Reverend David Usher shares his wisdom on how to become more spiritual, and Carlotta Minderhout tells us about the opening of Uniqlo in Luxembourg. Reverend David Usher has had an unusual path in life, which makes him all the more interesting. Born in Adelaide, Australia, he grew up as a Unitarian. Dropping out of his first stint at university to study architecture, he spent four years in the outback as a 'jackaroo', working on remote sheep and cattle stations. This was followed by 18 months travelling solo through New Zealand, the Pacific islands, Mexico, USA, Canada and the UK. And through these years the calling to become a minister kept returning. Perhaps having moved from trying architecture of buildings he became an architect of lives, gently scaffolding those who came into his circle of wisdom. By some fortuitous swerve of life, he ended up studying Philosophy & Theology at the University of Oxford, and then became a Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton Theological Seminary, Boston, USA. Through his years of thought and lived experience he has written two books: 12 Steps to Spiritual Health https://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Steps-Spiritual-Health-David/dp/0853190836 Life Spirit https://www.amazon.com/Life-Spirit-Individuals-Exploring-Questions/dp/0853190852 Reverend Usher served as a minister in England and New Hampshire. He is now 'retired' living in California but actively involved in many organisations such as SURJ, Showing Up for Racial Justice. UNIQLO in Luxembourg There's been much excitement in Luxembourg this past week for those who like fashion. UNIQLO opened in Luxembourg, and its opening was marked with a fun party with Luxembourg influencers, including our own Emma. UNIQLO worked with local artists to create unique products for the Luxembourg market, such as Lynn Cosyn. Carlotta Minderhout, Head of Brand for UNIQLO Benelux came to the studio to tell us more about the concepts that Uniqlo abide by. They have a LifeWear Philosophy, and have built a RE.UNIQLO studio where people can bring their older clothes from the store to get repaired or revamped into something more modern. SURJ BIO: For as much as he's known for creating soundtracks to people's daily lives, SURJ asserts himself as a storyteller, first and foremost. His songs engage audiences everywhere by converting the magic around him into anthems we can all sing. After introducing himself with his debut album All Things True, he landed a global smash with band Space Between Us in the form of “Filter” & "Paris In Spring" SURJ is kicking off 2023 with a new chapter of music that celebrates the importance of living in the now and untangling the complexities of life. Hear his most personal story yet on his second full-length solo album, The Light Between the Oceans. The Light Between the Oceans is an anthem of hope for uncertain times. So many of us are walking around with more than we can carry on. Being our adult selves can be so different from what we thought our adult selves would be like. Realizing growing up is not what we thought it was, life is not going to look the way we think it is, and even when it does, it doesn't make us happy. Realizing the ultimate light in our lives, it is crucial to avoid just running through the motions. "This snapshot, I pray, gives you a reservoir of hope based on a foundation full of light," says SURJ.  SURJ Links: https://www.instagram.com/surjsh_/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEe_QBvfhknpr2BFtFiSHBA LinkTree: https://linktr.ee/spacebetweenus Apple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/surj/1532983812 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5zO88ESqebxRGgFBwcmeyD?si=wOqLa_jcQjyr0DrETH8AOA The Autistic Me: Blog: https://www.tameri.com/autisticme/ Podcast: https://autisticme.libsyn.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/autisticme/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/autisticme YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/CSWyatt LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/autisticme

The "Mendocino War" was a bloody conflict between the Yuki tribe and white settlers in Northern California. White settlers raided and stole Yuki lands and massacring hundreds of Yuki in the process. The Yuki fled to "The Mountain" in what is now known as the Jackson Demonstration State Forest to escape the violence. Those villages in the forest are now sacred sites to the Coastal Yuki and Northern Pomo tribes. The state of California is allowing logging companies to log the 50,000 acre Jackson Forest for profit to finance CalFire's operations fighting wildfires. Despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's direction for California state agencies to co-manage state lands with local Native American tribes and seek opportunities to return State lands to Native American tribes, the Dept. of Natural Resources has only designated 75 acres as "sacred sites." Flying solo, Scott talks with Pricilla Hunter, Polly Girvin and Andy Wellspring with the Pomo Land Back (@PomoLandBack) campaign and the Coalition to Save Jackson Forest (@savejacksoncoalition) about the ongoing campaign to save the Jackson Forest and the sacred sites within it. The campaign has seen backcountry blockades and tree-sit action as well as rallies and marches in Mendocino County and Sacramento. The campaigners see this as potentially the next great environmental struggle. We discuss. Bios// Priscilla Hunter is a Tribal Elder of the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians, former Chairwoman of the Tribe, and currently the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. Priscilla is working to protect the Sacred Sites of her Northern Pomo and Coast Yuki peoples that are threatened by logging, road building and pesticide operations in the Jackson Demonstration State Forest, which is located in her homelands, also called Mendocino. Polly Girvin is a movement elder, Chicana activist, and civil rights and Federal Indian Law attorney graduated from the University of California Berkeley and Columbia University School of Law. Andy Wellspring is a member of Showing Up for Racial Justice, the Mendo Coast chapter. SURJ is white folks committed to racial justice nationally, and SURJ Mendo Coast is a member of the Coalition to Save Jackson State Forest and supporting the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians in this struggle to protect sacred sites and end commercial logging on Pomo Homelands. ----------------------------- Outro- Stuart James "NoDAPL" Links// Save Jackson Forest: https://savejackson.org/ Donate to support the tribe's legal strategy.   Nicole Asherah - A Life Cycle: A Guide to Healing and Rediscovering Yourself. This is episode 494 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Nicole Asherah is an artist whose main mediums are poetry, film photography, and oil painting but she has a habit of dabbling in whatever sparks her creative juices. Switching between mediums of expression, Nicole tries to connect readers to intimate moments, feelings, and relationships experienced throughout life. She wants to break your heart with the raw emotion that her pieces evoke. She hopes you find joy in that heartbreak as she always does! Nicole has unique background of being raised by a psychologist, backpacking around more than 15 countries by herself, attending Roehampton University's Creative Writing Poetry MFA, volunteering with SURJ and other grassroots organizations that have all synthesized to give her broad understanding of peoples individual struggles and how to capture them in art. Nicole loves to hear feedback and reactions so please feel free to comment or contact her. Today we will focus on her book -  A Life Cycle: A Guide to Healing and Rediscovering Yourself. A Life Cycle, Nicole Asherah's debut book, follows the introspective process of transformation after emotional hardship through poetic language. Asherah serves as a guide through the sections of her book while also allowing the readers to see the words as their own. A Life Cycle is broken into sections after a traumatic event that represents the final tipping point. What follows is The Shattering: a deep dive into the suffering of fully losing one's sense of self and safety, The Healing: a journey through processing layers of trauma to reach the root hurts of childhood, Light Shines Through: an exploration of reigniting hope and learning to find joy, and The Loving: a discovery of what love is and how the act of loving has much more to do with one's self than the person receiving the love. This book transcends the genre of poetry because of its ability to universally help people process and name feelings that often elude words. This book is for anyone developing, hurting, healing, or becoming new versions of themselves. She knows this because that is exactly what she was doing when she wrote it: healing childhood trauma, processing a sexual assault, and learning how to experience joy. Great conversation! Whenever women have raised their voices and demanded equity in our society, or whenever oppressive gender relations have been threatened, a vicious backlash or counterattack inevitably follows. Sometimes under the cover of religion, other times justified by appealing to culture, tradition, or science, male supremacy and misogyny are central and alarmingly consistent features defining the politics of the global far right. What is it about the worldview and overarching political project of the far right that makes the thought of gender equality and an end to traditional gender roles and hierarchies such a threatening prospect? And how has the crusade against “gender ideology” galvanized far-right politics around the globe? In this special series of The Marc Steiner Show, co-hosted by Marc Steiner and Bill Fletcher Jr., we will examine the rise of the right in the US and beyond, we will explore the different tendencies and motivations fueling today's surge in far-right politics, and we will engage with a range of critical voices who can help us understand how we got here and what we can do about it. In Episode Three of “Rise of the Right,” Marc and Bill are joined by Judith Butler and Alex DiBranco to discuss how, beyond the surface-level individual displays of misogyny among individual members of the far right, gender politics are a definitive feature of far-right ideologies and social movements.Judith Butler is a world-renowned philosopher and gender theorist whose books have been translated into over 27 languages. E3: Applying Jesus to New Vision - Interview with Rev. Anne Dunlap, SURJ - Part 2 This conversation was so rich and deep, we had to break it up into two parts. In our conversation with Rev. Anne Dunlap of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SUJR), we talk about her journey and faith, get a little nerdy with our sacred texts and about what justice looks like to reform law enforcement in America. Season 2 is intentionally different than Season 1. In this season, we are talking with folks hard at work re-imagining what it means to respond and reform the issues within our society. These conversations are going to help us, in the Church, re-imagine what it means to be a part of the solution - the Kin-Dom Come. Big Takeaways: About Rev. Anne Nurtured into faith-rooted organizing in the Central America solidarity movement in the 1980s, Anne is particularly grateful to the Central American, Black, immigrant, worker, and indigenous leaders who have challenged and taught her to think and act more deeply about what it means to be human, and what it means to be free. Anne is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and also the founder of FierceRev Remedies, offering herbal consults, workshops, mentorship as well as consulting, teaching, and preaching, all towards the goal of racial justice and collective liberation that's rooted in healing practice with the land. She's currently co-editing a book on congregational organizing, and led the creation of the SURJ-Faith Community Safety for All: #DefundPolice Congregational Action Toolkit. She is proud to be from Arkansas, and has lived in a lot of different places which have taught her about the importance of the relationship of place and culture. Now happy to call Buffalo, NY home, Anne loves life with her beloved and their kitty; herbcrafting; long nature rambles; snuggling baby goats; loving on her people; music, books, and poetry; and building community. In today's episode of Next Economy Now, your host, Ryan Honeyman, gets together with Erin Heaney, executive director of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). https://surj.org/Erin shares about her family history of involvement in activism, from the struggles in Northern Ireland to Union groups in America, and how her queer identity has connected her to her work in social justice reform. Erin explains that while SURJ was founded relatively recently in 2009, its mandate strives to respond to a call from The Black Panthers, made in the 1960s, on white folks to address racism in their communities. The conversation centers on the important work being done at SURJ and the role that white folks can play in social justice reform by supporting solutions that have been set by those most affected by white supremacy. Erin unpacks the importance of discussing race and class concurrently in activism and reform work, and how racism and white supremacy have undermined every single social justice movement in the USA by weaponizing racial divides. ---LIFT Economy NewsletterJoin 7000+ subscribers and get our free 60 point business design checklist—plus monthly tips, advice, and resources to help you build the Next Economy: https://lifteconomy.com/newsletter---Next Economy MBAThis episode is brought to you by the Next Economy MBA.What would a business education look like if it was completely redesigned for the benefit of all life? Get ready to have your current beliefs about race and racism challenged. In part one of this two part conversation, Linda's guest is Kathy Castania.  In this episode, Kathy shares how some policies meant to help people of color,  like affirmative action,  actually caused more harm than good. She also explains why white people have a hard time understanding the extent of racism and why it is a white problem. Linda also recounts the moment when her eyes were opened to the depth of racism in our country. This is not a feel good conversation and I hope you have the courage to listen. I invite you to open your heart and your mind to what's being said and be willing to doubt your current beliefs about racism. Kathy Castania is a diversity consultant who retired from Cornell University after 23 years as a Senior Extension Associate with the Cornell Migrant Program. Kathy has facilitated racism and diversity workshops at both the National and State levels and served as the Multicultural Education Coordinator for the NYS Migrant Education Program for 12 years. In this episode, I take it back to December 2016 from an older podcast I hosted (the MANA Show). I interviewed good friend Sara Floor who just returned from her trip to Havana, Cuba during Fidel Castro's untimely passing. Sara had spoken with Cuban natives to get their personal reactions, and went live on Facebook to share what was really going on. In 2016 live streaming was a new feature on Facebook, and a vital way to see the unedited truth. We also give our opinions on the recent election results, and how other countries reacted to Donald Trump becoming our next U.S. President. If only we knew just how chaotic and deadly Trump's term would end up. #CaughtitinCuba Sara has been an activist/ally since the 1980's for the LGBTQ Community, the Fight for AIDS epidemic, and more currently SURJ, Black Lives Matter, ACLU, #NoDAPL / Standing Rock, ND.
