What happens when the biggest threat to a business, family, or leadership team isn't strategy, money, or intelligence, but the things nobody is willing to say?On this episode of I Am Refocused Radio, Shemaiah Reed sits down with René Sonneveld, a former Fortune 500 executive turned ICF Master Certified Coach, author, and trusted advisor to executives, enterprise families, boards, and high performers around the world. René's career has taken him from international tax law and global banking to senior leadership roles with organizations including UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Citibank, where he worked at the intersection of family business, governance, wealth, and generational legacy.René shares what years inside boardrooms and family enterprises taught him about the human side of leadership: unspoken tension, trust, succession, identity, emotional dynamics, difficult conversations, and the decisions that determine whether a legacy grows or fractures. We also explore ideas from his book The Elephant in the Family Room, which examines the emotional forces operating beneath the surface of family businesses, along with his forthcoming book Invisible Capital: Building the Family Enterprise of Tomorrow, scheduled for October 2026.This conversation goes beyond business strategy. It's about developing the courage to address what everyone sees but no one wants to discuss, becoming a stronger leader, and building something that can outlive you.Because sometimes the most important conversation in the room is the one nobody is having.https://www.renesonneveld.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Subscribe now at YouTube.com/@RefocusedNetworkThank you for your time.
Of luistert.
In this episode of Innovation Meets Leadership, host Natalie Born sits down with executive coach, former diplomat, and author Rene Sonneveld for a powerful conversation about leadership, innovation, and the unseen forces that shape both.Rene explores why innovation doesn't begin with strategy decks or brainstorm sessions—but with the courage to name what everyone feels and no one is saying. From family enterprises to executive teams, he explains how unspoken fears, emotional blind spots, and “elephants in the room” quietly block creativity and decision-making. This episode is a must-listen for leaders navigating complexity, legacy, and high-stakes conversations—at work and at home.[00:00 – 02:30] Innovation Begins Where Certainty EndsWhy innovation often emerges from confusion, fear, and discomfort—not clarity.Rene's global experience working with leaders and enterprise families. The link between emotional honesty and transformational leadership.[02:31 – 05:50] The Elephant in the Family RoomWhat leaders lose when they avoid naming the real issue. How trapped energy and unspoken tension collapse creativity. Why this dynamic shows up in families, boards, and executive teams alike.[05:51 – 09:40] Leaders Don't Have Decision Problems—They Have Emotion-Naming ProblemsHow fear hijacks the nervous system and shuts down innovation.Fight, flight, or freeze responses in leadership settings. Why regulation—not fearlessness—creates better decisions.[09:41 – 13:30] “Flipping the Lid” and the Amygdala HijackHow psychological threats trigger reactive leadership behavior. Why leaders say “the wrong thing” under pressure. The importance of pausing, breathing, and naming emotions to restore clarity.[13:31 – 16:40] Naming Fear as the Gateway to BreakthroughWhy innovation cannot thrive in environments of fear or walking on eggshells. How truth-telling frees energy and reactivates creativity.A real-world example of long-stuck family dynamics unlocking new possibilities.[16:41 – 19:20] Authenticity, Messiness, and Modern LeadershipWhy authenticity is becoming increasingly rare. The cost of performative leadership—especially in the age of social media. Why innovation flourishes when leaders allow complexity and humanity.[19:21 – 22:50] Stories, Identity, and the Lids We Put on OurselvesHow internal narratives limit leadership capacity. Why the lies we believe quietly cap innovation.Reframing leadership as presence, not perfection.[22:51 – 25:10] Ecosystems That Support InnovationWhy environment matters—at work and at home. The connection between place, pace, and creative capacity.Designing a life and leadership context that allows innovation to breathe.[25:11 – 27:40] Final Reflections: Innovation as a PracticeWhy innovation is not a performance—but a daily practice.Rene's parting message on courage, imagination, and trust. How naming truth transforms fear into possibility.Quotes“Innovation doesn't start with what we put on paper. "The night before battle, warriors would check each other for wounds. That's what a good men's group does." Men aren't designed to carry everything alone. Strength isn't built in isolation—it's forged through loyalty, shared struggle, and honest reflection. When men try to solve life entirely in their own heads, pressure compounds. Expectations rise, purpose blurs, and silence becomes dangerous. Brotherhood isn't a luxury; it's a stabilizing force that keeps a man grounded, accountable, and connected to who he really is. Throughout this conversation, the importance of male circles becomes unmistakable. Men need other men who can tell them the truth, challenge their blind spots, and hold space when life hits hard. Success—financial or otherwise—doesn't translate into wisdom everywhere else. Without peers who understand the internal weight men carry, even the most accomplished lives can quietly unravel. "Leadership is not something you do it's something that happens through who you are." True strength in leadership begins at home. Families built on trust, communication, and that face the emotions beneath the surface, create a foundation far more powerful than any set of numbers on a spreadsheet. Stability, purpose, and resilience come from the invisible yet tangible forces of love, compassion, and loyalty. These shape how people show up in life and business. René Sonneveld explains how these principles guided him through extraordinary chapters: global career pivots, deep personal loss, and the rediscovery of love. René shows why family governance fails without emotional governance, why "invisible capital" determines longevity, and why the most important asset a leader brings into any room is who they are. His insights tie into the message that family alignment wins over financial success. That's the true measure of legacy. René is a father of five and a trusted coach to enterprise families worldwide. From corporate boardrooms to deeply human crossroads, René helps families protect unity, purpose, and generational strength. Expert action steps: Prioritize emotional health and invisible capital—not just financial metrics. Lead from identity and character rather than roles or authority.
The hardest part of leadership isn't strategy or spreadsheets—it's the unspoken dynamics that quietly shape trust, decisions, and performance. In this episode of Leadership on the Rocks, Bethany Rees talks with René Sonneveld—former Fortune 500 CEO, leadership coach, and author of The Elephant in the Family Room. René shares why awareness of self, others, and the systems we're part of is the true foundation of leadership. He unpacks how unresolved emotions, family history, and hidden tensions often matter more than market forces—and why leaders who learn to notice and navigate these “elephants” build stronger teams, manage conflict with wisdom, and create cultures of trust.
'Leiderschap gaat over relaties. Links'Sprekend leiderschap' is te bestellen bij Managementboek > https://www.managementboek.nl/boek/9789463823609/sprekend-leiderschap-jan-sonneveldAls boekentip nam Sonneveld 'Enough Said What's gone wrong with the language of politics?' van Mark Thompson mee. Today, I am excited to speak with René Sonneveld, a Leadership and Family Business Coach and Honorary Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Uruguay. René a has rich history as Managing Director, CEO, and Chairman at Fortune 500 companies and family-run businesses across four continents, and he now leverages this vast experience to coach leaders and corporate teams. Besides leadership and family enterprise coaching, René is deeply committed to sustainability. He aims to create a green hydrogen supply chain from South America to Europe. Throughout his career, René has served many multigenerational families and has found that often, as he puts it, there's “an elephant in the room” that gets in the way of families collaborating effectively and achieving their goals. He talks about what “the elephant in the room” is and how to best approach it and, eventually, dispense with it. René eventually discovered coaching and dedicated his life to this noble calling. He shares his beliefs on why coaching is the best tool to empower families to succeed and how it helps eliminate “the elephant in the room” that holds them back. One technique René deploys in his coaching work is what he calls “the icebreaker”. He describes how it works and what the benefits families and family enterprises can reap from this practical tool. Families and family enterprises are complex organisms, commonly involving a great number of players who are entangled in complicated and often emotionally charged relationships. These can include family leaders, blood family, children, in-laws, advisors, to mention just a few key constituents. René offers his advice on when to bring in whom in the coaching process with the family in order to achieve the best results. Enjoy this insightful conversation with a world-renowned leadership coach and family advisor.

Credits:

If you are ready to expand your e-commerce footprint, you have several choices. For example, suppose you have been selling to the most popular channels, such as Amazon in North America. But the decision is not as simple as that as you need to compare the channels in each country, understand regulatory nuances, and cultural synergies to be successful in each marketplace and market. In today's episode, we have our guest, Paul Sonneveld, who discusses the marketplace expansion strategy for e-commerce sellers or manufacturers aspiring to expand their footprint through digital commerce. He also describes visibility into the marketplaces around the world and their nuances.
