In this episode of the Suite Spot, we explore the importance of post-stay surveys for hotels. Host Ryan Embree is joined by Product Director and head of Travel Media Group’s reputation solutions, Patrick O’Brien, to discuss why the feedback uncovered in these surveys is critical to a hotel’s success. Patrick and Ryan start the episode by explaining the difference between guest reviews and guest surveys. They walk through each question included in Travel Media Group’s post-stay survey and what insights the property can gain from the guest’s feedback. Finally, Patrick shares some creative ideas for other questions that our partners have included in their hotels' post-stay surveys. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot where hoteliers check in and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone, and welcome to the Suite Spot. This is your host Ryan Embree. We've got a jam packed episode for you today. I am very excited about it. I'm very excited about our guest. He is our Product Director at Travel Media Group and head of our reputation solutions, Patrick O'Brien. Patrick, welcome back to the Suite Spot. Patrick O'Brien: Well, thank you very much for having me. Ryan Embree: And this episode is going to be all about guest surveys - why they're critical and essential to your hotel's success, how we can leverage our guest's responses to these surveys, and we're even going to include some of the questions from our very own Travel Media Group post-stay survey that we provide for our hotel partners. So let's go ahead and get started Patrick. We know that guest surveys is a major part of Travel Media Group's reputation management solution, I want to start today's episode, because when I say guest surveys, there's a pretty distinct difference there between a guest survey and a guest review. Can you first explain that? And then we'll get into the guest surveys a little bit. Patrick O'Brien: Sure, so Ryan, a guest review really will be any feedback left publicly online on sites like Google, TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, etc, so while some could argue that not all public feedback is really fair or even sometimes legitimate, it is typically one of the most used resources that prospective travelers will turn to before making a booking decision, so it really kind of impacts the prospective traveler view of your hotel. And while the hotel can typically take part in that conversation via review responses, they don't have any influence necessarily on whether or not that conversation and feedback takes place. Surveys, on the other hand are typically feedback solicited directly from a hotel's guests, with the goal to provide the hotel insights into what is working and what is not, but really keeping that conversation one-to-one and offline. So you really can think of, you know, the online reviews being that tool that prospective guests are using to look at your hotel, and the online surveys, really being a tool kept internally to help the hotel understand what's going on at their business, but just because the surveys are kept offline, it doesn't mean that someone who fills out a survey can't then go back and leave a review as well. So that can be really good, if the feedback in the survey was positive, it may not be quite as good if the feedback was negative. Ryan Embree: Yeah, I feel like the hotel industry has gone through this love-hate relationship with any type o...

Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot where hoteliers check-in and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone, welcome to another episode of the Suite Spot. This is your host Ryan Embree, we have a very special episode for you today, been looking forward to this episode for a very long time. It's actually one of the most popular episodes that we've done since we've started the Suite Spot and with me today is our special guest, Product Director at Travel Media Group, Patrick O'Brien. Patrick, welcome back to the Suite Spot. Patrick O'Brien: Thank you very much for having me glad to be here. Ryan Embree: Yeah and we're excited today because Patrick and I, what we're doing, is that we are going to look at the top five sentiment tags of 2020. So it's been an absolutely crazy year: COVID-19, election year, all these significant things going on in our industry, yet customers still leaving reviews. And at Travel Media Group, obviously we have our Respond and Resolve solution, which responds to reviews - but we don't necessarily just respond. Patrick, your team actually goes in and provides insights to hoteliers. Before we get started, could you explain just a little bit behind what this sentiment analysis is and how your team actually pulls that out of the guest feedback? Patrick O'Brien: So, you know, with every review that comes in our team is obviously reading the review in advance so that we can respond to it, but we're actually going through and looking at various elements within the review and we score those based on, you know, positive, negative and neutral sentiment. And where it's a little bit different, sometimes I think there's some AI engines out there that do it and sometimes they basically do it based off of the star rating of the review, and I think that's fast and efficient. However, what it misses is the ability to really identify when maybe negative sentiment is left within the positive review or there are positive attributes to a negative review. And having, you know, human interaction within there, we're able to sort of elicit those meanings a bit more accurately in the review so that we can really understand, you know, not every positive review is, you know, all roses and not every negative review is all bad. So we can start to dissect when things are maybe not good with a specific experience, what elements were things that the hotel could market on capitalize on, and you know, what elements do they need to work better at improving? So we really go in and each review is hand scored by someone on our team. Ryan Embree: And it's fascinating to take a look at all of that data, all that sentiment and analytics, put together like something we're going to do today - but just to put in perspective Patrick, how many reviews is your team responding to? Let's just talk about reviews first. Patrick O'Brien: Sure yeah. So, you know, this year,

Before his work began at Genomind, O'Brien founded Key BioPharma Partners, LLC, a private consulting firm focused on biopharma, and he served as president and CEO of multiple influential pharmaceutical and bioscience companies.  Podcast Points: How can genetic testing help improve drug treatment outcomes for mental health patients? How many people suffer from mental health issues over their lifetime? Do some drugs work better than others for a particular patient?  O'Brien discusses the background of Genomind, and why the company was created. He talks about the company's founder, Dr. Ronald Dozoretz, MD, who sadly passed away recently due to Covid-19. Dr. Dozoretz's career as a psychiatrist focused on building mental health centers, working to improve patient outcomes, and decrease costs. O'Brien states that according to the CDC, by the end of the decade, depression will be the largest healthcare cost. Genomind seeks to bring real solutions to mental health care. As O'Brien explains, as many as 50% of the total population will need mental health services at some point in their lives. Genomind has developed a system of testing that can eliminate the trial and error of care, by providing genetic testing of 24 different genes which can elucidate which drugs are suitable for the individual and which will be ineffective, how they will metabolize a type of drug, and how that drug will be distributed throughout their body, etc. This valuable information can assist health care practitioners to prescribe medications that will work for their patients, and eliminate the long journey of trial and error that many patients go through en route to finding a successful path to treatment through medication.  The Genomind CEO talks about the ways they have adapted their company's models to facilitate the current Covid-19 period. He discusses particular drugs and drug profiles, detailing therapy and treatment. O'Brien explains that many patients may be currently taking drugs that will simply never work for them, but genetic testing will help correct this. Wrapping up, O'Brien provides an overview of new emerging data in his field, and how drugs are incorporated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), etc., and he talks about his personal story with his son that motivated him to work with Genomind helping others improve their lives.

Ryan and Patrick explain how to achieve both short- and long-term reputation goals for your hotel. Patrick walks us through how to rise into the top 10, top 5, and eventually top 3 of your market on TripAdvisor. He also shares best practices on how to sustain reputation excellence once your hotel is at the top of your city rank. Ryan and Patrick also discuss redefining reputation success based on market size. Before republishing quotes, we ask that you reference the audio. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot where hoteliers check in and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree. Today, we've got a great episode for you today. Some of our most popular episodes and educational content really surrounds TripAdvisor. We know the importance of TripAdvisor and what type of impact that can make on revenue. Your hotel's reputation is one of those things that can really impact a traveler's booking decision. So I feel like the educational content we put out about TripAdvisor, that's why it's so well received. So in tune with that, I have invited in our product director, Patrick O'Brien, who will be joining us - you've been on the Suite Spot a couple times now. Patrick O'Brien: Yes I have, thanks for having me. Ryan Embree: Absolutely, so today we're going to talk about TripAdvisor. You know, we've done a lot of episodes around optimizing your TripAdvisor account and really getting the most out of it. I thought a great idea for an episode today would be really how can make some movement, because that's what we're constantly looking to do, right? Is improve our reputation online, see that city rank go up the ladder, and get into a competitive space where you are at the forefront of a traveler's booking decision and tip the scales in your favor. Let's go ahead and start a hotel that's out there. They're just now getting into TripAdvisor. You know, they've listened to a couple episodes on how to optimize their TripAdvisor, but you know, they haven't really focused on their reputation much, but in 2020 they're looking to really improve their reputation right away. So these hotels in maybe in the bottom 25% of their city, what are a few easy steps that they can do to start seeing improvement right now? Patrick O'Brien: Well, first and foremost, I think, you know, don't throw your hands up in the air and be like, "Okay, we're at the bottom of the pack, there's nothing that we can do." It is simply just about getting more positive reviews. If you are at a 2.5 star rating, every four or five star rating that you get is going to have a significant impact and it's going to have a significant impact fairly quickly. All of that is going to help increase your average because the average really is a kind of a compound equation. So you know the more of those four and five star reviews you can get, you're going to lift that average up pretty quickly. In addition, part of TripAdvisor's city rank algorithm revolves around recency of reviews. So the more recent the review is, the heavier it is weighted. The idea there really being around that this is the experience that a guest coming today would have. So, you know, you'll start to see a faster kinda growth and impact by those more positive reviews. So it is coming up with a strategy to go out and,

I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Welcome to another edition of the Suite Spot, today we have a very special edition which is focused all around review response and with me today I have a very special guest, Mr. Patrick O'Brien, aka Mr. Review Response, he's our product development manager at Travel Media Group and he runs our respond and resolve department. Patrick want to welcome you to the Suite Spot. Patrick O'Brien: Thank you for having me. Ryan Embree: Today, we're going to do something I'm really excited about because Patrick, you and your team have been very hard at work, we're going to get to some numbers here in a second, but we're going to go through the top five sentiment tags that we find in reviews. So just to give our listeners a little bit of a background on the respond and resolve solution, how many reviews does your team respond to a month, right now? Patrick O'Brien: Right now we're probably averaging around 22,000 - 24,000 reviews for hotels each month. They vary from positive to negative across the board. Ryan Embree: 22,000 - 24,000 that isn't an incredible number. So you and your team are extremely busy. You also shared with me before this episode, year to date. So in 2019 we're over 135,000 reviews that your team has responded to. So you guys really are the experts in hotel review response. Now when we talk about tags, can you kind of explain what I mean by a sentiment tags within a review? Patrick O'Brien: When most people look at review response, the idea is I've gotta, you know, follow up with this customer who left me some type of feedback. But I think when you actually look at reviews, they're probably some of the best business intelligence that you can get cause these are people letting you know in high volume what's working at your hotel and what's not working at your hotel, and ideally for what's working at your hotel, what people who are coming to your market and specifically coming to your property are really excited about, what's adding the value to that stay. So we've identified about 45 to 50 different elements and so we look for those in every review. That allows you to take really what is very subjective with a, you know, a review that's been left and quantify it and break it down into what was that review really about? Were they talking positively about the cleanliness of the property, about the sleep quality at the property? Some of the amenities that I offer, did they like them, do they not like them? For me, the sentiment tags and the reporting also can help a hotel really dive into when they are looking to either justify or to make capital investment decisions. You can use that analysis and that data that's collected in all of those reviews to let you know, if I'm going to spend $500,000 to make improvements at my property out of these options, what is it going to give me the best bang for my buck?

In this special edition episode of Suite Spot, we discuss the recent 2018 Phocuswright conference in Los Angeles.  Host Ryan Embree is joined by Patrick O’Brien, product manager and Phocuswright attendee veteran, who gives his take on the innovative technology conference. Hear from Patrick as he talks about the theme of this year’s conference and how it sets the stage for the future of the hotel industry. Learn what industry leaders from companies like Airbnb, TripAdvisor, and Expedia are saying about what they have in store for the future of their companies. This episode is an excellent glimpse of where the hotel industry is headed in 2019 and beyond. Episode Transcript Our podcast is produced as an audio resource. Transcripts are generated using speech recognition software and human editing and may contain errors. Before republishing quotes, we ask that you reference the audio. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot where hoteliers check in and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Ryan Embree: Today we have a very special edition of the Suite Spot. As digital marketing leaders in the industry, it is always our job to make sure that we are at the forefront of all innovations and conferences that are going on around the industry and we have been busy over the past couple of months to give you that insight. Today our episode is going to be focused around Phocuswright Conference, which was in Los Angeles, California at the end of November. I'm here with a guest, Patrick O'Brien. He is our digital product manager. He's been on Suite Spot before, but he is back to give us his insights on the conference, which we both attended. So let me go ahead and first off, welcome Patrick to the show. Welcome. Patrick O'Brien: Thank you very much. Ryan Embree: So I want to first start off uh Phocuswright - this is not your first time going and attending. Um, and really this is a hospitality tech conference, correct? Patrick O'Brien: Yes. Ryan Embree: Like all conferences, every single year they have sort of a common theme that you would find for each year. And I'm curious what you felt was the theme of this year, 2018's, Phocuswright Conference. Patrick O'Brien: Yeah. So I think this is the fifth or sixth year that I have, I've gone to Phocuswright. And there always seems to be some type of new theme in the years past, uh, you know, it's been kind of around mobile and mobile booking and mobile technology around disruption in the sharing economy and what that's going to do to the travel industry. This year, I kind of felt like you had a collective cooling from the travel industry where it's like we've had all this disruption, all of this growth and everything's maturing a little bit more. And you know, you've had the consolidation of all of these OTA sites and the OTA is gobbling up other, other companies and kind of creating this bigger platform. You know, Airbnb is kind of starting to see their growth level out a little bit more. And so it's, it's obviously now, you know, one of the big players in the industry and so now I feel like you had everybody kind of sitting back and looking out and saying, okay, now we have these big companies out there. Um, travel, I think on the whole is, is increasing. What can we do now to continue to build wealth and sort of get a bigger share of the pie. One of the most interesting statistics that I saw year over year and I may get the year wrong, but I think since like 2014 that founding has gone down and funding has gone up. So what that means is that there are less and less startups coming into the industry. But there's more and more money being pumped into the industry. And I think that is kind of a direct result of what we were seeing is: So now you've had all these startups and all of this money go into the industry. They've sort of proven out the ideas that are going to work. Now they're pumping more money into trying to figure ...

This episode is brought to you by Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (until Ty tells me where I can find Blue Blood Brewing Company products in my area). In this episode, we talk about the departure of Patrick O’Brien from the Husker football team after he asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship. That really throws the QB picture into chaos as we had him pegged as the season-opening starter. So where does that leave the QB position and players like Tristan Gebbia, Adrian Martinez, and, dare we say, Noah Vedral? Also, plenty of talk this week on the receiving corps, what could be a bright spot for the Husker offense. Stanley Morgan returns and could easily be Nebraska’s first 1,000-yard receiver. But JD Spielman is a returning freshman All-American, and Tyjon Lindsey is a dynamic playmaker and both figure to be key pieces to the Nebraska offensive unit. And we’re trying to get Hoss a girlfriend, gosh darnit! So if you like long walks on the beach, a glass of moscato once a year, dogs, and a fella who can squat over 300 pounds, reach out via the social media access points below. Well, Husker fans got some news Thursday that may or may not have been expected. To Husker Nation: Thank You! pic.twitter.com/1MQYtpMusL — Tanner Lee (@TannerLee13_) December 28, 2017 Of course, that’s no longer news to you. But it did mean fodder for the conversation on this week’s episode of the Five Heart Podcast. What are Tanner’s chances of being drafted, and where does that leave the Huskers’ depth chart with Patrick O’Brien and Tristan Gebbia in Lincoln and now Adrian Martinez headed to the Great Cornhusker State. Also, what can former Husker player and new Offensive Line Coach Greg Austin do to rebuild the much-maligned offensive line, and how will he utilize the players at his disposal to put the best group together? There’s also some NFL talk as the League approaches the playoffs. And Greg goes on an anti-Patriots diatribe that should make most fans happy (assuming you aren’t a Patriots fan…but how can you be a Patriots fan and also have a soul?). And at the end, just before signing off…HUSKER WRESTLING MAKES AN APPEARANCE! Is it worth it to stick around for that blurb? Maybe not. But hey…it’s wrestling. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts! Join Faldor (Martin from Extended Edition podcast) as he joins me again for another go at the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise! It's the heartwarming tale of a band of plucky pirates, most of whom were dead at least once before, who rescue their friend from death and but can't save certain other people for some reason. A bunch of other stuff happens that is hard to remember or explain, most of which is people betraying each other, and Keira Knightly has several costume changes, and Pintel and Ragetti seriously get on my nerves. We examine the tone and motivations, try to figure out who the main character is, analyze the story as a long-form romance, and try to decide what to cut out. We discuss Johnny Depp's portrayal and Keith Richards' cameo. We wander off on a couple of tangents about Lord Nelson, the Patrick O'Brien novels, Treasure Island, and British television actors' pay.

Gold Class: You wouldn’t have guessed that Gold Class only formed in early 2014, their debut 7” ‘Michael’ feels more like a band that has been tightening up their craft for years. It’s probably got something to do with members of Bone and Nth Wheel being involved – those groups in themselves have shown proficiency for towing the line between construction and upheaval. Gold Class play misanthropic baritone-led post-punk, but, what would usually sound languid and murky is instead much more energetic and melodic. The film-clip for the single is a simple and colourful video that really compliments the vibrancy that the group can achieve. Recorded by Dusty Anastassiou. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Catfish, Melbourne. 10 October 2014. Bearded Iris: Bearded Iris started as a solo project by Melbourne artist Ora Ni aka Jane, and has since morphed into a supergroup comprising of members from a wide variety of bands and artists in the Melbourne underground scene. Sharing lead vocals is visual artist Carly Housiaux, on synth is Tim Wood from Encounter Group, Allanah Stewart of Lime Works on the guitar, Josh Jenkins of Satanic Rockers on drums and Tania Price rounds out the sextet on bass. Usually they also have Patrick O’Brien of Mad Nanna fame on the guitar as well, but he’s a busy in demand type of guy and couldn’t make the trip up that weekend. In October 2013 they released a tape on Albert’s Basement, a fantastic underground music label from Melbourne that has released music for a lot of the performers in this group. Bearded Iris sound like nothing else – they lie somewhere between new wave and jazz. You could almost imagine a full brass band honking alongside them. Recorded by Steve Palmer. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Beetle Bar, Brisbane. 12 September 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 10 October 2014. Show production and engineering: Josh Watson.
