THE START OF A BEAUTIFUL PARTNERSHIP— A DETECTIVE DUO WITH HEART AND FURSteve's ripe for a new relationship—divorced, over forty, and still dusting himself off from a lamentable sojourn in prison, an unusual experience for a professor, to say the least. (He really must do something about his hacking habit!)Rochester's a handsome, homeless, loveable golden retriever whom Steve had always found too big, too enthusiastic, and too shaggy. But tragedy struck their neighborhood when someone murdered Caroline, Steve's nice next-door neighbor, while she walked her best friend, Rochester. Steve's the unlucky guy who finds her body and he just knows, despite their differences, that he has to take in the broken-hearted pooch.Once they're both properly rehomed, these two form a detective partnership that'll make you sit up and beg for more. Eat your hearts out, Spade & Archer—pretty soon they've got a warm and fuzzy thing going. Big furry forthrightness—not to mention heart—meets tech-savvy craftiness as they work their case.Rochester has no idea he has the potential to be the greatest doggy detective since Rex the Wonder Dog was a pup. But he's got a job to do and he has to find a way to train Steve in the fine art of investigation. Unbeknownst to Steve, his life just changed radically—because a big furry mentor has just trotted into it. Both want justice for Caroline, and Rochester's way of expressing it is simply to sniff out one clue after another in the hope his two-legged colleague can piece them together.Steve's way—when all's said and done— is still to bend the law a little, with the help of Caroline's contraband laptop. And also to follow Rochester's trail of treats.Fans of animal cozies—and all cozies!--will find pure gold here especially aficionados of mutt heroes from the aforementioned Rex through the immortal pooches created by Spencer Quinn, David Rosenfelt, Garth Stein, and Laurien Berenson. Lovers of canine classic films like TURNER AND HOOCH, BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA, and the immortal BENJI will also want to sit and stay awhile. Luckily, there's a whole litter of cases out there.Neil S. Today on the show, we have director, Raja Gosnell. He directed comedy classics like Big Momma's House, starring Martin Lawrence. Never Been Kissed, starring Drew Berrymore, and Yours, Mine & Ours starring Dennis Quaid.Raja is best known as the director who brought not one but two beloved children's cartoons to the big screen, Scooby-Doo and The Smurfs. We also discuss the original vision that Raja and writer James Gunn had for Scooby-Doo. Let's say we finally understand why Scoob and Shaggy always had the munchies. He also directed the relatively low-budget runaway hit Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Raja's films have grossed almost $2 billion at the worldwide box office.Raja wasn't always a director; he started his film career as an assistant editor in the late 1970s.His first credit as a film's main editor was the romantic comedy The Lonely Guy (1984), for director Arthur Hiller. During the 1980s, Gosnell served as editor in films directed by Tom Laughlin, David Worth, Bob Dahlin, Bert Convy, Christopher Leitch, Annabel Jankel, Rocky Morton, Phillip Schuman, and Chris Columbus. For Chris Columbus, he edited the comedy film Heartbreak Hotel (1988), which features a 1970s teenager kidnapping singer Elvis Presley to bring home as a gift for his mother. During the 1990s, Gosnell would serve as editor in several more films by Columbus. The 1990s started with Gosnell working as an editor in two high-profile projects: Pretty Woman (1990) by Garry Marshall and Home Alone (1990) by Chris Columbus. Both turned out to be among the major hits of the year 1990.He then worked in the Columbus films Only the Lonely (1991), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), and Nine Months (1995).Raja and I discuss his remarkable career as an editor, why he jumped to directing, and why he chose to do the thing everyone says not to do direct children and animals. I had a ball talking shop with Raja.We also discuss his remarkable new film Gun and a Hotel Bible, which he co-directed with Alicia Joy LeBlanc.Based on an award-winning play, GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE is the story of a young man on the verge of a violent act (Pete) and his encounter with a personified hotel bible (Gideon). Can Gideon sway Pete before Pete pulls the trigger?Enjoy my conversation with Raja Gosnell.

Things sure have come a long way in the Disney "animals trying to get home" subgenre of films. From silent animals being narrated over, to standard voice-over work, to BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA where CGI has advanced enough to make their mouths move. But through all the technilogical advancements, the song remains the same - beloved pet needs to get home, embarks on an incredible journey, and maybe learns something along the way. It's a tried-and-true formula, and this version is no different - the dogs are just smaller and the voice acting more impressive.

Kate Caldwell is an incredibly successful and talented casting director. Her credits include films such as Hercules, Blades of Glory, Unbelievable, Krampus, Cloverfield, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2 and 3 and popular TV series such as Kingdom and Sleepy Hollow. Kate has worked on both sides of the pond and is currently based in Bristol. We talk about changes in the industry in recent years and discuss how technology has made everything so much easier. The pandemic has had a positive impact in some ways for Kate who can now work remotely from Bristol – whereas previously UK casting directors had to be based in London. We talk about the audition process and find out that casting directors have to audition for their jobs too! For Kate the best part of casting is being able to work with the actors in person at the auditions. She thinks it is great that actors can send in self tapes but she feels that this process can be very difficult because it means they're auditioning in a vacuum. Kate talks us through the casting process from script to screen and she shares with us what she looks for when casting for the screen versus casting for a voiceover. Kate believes it is important to be able to make strong character choices and to commit to those choices in an audition so that the director can get an understanding of your work. Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 6, Halloween, which originally aired on October 30, 2012 and was written by David Iserson and directed by Jesse Peretz. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess is working at a haunted house for a Halloween festival and realizes that she has real feelings for Sam. Meanwhile, Nick reconnects with an old college flame, Schmidt tries to get back together with Cece, and Winston tries to rekindle his relationship with Shelby. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Beverly Hills Chihuahua - When Nick is telling Amelia about Los Angeles he says that many of the scenes of Beverly Hills Chihuahua were shot in the city.Axel Foley - Schmidt calls Winston Axel Foley when Winston's dressed up as a cop for Halloween.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Woody Allen - Schmidt thought Jess' haunted house costume looked like a zombie version of Woody Allen. For over six decades, Woody Allen is known for being an American film director, writer, actor, and comedian for multiple Academy Award-winning films. Woody Allen is also known for his odd relationships and recently, allegations of sexual abuse.Marx Brothers - Winston added to the conversation of ragging on Jess' costume by imitating the Marx Brothers. The Marx Brothers were an American family comedy act that was in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in motion pictures from 1905 to 1949. The brother's characters consisted of Chico, Harpo, Groucho, and Zeppo, each of whom developed a highly distinctive stage persona.[The Teenage Mutant] Ninja Turtle[s] - Robby mentioned that it was his dream to be a Ninja Turtle. Ninja Turtle is short for The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which are are a fictional superhero quartet of juvenile bipedal tortoises, trained in the ancient art of ninjitsu ninja that appear in a self-titled franchise consisting of comic books, animated children's cartoons, feature films, and other tie-in products.Bea Arthur - While not mentioned in the episode, Nick was dressed up as Bea Arthur by wearing a bee antenna and a shirt that says Arthur. Bea Arthur was an American activist, comedian, and actress. She started her career in 1947 and performed in musicals, operas, tv, and film.Bugs Bunny - When Sam is trying to downplay his interaction with kids at this office, he says that the kid gave him a picture where she just traced Bugs Bunny. Bugs Bunny is an animated cartoon character created in the 1930s and has since appeared in more films than any other cartoon character and has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.Guy who shot John Lennon -  Schmidt thought Robby looked like a guy who shot John Lennon dressed as a Ninja Turtle in his Halloween costume. Mark David Chapman murdered John Lennon in 1980 and at the time Mark David Chapman's appearance was similar to Robby's in this episode. John Lennon was a British singer-songwriter who was a frontman of The Beatles, the famed British rock band. Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike - Schmidt's second costume after he gives Robby his Abe Lincoln suit is Matthew McConaughey in the movie Magic Mike. This movie aired in 2012 and centered around a young, new male stripper and his mentor. Matthew McConaughey plays Dallas, a strip club owner who has dreams of a full empire of clubs. We also cover how Schmidt is obviously going to be young Abe Lincoln for Halloween as our “Schmidtism”. Our “not in the 2020s” were how Schmidt continues to put Robby down and the way he jumped up on the carousel with Cece. Our “yes in the 2020s” was everything about Robby and Sam being honest. We also explore the careers of Maria Thayer (Amelia) and Nate Hartley (Frankenstein's monster), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Zoë Hall (the demon nurse), Lora Plattner (the mummy), Hesley Harps (the coat of arms), and Ryan Christiansen (the cop).In this podcast we also mentioned the iconic scene from Beverly Hills Cop where Axel Foley put a banana in a car's tailpipe. In our spoiler section, we also mentioned an article that covers how this episode might predict future storylines which you can find here (but does have spoilers!).The Halloween costumes of the episode are:Jess - Zombie of Christina BarcelonaSchmidt - Young Abraham Lincoln (and later Matthew McConaughey from Magic Mike)Nick - Bea ArthurWinston - CopCece - AngelRobby - Ninja TurtleShelby - Reigning Cats and DogsSam - Clown (although he only wears a nose)While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Abraham Lincoln - Schmidt decides to dress up like Young Abe Lincoln for Halloween; Abraham Lincoln was the United States' 16th President from 1861 until 1865 when he was assassinated. He led the United States through the American Civil War and is often remembered as a hero of the US and is always ranked as one of the greatest American presidents in history. Queen of England - When Winston is trying to explain why Shelby's outfit doesn't make sense, he says that he doesn't see the Queen of England running around with a cape and British people stapled to it. The current Queen of England is Elizabeth II born in 1926 and she became the queen in 1952. She is the longest serving female head of state and the world's oldest living monarch.Purim - When Cece tells Schmidt to change she mentions that he has more costumes in his closet and Schmidt clarifies that they're for Purim which occurs in March. Purim is a Jewish holiday which is recounted in the Book of Esther from the 5th century BCE to remember the saving of the Jewish people from a Persian official. It is celebrated on the 14th day of the Hebrew month Adar and some customs include wearing masks and costumes while celebrating publicly and in parades.Guillotine Choke Hold - As Schmidt is talking to Winston about Cece, he mentions putting Robby into a guillotine choke hold to “show [him] a nice guy”. This is a martial arts and wrestling form using the arms to circle their opponent's neck like a guillotine. This prevents airflow to the lungs and is done to prevent the opponent from escaping. A guillotine was best known in the French Revolution as a way to carry out executions by beheading. This episode got an 8/10 Rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Nick and Kelly rated this episode an 8.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 7!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

Maybe best known for his starring role as Mark St. James on Ugly Betty (opposite Vanessa Williams), Michael Urie is not only a star of the stage and screen, but also a director and executive producer. He originated the role of Arnold in the Broadway revival of Torch Song (after receiving Lucille Lortel Award and Drama League Award nominations in the off-Broadway production), as well as the role of Brian in Grand Horizons on Broadway. Other stage credits include How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, High Buttons Shoes, The Government Inspector, Angels in America, and his award winning performance in Buyer and Cellar. Michael’s other TV and film credits include Modern Family, Workaholics, Younger, The Good Fight, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and a guest judge on RuPauls Drag Race. Michael can currently be heard in As the Curtain Rises, Broadway's first podcast soap opera, and is part of a digital performance of a new play called Smithtown, which premieres online February 13th. Although born in Houston, Texas, Michael grew up outside of Dallas, and as a child loved and wanted to make movies. It was eventually his high school theater teacher who encouraged and challenged him to pursue his passions for directing and acting, and a poetry competition where he discovered his comedic chops, that led him on his journey to Juilliard.  Looking back on the beginning of his career post college, Michael opens up about the first time he auditioned for a TV pilot, while also balancing being in play. Although that particular pilot didn’t get picked up, Michael chronicles how the experience guided him to his starring role on Ugly Betty a few years later. He also shares his thoughts on film acting vs. theater acting, and “the feat of watching a theater artist go on the journey in front of you right then and there”. Michael talks with us about how he was able to incorporate this feat in his newest project Smithtown, a play which was adapted for Zoom and shot virtually.  In this episode, we talk about:  Finding his footing in high school theater class Falling in love with Shakespeare and the classics  His first TV pilot audition, a flop, and Ugly Betty a few years later Working with Vanessa Williams on Ugly Betty  His new project, Smithtown His approach to and opinion on social media Connect with Michael: IG: @MichaelUrieLikesIt Twitter: @MichaelUrie Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com.
