The extended Siri discussion wraps up with a comparison to a very old (and fondly remembered) program. The next set of expectations and desires included why Apple needs to focus on a HomePod ecosystem or whether the existing iPhone/app is adequate, and how it has one key feature that may be an advantage or a disadvantage. Have an Amazon Echo? It may be able to do more than you think, but you would never know it. Next, the Windows-on-macOS debate takes center stage. Whether it's Alexa, Google Home or Siri, most of us probably use at least one of these. But a heated topic of debate continues to surround these devices: are they listening to us and recording our conversations? In this next episode of Trial By Podcast, Graduate Lawyers Monique Messenger and William Wade answer three of our biggest questions: - Are they recording my conversations? - Where is that information stored? - What is being done with that data?

In today’s episode, I speak to AI and Machine Learning Scientist and founder of Kingfisher Labs - Dr Catherine Breslin. Catherine spent several years in academic research before she joined the Amazon Alexa team during its infancy back in 2014. Whilst there, Catherine managed the Cambridge-based AI Alexa team which were working on inventing foundational Machine Learning tech to build intelligent conversational interfaces for a myriad of devices, apps, languages and environments. The team also worked on technology that enabled the automatic speech recognition and natural language understanding behind Amazon’s Alexa.Catherine holds a First Class Honours degree in engineering and computer science from Oxford University, a Masters in the field of Speech, Text and Internet Technology from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Engineering and Automatic Speech Recognition, also from Cambridge. In this fascinating conversation, we talk about how Catherine got into engineering and what led her to the field of speech recognition, what the early days of working on Alexa were like and what the wins and issues were when it first launched. We also talk about the future of smart devices, what working on Alexa has taught her about human nature, how hard it is from a science perspective, to turn virtual assistants into true companions and how far out we are from achieving AGI - (artificial general intelligence).I hope you enjoy it!-----Let us know what you think of this episode and please rate, review and share - it means the world to me and helps others to find it too.------Danielle on Twitter @daniellenewnham and Instagram @daniellenewnhamCatherine on Twitter @catherinebuk / Website / Instagram @catherinebreslin-----This episode was hosted by me - Danielle Newnham, a recovering founder, author and writer who has been interviewing tech founders and innovators for ten years - and produced by Jolin Cheng. According to a UN study published last year, smart assistants with female voices are often programmed with contrite and demure responses to verbal abuse or harassment, entrenching harmful gender biases. In the second of two episodes, Alex Hern takes a look at the sexualisation of female AI and robots, what this means for how we treat them, and asks how we can give them a feminist reboot. From Rosie the Robot in the 1960s animated sitcom The Jetsons to Siri and Alexa today, technologies that perform the roles of housekeeper and secretary are often presented as female. What does the gendering of these machines say about our expectations of who should be doing this kind of work? In the first of two episodes exploring the world of fembots and female AI assistants, the Guardian’s UK technology editor, Alex Hern, examines whether smart assistants are reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes. Alexa, Google Assistant, Bixby, Cortana are not the only smart speakers, they all have something in common: created and baked by a big company. But they are not the only assistants in the market. In this episode we dive into some of the other players. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
