Director Simon Otto is here to chat failed Christmas gifts, formative films, and finding the balance of a multithreaded storyline story and having to take into account theatrical experience versus streaming consumption. This interview contains mild spoilers for That Christmas. More about Simon Otto Simon Otto is the Director of That Christmas. In our 67th podcast we interviewed iAnimate Feature animation alumni and DreamWorks Animation Supervising Animator, Ravi Kamble Govind. Ravi was one of our first students to attend iAnimate and one of our first graduating classes. It has been remarkable to follow his growth and success since graduating. Since graduating, Ravi has worked on many feature films and commercials. Ravi worked on the feature film 'The Penguins of Madagascar' where he was promoted as character lead on the octopus villain "Dave" and was nominated for an Annie. He served as a character developer on the 'Detective Pikachu' movie, and has acted as one of the Supervising Animators on both the upcoming Abominable movie and Boss Baby 2 feature. Ravi is both passionate as well as humble about his craft, which made for a fun and informative interview.
Supervising Animator...
How does it feel to animate a returning character for a commercial, is it like meeting an old friend? What kind of animation style is the most rewarding one to work with, and how do you make a plain egg express feelings? In episode #42 of our podcast Yellow Brick Road, we discuss a bunch of characters from different commercials. Senior Animator & Animation Director Rickard Engqvist and Supervising Animator & Head of Keyframe Animation Raoul Cacciamani walk down memory lane and talk about characters like the Freddy (“spokeschameleon” for Müller Milch’s Froop), Frank the Sheep (“spokessheep” for Swedish telecom brand Tele2), Vinnie (“spokeshorse” for ATG), the oddball Brilleland eyeballs and the German oldtimer Kleine Hunger (spokesperson for Müller Milch) Also: the toe fungus film that made it to Superball and a trip around the world in an animated puppet world for flygresor.se.
James Ford Murphy has been an animator on “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters Inc.,” and the Academy Award-winning features, “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” and “Ratatouille.” He was also the Supervising Animator on the Academy Award-winning short film, “For the Birds,” and a Directing Animator on the Golden Globe-winning feature film “Cars.” Those are just some of his contributions since he joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1996. Jim Murphy attended Marquette University and graduated from the Diederich College of Communication in 1986. When he was in Milwaukee, he stopped by the college to share his career journey and advice with students. Rome Gandelsman, a senior majoring in journalism has Murphy's story.
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon? Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned? Well that's because they just heard about these thirteen things from Disney's Pocahontas. So thanks for giving us your time while you gobble these up. Animators working on the film regarded it as being one of the hardest films ever produced by the studio. The complex color schemes, angular shapes, and facial expressions meant that the film was in production for five years. Pocahontas is now frequently cited as being one of the most beautifully, and realistically, animated characters in the Disney canon, her fluid movements mainly being attributed to rotoscoping. The film's release on June 23, 1995, was also the 400th anniversary of the real Pocahontas' birth. The Disney executives had all the secondary animal characters, such as Meeko and Flit, lose all of their dialogue in order to make the film a bit more serious. The end credits song "If I Never Knew You", was cut after children in test audiences found it boring and the adults found it too depressing. The unfinished sequence was shown in ABC's 1997 airing of the film. For the 10th anniversary DVD release, the animation was completed and the song inserted back into the film, as well as a short reprise in the final scene. "Colors of the Wind" was the first song written for this production, and helped define the tone and direction of the film. Though this song features the word "mountain" in its verses, the real Pocahontas supposedly never saw any mountains in her lifetime. John Candy had provided a large amount of voice work into a character named "Redfeather", a turkey as Pocahontas' sidekick. After Candy's death in 1994, the concept was scrapped. In real-life, Pocahontas would have been more likely to be topless and likely covered in tribal tattoos, even her face. Pocahontas is one of the few cartoon characters to be granted a proper "photo spread" in Harper's Bazaar. For the June 1995 edition, Gianni Versace, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, and Isaac Mizrahi all designed special outfits for her, which were then drawn by Disney animators for the magazine. Upon it's initial release, then-studio head Jeffrey Katzenberg regarded Pocahontas as a more prestigious project than The Lion King, and even believed that it had a chance of earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, following in the steps of Beauty and the Beast. John Pomeroy was the Supervising Animator for John Smith, and watched several Errol Flynn movies, as reference for the movements of the character. Once the look of Smith was finalized, fourteen other animators were drafted in to make him come to life. As all the actors recorded their dialogue separately, they did not meet each other until the premiere. Mel Gibson did not attend the premiere because he was away filming Braveheart. As of 2019, Irene Bedard (who voiced Pocahontas) still has not met him. Shirley "Little Dove" Custalow-McGowan, a descendant of the real Pocahontas, worked on the film as a consultant. When she discovered that there would be a lot of artistic license with history, she left the project. This is the first Disney film to be censored before going to theaters, due to "racial slurs in the song 'Savages'". Some lyrics where changed for the film, as they were viewed as inappropriate (even though authentic to the setting). If you watch the scene in the film, it's obvious the animators had no time to match the mouth movements with the new lyrics. Interestingly, for some unknown reason, the original motion picture soundtrack still features the earlier lyrics. Pocahontas (1995) G | 1h 21min | Animation, Adventure, Drama | 23 June 1995 (USA) An English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth-century Virginia. Today’s conversation is a crash course into the journey of an animator. It’s about how a young man who never met an art medium he didn’t like chose to pursue a highly competitive and challenging career and truly thrived in his art form. We follow Joshua Beveridge’s early memories in a home filled with art history books, as a kid always painting and drawing or sculpting, to attending a College of Art and Design to being the Animator Director on "Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse". Joshua Beveridge is a Head of Character Animator at Sony Pictures Imageworks. His other titles have included Animation Director and Supervising Animator. Beveridge earned his BA in Computer Animation from the Ringling College of Art and Design before landing his first professional job on Disney’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Since then he’s worked on various teams as a Character Animator, Supervising Animator or Lead Animator in popular films such as “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Hotel Transylvania 2,” “Arthur Christmas,” “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” and “Storks.” His work on Warner Bros “I Am Legend,” starring Will Smith and Alice Braga, garnered a 2008 Visual Effects Society Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Animated Character in a Live action Motion Picture. Beveridge’s latest animated feature film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has broken the mold (again) for telling stories. Quotes: “The idea of animation being a job people did was kind of like a lightbulb, aha, moment.” “You have to be comfortable with making things. Just making something is better than trying to make something perfect and letting that paralyze you from trying.” “We’re manipulating every single shape and motion and form is sculpted, crafted, posed and a decision. Nothing happens accidentally.” “Talent is such a small percentage of anything really great. Work ethic is the most important. Work ethic runs circles around talent any day and I was an early subscriber to that.” “The actual process of truly being an animator I didn’t learn until on the job and I think that’s a luxury that I don’t think exists anymore.” “I feel like with every promotion I’ve gotten it’s really just been another way to help more animators.” “There’s nothing impulsive about animation.” “If you are afraid in art that’s usually an indication that you’re on the right path.” “There’s no such thing as enough information. All we’re doing is trying to be as observant as possible.” Joshua Beveridge IMDB Instagram https://joshuabeveridge.com/ Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Official Trailer https://www.ianimate.net/ https://www.animationmentor.com/ Storks Trailer

We dig into Craig's article and pull out some great advice for people looking to enter animation - or any other field frankly...it's about making the work better, not taking feedback personally. We then wrap up with a open discussion about our own personal experience taking feedback too personally and explained how the turned out in the end. Have you experienced a moment of frustration when you received feedback that you weren't hoping for or expecting on your project? How did you rally? Did you find the work to be better in the long run? Let us know in the comments below or join in the conversation on the Pixar Post Forum. Pixar Post - T.J. & Julie
