Kris chats with B.P. Sweany about his novel The Sword and the Sophomore, plus an excerpt read by Tami Stronach! About the book... Arlynn Rosemary Banson is an atypical sixteen-year-old—the cool, popular outsider, effortlessly straddling the line between divas and dorks. Her forever young mother, Jennifer, is dedicated to making her life awkward by trying to be her friend. Her father, Alan, is a workaholic history professor who barely acknowledges his family's existence. Her boyfriend, Benz, the quarterback and homecoming king, has just broken up with her, while her best friend, Joslin, bears reluctant witness to Rosemary's romantic drama. But nothing prepares any of them for a Welsh foreign exchange student named Emrys Balin. Emrys looks like a teenager, but he seems to act much, much older. HAPPY HOUR FLIX is a podcast all about the movies you love. A nostalgic look at what we grew up watching and how they still impact us today.Today we jump back to one what is quickly becoming one of our favorite years to review movies, 1984....with movies such as the top-grossers Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose, Beverly Hill Cop, Star Trek III, as well as The Terminator, Amadeus, Nightmare on Elm Street, This is Spinal Tap, Starman, and two we've talked about before, Gremlins and the Last Starfighter, The Never Ending Story is in good company. And our special guest is the man behind the work you hear every week, the Wizard of Oz himself, partner in crime, writer and producer extraordinaire, James Allerdyce. And just like the Wizard he knows just about everything about this movie, sharing a ton of personal insight during the very spirited and imaginative conversation. And of course, a thanks to our good friends over at Misguided Spirits, today's cocktail comes over from Jake's Dilemma 430 Amsterdam Ave, one of the best local spots on the Upper West Side for so long, mixed courtesy of our friend and bartender, PAIGE CORWIN. Also a sick RB singer by the way. With a new single out “Unlearn how to Love You.” You know all the amazing clouds and colors we see in the opening credits? That's the inspiration for today's drink: THE NOTHING SUNRISE1 part Whiskey1 parts blood orange oj2 part oj1/2 part grenadine Orange wheel Build in order over ice in a highball. Grenadine float. Garnish with an orange wheel.Okay back to the movie. Come with us as we explore the setting of Fantasia, the incredible characters, phenomenal performances, the meta upon meta themes that still blow our mind today, and the legendary music and score that, admit it, when you hear it you know exactly where you are. One of the most imaginative movies of the 80's it's approach to grief, loss, hope and fear there is so much to explore. From urban legends about Artax to truly terrifying experiences of Atreyu. There is so much to unpack in this movie, we literally had to cut ourselves off...so come with us as we stretch the world of Fantasia back over the Nothing and ask two of the most important questions of all our discussions: how truly involved was the otherwise never mentioned Steven Spielberg, and does the movie hold up?Now pour that cocktail and enjoy with us!A quick reminder, no matter where you are listening to us, if you could rate us and drop us a review on Apple Podcasts, we'd be so grateful - it really helps us spread the good vibes. Thank you!HAPPY HOUR FLIX is produced by James Allerdyce and Lori Kay, and hosted by Steven Pierce and Matt Mundy.Main Title is by Johnny Mineo.Happy Hour Flix | Movies You Love
Pufnstuf (also known as Pufnstuf Zaps the World) is a 1970 American comedy fantasy musical film produced by Sid and Marty Krofft Enterprises and released by Universal Pictures. It is based on the children's television series H.R. Pufnstuf, a show that features a cast of puppets on a "living island." The NeverEnding Story is a 1984 fantasy film co-written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen (in his first English-language film), and based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler, and stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn, with Alan Oppenheimer providing the voices of Falkor and Gmork (as well as other characters). It follows a boy who finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping the Nothing, a dark force, from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantasia. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. It was the first in The NeverEnding Story film series. It adapts only the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second half of the book was subsequently used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot not based on the book. Steal the most unwieldy leather-bound tome you can find from your mysterious neighborhood bookseller and hide in your school's spooky attic as we fly off into a serious childhood touchstone, 1984's The NeverEnding Story. Is the raw egg swilling dad in this a secret alcoholic? Do we all have deep deep horse girl feelings? Why does this movie swing between scaring the crap out of kids, and making them bawl in utter grief? And for all the great puppetry in this—hello Falkor, you amazing fantasy steed—why does the evil Nothing wolf look like a Chuck E. Cheese side character? We're sure the answers will come from this heartrendingly plaintive child ruler named after our hippie mom.

Well, long time no see, darlings! Apologies for our long hiatus but, ya know, s**t happens. Back just in time for Halloween, this month we are watching the 80s comedy/horror classic Ghostbusters! Dan is...lukewarm on this movie. So we're gonna hopefully change his mind! When they lose their funding from Columbia University, paranormal research scientists Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) decide to go into business as paranormal pest control. But when they are tasked with investigating the haunting of cellist Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) apartment, they find themselves tasked with an even greater challenge...saving the world! Also featuring the immense talents of Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Slimer the hungry ghost! Chrysten of course grew up with this movie and its sequel in constant rotation on her TV. Dan, not so much. Will bustin' make Dan feel good? Or will he roast it like a Stay Puft marshmallow man? Join us and find out! Btw...Here's the link to the ruined painting mentioned in the episode. This quote from their website sums up what they are all about 'Paper Canoe creates stories that make kids feel like grown ups and make grown ups feel like kids.' Do you think that Tami looks familiar? Well, she just might if you've seen the Never Ending Story where she played the role of the Child-like Empress! I also caught up with Uncle D who tells me all about how he's going to spend his saturday. Driving his "dog baby" to Louisville! That doesn't sound funny, but it is! The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Tami Stronach of The Never Ending Story. Tami Stronach remembers being a Child-like Empress.... The Child-like Empress from "Never-Ending Story" is back! Tami Stronach, 30 years on, is busy putting together a new album and show for families and children. Thirty years ago, we fell in love with her Child-like Empress when she beckoned Bastian to call her name. Now, the star of the 80s hit is back – ready to invade both the film and music world with her new family label and a Luck Dragon-sized load of exciting new projects. Directed by Wolfgang Peterson, "The Never-Ending Story" was a West-German produced English-language film that, at the time, was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. Never-Ending Story, which won several awards over 1984 and 1985, was a global hit, snaring US$100 million worldwide against a production budget of US$27 million. The movie, which catapulted Stronach to stardom, has been a huge inspiration in pop culture and is just as popular today as it was when it was first released. After a couple of decades of making dance and theater in NYC, Tami has now turned her attention to laying the foundation for a content shop that makes 'family friendly' work – not unlike "Never-Ending Story". The brand is Called Paper Canoe Company, which she founded with husband, Greg.
Live from GTA Comic Con, It's Tami Stronach! Known for her iconic role in The Neverending Story as the Childlike Empress, we discuss how the film was so iconic growing up, how she got involved with the project, how it helped shaped/set the bar for childrens films, Stranger things and more!
Athough it's been over 30 years, Tami Stronach will probably never be able to go through an interview without mention of her role as the "Childlike Empress" in Wolfgang Petersen's 1984 fantasy film, The NeverEnding Story.
A strange and exciting German-made fantasy film called "The Neverending Story" hit theaters in 1984. Before long it had pulled in $100 million and over the last 33 years it has become known as one of the all-time classic children's movies. People like me grew up on this film and we still can't figure out why in the heck they had to show that horse dying!!!! My guest on this episode is Tami Storach who played the Childlike Empress in the film. We talk about how this project entered her life, we get some behind the scenes stories, we find out how it was for her to then go back to normal school as a famous actress and more. We find out what's kept her busy over the last three decades and why she backed away from the Hollywood scene shortly after her iconic role. We get into some movie trivia having to do with this film as well. Visit Tami's latest projects here: http://www.papercanoecompany.com www.facebook.com/oddpodcast www.twitter.com/odd_podcast

Established Curvists and new listeners alike: your host and producer shares a message of the importance of doing what you dream on this episode of Curve the Cube! People get taken off their course in life for all sorts of reasons. But, whether as a hobby, a part-time gig, or as a full-time thing, doing what you love is simply vital to one's spirit, and we can't allow ourselves to forget that. I mean, the alternative is to live every day in black-and-white, instead of the vibrant color that could await you. And, since we all only get one walk through this life on Earth, we shouldn't waste it, right? In this podcast, I discuss not only the importance of feeding your soul with what you love, but to do so smartly and with measured risk, if, like me and some other curvists, your goal is to make a living off of your dream and your dream alone. And, I share what pursuing my own dream has meant in my life: the opportunities I've had come my way, the people I have met, and the conversations with guests that have really touched my life. None of that would have happened had I never stepped out and pursued my dream. The road hasn't always been easy, and I share some of the particular difficulties and challenges I have faced. Pursuing your dream, quite simply, is really, really hard. But, at the end of the day, when you are doing what you love, every bead of sweat and lost hour of sleep is completely worth it!! "When you're not practicing those things that are really authentic to you and you're just giving all of your time to these other things that are pulling you off of your path and the person that's aching to be you, then you have to fill the void with a lot of junk food for the soul." ~ Tami Stronach from episode #100 and star of The Neverending Story This episode of Curve the Cube is sponsored by Big Brain 2: No Hard Feelings tattoo shop! If you're anywhere NEAR as big of a fan as I am of my FAVORITE movie of all time, The Neverending Story, then you will LOVE hearing me chat with Tami Stronach. (I mean, it's not every day you get to talk to a childlike empress!) And, it’s not every day you get to talk to a star you’ve admired for 30+ years on your 100th episode. I was absolutely beside myself. And, what a wonderful conversation we had! Tami is as equally driven as I am to spread the message of the importance of doing what you dream. In this podcast, we explore how the film for each of us (her as a participant and me as a spectator) has influenced our lives and encouraged us to do just that. She was absolutely delightful and just a pure joy to talk to. This podcast came about following an exchange she and I had on Twitter after I took my son to a special screening of The Neverending Story. It was a magical experience for me to see it on the big screen for the first time, to be able to pass on the hope of the film to my son, and to then have that experience connect me with Tami. It was so amazing, and I hope it’s the first of many great conversations with her!! Tami has since spent her life in the love of dance with her studio and production company, Tami Stronach Dance, in which she puts together very expressive and beautiful performances. She and her family have also started the Paper Canoe Company, in which they focus on media for young children. They have their first album coming out soon; so, be sure to look out or that!!
