Windrush Farm Therapeutic Riding Center' Seeks Volunteer Horse Handlers and Side Walkers

The holiday season provides many opportunities to help others and, at the Windrush Farm, that includes helping people and horses. The Windrush Farm Therapeutic Riding Center's Executive Director Janet Nittmann, a recent guest on WHAV's morning program, said the North Andover-Boxford line center has a need for more “horse handlers.”“These are people who lead the horse when it's necessary, and many times it is necessary to help the rider until they become more independent. Our goal is to teach them to become more independent riders,” she said.Nittman says there is also a need for side walkers. Many of the farm's clients appreciate the side walkers, because they help them with their balance while riding.“We do have people who have multiple sclerosis or have had a stroke and they really appreciate the support of the side walkers. We have wonderful volunteers who have been coming to the farm for years and they form a team with the rider, and usually their favorite horse and they all work together to this very enriching experience,” she said.Nittmann says the Windrush Farm Therapeutic Riding Center has about 140 clients, with most of them riding about once a week. There is a volunteer staff, numbering around 100, and they are always looking for more people to donate time.“Side walkers who help the rider stay in the saddle in the nice position, help with their riding skills. They do not need horse experience and they are helping the rider. Then, we need horse handlers. Those people do need horse experience and they are the people who lead the horse. So, two completely different roles. And, we also have grounds projects. We do have people coming from corporations and local schools and community groups to help work on the farm because we have 38 acres and anybody who has a backyard knows that there's always work to do, there's always things to do at Windrush,” she explained.Windrush Farm, in North Andover, provides equine-assisted services for children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional challenges. It is one of the oldest, leading and largest therapeutic riding centers in the United States. It is also accredited as a Premier Center by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. A lot has been said about the benefits of therapy work with equines. They help us immensely. Clients with mental and physical challenges have been gravitating to equine programs for years. Therapeutic riding centers have increasing been supported by the mainstream, including insurance companies and generous donors.  PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) has grown to a community of nearly 5,000 certified instructors and 900 member centers. It's great stuff! But what about the horses? What mental and physical compromises do they make as they support these clients?  We talk with Central Kentucky Riding for Hope's Toby Cross as well as Josh McElroy to learn more about horses in these programs, their well-being, and safe guards that can ensure their healthy lives.  With thanks to Lucerne Farms Forage Feeds and Pharm Aloe Equine, as well as additional thanks to Patagonia WorkWear, Kate's Real Food, and Redmond Equine.

Today Coffee Hour at The Commons is on the road again, in Bristol, at Shepard Meadows Therapeutic Riding Center. It’s on land donated to the Episcopal Church in Connecticut to be used for ministry, which is an expression of God’s love, and that’s certainly what’s going on here. The vision for the use of the property and some of its buildings for a therapeutic riding center started in 2004 and the center officially opened a year later with two horses and a pilot program for three children with special needs.   Today it is a premiere accredited center, one of six in the state, accredited by PATH International, the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. It has seven horses in its herd, lots of volunteers, and a staff of five. Today we’ll be talking with its executive director, Shelly Whitlock-Pope, who’s also a PATH-certified instructor, and Dave Demarais, a long-time volunteer with the center, Vice-President of its Board of Directors, formerly on the staff of ECCT for property management. That was after retiring from serving as the Deputy Fire Chief of West Hartford. (Here’s a link to a story about Dave from when he retired from ECCT staff.)   Shelly was appointed to her position last August. She has degrees in health administration, elementary education, educational leadership, and administration and policy; a background in healthcare, finance, education, and programming, and has worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the NYC Department of Education, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding and Manhattanville College. In addition to being a PATH-certified therapeutic riding instructor, she is also an equine specialist in mental health and learning, a mentor and site evaluator, and Special Olympics Equestrian Coach. She was trained and rode English for years and even patrolled NYC’s Central Park with the Mounted Auxiliary but says her true loves are riding trails Western, and her two American Quarter horses.

026 Kim Kline–Saddle Up! Volunteering with Horses As the Volunteer Services Director since 2007, Kim Kline has been helping nearly 500 people a year provide various riding programs to over 145 children and youth per week. Kim says, “Saddle Up! could not do what it does without lots of volunteers.” Each of those riders need from one to three volunteers every time they are at Saddle Up! Saddle Up!’s mission is to provide children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities with horses. Founded in 1990 and incorporated in 1991, Saddle Up! is Middle Tennessee’s oldest and largest recreational therapeutic riding program, and it is the only one exclusively serving children and youth with disabilities. The organization operates year-round on their 34-acre, farm near Franklin, Tennessee. For many of the riders, Saddle Up! is one of the few, if not the only, recreational programs available to them. In this interview Kim introduces several of the many volunteer opportunities available at Saddle Up!, talks about what these volunteers do, and proudly presents the training programs available. With horseback riding lessons and programs, including Therapeutic Riding, Equine Assisted Learning, and Equestrian Club, as well as Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy, Saddle Up! needs volunteers with a wide range of skills and interests. In her words, “You don’t have to know anything about horses or children to volunteer at Saddle Up!. We’ll give you enough information and enough practice to be safe and effective around horses and children.” What you can do as a volunteer ranges from helping as the person leading the horse or assisting the rider (as a sidewalker) to mucking stalls, mowing pastures, or providing office or fundraising assistance. Check out the volunteer page at www.saddleupnashville.org or email Kim (kkline@saddleupnashville.org) to discuss your interest. Dueker Ranch Horse Therapy Dennis Dueker once thought giving pony rides to disable children was a waste of time.  Then, he got to see the healing power of horses first hand.  It not only changed his mind, it motivated him to establish Dueker Ranch Horse Therapy.  The story began shortly after Dennis retired from General Motors when he was asked by a friend to volunteer at a horse therapy facility in California.  When the Dueker family moved to Arizona, Dennis saw a golden opportunity to establish a horse therapy in his hometown of Payson. Wanting to do it right, Dennis studied and got his accreditation from PATH Intl, the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship.  He also found Horses Help, a horse therapy center in Phoenix where he could volunteer. Through his volunteer work, Dennis noticed that many families in need could not afford the benefits of horse therapy.  He set up Dueker Ranch as a 501c3 charity and provides his horse therapy for free. Stoked to be speaking today with Sarah Bronson, Executive Director of Riding to the Top, a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding center in Windham, Maine. Riding to the Top has been a Premier Accredited Center by PATH International (the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) since 2000, and is where my little (Roman) cowboy has been riding for years. We chat about the human-horse connection, what sort of activities they focus on, and why running the farm is like orchestrating a symphony with multiple moving parts.
