Global healing requires a spiritual transformation of every aspect of life. Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun Magazine, author/educator Matthew Fox and Joanna Macy, eco-philosopher and scholar of Buddhism speak of the profound interconnectedness of all life and the experience of joy, courage and community we need to engage in the healing of the world.
Author Rabbi Michael Strassfeld encourages us to reorganize our thinking about—and reengage our lives with—Judaism. Rabbi Michael Strassfeld has served the Jewish community for over five decades, in numerous capacities, including as an educator, writer, editor, rabbi, and community leader. He is the author of Judaism Disrupted, which is being published on the 50th anniversary of his breakthrough best-seller that sold over 300,000 copies, The Jewish Catalog. Rabbi Strassfeld, the son of a Modern Orthodox rabbi, was ordained as a rabbi over 30 years ago by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. - Miként gondolkozik sok palesztin a zsidókról? - Csak a cionistákkal van gondjuk vagy általában a zsidókkal? - Mi az a zsidó ünnep, amit ez a támadás tönkretett? One of the most challenging topics in interfaith settings is Israel/Palestine. How do we begin to address this subject, create space for meaningful dialogue, and take steps towards action? How can those outside of Palestine and Israel better inform ourselves? What is our role? We explore some of these questions, acknowledging the difficulty of even agreeing on a shared view of history, language, and responsibilities. Featuring Faisal Saleh, founder of the Palestine Museum US, and Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun Magazine. Hello and welcome to WGBD “When God is Black and Disabled” a podcast by and with Black women of faith with disabilities, hosted by the Rev. Raedorah C. Stewart. This podcast is a space to amplify the voices and validate the experiences of Black women of faith from various streams of spirituality, in the church, and for the culture. In doing so, we imagine the Imago Dei with disabilities as incarnate and more valuable to humanity than is cast as burdensome, accidental, or incidental to God's creative genius. Content includes hermeneutical reflections on disability in the Bible, non-canonical, and other sacred texts; special guests with varying disabilities narrating their stories; commentaries of lament; and calls for action that the church becomes the head and not the tail of disability justice. About the Host: Rev. Raedorah C. Stewart is known as RevSisRaedorah in publications and QueenQueenDom on social media platforms holds a Masters of Arts in Christian Leadership from a Calvinist seminary on the West coast; MDiv equivalency courses in biblical Greek and Hebrew from the same; and completion of the Doctor of Ministry in Spirituality and Story from a Wesleyan seminary on the East coast. I have held committee positions in the American Academy of Religion including the Committee of Persons with Disabilities in the Profession, Womanist Theology and Ethics groups, Queer Studies in Religion, Theology and the Arts, and African American and Indigenous Preaching. Publications include poetry in “Deeper Shades of Purple: Womanism in Religion and Society” through the NYU Press; and in other publications by and for Black women in the church; article in the Tikkun Magazine article, “Made by God, Broken by Life: Developing an African American Hermeneutic for Disability”; article in the Sage Journal Theology Today, “Loop, Hook, Pull: Disabled by Design—Creating a Narrative Theology of Disability"; and academic paper in the International Journal of Black Theology, “Say Now Shibboleth--Queerying Words at Work in Worship.” I am ordained clergy, a seminary professor, and Director of Christian education at my home church. This podcast is launched with grace and generosity by support from the Henry Luce Foundation and Columbia University's Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice (CARSS). Welcome to Imagine with Us podcast with Rabbi Michael Lerner and Cat Zavis. In this episode, we discuss the liberatory and spiritual meanings of Chanukah and Christmas and why as spiritual activists we think drawing on these messages is important in our work to heal and transform the world. But unfortunately in this mass capitalist culture, those meanings get obscured and replaced with the mantra of buy, buy, buy. And that message is particularly painful this year in the midst of a pandemic that has crushed even the insufficient financial resources for tens of millions of people in our society. Author, essayist, and Dartmouth professor of Jewish Studies, Shaul Magid joins us to discuss the myth of a “two state solution” in the Palestine/Israel conflict. He explains the origins of the idea and its continued belief amongst “liberal Zionists” that this must be possible. He contends that without it, these people must admit that they are possibly no different than the right wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu. This week, Roqayah and Kumars are joined by Ariel Gold and Lily Tajjadini. Ariel serves as the national co-director of the anti-war group CODEPINK, and is an organizer with the Ithaca Committee for Justice in Palestine. Ariel has been published in The Huffington Post, Forward, and Tikkun Magazine, among others. Lily is also an organizer with CODEPINK where she is the Iran Campaign manager. Ariel and Lily, who were recently involved in the historic occupation of the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, D.C., describe the events that lead up to this dramatic action and what hurdles they encountered from local authorities, the Secret Service, and a barrage of protesters loyal to self-appointed president Juan Guaidó. Ariel and Lily recount the creative efforts on the part of the embassy activists, who called themselves as the Embassy Protection Collective, to get food and supplies into the embassy where as many as 50 demonstrators were inside, having been invited to stay by the legitimate government of Venezuela led by Nicolás Maduro. We hear about hostile clashes during which pro-Guaidó protestors, who had barricaded the exterior of embassy, attempted to intimidate embassy volunteers and prevent access to first aid, medicine, and food. We discuss the fate of activists who were arrested by authorities after the embassy was illegally raided after an incredible 36 days. Ariel and Lily explain that activists haven’t been charged with trespassing, an admission that the embassy was Venezuelan territory. Additionally, representatives of Guaidó’s self-described “government” still haven’t gained access to the site, further proof of the shaky footing the US government knows itself to be on. Finally, Ariel and Lily explain that, far from a symbolic act, this effort had a real impact on ratcheting down tensions and making a US military attack on Venezuela less likely. According to the Washington Post, US President Donald Trump "is questioning his administration's aggressive strategy in Venezuela following the failure of a US-backed effort to oust President Nicolás Maduro, complaining he was misled about how easy it would be to replace the socialist strongman with a young opposition figure, according to administration officials and White House advisers. The president's dissatisfaction has crystallized around National Security Adviser John Bolton and what Trump has groused is an interventionist stance at odds with his view that the United States should stay out of foreign quagmires." What's really going on?South Africans voted Wednesday in the country's sixth national election since the formation of its democratic government 25 years ago. This election was seen as a test for President Cyril Ramaphosa and his party, the African National Congress (ANC), which has led South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. Ramaphosa and the ANC were expected to prevail, and early results, which started trickling in Thursday, suggest they will do so — but likely with a reduced majority.Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes says CEO Mark Zuckerberg is "not accountable," and the government should break up the social media giant. In a New York Times op-ed Thursday, Hughes writes that Facebook has gotten out of control. In an interview with NBC News following up on his op-ed, Hughes said it's become clear that "the Facebook that exists today is not the Facebook that we founded in 2004." The FBI is investigating nearly 850 people as possible domestic terrorists. FBI Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Michael McGarrity told a House of Representatives panel on Wednesday that the number of cases involving white supremacists and others motivated by race has jumped in the past six months. McGarrity said there have been more arrests and deaths caused by domestic terrorists in the US in recent years than international ones, and that that hatred and extreme views are increasingly being spread online.GUESTS:Ariel Gold — National co-director for Code Pink. It's Friday: that means it's panel time, as we discuss the major stories of the week.Just over 24 hours after announcing his presidential bid, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has already raised $6 million from more than 225,000 donors, his campaign said Wednesday morning. That amount far surpasses what any of his rivals have disclosed raising after their own announcements this year. I know that it is still very early in the game, but is this a data point that we should take note of? Previously, Senator Kamala Harris of California had claimed the biggest early fundraising haul that had been made public, with $1.5 million in 24 hours. In comparison, Sanders' campaign said its fundraising in the first 24 hours came to $5.9 million. Sanders' early fundraising success is not unexpected: After all, he raised well over $200 million when he ran against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 election, and his list of online donors dwarfs those of his rivals.US President Donald Trump said Wednesday the United States would not re-admit an American-born woman Hoda Muthana, who traveled to Syria to join Daesh and now wants to come home. She does not qualify for citizenship and has no legal basis to return to the country, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. In 2014, Muthana, then a 20-year-old student in Alabama, traveled to Turkey, hiding her plans from her family. She told them she was heading to a university event. In fact, she was smuggled into Syria, where she met up with Daesh. She has now seen the error of her ways and wants to come back home. Pompeo said Muthana did not have “any legal basis, no valid US passport, no right to a passport nor any visa to travel to the United States.” Muthana says she applied for and received a United States passport before leaving for Turkey. And she was born in the United States — ordinarily a guarantee of citizenship. Muthana's father was a Yemeni diplomat, and children born in the United States to active diplomats are not bestowed birthright citizenship, since diplomats are under the jurisdiction of their home countries. What's at play here? The Supreme Court struck an extraordinary blow for criminal justice reform on Wednesday, placing real limitations on what many have called policing for profit across the country. Its unanimous decision for the first time prohibits all 50 states from imposing excessive fines, including the seizure of property, on people accused or convicted of a crime. The Eighth Amendment guarantees that no “excessive fines” may be “imposed,” an ancient right enshrined in the Magna Carta and enthusiastically adopted by the Framers of the US Constitution. Police in the US employ civil asset forfeiture, a process that we would call theft in any other context. Here's how it works: Prosecutors accuse an individual of a crime, then seize assets that have some tenuous connection to the alleged offense. What are real implications of this decision? Three leading Democratic presidential candidates have recently signaled their support for some form of “reparations” for black Americans, broadly, if vaguely, backing the idea of compensating the descendants of enslaved people in the United States. Sens. Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), as well as former Obama administration housing official Julián Castro, have all said in recent weeks they support reparations for African Americans. How will this translate on the election trail, and is it a realistic focus?GUESTS: Ariel Gold — National co-director for Codepink. US Attorney General Bill Barr is preparing to announce as early as next week the completion of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, with plans for Barr to submit to Congress soon after a summary of Mueller's confidential report. Under the special counsel regulations, Mueller must submit a "confidential" report to the attorney general at the conclusion of his work, but the rules don't require it to be shared with Congress, or, by extension, the public. And, as Barr has made clear, the Justice Department generally guards against publicizing "derogatory" information about uncharged individuals. What's the media to do? Americans have been whipped into a frenzy about this report, and it looks like it's going to be anti-climatic in terms of its legal scope. Politically, who knows? The Supreme Court struck an extraordinary blow for criminal justice reform on Wednesday, placing real limitations on what many have called policing for profit across the country. Its unanimous decision for the first time prohibits all 50 states from imposing excessive fines, including the seizure of property, on people accused or convicted of a crime. What are the real implications of this decision? As the deadline approaches for the withdrawal of US forces fighting the Daesh in Syria, America's closest European allies have turned down a Trump administration request to fill the gap with their own troops, according to US and foreign officials. France and Britain are the only other countries with troops on the ground in the US-led coalition battling Daesh. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said last week that he was mystified by Trump's policy. On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that “there is no prospect of British forces replacing the Americans” in Syria. What does mean for Syria going forward? On the website Grayzone Project, Anya Parampil writes, "Maria Faría, the daughter of a would-be Hugo Chávez assassin, illegally barged into Venezuela's embassy in Costa Rica and declared herself ambassador. The embarrassing stunt highlighted everything wrong with Juan Guaidó's reality-show government." We'll take a deep dive into everything wrong in Venezuela, the US attempt to overthrow President Nicolas Maduro and set the facts straight on the legitimacy of Juan Guaido. The Costs Of War Project released a report showing that "the American public has largely ignored the post-9/11 wars and their costs. But the vastness of Washington's counterterror activities suggests, now more than ever, that it's time to pay attention." What does his mean? They "set out to map all the places in the world where the United States is still fighting terrorism so many years later, since September 2001 when the Bush administration launched the 'Global War on Terror.'” What did they find? How much has this cost in blood and treasure? Their project's research shows that, "since 2001, the US war on terror has resulted in the loss — conservatively estimated — of almost half a million lives in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan alone. By the end of 2019, we also estimate that Washington's global war will cost American taxpayers no less than $5.9 trillion already spent and in commitments to caring for veterans of the war throughout their lifetimes." Senator Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent and 2016 Democratic primary runner-up, announced today that he is making a second run for president. During the campaign three years ago, he called for “Medicare for all,” a $15 minimum wage and tuition-free public colleges, positions that a number of Democrats have taken on as their own in some form or fashion. The 77-year-old says he's running not only to oppose President Donald Trump but to enact progressive ideas like universal healthcare, a $15 minimum wage and student debt reduction. Bernie is forcing folks like Senators Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris to define themselves and their policies within his context. Klobuchar has to say where she stands on free college for all and Medicare for all. Harris has to explain why she's not a socialist. He is impacting how the discussion is being framed. When it comes to explaining how these candidates will pay for their programs, Senator Elizabeth Warren has her millionaire tax. It will be interesting to see if the discussion turns to military spending, forcing some of these hawkish Democrats to really move to the left. What impact will this have going forward to 2020? President Trump spoke to a segment of the Venezuelan community in Miami on Monday, putting an overtly political gloss on his administration's backing of a coup in Venezuela, casting that country's turmoil as a cautionary tale for those who would embrace socialism. “Socialism has so completely ravaged this great country that even the world's largest reserves of oil are no longer enough to keep the lights on,” Mr. Trump said. “This will never happen to us.” The president seems to be pulling out all stops to rally support for his ill-conceived coup in Venezuela. What are we to make of this? Republicans have been warning us about voter fraud for a while. The data told us that it was not happening at any statistically significant level. Well, a case has been found, and it involves a Republican candidate. A North Carolina woman is detailing how a voter fraud operation in a controversial Congressional race worked. In the first day of testimony at a state Board of Elections hearing yesterday, Lisa Britt explained how she illegally picked up and falsified absentee ballots in the 9th Congressional District. Britt explained how she would handle unsealed and incomplete ballots. What's going on with this case? GUESTS:Garland Nixon — Co-Host of Fault Lines on Sputnik News. Dr. Miller interviews guest Dr. Michael Lerner, Rabbi, Clinical Psychologist, Political Activist, Author and Creator of Tikkun magazine. While at Berkeley, Lerner became a leader in the Berkeley student movement and the Free Speech Movement, chair of the Free Student Union, and chair from 1966-1968 of the Berkeley chapter of the Students for a Democratic Society. After teaching philosophy of law at San Francisco State University, he took a job as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Washington and taught ethics, social and political philosophy, philosophy of literature and culture, and introduction to philosophy. After serving for five years as dean of the graduate school of psychology at the New College of California (now defunct) in San Francisco, Lerner and his then-wife Nan Fink created a general-interest intellectual magazine called Tikkun: A Bimonthly Jewish Critique of Politics, Culture and Society. Tikkun was started with the intention of challenging the left for its inability to understand the centrality of religious and spiritual concerns in the lives of ordinary Americans. With his associate editor Peter Gabel, Lerner developed a "politics of meaning" to speak to the hunger for meaning that was characteristic of the thousands of people that Lerner and his colleagues were studying at the Institute for Labor and Mental Health. Tikkun was formed to educate the public about the findings of the Institute and to develop some of the implications of that work. However, because it also had an interest in being an "alternative to the voices of Jewish conservatism," Tikkun was criticized by some Jewish groups. In 1993, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton included the "politics of meaning" in her synthesis of political and social philosophy she was forming. Later in 2002, Lerner organized a group called the Tikkun Community among readers of Tikkun magazine and those who share its editorial vision.
