In today's episode, I spoke with Andy Storch, an author, keynote speaker, consultant, and trainer who helps professionals in large companies own their careers and prepare for the future. As someone who transitioned from corporate consulting to entrepreneurship, Andy shares his journey of building multiple successful ventures including his book "Own Your Career, Own Your Life," his speaking business, and the Talent Development Think Tank conference and community. This conversation couldn't come at a better time for you, my audience of consultants, coaches, and experts building your businesses. As AI tools make certain aspects of our work more automated, Andy highlights why human connections and personal branding are becoming even more valuable currencies in today's marketplace.Three Key Takeaways You Can Apply Today:✅ Commit to consistent sales activities - The most successful consultants maintain regular sales efforts regardless of how busy they get with client work. Set up a simple system to reach out, follow up, and stay in regular contact with prospects, understanding that in the corporate world, sales cycles often take 3-6 months.✅ Build around your strengths - Take time to identify what you excel at and enjoy, then structure your business to leverage those strengths. Andy learned to focus on his speaking and facilitation talents while delegating project management tasks that didn't align with his skills.✅ Use tools to stay organized - Implement systems like Notion to keep your contacts, sales activities, and communications organized in one searchable place. Consider hiring a virtual assistant to handle lower-value tasks so you can focus on high-value activities like sales and client delivery.Andy's Three Steps for Future Success:

Host Andy Storch sits down with Jennifer Butler, the director of leadership development at Elevance Health, to delve into the intricacies of creating comprehensive leadership programs. With over 25 years of experience in the field, Jennifer shares her insights on implementing effective leadership development initiatives, including live events, virtual sessions, and small group coaching.Together, they discuss:The structure of various developmental programs at Elevance Health, from manager-focused projects aimed at understanding the company's value chain to executive programs featuring one-on-one coaching and action learning projects. How these initiatives align with the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion mission, ensuring equal opportunities for leaders from diverse backgrounds. The importance of assessing program impact, leveraging assessment tools, and co-creating with partners to tailor leadership programs to business needs.Jennifer's unique career journey and valuable advice for those looking to thrive in talent development.Jennifer is passionate about helping others be their best. For almost 25 years leaders at all levels have appreciated her candor & humor coupled with practical strategies for the care & feeding of other humans (you know, leadership). Jennifer pulls from a range of leadership concepts to create experiences to help teams deliver on their goals. It's been said Jennifer is allergic to inauthenticity. Jennifer earned a BS in Apparel Merchandising from Indiana University. That's right, the very common leadership development educational background of apparel and retail planning.Jennifer started her career with Target Corporation after attending in-person interviews. In January. In Minneapolis. During her tenure with Target she was asked to join the training team in support of the business analyst training program. It was in that role that she realized she is at her best when she is “business adjacent”- meaning enabling the people and teams delivering the profit. In 2012 she returned to Indiana and joined Roche Diagnostics.Over the next 8 years in leadership development and organizational development roles, Jennifer created a new leader program called Jumpstart, built a college grad new hire rotational program from scratch, and dove head first into the roll out of the Leadership Circle Profile 360 from The Full Circle Group. In mid-2020 Jennifer joined the leadership development team at Elevance Health (formerly known as Anthem) to help shape a reimagined leadership development portfolio. Over the last 18 months Jennifer has focused almost solely on the creation of two new high potential development programs, one for manager level leaders and one for those on an executive track. She is also a big believer in the concepts around Strengths Finder from Gallup (Communication, Individualization, Woo, Activator, Significance) and Multipliers from The Wiseman Group (Idea Guy!).She also was named Most Improved Handwriting in 1988 from Klondike Elementary School. Coming to work is a welcome respite for Jennifer who spends her personal time meeting the demands of an opinionated almost 7 year old daughter, Davis, & super needy dog, Holly. Occasionally Jennifer manages to convince herself to jump on her Peloton bike, but usually rewatching The West Wing wins out.Connect with Andy Storch:WebsiteLinkedInJoin us in the Talent Development Think Tank Community!Join us at the Talent Development Think Tank...

Larry McAlister is big on leveraging technology to hire and develop the best people and says we are in the Golden Age of HR technology with AI and augmented reality. Larry McAlister joined the Talent Development Think Tank community to answer questions surrounding technology and share his thoughts on what's going on with HR technology. He also shared his approach to evaluating different technology partners and vendors. In this interview, you'll hear: Why AI and machine learning have led to the Golden Age of technology for HR and how it's changing the landscape of HR. The process Larry McAlister and his team used for choosing his company's technology vendors. How he's using the data to influence his organization's talent strategy. The size of his company and how the use of this technology affected human capital talent management needs. The effect AI can have on “the last mile” of meaningful conversations with people. Larry McAlister's approach to HR and how it affected the culture of NetApp when he took over Talent Enablement. How he's integrating the different systems he's using and why they successfully work well together. What he does to address mixed messages and stay aligned when coaching is individualized. The three things Larry McAlister asks before new technology is implemented in his organization. His take on the employee experience on the front end and creating a seamless experience with technology. How L&D ties into talent enablement and ongoing learning. Whether L&D are advising others' on their careers or we're navigating our own, it's useful to acknowledge how careers are changing and how societal shifts mean we need to shift our approaches to progressing our careers. In this episode, we explore current thinking and practice for post-COVID times. KEY TAKEAWAYS The COVID situation has demonstrated the importance of being ready for change and challenges. Everyone needs to become a continuous learner and embrace the growth mindset, so they can quickly adapt. There is no such thing as failure. Regardless of what happens, you are still learning. The job market is constantly evolving, so you must too. People love helping friends, so there is no need to try to do everything on your own. Work out what you like and what you are good at. Create a vision for yourself. As you go through life your why will change. Recognise this and adjust your goals to accommodate that fact, a lot of people forget to do that. Build your personal brand (reputation). In a gig economy, this is especially important. Understand that everything happens for you, not to you. In the podcast, Andy explains what that means and how it radically improves your mindset. The opportunities we have now are amazing. The fact you can work anywhere opens up all kinds of possibilities. You've got to be the one to take the initiative and act. BEST MOMENTS 'We can all do things to prepare ourselves for major challenges and opportunities.' 'Invest time in learning, growing, networking and connecting with others.' 'When we focus on gratitude, we choose to be happy.' 'There is no better time to truly take ownership of your career than right now. The opportunities are amazing.' The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant talent management challenges, including hiring freezes and layoffs, a sudden shift to remote work, and increased employee stress and burnout. This week, we welcome Megan Bickle, Head of Talent and Performance Management at Dropbox. We discuss how organizations can rethink how work gets done, navigate burnout, and ultimately support employees during these challenging times and in the transition to what will hopefully be less challenging times! Megan joins us with over a decade of talent experience, focused on leveraging people analytics within talent management strategy, leadership development, designing culture, HR technology, and talent assessments. She has held roles at Ubisoft, GE Digital, and Electronic Arts and is passionate about shaping an organization's culture through talent and organizational development initiatives. Tuning in, you'll hear Megan emphasize the double-edged sword of challenge and opportunity that companies are facing in their transition to the ‘new normal' and what they can do to adapt to and support employees in an increasingly virtual work environment. Make sure not to miss this stimulating conversation! Key Points From This Episode: Megan shares how she found her way onto her career path and organizational development. How the technology companies she has worked for have approached employee experience differently to more traditional organizations. Defining what employee experience should be by focusing on an employee's lifecycle. The greatest challenges facing employers during COVID, including navigating and preventing employee burnout. Welcoming employees back to the office now that vaccination programs have started. Why not having a playbook is both an opportunity and a challenge. Megan borrows the phrase ‘retention cliff' to reflect on employee retention during COVID. The benefits for companies of tapping into different markets to source great talent. How companies are leveraging resources like Modern Health, providing employees access to coaching, and monthly wellness days. Find out how training has changed to adapt to a more virtual work environment. Megan's predictions for how the idea of work will evolve over the next 24 months. Where companies are falling short, like not ensuring HR is a critical part of future strategy. While there are numerous opportunities to exploit, it also takes a lot of work. The resources Megan recommends: Talent Development Think Tank and Microsoft's People Analytics data. Her advice for her former self: find a business coach!

“Wildfires. Tons of them... all over Sonoma County... I think we are going to have to cancel (the conference - Talent Development Think Tank).” Andy said in November... with far less panic than I would have. In the next couple of weeks, I watched him and Bennett calmly cancel and postpone their high-end talent development and HR conference they had been planning all year, that had been highlighted as one of the top entrepreneurship events to attend in 2019 in Entrepreneur Mag and Forbes, and that I was literally already packing for! I was going to be the social media strategist for the entire week's event. I was in London with Andy at Chris Ducker's Youpreneur.com conference (another one of my favorites) a few weeks later and Andy was stepping away quietly from our group to make phone calls to re-arrange the new iteration of the event, again without drama, and again with this intense sense of positivity and calm. I just watch this guy with admiration. To say I was impressed would be an understatement. Fast forward a few more months to the event. (They postponed from November to January) and I can honestly say it's one of the most well-done events I've ever been to, let alone worked with, and I was like.... how is this possible? You'll find out how Andy and Bennett got through wildfires, evacuations, illness, and a number of other catastrophic happenings to pull off one of the nicest events I've ever been to. Today I want to talk about the importance of connecting to a purpose or vision to motivate you to get the hard work done. I also want to share my vision for where things are going with the Talent Development Think Tank (our conference in November).
Today our expert guest is Andy Storch, a talent development consultant, coach, connector, speaker, and host of two world-renowned podcasts: The Talent Development Hot Seat and The Andy Storch Show. Andy has been committed to getting people inspired to live their best life, but he didn't always know that growing up. He grew up not really knowing where he was going through high school, he just knew that he wanted to get into college and get a good job, and he's been figuring it out as he went. He first got into personal development around 3 years ago, when he heard Hal Elrod on a podcast, and that launched him into a journey of personal development and investing into his own development and learning. Personal development is investing in yourself and learning how to get better, but most big companies have departments responsible for talent development, helping employees to get better at their job through technical or soft skills. We're starting to see some major shifts in the way people think about work. People want to connect more with a purpose in their job and they want to know where they are going with their careers. We are seeing a big push in the “gig economy,” where people are contracted to do work for other companies. This doesn't necessarily mean everyone is going to end up being an Uber driver, but there will be a focus on more project-based work instead of hiring for one specific role. As the future of work changes, everyone is going to have to start paying more attention to their personal brand. That phrase can turn people off sometimes, but it's really just another way of saying you need to control your reputation. Here are some ways you can shape your personal brand: People have thoughts about you, whether you are trying to control it or not. Be intentional about the things you are known for and showcasing your strengths. Connect with the people who are doing the things that you want to be doing. Leveraging social media to share and build your brand, even just sharing articles that are relevant and add value to others. Andy's two podcasts are both motivated by helping people in talent and personal development. Fear holds so many people back, and The Andy Storch Show is all about helping people get over that fear and follow their dreams. And The Talent Development Hot Seat podcast is for anyone interested in corporate talent development, developing people, and becoming a better manager. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Take full responsibility for everything going on in your life. If there are some things you want to get better at, things where you could or should be spending more time, think about what your priorities are, try to align those with the way you are living your schedule, and take full responsibility for everything going on in your life. Don't worry about what other people are doing. Don't be a victim to what society is doing or telling you. Take full responsibility. Live life intentionally. Set big goals, connect with your purpose, and go out and have a great life.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster.
