TV Confidential continues its program-length tribute to Wink Martindale by bringing you an encore presentation of Wink's appearance on our program in December 2018. Topics this segment include how Wink taught himself how to become an announcer when he was a kid by reading ads from Life magazine aloud; the back story of "Deck of Cards," the spoken word recording that Wink first released in 1959 and which has sold than three million copies ever since; the many ways in which providence has played a role in Wink's life; and how Wink learned more about the nuances of hosting a game show from Dan Enright, co-executive producer of Tic Tac Dough, than from anyone else. Wink Martindale passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2025 at age ninety-one.
TVC 688.2: Steve Beverly, retired professor of broadcast journalism at Union University in Jackson, TN (the hometown of Wink Martindale), game show historian, and the host of Steve Beverly's TV Classics, talks to Ed about how Wink never lost sights of his roots in Jackson, TN; how the success of the Martindale version of Tic Tac Dough in the 1970s forever changed the public perception of that particular game show (because the original Tic Tac Dough had been tarnished by the quiz show scandal of the late 1950s); and how Martindale's Tic Tac Dough really took off in syndication in 1979, becoming the No. 1. syndicated game show (after failing on CBS the year before), with the “Ken Jennings-like” success of contestant Thom McKee. Also in this segment: Steve and Ed discuss the new version of Tic Tac Dough, hosted by Brooke Burns, which premiered on Game Show Network on Apr. 14, 2025. Wink Martindale passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 15, 2025 at age ninety-nine. Steve Beverly recently re-aired Wink Comes Home, a 90-minute special that he hosted in November 2007 at Union University in which Wink discussed his life and career and took questions from the studio audience, as part of Steve Beverly's TV Classics. That episode is now available for viewing on demand on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop by going to EPlusTV6.com or, if you have the PBS app, typing in West TN PBS, where you'll find Steve Beverly's TV Classics on the drop-down menu of Local Shows.

In this segment, Steve Beverly, retired professor of broadcast journalism at Union University in Jackson, TN (the hometown of Wink Martindale), game show historian, and the host of Steve Beverly's TV Classics, talks to Ed about Martindale developed his skills as a “quality ad-libber” early in his career by doing play-by-play for high school sports broadcasts; how he was often a de facto producer on the set of his game shows, always adapting to changing conditions in the format of the game (particularly in moments when things when awry); and why, unlike most broadcasters, Martindale was never afraid to take a risk by going to a bigger market. Both players must try to avoid the dragon, who lurks to steal their turns and stands in their path to victory. Break time is over, and the FlopFight resumes! Ed (from the Sponge Awareness Foundation) is back to help us wrap up our tournament of game show hosts (and associated game show weirdos). The players are drawn at random, and the competitions are drawn at random, so anything could happen. Will Bob Barker face Richard Dawson in a Spam-juggling competition? Drew Carey vs. Paul Lynde at Electronic Battleship? Perhaps! Only one game show legend can Showcase Showdown their way to victory, while everyone else is stuck with a copy of the FlopFight home game. And although he already competed in Part 1, we just can't stop talking about Wink Martindale. Some of us are still running from that Tic Tac Dough dragon... Kornflake is back! And Ed, the other half of the Sponge Awareness Foundation, is back too! Because Ed thought we should have a game show-themed FlopFight, and it's not like we had anything better to do! So here we go with another ridiculous tournament, and this time the players are the hosts of classic game shows like Jeopardy and Tic Tac Dough, as well as related game show characters. (Could a Press Your Luck Whammy get to play? Could a Muppet be involved? Can anyone stop Regis?) And because it's a FlopFight, each round involves weird randomly selected competitions like running a marathon or boxing a kangaroo, so anything could happen. (Sure, Vanna White can turn letters, but would she make a good chicken farmer?) This week's winner advances to the final round, unless they get gonged by the Unknown Comic or something. So gather at your backyard Thanksgiving table for pretzels and popcorn and jelly beans and toast, and enjoy our latest FlopFight! It's like a Monty Hall Problem for your soul. We discuss the film's many iterations, possible directors, and might-have-been performances as well as the incredibly deep bench of performers the film ultimately wound up with (including great character actors like David Paymer, Hank Azaria, Griffin Dunne, and even a wonderful turn from director Martin Scorsese). Then we discuss the real story behind the film, and the ways director Robert Redford and screenwriter Paul Attanasio grapple with the quiz show scandal's multifaceted ramifications in the era after the post-war boom. Finally, we discuss the film's legacy, or lack thereof, and why this film may not have found its deserved purchase with viewers in the 90s and why there's still room for it to be reclaimed in 2023. Game show legend Thom McKee joined me to discuss his growing up watching Jeopardy; sitting as a child reading encyclopedias in the bathroom; how his navy training made him quick witted; taking the "general" game show test but wanting Tic Tac Dough because there was no limit; originally taping on weekends; the Navy learning about it and he becomes a celebrity; taping five episodes in a day; getting numbers in the bonus round from his wife, Jenny; always starting in the center; quickness of Wink Martindale; a contestant who introduction made him nervous; topicality of questions; playing trivia weekly now; COVID didn't change his routine; being friends with Mike Post; his dad waiting to meet his future daughter-in-law because the Rockford Files was on; contestants who tied him; one had six ties making the pot the largest in game show history; has the shows on tape but when he's a guest on a TV show he only sees clips of his loss; feeling like Bill Buckner; donated a lot of his winnings to his brother; losing to Eric Krapelian; Eric donated some winnings to Thom's brother; wanting to win but not because opponent made stupid mistakes; one contestant was introduced but never came back to do the show due to nerves; not feigning excitement and being himself; Jenny being brought in for car rounds; two month break was refreshing; landing the 225,000 plane on his aircraft carrier; going on The Merv Griffin Show; Wink misremembering Jenny being pregnant; Wink being friends with Elvis; Chuck Barris; not being overly concerned by Eric Krapelian; feeling fatigued when asked about 10 most populated Japanese cities; only go to take one of twenty vacations (lost all cash value); sold all cars and appliances; playing an Air Force Colonel (turns out he was a Navy Chief Warrant Officer); Wink and the crew thinking of Thom as part of the show; not having to be sequestered and escorted to the bathroom after a while; going into sales after the Navy and settling in real estate; his three children; Jenny wants a grandchild, preferably a granddaughter; Twitter says Top Gun's Goose's look based on Thom; Thom is 66 to 1 odds to take over Jeopardy!; meeting Ken Jennings; being inducted into the Game Show Hall of Fame; inducting Wink the next year; donating solar panels; dinner with Ken Jennings and wife; never studying except one time his wife reads a triva book on the way up and the question appears on that nights show;
This Week on It Was a Thing on TV we talk about the less memorable versions of one of the most popular quiz shows of all-time. One of the most beloved games of the late 70s through the mid-80s was Tic Tac Dough. The show had lives before and after that halcyon period. Unfortunately, it was rigged, hosted by an imbecile, then hosted by a bigger imbecile, and recently went to pilot, but did not get picked up. TVC 586.5: From December 2018: Ed welcomes game show legend Wink Martindale (Gambit, Debt, Tic Tac Dough, Winking at Life, “Deck of Cards”). Known for his long association with Elvis Presley, Wink was there at the very beginning: the night in July 1954 when Memphis, TN radio station WHBQ became the first station to play an Elvis record on the radio. Wink Martindale's spoken word recording “Heavenly Child,” a tribute to Elvis Presley, is available through iTunes and wherever music is sold online. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Wink Martindale was a very close friend of Elvis. They met the very night Sam Phillips walked into that Memphis radio station with “That's All Right Mama” that catapulted Elvis Presley's stardom. Wink tells the story of that incredible night and how Memphis is the true city of rock and roll. Wink is the last survivor of the six people at the radio station that night. Now watch and listen to the rest of the story. Wink Martindale's fascination with radio began during childhood. Classmates may have aspired to being doctors, firemen or policemen. Wink just wanted to be a radio announcer. His former Sunday school teacher managed a 250 Watt radio station back in the day and he gave Wink his first on-air job at $25 a week. His radio dream was fully realized in 1971 when he began a 12 year run as the midday personality on Gene Autry's flagship “Station of the Stars”, KMPC. Along the way there was his teen oriented “Dance Party” from Pacific Ocean Park, a gold record, the narrative “Deck of Cards”, an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, and 21 game shows that Wink either hosted or produced including “Trivial Pursuit”, “Can You Top This”, “High Rollers”, “Debt”, “Gambit”, and the long-running “Tic-Tac-Dough”. Let's welcome the man, the icon, the legend without equal in the history of radio and television, the one and only Wink Martindale!

Out of the park and onto the stage, it’s a new Go Fact Yourself!Wink Martindale is a radio and TV legend. He got his start as a disc jockey in Memphis, Tennessee and eventually became a fixture as a game show host. He’s been the moderator of tons of shows like “Tic-Tac-Dough” and “High Rollers.” He’ll tell us some great stories from his career before settling into a game show role he’s less familiar with: being a contestant. You can find more Wink on his YouTube channel and in his book Winking at Life.Opposite Wink is actor Arden Myrin. She’s practically done it all when it comes to her roles on TV; everything from a guest appearance “Friends” to starring on the Netflix series “Insatiable.” Recently she was featured in the Los Angeles Times not for her career accomplishments, but for her ability to decorate her home on a budget. Arden is the host of “The Bachelor” fan podcast “Will You Accept This Rose?” and is the author of the new book Little Miss Little Compton.Our contestants will answer trivia about killer plants, bespectacled athletes and the law of desserts.What’s the difference: Torte ReformWhat’s the difference between a torte and a tart?What’s the difference between “reformed” and “transformed”?Areas of ExpertiseWink Martindale: radio history, the 1950’s St. Louis Cardinals and Elvis PresleyArden Myrin: the movie Moonstruck, the musical Little Shop of Horrors and the fact that not all cats can be bonded. Wink Martindale's career spans six decades. His first TV series was the WHBQ-TV children's show Wink Martindale of the Mars Patrol. As a Memphis deejay and host of the TV show Teenage Dance Party, he is credited for giving Elvis Presley his first major break. He's best known as a game show host ("Tic Tac Dough", "Trivial Pursuit") and television producer (Vancouver-based "Second Honeymoon"). Wink and I met in Nashville in 2001 at Brenda Lee's induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. When the Red Robinson Show Theatre opened in 2006, Wink and his wife Sandy were honoured guests. That same year he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Wink and Sandy joined us at Vancouver's Pacific National Exhibition in 2008 for our annual Salute to Elvis. The PNE fairgoers appreciated Wink and so do I. He was kind enough to guest on my final radio show on CISL/Vancouver in 2017. He is a very special man. I recently told him "Wink, except for the outfit, you really haven't changed that much since the early days in Memphis." (Photo: Special Collections, University of Memphis Libraries) In this interview, Wink tells Terry where he got his unusual name; the success of "Tic Tac Dough", "Gambit" and other TV game shows; his foray into the restaurant business; why he hasn't pursued an acting career; the resurgence of "standards" on radio and the "Music Of Your Life" format on KMPC as contemporary artists cover the classics; what's new in his career. Recorded in 1984 in Los Angeles.

Sure, you recognize Mom and Dad are palindromes, but did you notice the racecar? It was a Toyota. Yep, that was another one. It could be expanded in context, too: A Toyota. Race fast, safe car. A Toyota. Wow, that was long! And we saw a Jawa sew DNA. Okay, that really didn’t make much sense, but if it was an offworld Jawa, it might explain something about baby Yoda. Since this is the last show before Palindrome Day, shazbazzar and JediShua wanted to remind you that next Sunday is 2020.02.02 (or 02.02.2020). So get busy going backwards and forwards at the same time. Wait, isn’t that what TechnoRetro Dads is all about? In the NEWS Funko Vinyl figures in retro soda cans. Jeremy talks to game show legend Wink Martindale, host of classic game shows like Gambit, High Rollers, Debt and my personal favorite, Tic-Tac-Dough. We cover everything from his start in radio, transition to television, his success in the game show world, and his lifelong friend Elvis Presley! I asked if he ever had the chance, even during show development, to play the Tic-Tac-Dough bonus round to which he said no. I happily changed that statistic and allowed him to play Beat The Dragon for the first time ever. The question is... did he win? Listen and find out for yourself!
Wink Martindale's legendary status as radio and TV host has taken him through many of the biggest phases of pop culture and he reveals his personal stories with Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett, Ed Sullivan and more. Hear from the iconic host of "Tic-Tac-Dough" and how the simplicity of a TV game show has power when applied to other areas of life. His influence has had a stunning ripple effect in Hollywood and beyond and his wife Sandy has been his anchor through the years. Hosted by 9-time Emmy winner David Sams & TV personality Victoria Robinson in for Tim Storey. Photo courtesy WinkMartindale.org.

This week, in a very special post-holiday Flopcast: We celebrate Appreciate a Dragon Day (and have a correction about the Tic Tac Dough dragon); Kornflake and Doornail's Christmas trip to Florida is all too similar to the Rifftrax classic "Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny"; Kevin knows where the Pointer Sisters go for coffee (aren't you impressed?); Christmas dinner at the Red Arrow Diner is weird and bacon-filled; the final Rankin Bass Christmas cartoon (2001's Santa Baby) features a chicken and a lobster (it's a Flopcast miracle); and thanks to Moon Hooch, Kornflake rings in the new year with topless saxophone players. This is a super-quick episode, but you can hear even more of your Flopcast hosts this week on Earth Station One! Episode 248 is ESO's 2014 geek year in review show... and Kornflake is in the Geek Seat.
It's our final Flopcast of 2014, so we're extra goofy and exhausted! This week: National Buffet Day reminds us of yet another creepy tale of Woonsocket; Gunpowder Gelatine has Queen cover songs (but no Flash Gordon); Aquanutz has hair metal cover songs (and a duck); Molly Ringwald has sushi; Kevin So throws it all away, Phil Collins-style; we're strangely obsessed with the dragon on Tic Tac Dough; and of course, we reveal our New Year's resolutions. (Believe it or not, they're sort of ridiculous.)
