a decent guy and always has a wander over and a chin wag when I pop in. We went to school together and as most family’s here will attest we all know each other by one relative or another. I'm not going to tell you the area as I don't want it spoiled in any way and after what happened I'm not too sure people should be heading that way either. The Orchard was full of different kinds of Apples, Hazel and Walnuts. I set up my gear and with a cold this bad I had a full kit, sleeping back, tarp and tent. I got the fire going and a brew on and the farmer wandered over for a chat. He asked me if I had seen any strange cars or vehicles on my way in. It was around 7am and I had arrived about 6.15 am and I told him “No” I had not passed any people or vehicles on the way in. He went on to explain that for a few weeks now a number of chickens, eggs and feed had been taken and he thought it was some wandering tramp or one of the farm hands who were brought in by picking teams who had felt the need to steal from him, if not he would suggest a dog or cat of some kind but his barley and wheat bins had been raided which would be very hard on your average dog or cat, and with so many protein sources available why would they take feed? I told him I would be there for about 30 hrs or so as I had a job to do on the following Wednesday, so I would keep an eye out tonight, as my tent was tucked under the trees and with the grass so high they may not see me hidden away in there. I said if I heard anything I would start blowing my whistle loudly and alert him. We agreed on a plan and left it at that.I had a bobbin rod with me so the day was spent foraging and catching dinner and evening meal, the odd snooze and a wander along the river there. It was a good day and everything I needed. I had a small rocket stove with me and I made a cup of tea as dusk arrived. It wasn't too cold either and I went to bed with a good sleepy head on me, all thought of this morning agreement completely forgotten. I must have nodded off quick as I awoke with a start, I had no idea of the time, but it was much darker outside but the moon was out so I could see shadows of the trees and bushes. I listened, trying to work out what had woken me, but I heard nothing, I realised I needed to pee, and that was what had woken me, I unzipped tent and fly and nipped over to the nearest apple tree. I had my head torch on my head and I switched it on without thinking, as I was worried about peeing on my boots, I looked down at my aim when this feeling hit me all at once. Utter dread, I felt like I was suddenly in the middle of a war and I could not see any of the enemy, I knew they were there watching and they could see my every move but I could not see them. Hundreds of eyes watching me from within the trees, I looked up quickly and saw eyeshine, this eyeshine dropped to the floor and vanished. I was back in that tent like lightening and was stuck between staying and packing up when I remembered the farmer and that I was supposed to be acting as night watchman not quivering in my sleeping bag. I lay there and caught my breath slowed my breathing right down and made the decision to listen. If I heard anything I would blow the whistle loud, but nothing happened, I lay there for what felt like an eternity in silence, I slowly slid my hand into my kit bag and got a hold of the whistle, just in case.As the minutes ticked by I started to feel stupid, I had heard the odd rustle of grass but that could be any animal or bird known to man. I didn't hear anything else for a long time so I decided to try and sleep. As I was drifting back off, suddenly from nowhere that feeling was back, I felt frozen and scared out of my wits. I felt a movement to the side of my hip and to my horror I felt something forcibly pushed under the tarp under my tent and under me, It felt like a huge arm, thick with muscle and hard and I screamed like a banshee. The arm shot from under me and I kept screaming until the farmer nearly caused his own death by opening my tent. I screamed in his face like a man possessed. When he calmed me down and I explained what had happened I don't think he believed me, I saw his quick glance at the miniature rum bottle beside me, but I had filled it with linctus for my chest and now it looked suspiciously like Sloe Gin. He was a bit annoying to say the least that I had awoken him and he had come running in the hopes of solving his chicken thief mystery. I excused myself, lit all my torches and lights and packed up as fast as I have every packed up a tent. I was camping close to Scar fell once when the bad winds happened in 87/88 and that was terrifying. But this was like nothing I could explain. How on earth can an arm that thick and full of muscle not only pick me up like I weighed nothing but also get right up to me without me hearing a thing. If you would like to join our Worldwide community please contact us using debbiehatswell@gmail.com. Today we’re talking to another kick-ass, badass female distiller: Ashby Marshall, Co-Founder & Brand Director of Spirit Works Distillery. I’m not kidding when I say Ashby is a forking badass. She met her husband and co-founder, Timo, while they were both sailing around on the Rainbow Warrior for Greenpeace. Wow!! Just a few years later, they laid anchor in the Bay area. They originally wanted to work with local microdistilleries to reproduce a version of Timo’s family Sloe Gin recipe, but their goal grew into something bigger: creating something sustainable together. This naturally led to Spirit Works’ grain-to-glass philosophy, which ensures a quality product distilled from California-grown organic Red Winter Wheat. Of course, Timo’s Sloe Gin recipe is still the basis of their flagship spirit, and Spirit Works Distillery is actually the only producer of Sloe Gin in the U.S. We also discuss: Being a sailor What exactly a Sloe Berry is The process, equipment, and ingredients that go into distilling How to identify high-quality spirits Laws that affect the spirit industry Resources: Learn more at spiritworksdistillery.com Connect with Spirit Works: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram Ashby & Timo Marshall’s Bio: Husband and wife team Timo and Ashby Marshall bring a combination of British tradition and New World innovation to Spirit Works Distillery. Timo hails from a small coastal village in southwest England, where his family has been refining their sloe gin recipe for generations, using sloes handpicked every autumn. Ashby, on the other hand, has a deep passion and impressive palate for whiskey and its complexity. She was born and raised on the West Coast and is proud to be the first distiller in her family. Ashby and Timo met while working together for several years as sailors on environmental research vessels. Eventually, they moved to San Francisco and began dreaming of creating something together, something unique and sustainable. Originally, they hoped to join forces with an established distillery and create a traditional sloe gin based on Timo’s family recipe. However, as they researched, the grain-to-glass process quickly became a central focus. They wanted to be a part of every step of the production process so they set out to start their own distillery. Together, Ashby and Timo spent several years visiting and learning in other distilleries, enrolling in courses and workshops around the country, and apprenticing under several grain-to-glass mentors. After many years of dreaming, learning, and planning, they discovered the perfect community in West Sonoma County and set up shop in The Barlow in Sebastopol. Today, they can be found working side by side at the distillery with their Boston Terrier, Bandit, producing Vodka, Gin, Sloe Gin, Barrel Gin, Straight Wheat Whiskey, and Straight Rye Whiskey. They are incredibly excited to be able to share their passion and products made batch by batch, from grain to glass.

It's the mid point between Christmas and New Year…we might benefit from a break from the excesses. We can't go cold-turkey from the excesses of non-stop food and drink so a gin and tonic or a bit of sloe gin is a welcome comfort. The Sloe, or wild Plum, is the fruit of the Blackthorn found in the hedgerows. By autumn these small fruits are oval, blue-black and their sourness makes them perfect to cover with sugar and gin which by Christmas has formed into a perfectly luxurious holiday tipple, sloe gin. Cicely Mary Barker, The Sloe Fairy, Flower Fairy series c. 1927 The Sloe, or wild Plum, is the fruit of the Blackthorn found in the hedgerows. By autumn these small fruits are oval, blue-black and their sourness makes them perfect to cover with sugar and gin which by Christmas will have formed into a perfectly luxurious holiday tipple, sloe gin. Gin was invented in Holland around 1650 and it made it’s way to England not long after. Distilled from grain, it gets its name from the crushed juniper berries it passes through which are called genever in Dutch. Juniper berries have long been used medicinally with their cordials being renowned for their astringent, restorative and sustaining properties. They were even thrown on the floors of medieval homes so that when guests walked upon them the cracked juniper berries would emit their fragrant spice...a sort of applied pot pouri. Less than a hundred years from when it was invented, England found itself in the midst of an all-out gin craze. Gin was the first spirit produced in the industrial age and gin was incredibly inexpensive due to the fact that the government did not tax grain OR distillation. Sloe gin was known as the poor mans port' and adding sloes helped to cover the many unfortunate ingredients being added to it to make it even cheaper. The Gin acts changed legislation to try to curb the ‘gin craze.’ Charles Dickens loved gin and punches and there are many legends connecting his literary works and social habits and excursions. A few years back I decided to bundle all my interests together and rebrand from Smy Chutney to Smy Goodness so that all my preserves, crafts, products and workshops could live together in one place. My own podcast seemed a suitable place to uncover, understand and enjoy things related to food, art, history and design. Please do share your stories, knowledge, questions and suggestions.
