In this episode, Nadia and Alyssa compare living conditions in San Francisco versus Boston, focusing on urban challenges that residents face. The conversation begins with discussing San Francisco's reputation and how news coverage often portrays it negatively, emphasizing homelessness and cleanliness issues. The discussion then shifts to a specific city problem that Nadia is experiencing in Boston - a mouse infestation in her apartment. She details her experiences with seeing and catching mice, her landlord's inadequate response, and how the situation has affected her daily life. Nadia and Alyssa also touched on tenant rights and landlord responsibilities, concluding with a plan to potentially bring in an expert to discuss both the health implications of living with mice and tenant rights.TakeawaysMedia portrayal of cities like San Francisco often focuses disproportionately on problems like homelessness and drug use, which can create an exaggerated negative perception.Urban living comes with specific challenges like pest control problems, which can be especially difficult for young renters to address.Landlord responsiveness varies greatly, and many young renters may not be aware of their tenant rights when facing habitability issues.Health concerns related to mice infestations (like exposure to droppings or potential diseases) add another layer of stress to rental problems.Having a supportive third party (like a realtor) can help when communicating with difficult landlords, though ultimately it's the landlord's responsibility to maintain safe living conditions.Chapters0:10-1:57 - Introduction and San Francisco's Media Reputation1:58-2:56 - Comparing Boston and San Francisco Living Conditions2:57-5:42 - Mice Problem in Boston Apartments5:43-8:12 - Dealing with Mice and Health Concerns8:13-11:51 - Failed Attempts to Solve the Infestation11:52-13:21 - Other Urban Living Challenges13:22-15:56 - Landlord Responsibilities and Tenant Rights
In Enough is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Eezier to Spell (Dey Street Books, 2025), Gabe Henry presents a brief and humorous 500-year history of the Simplified Spelling Movement from advocates like Ben Franklin, C. S. Lewis, and Mark Twain to texts and Twitter. Why does the G in George sound different from the G in gorge? Why does C begin both case and cease? And why is it funny when a philologist faints, but not polight to laf about it? Anyone who has ever had the misfortune to write in English has, at one time or another, struggled with its spelling. So why do we continue to use it? If our system of writing words is so tragically inconsistent, why haven't we standardized it, phoneticized it, brought it into line? How many brave linguists have ever had the courage to state, in a declaration of phonetic revolt: "Enough is enuf"? The answer: many. In the comic annals of linguistic history, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to bring English into the realm of the rational. This book is about them: Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. S. Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and the innumerable others on both sides of the Atlantic who, for a time in their life, became fanatically occupied with writing thru instead of through, tho for though, laf for laugh, beleev for believe, and dawter for daughter (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too). Henry takes his humorous and informative chronicle right up to today as the language seems to naturally be simplifying to fit the needs of our changing world thanks to technology--from texting to Twitter and emojis, the Simplified Spelling Movement may finally be having its day. No language is as inconsistent in spelling and pronunciation as English. Kernel and colonel rhyme, but read changes based on past or present tense. Ough has many pronunciations: ‘aw’ (thought), ‘ow’ (drought), ‘uff’ (tough), ‘off’ (cough), ‘oo’ (through). In response to this orthographic minefield, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to bring English into the realm of the rational: Mark Twain, Ben Franklin, Eliza Burnz, C. S. Lewis, George Bernard Shaw, Charles Darwin, and the innumerable others on both sides of the Atlantic who, for a time in their life, became fanatically occupied with writing thru instead of through, tho for though, laf for laugh (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too). This began with the “simplified spelling movement” starting with medieval England and continuing to Revolutionary America, from the birth of standup comedy to contemporary pop music, and lasting influence can still be seen in words like color (without a U), plow (without -ugh), and the iconic ’90s ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U.” To explore this history is today’s guest, Gabe Henry, author of “Enough is Enuf, Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell.” We look at the past and present of the digital age, where the swift pace of online exchanges (from emojis to social media) now pushes us all 2ward simplification. Simplified spelling may, at last, be having its day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. Douglas Beaumont, a former Evangelical seminarian professor and a convert to the Catholic faith, to unpack how trying to decipher the "Evangelical essentials" led to his conversion. Dr. Beaumont, a student of the late Evangelical theologian Dr. Norman Geisler, studied deeply into the history of the Church, the Bible, and tried to identify the "essentials" that all Evangelical Christians held in common. Using the Bible as the sole infallible rule for faith, could Protestants come to a conclusion on what were the most important parts of the Gospel? Could Protestants agree on how we're saved? What baptism was for? When to baptize? What happened at the Lord's supper? And many more theological points. It was on this journey, studying under one of the greatest minds in Evangelical Christianity, that Dr. Beaumont came to realize that finding the "Protestant Essentials," what united all Protestants together, was an impossible task.To find more from Dr. Beaumount visit his website and check out his fantastic YouTube channel as well.Dr. Beaumont also has a great video on the Evangelical Essentials as well as two articles:Can the Grammatical-Historical Method of Interpretation Determine Christian Orthodoxy? Is Christian Orthodoxy a Logical Deduction? Over the years, Josh tried and failed to sell his company three times only to have each deal thwarted for a different reason. By 2023 GreenPath was generating more than $8 million in revenue when they finally agreed to be acquired by a competitor for around 7 times EBITDA, 90% of which was paid in cash with the balance paid in stock of the acquirer.

How to acknowledge and accept failed ATTEMPTS and still move forward towards eventual successes.Let's look at the concept of failure and how people perceive it.Many people equate their self-worth with their performance, leading to the belief that failure equated to being a failure. This idea is shifting towards many people avoiding admitting to failure as they believe that every failure is an opportunity for learning.Failure does not guarantee learning, but every time someone fails, there is an opportunity to learn.Failure should be seen as an event and not as a person. Failure in a task does not equate to being a failure.Embracing the idea that our worth as humans is not determined by what we do allows us to acknowledge our failures while understanding that they do not define us.Instead, we can choose to pursue something different or decide that it is not our area of strength and move on.Key takeaways:Our worth as humans is not determined by what we do.Failure is an event, not a person.Failure does not guarantee learning, but every failure is an opportunity to learn.Acknowledging our failures allows us to pursue something different or decide that it is not our area of strength and move on.3-DAY WEEKEND ENTREPRENEUR BOOK OF WISDOMGet the full eBook here for free.GAME PLANGet the Game Plan Course or Schedule a Game Plan call.3-DAY WEEKENDS IN 3 MONTHS ENTREPRENUER COACHING PROGRAMCreate a 3-Day Weekend Lifestyle in 90 DaysDesigned Specifically for 6 & 7-Figure Entrepreneurs Looking to Make More Money in 20% Less TimeLearn More about 3-Day Weekends in 3 Months3-DAY WEEKEND CLUB LINKSEmail Updates, Free Online Courses, Subscribe to the Podcast, Social Media & MoreGo to the Links Page
In this gripping podcast episode, we meet Tiffany, a 33-year-old hospital patient with a harrowing journey of addiction and resilience. Tiffany shares her story, beginning with her troubled childhood, marked by strict parenting and sexual abuse. Seeking solace outside her home, she turned to drugs and joined a gang at the age of 16. As Tiffany's drug use escalated, she experimented with various substances, including cocaine and opioids. Unaware of the risks and dangers, she became dependent on prescription medication, leading her down a destructive path. Eventually, she turned to heroin, engaging in prostitution and engaging in risky behaviors to sustain her addiction. Tiffany's life took a tragic turn when she witnessed her friend being murdered while trying to protect her. Despite this traumatic event, Tiffany couldn't break free from her addiction. Her desperation led her into a dangerous encounter where she narrowly escaped being killed herself. After countless encounters with law enforcement, hospital visits, and failed attempts at getting clean, Tiffany finally reached a turning point. On June 12th, 2022, she found herself in the hospital with a heart infection caused by drug use. This incident, coupled with her immense suffering, motivated her to seek a way out. Although Tiffany's journey is filled with darkness and despair, her story ultimately carries a message of hope and transformation. Join us as we explore Tiffany's path to recovery, her battles with mental health issues, and her quest for redemption amidst the grips of addiction. Through her raw and honest account, Tiffany sheds light on the complex nature of addiction, the depths of despair it can lead to, and the resilience and strength required to reclaim one's life. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and support in helping individuals break free from the cycle of addiction.
The experience of failure sucks - often resulting in depression, self-loathing and identity crisis. But if you follow the rules of failure—seeing beyond the mess and picking through the good stuff left in life's shit heap of life's catastrophes — you can bounce forward from failure into success. Embrace the F-word and let hard times make you stronger. Because after it sucks, FAILURE RULES! SOME OF THE VITAL TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ONE…What made you choose the five failures that you included in this book? How did your role as record producer for punk rock enter into your journey from failure to success? How difficult was it for you to come to the decision to pursue a job you love rather than one that made sense financially? What is your biggest piece of advice for people whose fear is holding them back from taking the leap towards their passion? How important is it for entrepreneurs to have back up plans whenever they embark on their pursuits? How long did it take you to shift your mindset and view failures in the way you do now? What role does humor play during the low moments of experiencing failure? What does being authentic, even in the face of failure, mean to you? Can you think of a time where you really leaned into your failure instead of letting the negativity of it consume you?About Dr. John's Guest:Andrew Thorp King is an executive fintech banker, spy novelist, speaker, punk rocker, podcaster, ex-bodybuilder, cigar lover, and serial entrepreneur. He founded two independent record labels—Thorp Records and Sailor's Grave Records—and has invested in many spaces, including online lending, fitness, lead generation, and independent music. He is the author of Failure Rules! The 5 Rules of Failure for Entrepreneurs, Creatives and Authentics. Andrew Thorp King is also a serial failure. He has crashed and burned through bankruptcy, divorce, mortgage default, public assistance, and multiple business failures. But, like a jack-in-the-box after a punch, he pops back up every time, rebuilding his life—informed by failure—with a big smile on his face. Failure can ruin lives and families. There's no denying it. It can destroy your health and obliterate your self-esteem. But it also holds a lot of value on the road to success. FAILURE RULES! walks you through five essential rules to help you pull value from any failure—as proven by Andrew Thorp King's personal stories of dramatic, cascading failures in business, relationships, art, and life. Journey through key failure lessons from a wildly diverse set of successful entrepreneurs, creatives, and authentics, including Winston Churchill, Sara Blakely, Henry Rollins, Andrew Yang, Toby Keith, Ryan Holiday, David Goggins, Glenn Beck, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Billie Jean King, Srinivas Rao, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, J.K.
